This is a really great tool idea. Now you need to come up with another one that would totally remove the rest of whatever Roger did on the album, & then it might be worth listening to, but probably not. There is only one DS.
@@TryptychUK "Agreed, but never quite as good." True, neither Floyd nor Waters were as good without each other as they were together. The band was greater than the sum of its parts. On the whole, Floyd's music without Waters was better than Waters' music was without Floyd, and certainly Waters solo stuff was not nearly as commercially successful.
You cannot say they chose to continue Floyd just to continue Floyd. The other two aside from Gilmour were choosing the option which included a lucrative future for themselves. Without backing Gilmour they had less success and fortune ahead as soloists. Gilmour already had a successful solo career. Nick Mason is doing the very early PF material on tour. Not many PF fans care for that early material. When RIchard Wright left (was fired by Waters) he did not do anything. He was depressed. He was not inspired to take up a solo career. His new girlfriend was the one who put him back together with Gilmour which eventually led to him regaining a position as a full member of PF. Initially he was brought on as a tour musician for the first post-Waters Floyd tour, not a band member.
@@SM-bm6jo l've seen and have loved all of their music through time. I also seen Roger Waters and David Gilmore solo shows. I've always been amazed. The Animals tour l think it was 77 in Cleveland is the best show my eyes have seen. I love all the versions. It was always so different from the Syd days until now. What it came down to in Floyd terms Roger thought he was Pink and he isn't. He was only 1/4 Pink.
@@TryptychUK the music changed through the years. It happens to all bands that has been around a while. They started in the late 60's. I'm a late 60's model and times have definitely changed. Personally I liked the change. Division Bell was awesome in its own way. Don't get me wrong l will always be pissed at Waters and Gilmore that they couldn't get their egos in check and make music.
Dave seems like a thoughtful, gentle and humble old bloke with a good heart that has resolved many of life's demons somehow growing gracefully old. Roger is still fighting.
Or David doesn't give a damn about the stuff Roger cares about. David is happy to go through life with his head up his harris, oblivious to the great suffering and corruption of humanity going on around us in this world. Roger cares about the world and the people. Roger is similar in some ways to Syd (Roger) Barrett, without feeling the need for walking away from it all as Syd did.
In my opinion Syd (Roger) and Roger were the soul or original brains behind Pink Floyd. Roger was the most devastated by Syd's loss and paid respect to him in many of the songs he wrote after Syd left the band.
@@markco61 Yep Roger is still gutted what happened to this day. I also think Syd gave Roger great inspiration; kind of showed him what is relatively easily possible. Maybe a bit like how the beatles experimentation inspired so many - directly, or indirectly. It seems that Syd pretty much completely walked away from it all, unlike Peter Green who continued to bubble away musically in the background and from what I've seen amassed quite a huge guitar collection. If things had gone differently, I wonder what sort of cool stuff Peter Green and Syd Barrett could have come up with had they gotten together to create some music.
@bigbasil1908 or Roger is a pretentious prat that thinks that he's still relevant. Floyd would've completely fizzled out without David's contributions.
When he quit the band he expected everyone else to stop as well regardless of their own feelings on the subject, and when they chose to carry on without him, he tried to take them to court to force them to quit. He lost, discovered that Pink Floyd was more than just Roger Waters, and he has never recovered from that. Its a shame, because he is very talented, its just that his bitterness at not being the most important person in the band overpowers his talent and it is clearly eating him alive.
He didn't want Pink Floyd to devolve into an inferior copy of themselves like most bands do, so he tried to retire the name Pink Floyd before that happened. Unfortunately, it ended up happening anyway.
@@wr7662 Unfortunately for you.Lucky us we still enjoyed amazing music and one of the greatest shows tour's ever but i don't expect this to be understood by you if you are one of Roger's ladies.
@@afojgel Roger and David both made music that was inferior to what they had done in their creative prime. It's better if it's not done under the name Pink Floyd.
@@wr7662 Amused to Death is brilliant. Its likely the greatest concept album ever done. Its just not commercial. Floyd has NEVER been commercial, thats whats so amazing about them. Word is Ezrin DEMANDED Gilmour do Learning to Fly on Momentary Lapse, that gave them a hit single that propelled the album. Roger had no such producer, Radio KAOS was a great album as well, but there wasn't anything radio friendly, it was literally an album TRASHING radio, so who is going to play it? Roger Waters on his own is about as pop friendly as Roy Harper. Thats probably why the two never got along. Dave is a musician, musicians have a hard time wiht 'songs'. Songs are hard, having something to say is hard, its why his solo albums are him mostly singing about being pissed at Roger.
About Face was not NOT Gilmour's first solo. His first solo was the self titled, "David Gilmour". Also, it wasn't Roger who cried, it was his Wife who cried after hearing the finished album for the first time. Oi.
For the most part, I quite like this guy's videos, but the more I watch the more obvious, glaring inaccuracies I hear him confidently proclaim. It's getting to the point now where I'm tempted to block his channel completely. David Hartley, if you read this and actually care about your content, please check your facts before recording them. It makes it so difficult to believe what you say when you make such errors. How can anyone who claims to have knowledge about the history of Pink Floyd be unaware of Gilmour's 1978 album?
@@thepawsofdeception6564 I think a large part of the problem with UA-cam is, youth. Youngsters speak, (with false confidence) of things they know only second-hand, or even tertiary. Those of us, who grew up and experienced the things they misrepresent can clearly see their shortcomings.
