  • This story dives deep into the history of the founding company, Peterman Manufacturing, and explains the deep ties to Western Washington. I hope you enjoy it. This is in no way a complete history of the company once it left Washington state. As for comments relating to the inaccuracies of this video, there is conflicting information and I pieced together the facts that agreed the most with each other. This is the SELDOM told story, the very beginning, the part that pertains to Washington state.

    Another viewer sent me this - Peterbilt moved from Oakland, California to Newark in 1960. In 1970 they opened the Madison/Nashville, Tennessee factory to serve the eastern US and Great Lakes. In 1980 they opened plant in Denton,Texas. Division headquarters and engineering remained in Newark. Production at Newark ended in the fall of 1986. Division and engineering made the move to Denton in 1993. Nashville continued building until 2008 and closed in 2009. You made mention of the cabover engine truck the model 362 being their first cabover, the 362 was the 4th generation of cabover with the model 350 in 1949, followed by the 351, then 352 in 1958 with the 362 production starting in 1981.

      I used to haul out a National Seating truck seats in Vonore Tennessee to Peterbilt Denton TX and Peterbilt Madison.. I've done that for about 10 years really enjoyed it

    A couple of notes: Peterbilt didn't "move to Denton Texas in 1980." The Denton plant was added in 1980, complimenting the Nashville and Newark plants - Nashville serving the eastern and great lakes regions and Denton initially for cabover production with Newark focusing on conventionals. Production, engineering and administration remained in Newark, California until 1986 when production in California ended, but division and engineer stayed in Newark until 1993 when they moved to Denton. The cabover 362 in 1980 was the 4th generation of Peterbilt cabover, not the first. The first was the model 350 in 1949, followed by the 351, then 352.

      Thanks for clearing that up. There is a lot of info out there, I tried to get to the core facts, but really focusing on the beginning, since my channel is about Western Washington. I have to say I have a lot more respect for the brand now that I made this doc. I grew up listening to country and my dad drove concrete mixers, greyhound chartered bus and a cab over flatbed when I was growing up, my dad was a heavy equipment mech at a submarine base when he passed away, so I have a close tie to trucks. I have a project truck, 1970 GMC 4500, it can be seen on my other channel, Puget Sound Life. Thank you for watching and your input on dates when they moved.

    Totally fascinating - thank you! As a Brit I'm an ignoramous on things like this, however I've seen so many of these trucks in the States - and always pondered on the history. Now I am better informed.

      Mercedes, Volvo, Iveco, MAN, Scania, Daf. Those are the main ones - I'd guess 99% of the western EU market for tractor units (just a guess from clocking trucks on the European motorways). Pretty much all cab-over. The American trucks are just so different - therefore really interesting. Looked at Mack today also, and Kenworth - lovely pieces of gear. I'm not a trucker - just inquisitive about any kind of machine and the history behind it. @@westernwashingtonhistory1889

    My Late Dad Robert had 1953 Peterbilt and 1965 Peterbilt they were made in Newark California really good trucks

    No mention of the Nashville plant, or to the 359 model. I actually dont blame you for not mentioning the union ass plant in Nashville, but the 359.....best ever! Shocked it wasn't mentioned.

      I appreciate your comment. I run a Western Washington State history channel. Everything I do focuses on that, anything else I talked about was just me trying to find a place to end the video. It is the seldom told story because it is mostly just the family history and the beginning of the company as it pertained to Washington. I will be making a PACCAR video one of these days, as they are still headquartered in Washington.

    I grew up listening to Peterbilt trucks since my dad worked at the sawmill in Tygh Valley Oregon. Old truckers never die they just get a new Peterbilt.

      Well I am sure it comes down to personal feelings, I may like a pick up more then the best selling one, who knows. In this video I was going off Peterbilt sales. It sold the most. Peterbilt says, "The model 379, an unmistakable vehicle, that defines on highway trucks for more then a generation, the 379 goes on to become the most popular owner operator truck of all time". I am not an expert on trucks, I did this more for the Washington state connection, I do not profess to know everything, I just try to lay facts out. I hope you found something at least entertaining with the video and it wasnt just a waste of your time.

    Peterman would be disappointed in today's Peterbilt trucks. I'm saying the AeroDynamic fiberglass garbage they produce. Peterbilt needs to discontinue most of their models and need to switch back to the classics like the 281, 350, 351, 359's, and 362's. All I am saying he would be very disappointed if he could see what happened to the Peterbilt industry.

This is a Western Washington history channel, I don't expect all truckers to like the videos, they are not made for them, but I am happy for the many truckers who have loved this and the Kenworth video.
