The thing that I've always loved about CRTs is the improved sense of depth you get. I'm not exactly sure why it always strikes me as such, but it's more like looking through a window than LCD panels are. I hope I can afford to buy a decent one by the time I have enough space to set it up properly.

I think its because they dont use pixels. It creates this more "real" look to it plus the amazing contrast and the motion response.

@@masterodst1 It could also be because the tube itself is designed so the image is cast onto the large glass bulb that we see, but there is space between that and the electron gun, so behind the glass there is empty space, so some find that looking into a crt gives a better sense of depth, because behind the glass is literally empty space

if you can afford the space consumption of a Sony HDCRT why not get one for less than 100 USD if even possible and if it is in a bad internal shape flip it on one of the marketplaces for the same amount? 17" VGA could be something for you because the cheap VGA to Scart and wise versa adapters actually work but are limited to NTSC or PAL depending on where you order it e.g. UK or US. Got a bit nostalgic when I saw this. I miss those CRTs especially for the colors. Yes, modern panels with HDR support can look really good. But there is something about old TVs and monitors that can’t be replicated by modern LCD displays. It’s like old film against modern digital photo and video. I have always the feeling that the old method produced much better life like colors. Or I’m just getting old :D

@@davexmit Yeah I remember comparing my non HD (but capable of progresive scan 480p/ and had RGB scart inputs) Sony Triniton 32" flatscreen CRT TV to my first full HD LCD and was so underwhelmed lol, 1080p may have looked focused and sharp, but 480p on the CRT looked much nicer with proper blacks and true colors that poped of the screen, nothing beat that T.V for gaming, even the 360 looked great on it but I gave in to a IPS LG 48" in the end and sold the Sony, shame as I didn't realise how usefull the CRT would be for PS2/GC/DC/XBOX/N64/etc. I've made do with emulation since then, untill recently I picked up a beautiful as new Hyundai Image Quest CRT VGA monitor and I can't believe how good it looks with everthing from SNES/MD with nice juicy scanlines or GameCube on dolphin running @ 1600x1200p looks jaw droping, as does modern games, Indies like Steamworld DIG 1&2 look incredible, Shovel Knight. Playing Doom 3 @ 120Hz with no lag or motion blur what so ever just can't be beaten.
A high resolution/Hz CRT monitor actually feels like something that was just released, cutting edge almost, because I'm used to my 32" 144Hz G-Sync gaming LCD which not only looks terrible and flat comaped to the almost 3 dimensional image the CRT produces everything I play on the LCD feels sluggish and unreponsive, if you don't want to spoil your enjoyment from your modern LCD monitor I'd stay away from using a good CRT, I can't seem to go back to the LCD now, if only I could get a 32" HD CRT monitor I would be set. I know OLED is supposed to finaly entering the monitor market with 27/32" panels, but it's going to be a good couple of years before we see a 32" 120Hz OLED monitor under the £$800 mark, and even then OLED still have the motion blur and a fixed native resolution, allthough I'm sure they are working on imroving the motion resolution of OLED, I doubt it will ever match CRT though, but as long as it gets close that will be good enough.

Can I just say as someone who happens to have a vision problem on top of someone who also speed runs video games both modern and retro having my CRT is a must. Look I get it modern TVs can look better but the biggest problem is that the input delay does end up being more noticeable due to having a vision problem. Look it's more about adjusting your timing with what you see on top of the difference in screen resolution which drastically can change the sizes of how things appear (It's one of the huge reasons I hate Sony not letting me have access to all of my Vita games on my PSTV due to how small the text in games ends up being and zooming in prevents you from getting the full experience without constantly moving things.)
But yeah I've got to say I am proud to use my CRT, despite it not being the best whenever I can so I can actually accommodate for my eyesight problems.