Roger can reinterpret all he likes. More power to him if it makes him happy. To me its proof that , as in the case of most bands that have split up-the whole is greater than the sum of the parts
Why should we care- you dont have to listen to it, and you can still listen to the original. What if someone else remade it? Does the name on it matter? Listen or dont and others will do the same. Its man made music, there is nothing sacred about it @@Mozart1220
Roger consistently says he doesn’t care about Pink Floyd, but go to a concert and you’ll find that he cares greatly. Roger says he doesn’t care about money, but pay attention to what he does and how he does it, and you’ll find that he cares greatly about money. Sadly, Roger’s best work was collaborative, and as his ability to collaborate diminished and his need to control grew. The greatest epiphany Roger could have is that he needed, and still needs David.
So true. For it was David who taught Roger guitar and bass giving him and Syd lessons before joining the band after Syd's death. And Gilmour easily goes down in the top 5 greatest guitarists of all time. A Guitar World magazine poll of famous guitarists gave Gilmour the #1 guitarist of all time, even ahead of Hendrix. And that was from his peers. There's alot of people that can mimick Hendrix, and do. I haven't heard anyone replicate Gilmour's playing and guitar tone. Because they can't. It's all in his hands. He has a very basic equipment setup baffling everybody. Best hands in the business I say. Good comment.
Dude Roger got screwed over many times. The fact he still wants to do concerts to pay homage to prior works doesn't mean he is somehow obsessed with money, when I went to see him perform the wall it didn't even cost that much either - he cares a LOT about his music, he doesn't care about the band yes but what music they created he cares a lot about.
What Waters produced with his remade Dark Side of the Moon was something people will listen to once or twice then loose in their music collection, never to be listened too again. I heard Waters is now working on an acapella version of The Wall. The man is mad!
Personally, I refuse to even give it a listen. I’m not saying David doesn’t share in the blame for what has become of the reputation of “Pink Floyd”, but Roger’s words and actions are atrocious. Remaking this classic album was simply an act of pettiness. A sad attempt to prove that he was the only member of the band who mattered. Pathetic!
I’ve heard many artists reimagine DSOTM from, metal to reggae to country to pop and they all were way more interesting reimaginings than the one Waters himself made.
You misrepresented the situation with Roger leaving the band. He tried firing Nick and David after having managed to fire Richard, who was brought back as a session musician, claiming that he owned the band and the name. Shortly after, he quit. Nick and David, knowing that Roger couldn't fire them, took control of the band and the name. Roger sued and lost. Eventually, Richard would be made a member of the band again, and Roger was sidelined, unable to make any decisions for the band without the other 3 approving it, which they've never done, because of how petty he had been to them over the years. Roger is an egomaniac and narcissist, and you can believe he's a tragic hero all you want, but don't hide the history to suit your narrative.
No. Richard didn’t contribute to the band at all at that point , and was indeed replaceable. David isn’t replaceable at all, and Nicks contribution is so so. When they split they never made solid agreements, and nick and Richard took David in the scheme of reanimate and make the name Pink Floyd a cashcow. The bombastic stadiumrock is the best in their league, but never ever get to the heights of the original PF. Your version is the version of the cowards who didn’t dare to make a new band which led to highjack the band former name. And all of them played the victimrole perfectly which some fans liked to follow…… like you did
What is it that you value in a band? Do you want your artists to be nice people, completely rational, always doing the right thing? I want my artists to devote themselves to art, to antagonize, to provoke thinking, to take risks and come up with bold ideas. In 1984 that was one person: Roger. That he got eased out and the other three carried on was a decision made by lawyers, not artists. A Momentary Lapse of Reason and everything that followed was utter bollocks. The Final Cut is PF's last album in my mind, and that will never change, no matter how much people like you call names and misunderstand what makes great art.
anytime a Band forms it should be held as a democracy.-NOBODY should have Any control over the music that was established as a collective group.if one feels compelled to do so they should poor man copyright their ideas then you have something to rely on if the bottom falls out of the collective group.
@@mydixiewrecked315Where are you getting these rules of rock and roll? It's almost never a democracy. Someone drives the ship while others lend their talents.
Admittedly, I don’t know the whole story, but as an outsider, it seems to me that Roger wanted everything his way, and even after he left, and could do things his own way he was still unhappy, because the rest of the group had moved on and found success, it all sounds like sour grapes to me, only my opinion
I have been obsessed with the band for years and that's basically been my take on it. He seems like a miserable ass. But he made some amazing songs in his day.
Nah. I saw Roger on his last tour. He is not bitter or controlling. Right? He just photo-shopped Gilmour's pics out of the stuff he put up on the monitors. Last time I'll see Waters live. Incredibly juvenile for a grown man.
You pretty much hit the nail on the head! I was fine with him wanting to go solo and doing his own thing, but the fact he just wanted to shut down the other guys and totally dissolve Pink Floyd because he left was ridiculous to me! It was simply spiteful, which is Roger’s core!
The other members 'found success"? Really? You mean by going on a Pink Floyd tour without Roger, singing Rogers words and making millions. What you meant is "how the others used the Pink Floyd brand went on tour and capitalized off Roger's Lyrics."
