they experimented wildly and were rewarded handsomely for it, not just monetarily but artistically. they were able to take their ideas quite far and wide
Remains to say that the band was far from the scheme of repeating songs. Each performance was an improvisation on a set of ideas, which explains the great differences from one recorded live version to the next one.
I am from the future and right now its only 12hrs or so until 2025 rolls in. Today we're enlightened enough to know that this was really some of their best music despite what all the american, beer swilling, whiskey drunks think/thought who scream "YEEEAAA!" when Comfortably Numb comes on the radio before passing out in their chair or car seat. Personally I think most of their live stuff, minus The Wall and a few others excluded for obvious reasons (some albums can't be replicated on stage, people can try their hearts out but it doesn't always work) is truly the best they ever made. Saucerful of Secrets feels like they wrote it just for me. Chaos, near infinite chaos, the drums in the deep like some JRR Tolkien nightmare (not a Peter Jackson daydream about the books), then the transition to an angelic voice and melody for the ending which says "hey, things ARE going to be OK despite the universe seeming to be nothing but wild random violence" without having to use a single word. That's deep. Listening to this I can't help but cry, my best friend died a few weeks back from a nasty stage 4 through whole body, and this song reminds me of him. Or rather how I feel inside right now or have for a while now. These different live versions are amazing though. Love improv by masters of the game. Even live "mistakes" are turned around to become something more enjoyable like Zeppelin and Sabbath. Makes it more unique than plain studio albums. When Gilmore does his thing at the end, usually there's tears just flowing down my face, for now I can't help it.
Yep, Experimental psychedelelia indeed, they were trying ways of creating their own "sound" or style if you like, three years from this they were releasing one of the most experimental and influential albums of all time, The Dark Side Of The Moon, reaching number one in both sides of the Atlantic. The foundations were being laid down by this time, also there's a great live presentation recorded with no audience at the Filmore in 1970 and shortly after an amazing film Live in Pompeii.. they were indeed a very experimental band, creating soundtrack for movies while exploring new uncharted grounds.. if Ummagumma is not an experimantal psychedelic album I don't know what it is. Their album covers created by an art design group Hipgnosis reflect that experimental psychedelia. The Piper at The Gates of Dawn A Saucerful of secrets More Ummagumma Atom Heart Mother Meddle Obscured By Clouds The Dark side of the Moon ...
I liked the early Pink Floyd. From Piper at the Gates up to Meddle, which is a very underrated album. Except for Atom Heart, this Orchestra meets Rock never ever Worked. An orchestra kills all thats great about Rock Music. German Band Can knew that, Irmin Schmidt is an award winning classical Conductor and Arranger and they never went into this trap. Anyway, Pink Floyd made some great music, songs like Grantchester Meadow and Fat old sun are perfectly capturing the feel of the time. Dark side has its moments, some beautiful lyrics by Roger Waters and Dave Gilmore finding his trademark solo style, but its also their turn to become more conventional. Concerning psychedelic Albums of the area I would prefer You by Gong and the Confessions of Dr Dream by Kevin Ayers even so Confessions suffers a bit from overproduction.
@ Yep. Roger was right: Dark Side finished them. I like the later stuff, but this is the era for me. I bought Ummagumma early on in my fandom, and it remains very special. Also Saucerful of Secrets. Atom Heart Mother is a masterpiece.
This work is at its essence, like a painting painted on an infinite canvas at an ever more laborious pace but never able to find an end. The listener seeks and must only accept a denouement that brings him as close as possible to an intersection whose outcome is chaotic grandiloquence. Nevertheless, good pieces of music though for a long walk under the rain through the countryside 🦄🦎🪰🍀
A Saucerful of Secrets- from Chaos to sublime enlightenment .
This was Careful With That Axe, Eugene...
At the beginning, and then they venture into A Saucerful of Secrets. Classic stuff...
My favourite era.

Awesome thanks for sharing

I agree with you. This is the reason I am an avid collector of live bootlegs from the Floyd and the Grateful Dead as well

And roger them ultimately millionaire using backing tracks vocals 😂😂😂what a fake he has become
And not forgetting another band that liked to improvise during this period and played this venue back then.. Tangerine Dream
Once upon a time they were an psychedelic experimental Band. Thanks for the upload.
What? This sounds like good old Floyd to me.

Everything before Dark Side is my favourite Floyd era.
