I’d seen Maggie Smith in a few other movies before this - Evil Under the Sun, Death on the Nile, and Sister Act - but this is the performance that made me a lifelong fan when I first saw it more than 30 years ago. She’s irresistible here. RIP, Dame Maggie - you’ll be sorely missed.
I just can’t. Maggie Smith with her delivery and Neil Simon’s dialogue is just brilliant. I think I busted my stomach from laughing so hard. Perfection.
I've known this actress all my life and I have my parents to thank for that. They made a point to always watch British television. Rest in peace to one of the best actresses out there! 💗
This movie would've been a lot better if it had just been about those two - they were definitely the best thing about it. Great acting from them both, and the writing both witty and funny as well as surprisingly deep.
Absolutely, their scenes were by far the best in the movie. It takes talent Maggie Smith and Michael Caine to overcome Neil Simon’s stilted overly mannered dialogue
Sir Michael says in his early days he had trouble getting cast because he was young, blond & pretty, people thought he was gay (hoped?). I became a fan when he mentioned in his memoirs that NYC in the '70's was the party capital of the world (Studio 54 et al) because of the gay population (so true pre-AIDS). That he would play such a closeted character as Sidney - & play him so well! - is yet another reason to love him. Plus, he & Sir Roger Moore were friends. Envious!
Imagine if someone named "Eggs Benedict" was staying in the hotel. I could watch a play based on their characters and the banter back and forth. Both legendary actors.
Exactly . Insightful. The tempo is breezy each in their own world but they do care enough about each other that they hear each but both are self involved almost miserable in a difficult industry ! Neil Simon like Shakespeare needs intelligent ,dedicated craftman to really get performed well !
The wonderful Maggie Smith doing her best Kenneth Williams impersonation! Loved the friendship they had and her obvious admiration for his comedic talent which she emulates superbly here!
Watching this now on TCM (thank you, TCM! again & again). Saw it in theatres, so much better written & acted than I remembered (& I remembered it as being good). Jane Fonda is brilliant, as she fights for her daughter - & gives her up - who knew Neil Simon was a feminist?!
I saw this movie 40 yrs ago.... This is where she just lost her best actress nomination and this is where she needs reassurance But like all of us men we ignore these kind of moments.
And this is a master class on how to act through a bad script. Terms like @sshole and G_d damned are entirely American. This is not how British people speak at all.
Probably a bit of PC box ticking. Unknown black actors played pimps but Hollywood presented black stars like Cosby as ultra respectable, wealthy, successful, great guys. Ironic really, as Cosby and Pryor were both discredited later, Cosby for far more sinister reasons.
@@itsjemmabond because the content is very dated. From a cultural/political POV. A woman begging her clearly gay husband to sleep with her? In a light comedy? Maybe not...
There can't be many things worse than suddenly wanting Eggs Benedict late at night and then they're telling you the kitchen's closed.... God. Damn. I would head down to bust up a whole Reception desk and spend the night in jail.
Limo comments funny, Smith's friend, peer & co-star Dame Diana Rigg arrived in L.A. in a limo, when the show was canceled after a season they sent her to the airport in a station wagon.
Too many US references for a just off the plane English couple. Steel belted what? These roles should be played by Yanks, the dialogue is too American.
Ironic you'd grab the 'steel belted radial tyre' line, as steel belted radial tires were first introduced in Britain in 1950, and were pretty much standard equipment on cars in Britain by 1960. It was 1970 before the first US car came with steel belted radials. That reference marks the couple as being more British than their US hosts.
Well it was written by an American - the late, great Neil Simon, who penned many classic American comedies including 'The Odd Couple' and 'Barefoot in the Park'.

FYI--1978.

Rest in Paradise Dame Maggie Smith. Thank you for giving us 70 years of stunningly phenomenal performances!
I love that Maggie WON an Oscar for this.
RIP Dame Maggie. She & Caine were magic together. The only actor to win an Oscar playing an actor losing an Oscar.
Drunk Maggie Smith is truly a gift to the world. Actually, just Maggie Smith is too but especially Drunk Maggie Smith
This movie would've been a lot better if it had just been about those two - they were definitely the best thing about it. Great acting from them both, and the writing both witty and funny as well as surprisingly deep.
I totally agree 👍
Absolutely, their scenes were by far the best in the movie. It takes talent Maggie Smith and Michael Caine to overcome Neil Simon’s stilted overly mannered dialogue
I agree.
Only reason I watch.
I can see why she won an Oscar, love her acting skills
"Oh Sidney, I saw your private " 😅😅😅
ik its so funny 😭💀💀💀🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
One of Neil Simon's best. These two together were sheer brilliance.
0:45 Maggie: What won the award?
At first it was La La Land, and then it was Moonlight.
Lol! :)
Sidney, you A. H., you're lying!
One of my favorite movies. Maggie Smith and Michael Caine were absolutely perfect.
In the NBC movie London Suite, these characters were played by Kelsey Grammer and Patricia Clarkson. They tried hard but it just wasn't the same.