I love the agitation you can feel in the songs that go back and forth between Waters and Gilmour because they are somewhat at opposite ends of a creative spectrum; both genius but very particular about how they feel the song should go but in the end it’s just beautiful and leaves you transformed seeing themes that are way bigger than most musicians ever try to tackle. I always thought as a collaboration type band that Pink Floyd is the best at what they did for music and songs that are eternal and endearing to anyone of any age, anywhere in the world.

What a brilliant video essay! Clear, well researched, thoughtful and completely unbiased. So nice to have both sides of the Pink Floyd carnage so calmly and maturely stated. What a joy and such a refreshing thing to witness - a well thought out, brilliantly delivered video that offers so much to think about without relying on the usual UA-cam, over-emotional, slagging match. Awesome work - thank you so much for creating!
Roger already had the precursor inspiration for at least 2-3 tracks on DSOTM, on the "Music From The Body" LP he did with Ron Geesin, nearly 55 years ago. Why he felt compelled to remake an essentially inimitable LP is anybody's guess. Perhaps he really wants younger generations to salute his watershed lyrics that admittedly did carry the LP to an undeniable degree. But to anyone 45 or older, Roger's recent actions come off a lot more like a petulant Taylor Swift, than an inveterate Frost, Keats or Milton.
great pf knowledge and balanced viewpoint. 90% of the commenters here are anti-waters nutter bots who use their hatred of his political colour,,to smugly validate their incomplete beliefs about him. personally~ i wont be buying rogers dark side redux or listening to it at least on purpose, as i dont believe he has the musical chops anymore to pull off such an ambitious project. roger always prided himself as being the most 'non-musical' member of pf. im not going to hedge my bets that all of sudden hes magically become the 'most' musical member. which he would have to be by default to even attempt such a herculean aural task.
@mattwuxx Roger lives in a tortured house that he built. I've always enjoyed David Gilmour's solo work more then Waters's. If for no other reason because he understood the _ethos_ of the Pink Floyd sound and sought to maintain its integrity whenever possible. Even at the height of Water's lyrical prowess writing The Wall in 1978, Gilmour already proved he had the Floyd sound licked by writing/producing songs like "No Way Out Of Here". Which again, has way more Floyd energy, than anything Roger ever did solo then or since. Waters has basically spent the last 45+ years trying to prove that his lyrics and "vision" for Floyd, was far more important than anything Gilmour, Wright or Mason ever contributed musically. Roger was proven wrong and Dave and the rest of the guys have the receipts in the millions of satisfied concertgoers and tens of millions in album sales, that Floyd has enjoyed without Waters being anywhere in sight or the band that _he_ left over 40 years ago. I was a sophmore in high school when I was walking down the street with my Walkman on, when I heard a local radio commercial for the "Delicate Sound Of Thunder" tour. All I had to hear were those first two super silky slid blues power chords from "Learning To Fly", and I knew that Pink Floyd was _not_ Roger's band anymore and may have never been. No matter how much Waters whines or tries to claim otherwise.
@@MissMetalMelissa Totally agree. You only have to listen to Division Bell to hear Pink Floyd moved on but kept, not just Musicality of the Band but also the Lyrics! Even Momentary Lapse of Reason shows Pink Floyd as they were ( although the Production of it let it down). With Roger we haven't seen anything which resembles DOTM or Wish You were here! He's completely lost touch of what Pink Floyd were about!
The fact he made the lyrics the most prominent aspect of the cover proves it is all about him, and not the music. To say that his lyrics were more important than the band - which they weren’t. It’s why he treated Wright terribly. All part of his ego-centric bullying. When you listen to the other members talking about Floyd, they don’t try to belittle his contributions in the way he does about them. Until he catches himself and makes minor ‘cap doffing’ comments. He really should have moved on years ago, but his solo material, as generally most of the bands solo material, was never going to stand the test of time of the overall contributions to the Floyd albums.
I really appreciate your videos. They've guided me into the discovery of great music I probably never would have heard without them. This video made me check out this new album. What an absolute total vaste of time. Sounds like a kind of whispering audiobook version of an album that never needed a re-recording in the first place!
DSOTM and The Wall are indelible master works that both emerged from the 70's decade. Pink Floyds collaborative musical achievement in both efforts left a deep and lasting impression among millions. Floyds sound and lyric often merged into a resonating sonic synergy with emotional and physical revelation that reminded us we are alive.
Sure, that said, when it was Pink Floyd DSOTM was a work of perfect genius. Mad Roger goes back to try to make it more relevant. Tough to do with a one of the most iconic LP's of all time. Naturally, he fails. It ends up sounding like so much of his solo material. Just off the mark. I'm not much a fan of The Wall (I get folks who are!!) but Wish You Were Here, Animals, Meddle and parts of other early LPs are so amazing.
@@robertmcmanus9185 Who cares? We all have the original DSOTM. I said nothing about Rogers new version and don't care. Millions enjoy Pinks earlier good stuff. "The Wall" debuted its first time to the World in Los Angeles, Downtown sports arena, in February 1980. I was there. The opening to the Wall was astounding with two drummers and the band wearing stage headphones. The sound clarity of the band punched with an audio quality you would expect from David Gilmour, Nick Mason, Roger Waters and Richard Wright, along with a big cast of musicians. The set list was long and wide in musical range. To say it left a large impression would be a huge understatement. The old guys we see today were young looking guys in 1980, obviously. During Pink Floyd's live concerts in the 1980s, Nick Mason had a backup drummer because the band's music often featured complex arrangements and sound effects that were difficult for a single drummer to replicate live.