No display technology can match a top end CRT monitor for image quality, OLED gets very close in some areas, and if you want 55" or more it deffinitly wins in that regard but otherise CRT can't be beaten. I'll take a 19" or 21" CRT over a 65" LCD anyday, maybe not OLED though, for modern consoles a big OLED is the way to go if you have the money. That said a VGA CRT monitor is a great option if you won't/can't spend more than a couple hundred on a gaming display as a good one 19" CRT monitor looks sublime with modern games, or a 21", 16:9 looks fine on a 4:3, although I prefer 4:3 when possible which sadly is less and less in modern titles.

@@EposVox I don't currently have my Switch hooked up to my HDMI-to-component converter, but pretty sure 480p gives you native 4:3, whereas higher resolutions are widescreen. Not sure your use-case warrants it (given you've a 16:9 CRT that can process higher resolution content), but it's really nice on 4:3 HD CRTs (and easier to further downscale to 240p if you wanted to get scanlines).
I haven't tried my 360 or PS3 into my CRT yet. Don't have the HDMI-to-component converter currently hooked up as I found mine really susceptible to wavey video noise (probably power-related). Damn dude I would kill for a 16:9 BVM. That's nice as hell it must've taken forever to find something like that. Also I totally know what you mean about being at a disadvantage using a smaller CRT then a larger LCD. I was playing Destiny 2 on my ViewSonic A90-2 CRT and even though it looked incredible at 720p 120hz the game doesn't support 4:3 and puts black bars on the screen making the image even smaller. Tracking enemies in pvp was much harder and I ended up just switching back to my Asus VG27AQ for that game but I finished Cyberpunk on the CRT at 1600x1200 maxed settings with ray tracing and my god was it gorgeous plus the game supports 4:3 so you can use the entire screen space available. Graphically intense gorgeous slower paced games are what I play on the CRT now. A lot of those games (like red dead redemption 2) benefit so much more from cranking up the settings then they do by cranking up the resolution and with the black levels and colors of the CRT I honestly feel that LCDs still can't compete with the CRTs when it comes to just a quality image (although OLED is a different story). I think 4k is a waste of GPU resources and playing at a lower pixel perfect resolution with higher ingame settings is where it's at. 1080p and 1440p are more then enough pixels to get an amazing image.

I hate to be "that guy" but you don't need 120hz when using a CRT. You aren't missing out on ANYTHING. The whole reason high refresh rate exists on LCD monitors is due to the inherent issues with LCD as a technology. Mainly the slow ass speed. I guarantee you, a 60hz CRT next to a 120hz LCD, everyone will prefer the 60hz CRT regardless of the type of game you would play. It would feel smoother even though its less refresh rate.
The two main things high refresh is used to mitigate, is smoothness of the image and motion blur. The higher the refresh rate, the less motion blur you have. This is why 240hz gaming monitors are a thing. And why they now push 360hz gaming monitors. Even my TN panel Alienware 1080p240hz gaming monitor. 240hz is incredibly smooth compared to my Samsung VA panel which is only 144hz. You can tell the difference especially side by side. Now some might argue that TN pixel response is faster than VA, but pixel response generally doesn't relate to smoothness of refresh rate. BUT, both the VA and TN are rated 1ms grey to grey, if you even believe those ratings. Therefore they should be performing the same. And yet, the 240hz is smoother and has less motion blur than the 1440p144hz.... some might argue resolution and "your gpu might not be able to handle it" except I am rocking a 3950x with a 3090.... its not an issue for either resolution. I can even play some games in 8k granted around 30-60fps depending on title, older games more fps is capable.
So at the end of the day, a 60hz CRT will make you an FPS god. I remember when people were switching to from CRT to LCD. I didn't. I stayed on CRT and those people seemed to start playing worse (due to response times). Only when WIDESCREEN became a common thing for a cheap fair price, did I switch to LCD. And it was a 16:10 Acer monitor. Yeah, took me a long time to upgrade. And honestly the REAL reason I upgraded was my CRT died and we didn't have any repair shops that knew how to work on cathode displays....
Honestly if I was a company like ASUS with money to spend and "waste" in some peoples viewpoint. I would get my employees trained and such to develop a new age CRT monitor.... smaller footprint, lightweight, and yet still have that insane speed. Possibly shoot for widescreen format. And if light enough, VESA mountable. It has to be possible. Technology gets better and smaller. The "brain board" that runs these CRT displays could EASILY be made super tiny. Like raspberry pi small. WE have that kind of technology. Hell, look up the people taking old retro consoles and making new boards much much smaller with newer technology. Its insane how small they can make it compared to the original size....