I think with the redux version, it's meant to give priority to the message. With the original Dark Side album, people might not be focused so much on the message and the lyrics but rather the music (like David's guitar solos, Dick Parry's saxophone solos, Rick and Clare's input on Great Gig, etc.). So maybe the new recording are intentionally not meant to be superb so people can focus on the message of the lyrics. That's my take on it.
Roger is still living in the past. Move on and just let it go. The rest of the band continued on with their lives, but sadly, Roger is still stuck in his perpetual lament. Sad....
He's an old fashioned communist whose god is historical dialectic materialism so the past (as understood 'correctly') is god as it shapes current conflicts of class with the opposition class represented by the other individuals, specifically Gilmour, in PF
Roger is a great artist and has the ability to portray his ideas in simple but intelligent way. Unfortunately, he like many creative people, are not good leaders. The problem is he doesn't see that, in his opinion everyone else is at fault for not heeding what he has to say. He makes that apparent when he muses how perhaps people might get it now after it has "been a part of our lives for over fifty years now". I personally don't think Roger has the answers to the right questions, but he is relevant and has many good points and observations. But he is unable to deliver any solutions, and should realise no one person can.
experience shows he can compose and make lyrics ,nothing more, listen to his rubbish music, and spend time,i am sure you listen in private more to david gilmoure than him
@@babakhomayounfal I think his bass playing is very nice. It's super simple, but always in the pocket and always serves the song. But as you say, I'm generally listening to the guitar more than anything.
Most artists are not good leaders. For solutions, well, the problem is we can't seem to get society to bring in ANY solutions. I congratulate anybody making a public stand, because it only puts crosshairs on you. As for music, keep in mind Dave isn't the producer of floyd albums either. Bob Ezrin and others usually are. Roger was so pissed off at Ezrin that he put him in a song when he chose floyd over waters. Waters knows its the producer who can make hits. Dave is a musician and would just play forever. Roger writes songs but they aren't commercial. They owe most of their success to producers and engineers. Thats not selling them short but there are lots of good guital players and songwriters out there.
@@mikearchibald744 one of the problems, is too many people that are "standing up", have their own agenda and don't necessarily have any answers. A lot of them are just distractions from the real issues. I don't congratulate any of them. Also it takes more than a good producer to make a good album. It takes a good band or artist to do that.
@@neilmclennan7191 I said it took Bob Ezrin to make HITS. There are thousands of 'good albums', but without hits you generally don't go far. Money was a hit off Dark Side, but Waters wrote it as a blues acoustic. They 'sissied it up', but it also got radio play and helped make them millionaires. There are millions of great musicians in the world, there's a reason nobody crows about David Gilmour or Rick Wrights solo albums. Waters had better songs and concepts, but his albums never went any further. I don't even understand your other point. Roger is on Ukraine's 'kill list', so it takes guts to stand up and make your feelings known. I see no way that an artist talking to an interviewer is 'distracting' from anything, you are certainly under no obligation to listen to them. It sounds more like you don't agree wiht his views, which is fine, but that doesn't change the fact it takes guts to be an artist and say the things he does. Granted, I don't spend that much time thinking about him or congratulating him, I'm just glad he does it and wish more would. But then I've also said that its a good way for him to get free publicity for his tours as well, so like I said, I congratulate him for being openly political, but don't get carried away with it.
Always considered Meddle to be the last example of Pink Floyd as a full four member band as what is reflected in the songs, the playing, and especially the chemistry. I think Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking was Roger's last great album, strengthened by the work from Clapton and Sanborn.
I honestly love his REDUX version. It’s a great companion piece to the original, seen through an older man’s eyes. Literally the theme of the record is life and death
The Wall speaks for itself. And the Pro & Cons of Hitchhiking is also a MASTERPIECE!!! They are my favorite band of all time who I discovered as an 8 year old American kid being in military family and moving to Great Britain in 76. I recall sitting In the backseat of the family Celica while my parents were driving us through the British countryside. And a song came over British radio that haunted me and hooked me immediately. I was too young to know who I was hearing. But it’s one of those magical moments in life that permanently engraved itself into my psyche. Sitting in the backseat, taking in the gloomy beauty that only England can and Hearing what I later learned was Pigs on the Wing part 1 over the radio. No one was taking. The skies were grey and raining. Perfect atmosphere for such music. And I never looked back. And fortunately got to see them play back in the day. They’re issues with one another change nothing for me. The magic and majesty of what they created are forever in my soul. Special. Sacred. Magical. Pure bliss that has helped me though many challenges in my own life. I love them all. I don’t know them personally. But I do spiritually. And that’s all I need.
Thank you for the video. Maybe its already mentioned elsewhere in the comments. But About Face is NOT DG’s debut album as you stated in the video. It’s his second.
This statement by the OP clearly indicated someone with either a severe lack of knowledge or a severe bent towards Waters. Stopped watching at that point.
As much as I love Roger and his music, his new version of The Dark Side of the Moon, is just that, HIS version! It's his latest solo album, and that's all. The only people who can ever update the album, are the members of Pink Floyd, themselves!
Don't worry, if you scrape hard enough you can get all the Roger off of you. Just use some rubbing alcohol after you get the last of him off, & you should be fine. Then put on David's first solo album & you'll be on the mend in no time.
Enjoyed you sharing your thoughts and perspective. I'd like to hear more about the motives, preconceptions, and conflict that coalesced into what is Pink Floyd's discography. 'Consider other videos similarly focused on the 'Artistic process of other Rock bands of the 70s.
I was genetically infused with Pink Floyd 45 years ago. Been through all the bs, break up, lawsuit, bickering, and name-calling. And yep, Roger is unique, makes bold statements, tries bold new things others would not agree with or understand. Don't care. It's his life, his decisions, and he's free to do as he wishes. Like anyone is. I love every member of Floyd, who created the music that's been in my soul for most of my life. Nothing any one of them says or creates is going to change that. No complaints here. Peace all!
To be honest, Roger, Dave, and Nick had a chance that Rick was a part of Pink Floyd, his contribution is what makes that Legendary Sound we all know and love, they should be more grateful
cheers for this. brilliantly done. I enjoy all PF work, from Piper at the Gates through Division Bell. I love David's records and Roger's records, including DSOTM redux.
I really can't give you enough thumbs up for your comment. I feel like you do and always say that we had two Pink Floyd, no matter what David or Roger or Polly(😋) have to say about.
Roger's new version reminds me of every great TV show that has been turned into a movie. Eg., 'The Beverly Hillbillies', 'Sgt. Bilko', 'Car 54 Where Are You', 'The Flintstones', 'Leave it to Beaver', 'Wild, Wild West', etc,...
Rogers Redux album is a great piece of work and beautifully compliments the original. Retrospectively I'm glad they split up because we get two great bodies of work with profound messaging. Its a mistake to pit one artist against the other or one version of DSOTM against the other. One version is for the day and now we have a version for the night. I love both Gilmour and Waters and the worlds a better place for having both of them in it.
Roger is amazing human and artist! You forget to mention the album "Amused to Death" (which has incredible live songs) and "Is this the Life We Really Want" (also great lives). I went on the "This is Not a Drill" tour and what caught my attention was not "Antoher Brick in The Wall" massively driving audiences of various generations crazy, but Roger's solo songs. They touched me deeply. Some I didn't know and I became a double fan. Roger sings many songs from his solo career, Pink Floyd versions and of course, re-recordings are natural. And we want more redux versions! For fans who don't like new things: the originals will always be there anyway. And in the history of human music.
David Gilmour's solo albums set him apart from Pink Floyd with new original music. Roger Waters is still playing Pink Floyd concerts. They're both great. I'd love to see them do a limited run of Pink Floyd concerts together.
Gilmour more or less repeats the same fills with hardly a voice nowadays, Waters can't sing past a whisper, Rick is dead, and Nick is well just Nick. We don't need a half baked reunion.
@@porflepopnecker4376 appreciate the music/concept or not; purchase or not; express an opinion or not. Either way Roger Waters has done this. Do you you feel your opinion matter? If so how/why? Genuinely would like to understand...
Pink Floyd was the first band that learned how to really peddle depression for big big cash. Gilmour+Mason+Wright took the band in a different direction that was a lot more fun!!
haven’t heard the whole album [yet]. listened to the stems and bought one track. Any Color You Like .. which I think after many repeated listens is a wonderful track. I have never liked the early period (w/Syd), I think him leaving was the best gift they could have received. it opened David / Roger up to the wonderful ideas that spilled out for years. we should be grateful that many of the key members are still alive + willing to do live shows, where so many musicians have died off (in other bands).
Syd was the one who introduced the 30 minutes of space rock, mixed with romanticism that Waters couldn't replicate so wrote about madness and depression,oh great!
I don't think a lot of people understand what a gift this re-recording is... Up intill now, we've lived in a reality where Pink Floyd is one of the greatest bands that ever lived. This allows Pink Floyd fans to experience a world where Pink Floyd sucked...
I think that is the pettiest response ever. Waters is an ego narcissist, and can’t stand the fact that Pink Floyd existed without him. Even more, the fact that he lost in court all rights to the name, and even worse that he has to split royalties with the band members, because in his head he believes that all that music is HIS and not theirs. When Taylor Swift re-recorded her albums for a completely different reason. He probably thought, why can’t I do the same. I believe Waters was extremely talented, but the other members of PF completed him. On the other hand the band had 3 very successful albums without RW, while he keeps singing The Wall over and over and over. I believe ha had a few solo albums, but nothing anyone remembers. And if you know anything about narcissist, they never go away, and will never admit defeat, so this feud is far from over.
The remakes Roger did with Mother, Two Suns in the Sunset and The Gunners Dream were, in my opinion, superb. In no way a replacement for the originals, just a different take on them. The saxophone solo in The Gunners Dream is epic, so how on earth do you even think about altering it, well Roger managed it with the vocal version of the solo, and it was awesome. A number of years ago many bands started doing " Unplugged" versions of their work, and most embraced the different sound. To be honest I couldn't give a shit if he was still bitter as all I'm bothered about is the music. The other side of the fence isn't much better either, as that shit stirring cow Poly Samson needs to keep her nose out, unless of course she posts remarks like that about everyone she doesn't know, but doesn't like.