    • @EposVox
      @EposVox  3 роки тому

I mean, I play at 120hz on PC CRT monitors all the time and it’s definitely better. And most ran at 75hz by default back in the day.
CRTs are illegal to make due to the environmental issues in both manufacturing and usage of them, not to mention our complete inability to safely dispose of them. The PCBs in them are hardly a concern, it’s the tubes themselves that are the issue.
You also can’t make them lightweight, because all that weight is in the tube. What you’ve described is basically an OLED, there’s nothing about what a CRT literally is: a cathode ray tube, that can be made smaller or lighter weight.
LCDs are finally catching up in terms of latency and responsiveness and game engines are finally working on improving their latency time too, as they’re just as impactful as display if not more. We’re getting there.
I love my CRTs for the look and flexibility in formats, but in terms of in-game advantage, we’re finally reaching the point that they’re not needed anymore.

The thing that ALWAY bugged me about modern flatscreens is the horrendous motion blur, no matter how good the screen, you always had smearing the second you moved your mouse.
The only thing that came close to a CRT was a 1080p TN BenQ with built-in Strobed Backlight and Black Frame Insertion, you could move your mouse at light speed and still see read the window you dragged across the screen. There was only a bit much crosstalk between the frames, but the colors... dear god the colors on that thing were the ABSOLUTE WORST I had ever seen and not because the panel sucked, but because BenQ decided to use a "1337 GAM0R" setup, you couldnt even fucking turn off...

They ruined Serious Sam 2 with its update adding dual wielding for any weapon and making the UZI from sounding bad, to still sound bad but shoot quicker than the Minigun. The tesla gun is bad too because it ruins the perfect balancing with the boring enemy spawns which still make sense for a game made for younger audiences and perfectly right in lore topics (enemies get spawned in since the first SS game). SS4 is just bad and wants you to stay put in the middle of the arena in the whole game or enemies spawn in T-Pose inside you and kamikazes explode -- rant over --

You mentioned Optical port hahahaha (heavy breathing) The only port that has neutral sound without any strange things like different mainboards make USB dacs sound different or YOU JUST BOUGHT an expensive mainboard but sounds awful or and HDMI audio return channel is expensive in some cases if you dont own a TV with the ports you need for audio. I actually have no device that has useful audio ports if I want a PS5 or series x and everything PS1, PS2, PS3 and Switch is routed into the Line-in which is the only good sounding port with maybe mic in that can add audio into my high end headphone setup.

There should be a gigantic class action suit aginst all makers of LCD / OLED brand makers, for making shoddy quality products over the years that does not last. On a CRT you could run at any resolution, you were not limited to NATIVE resolution to get the best quality. TRUE blacks, no lag, great colours and crazy brightness. OLED is the worst garbage people can buy, it does not last !!! colours shift over the years, OLED is worst than LED, etc. so yeah nothing beats CRT

My Plasma has pretty much been on 24/7 since 2011. I bought an LCD a couple years ago, it shattered the screen from the most minor impact, it fell forward on carpet.. whilist sitting on carpet..... Meanwhile the Plasmas seen 4 road trips, one of them 1200miles in the back of a UHaul.

Depends on what you mean by “2k” since there are no 2048x1080 TVs. If you mean 1080p, yes. I’d you mean 1440p, then yes but it will only run at 1080p so might be blurrier or more laggy