It’s sad how folks who made such classic works bicker. I think Roger’s embrace of social media and venom has tarnished the whole, the cohesive nature of the push and pull to achieve greatness. Only they know what went down but I just want great art. He loves controversy but I just love the music. I guess it’s the fact that I don’t like the parents fighting. I haven’t heard the redux. I will give it a spin. Have you done a video on Radiohead. Ironically they still seem like a well known secret and continue, not unlike the Floyd musical signposts, continue to inspire me. One speaks of the world I was born of and the other, the even more fraught world we are blindly being led into.‘Ambition makes you look pretty ugly’….. I hear it differently depending on my mood. I feel lucky to have the gift of joy, and artists to fill my cup.
While I love DSOTM, I think there’s something to be said for just leaving things, especially masterpieces, alone. Don’t mess with perfection. Let it always be remembered how it was, no need to re-release it. Then again, if you look at how many times the Pink Floyd online store has re-released DSOTM on vinyl & CD, it’s clear they don’t share the same sentiment.
"Then again, if you look at how many times the Pink Floyd online store has re-released DSOTM on vinyl & CD, it’s clear they don’t share the same sentiment." This has no relation to your first sentiment and it's clear you have no idea what you're talking about. The first statement is also silly. The original album still exists. It has not changed. This isn't the holy grail... reinterpretations do not scuff the original or our perceptions of the original unless you let it. There is absolutely nothing wrong with reinvisionings and alternate versions and to say otherwise speaks loudly towards your closed-mindedness. He's the guy who wrote the fucking thing. He can do what he wants. "While I love DSOTM, I think there’s something to be said for just leaving things, especially masterpieces, alone." That's WHY you want it left alone, because you love it and hold it in this weird regard. These are not conflicting statements and it makes you look disingenious to phrase it in that manner.
Poor Roger, he's so devoid of anything else to occupy him in his old age that he has to keep up with the Pink Floyd war of words so that he's not forgotten altogether.
If you enjoy artists for their art and believe they have a right to be an artist to produce their view of things... simply enjoy the struggle within yourself to accept or reject the message and the reasons why.
You can't deny Roger is a great lyricist and story teller but at the same time David is a songwriter. When was the last time you listened to a story time CD.
Listening it right now. It's.... quite good. Production is stellar and tasteful. It's chatty, sure. I like Roger's speaking voice but it's clear his focus is more on the words nowadays. As long as it's taken for what it is it feels like some nice addition to me.
My best friend in High School introduced me to Pink Floyd - the DSOTM album. I had never heard anything like it before, and we thought, "Beatles? Meh. THESE guys have revolutionized the recording industry!" I joined the navy after I graduated. By the time I left my first post-boot camp training, I had every Pink Floyd album to date (except maybe Piper - can't remember) in my sea bag (personal effects) - some were 8-tracks. The re-make is gonna be priceless, considering how worn out my original LP is! :)
Roger is Pink Floyd, anyone who know's know's, having two version's can only be better than having one, too many mainstream journalists and critics etc are slagging Roger off more for his politics than his music.
The Final Cut album was to be the last since Roger was departing. I like that the band continued but I fully agree that without Roger, they should have changed their name. Because it's not truly Pink Floyd anymore. Course this could be argued when Sid was kicked out. As a visual artist, airbrush etc, and if I was collaborating with another artist. I would only expect to have my name credited too. I always like how when Zepplin said when John Bonham died, Led Zepplin is no more. And they stayed true to that. ~Panzik Artistry
Trying to understand floyd and their creative differences is like trying to understand Israel and palestine. Floyd are nothing GREAT without Gilmore. But we recognise Rogers input and vision. It's a real shame they didn't land together creatively.
The truth is, if the only musical output we heard from floyd members was their solo work, nobody today would know or care who they are. Their childish squabbling has stained the legacy of one of rock's greatest bands
By the time they started releasing solo albums, they had already done most of their best work. How well they collaborated together may have been one reason their solo albums weren't as good as Pink Floyd's best work, but it also could have been that they were past their creative prime as individuals.
I truly believe if David had just gone with what Roger had wanted during the writing process, Pink Floyd wouldn't be nearly as loved as they are now. Their collaboration created some timeless masterpieces.
Of course, all great bands are lightning in a bottle, very rarely can they achieve as much solo as they do together, the tensions and egos drive the creative process, The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac and of course Floyd are examples of this
I was fortunate to see The Wall in New York .easily one of the best rock experiences of my life and I was lucky enough to be a DJ in the late seventies early eighties and saw everyone.
It pains me to say this, but I wish Roger would just leave the original Pink Floyd history where it was and move on with more of his solo projects. Those classic PF albums have become a part of the broader musical tapestry for millions of us and should never be altered/updated or redone. It Is Art. I dig nearly everything Roger did solo, and I also like most of what the reformed Pink Floyd achieved, so neither of these newer entities need to sully what was indeed a magical union before going separate ways.
@@saint.vitus.7775 "I haven't listened to any Water solo stuff since Pros and Cons was released." I tried a few more times, I wanted to like his stuff, but tbh most of it is pretty mediocre.... and the rest of it was just shite.
There's no denying the skills of Roger as a lyricist, musician, composer etc. but oh my...the personality.....probably etched into a lot of characters in his creations. I'm so glad Floyd created so much material before the fall out !!!!!!
revealing work much appreciated- any records of men involved in the childhood years- she didn't raise him alone- post war england wasn't a stroll in the park!
The first words out of Waters' mouth are beefing with Gilmour. It's like he's stuck in an ego-driven negative feedback loop in which he simply cannot stop perpetuating this one-sided feud. Also - I don't think the 'war-mongers' are gonna suddenly change their plans because Roger recorded a different version of DSOTM. What an utter narcissist.
It was a narcissistic exercise by Waters, he wanted to prove that TDSOTM popularity owed nothing to Gilmour, Wright and Mason, the biggest problem for Waters is that Floyd's success owes as much to Gilmours guitar and Wrights keyboard, you would think he would take his head out of his arse long enough to realise his solo career didn't have the same impact as his career in Floyd.
His solo career has out sold david gilmours. DG just lives off of the themes and songs created by Roger waters. Sorry. I like both of them, but to think that DG would amount to more than a session musician without rogers song writing is asinine. Davids music writing is incredibly weak, his themes are loose.
One of the reasons Gilmour wanted to record as Pink Floyd was because on his solo tour (1984) he only sold 200 tickets for a gig in Birmingham, and the rest of the tour dates weren't big sellers either, so he needed the Pink Floyd brand much more than Waters did.
Why mess with a classic album like The Darkside of the Moon? Reminds me of why the Cure have not released an official album in so many years. Robert Smith doesn't want to taint or tarnish the bands legendary legacy like Roger Waters has done. Wow! 😮

Roger was only one of the four. Each member was amazing at their craft. Three members wanted to continue Pink Floyd and I'm so happy they did.
Agreed, but never quite as good.
@@TryptychUK "Agreed, but never quite as good."
True, neither Floyd nor Waters were as good without each other as they were together.

Roger cannot get over the fact that David's music always outsells his lyrics by millions of units every single release.

Facts.

"He's trying to pull a Taylor Swift" was my first thought as well, and I haven't heard anything that makes me think it's anything but that.

Totally agree.

Roger is a great artist and has the ability to portray his ideas in simple but intelligent way. Unfortunately, he like many creative people, are not good leaders. The problem is he doesn't see that, in his opinion everyone else is at fault for not heeding what he has to say.
Agree.
I agree.
absolutely have to agree. seems a shame that so many people in these comments are so focused on bringing roger and his hard work down.
Sitting in the backseat, taking in the gloomy beauty that only England can and
Hearing what I later learned was Pigs on the Wing part 1 over the radio.
Like most later Pink Floyd albums, musically they are brilliant, but lyrically, they're depressing as hell. Roger Waters IS Pink, but not Pink Floyd.
Aside from people like Roger grating on me, Ditto. That music has gotten me through some very hard times & soothes the soul.
1978.
As much as I love Roger and his music, his new version of The Dark Side of the Moon, is just that, HIS version! It's his latest solo album, and that's all. The only people who can ever update the album, are the members of Pink Floyd, themselves!
Roger has grown on me through the decades. Carry on, good sir!
Don't worry, if you scrape hard enough you can get all the Roger off of you. Just use some rubbing alcohol after you get the last of him off, & you should be fine. Then put on David's first solo album & you'll be on the mend in no time.
@topazure74 every time I see or hear his voice I want to plug my ears and close my eyes. What a horrid freak he is. Bitter twisted vile cretin..
me too.
Enjoyed you sharing your thoughts and perspective. I'd like to hear more about the motives, preconceptions, and conflict that coalesced into what is Pink Floyd's discography. 'Consider other videos similarly focused on the 'Artistic process of other Rock bands of the 70s.
Errrr, money?
He is the songwriter of most of the great PF. He is a master with more than just music.
Lyricist without a doubt. Songwriter... that I am sure he is not.
Peace all!
good approach, seconded.
The roger shows are probably the best. They are very powerful. I went to one at the O2
Thanks for watching!
I really can't give you enough thumbs up for your comment. I feel like you do and always say that we had two Pink Floyd, no matter what David or Roger or Polly(😋) have to say about.
I agree with everything except for the DSOTM redux part. I think it’s utter trash. I’d even go so far as to say it is painful to listen to.
Good little consumer.
You love everything? Sounds omnivorous
😂😂😂😂 Goid point.
I think we like them all together.
Promoting Jewhatred is not very new, and it isnt progressive as well.
David Gilmour's solo albums set him apart from Pink Floyd with new original music. Roger Waters is still playing Pink Floyd concerts. They're both great. I'd love to see them do a limited run of Pink Floyd concerts together.
the y are too old to make Pink Floyd reunions
Yup, if you want to see the Floyd perform, then a 'tribute' band is the closest you'll get.
Gilmour more or less repeats the same fills with hardly a voice nowadays, Waters can't sing past a whisper, Rick is dead, and Nick is well just Nick. We don't need a half baked reunion.
Thanks for doing this. Nice work. I see no reason to not embrace both versions of the Dark Side Album. It is ridiculous to do otherwise.
No, it isn't. It's merely choosing not to "embrace" something this bland and unnecessary.
@@porflepopnecker4376 appreciate the music/concept or not; purchase or not; express an opinion or not. Either way Roger Waters has done this. Do you you feel your opinion matter? If so how/why? Genuinely would like to understand...
@@porflepopnecker4376 Totally agree!
@@marksharman8029 No, apparently, your opinion resolves this for everyone! 🤣
Pink Floyd was the first band that learned how to really peddle depression for big big cash.
Gilmour+Mason+Wright took the band in a different direction that was a lot more fun!!
I think Roger’s it’s a great example of being true artist speaking the truth, as it is .
Thanks Sir; Roger waters .
Great review! A sensible one at last!
haven’t heard the whole album [yet]. listened to the stems and bought one track.
It's ridiculous, but Any Colors You Like written by Dave and Rick.
Syd was the one who introduced the 30 minutes of space rock, mixed with romanticism that Waters couldn't replicate so wrote about madness and depression,oh great!
It was basically his baby, but every member helped create the original DSOTM LP. Roger, don't screw with perfection.
Mate, I think you’ve misunderstood the comment…. It meant precisely the opposite of that to which you responded.
We definitely lost out after Roger left I often think about what they may have given us all if they put differences aside and continued making music
This is a great and serious explanation of this new DSOTM. And that for a relatively young guy. Congratulations and thank you David.
"Then again, if you look at how many times the Pink Floyd online store has re-released DSOTM on vinyl & CD, it’s clear they don’t share the same sentiment."
This has no relation to your first sentiment and it's clear you have no idea what you're talking about.
WAS a great lyricist and storyteller.
Waters' lyrics are trash. All that shit can be summed up in three words: "The World Sucks". That's all he ever writes about.
Rogers well of musical inspiration dried up a long long time ago . Rehashing tours of The Wall , now reworking Darkside ...
Listening it right now. It's.... quite good. Production is stellar and tasteful. It's chatty, sure. I like Roger's speaking voice but it's clear his focus is more on the words nowadays. As long as it's taken for what it is it feels like some nice addition to me.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. If something's not BROKE, the it DOESN'T need FIXED!
Sorry to be the thorn in your paw, Roger.
I take the new version as an unexpected gift. Its its own thing and I love it.
I didn't watch this video because I have washed my hands of Roger "I'll always be relevant" Waters.
Me too. And like you, I find the comment section to be a lot of fun.🤭
I predict you'll buy another copy of the original.
The problem with Roger is that he believes people need to receive his genius with gratitude.
NOTHING can replace or better the original Dark Side of the Moon.
You're far kinder to waters than I would be.
Trying to understand floyd and their creative differences is like trying to understand Israel and palestine. Floyd are nothing GREAT without Gilmore. But we recognise Rogers input and vision. It's a real shame they didn't land together creatively.
What about piper at the gates of dawn? Great album no Gilmour
That statement is by some distance off the mark my friend…..
Amused to Death no Gilmour
gilmour solo work isn't very good.
Subscribed! This was so tastefully and eloquently done. ❤ Hearts across the board ❤
I hope I'm not the first person to point out that About Face wasn't Gilmour's first album.
The truth is, if the only musical output we heard from floyd members was their solo work, nobody today would know or care who they are. Their childish squabbling has stained the legacy of one of rock's greatest bands
Yeah, because Roger Waters put all the brilliant songs he had into the pink floyd albums. David Gilmour never wrote a brilliant song in his life.
Of course, all great bands are lightning in a bottle, very rarely can they achieve as much solo as they do together, the tensions and egos drive the creative process, The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac and of course Floyd are examples of this
It's a work of pure Ego.
Nick Mason: “NO CRRRUUUSST!” Those scenes at the Abbey Road cafe make me so hungry…
I’ll finish the subject line “………is beyond me !”
"About Face" is his second album!!
Spoiler- Because he is an ego driven narcissist and it has to be all about him.
At least Roger has a spine and actually stands for something. As opposed to useless @unts that just parrot what their paymasters want to hear.
I think these features what makes him unique and a great artist
Really not, you couldn’t be more wrong about someone
@@ralofwow2773 bet I could, you sound like a really smart person.
You are soooo correct! Right on the money!
If Roger Waters could redo God's six day creation of the earth, moon, stars, the animals plus Adam and Eve, he would!!
Lol Adam and eve 🤣🤣🤣
I was fortunate to see The Wall in New York .easily one of the best rock experiences of my life and I was lucky enough to be a DJ in the late seventies early eighties and saw everyone.
WOw. this was a great video. Thanks for taking the time.
Well luckily we can choose to ignore any of his one-upsmanship projects. I haven't listened to any Water solo stuff since Pros and Cons was released.
No one's buying the new stuff. This is the only way he can make money
@@saint.vitus.7775 "I haven't listened to any Water solo stuff since Pros and Cons was released."
I tried a few more times, I wanted to like his stuff, but tbh most of it is pretty mediocre.... and the rest of it was just shite.
David allowed his wife to take control. She's the Sharon Osborne of PF.
no lie.
Why do people that personally dislike Waters watch videos about him and comment?
Maybe to understand why they took him seriously in the past.
Errr..The first words used by whoever put together this video actually. Which seems to have been cobbled together from work “borrowed” from others.
@@annoyingbstard9407Okay, i'll conceed that point - LOL. Congrats on living up to your name ;-)
@@saint.vitus.7775 Here to help.
definitely not a one sided feud.
Roger Waters, trapped in a time-loop ...... still living on the dark side of the moon.
Damn...
Why mess with a classic album like The Darkside of the Moon? Reminds me of why the Cure have not released an official album in so many years. Robert Smith doesn't want to taint or tarnish the bands legendary legacy like Roger Waters has done. Wow! 😮