Sir Michael says in his early days he had trouble getting cast because he was young, blond & pretty, people thought he was gay (hoped?). they were. So was Walter Mathau. Bil Cosby and Richard Pryor - not so much....
Goodness is this really Dame Maggie Smith back in the day? She's gorgeous and hilarious here.
Amazing film , I first saw it when it was newly released and I have kept watching it since. These two together equals perfection.
Rest in Peace Dame Maggie Smith ❤
"Sydney..I have just thrown up on some of the best people in Hollywood...." What a funny line.
...Now is no time to be sensitive!
1:06 the most grand yet sassy way to walkout from a fight 😆
God bless thee magnificent incomparable Dame Maggie Smith!
The only good storyline in this movie... and BOY is it good!
These two are wonderful together. Two of the best. These two can play the phonebook and still get an Oscar nomination. Wonderful!
i dont think i could kept a straight face filming a scene like this this was funny as heck
Imagine if someone named "Eggs Benedict" was staying in the hotel. I could watch a play based on their characters and the banter back and forth. Both legendary actors.
Maggie Smith and Michael Caine make Neil Simon sound like Noel Coward's good stuff.
Ha ha... killer! Priceless......
Exactly . Insightful. The tempo is breezy each in their own world but they do care enough about each other that they hear each but both are self involved almost miserable in a difficult industry ! Neil Simon like Shakespeare needs intelligent ,dedicated craftman to really get performed well !
The way she held that apple and turned away chin up, “i want another drink, please…” is dope! 🔥
Sidney.....was I hit by a BUS?
Dame Maggie Smith is the best!
Saiman Quazi yes i know and she should have won more Oscars! now record that Grammy-winning audio album for the EGOT!! Lol
The amazing Maggie Smith.
Check out her duet with Dame Diana Rigg in Evil Under the Sun, them singing Cole Porter is the best 3way evuh!
@@unowen-nh9ov Oh yes - that Maggie Smith - Diana Rigg double act is just superb, the most glamorous Dames in the world!
‘I’ve aged Sidney’... love the tone change
Dame Maggie & Sir Michael deliver Neil Simon's dialogue like it's Sir Noel Coward's.
1:06 The way she left the room!!! 😎
With anger yet in a classy way 😆
R.I.P Neil Simon August 26th 2018.
I love how she said “category.”
We want the full movie version of this great funny movie uploaded by a good samaritan here ASAP! 😁
She sounds so natural it’s weird
RIP Maggie. We'll miss you.
Lovely gown!!
The wonderful Maggie Smith doing her best Kenneth Williams impersonation! Loved the friendship they had and her obvious admiration for his comedic talent which she emulates superbly here!
Rest in peace, Maggie Smith
Dame Maggie Smith is an International Treasure!
Mcgonagall x Alfred best anime ship Ever.
Loved it. Maggie was just wonderful
Damn it my favourite category lmao
Adoro tudo em Maggie.
A voz ... postura...excelente atriz
Like a brother and sister. By chemistry, behaviour and actual looks!
She won the Oscar and Golden Globe for this! 🤯
RIP Neil Simon. Genius.
Watching these two fight is gold
like she's actually going to whip up hollandaise in her condition
LOL! She'd struggle to use cutlery!
LOL
What a pair !
Maggie Smith was one of the best British actors and deserved the accolades she received.
Both actors cast in movies featuring Daniel Radcliffe
Maggie smith in the Harry Potter franchise and Michael Caine in Now you see me 2
Maggie Smith is all!
The Batman-Harry Potter crossover you never heard of!
Watching this now on TCM (thank you, TCM! again & again). Saw it in theatres, so much better written & acted than I remembered (& I remembered it as being good). Jane Fonda is brilliant, as she fights for her daughter - & gives her up - who knew Neil Simon was a feminist?!
Questa e" la differenza tra una Grande e un' ottima attrice...la linea sottilissima che sfiora, la leviga, ma non taglia mai dell' Overacting♥️
Maggie Smith is simply 'The Best'.
Maggie Maggie Maggie, still ever brilliant even after Downton Abbey. True Legend.
A.H . TWO letters that changed my life thank you Maggie!
I saw this movie 40 yrs ago....
This is where she just lost her best actress nomination and this is where she needs reassurance
But like all of us men we ignore these kind of moments.
I love the part (not shown here) when she’s in bed, practicing her ‘acceptance speech.’ She is so wonderfully actressy.
How does The Beverly Hills Hotel not have 24 hour room service?
It has to - must be some poetic licence on Neil Simon's part.
What mcgonagall is swearing what lol 🙌
She was really great...
Damn Bill Cosby for ruining this amazing comedy
Oh God, you're right - I forgot that A.H. Bill Cosby was in it!
Professor McGonagall and Alfred ❤️
LOVE LOVE LOVE
I have always thought that she is the female version of M. Caine.
0:38 I think he’s talking about Saving Private Ryan losing to Shakespeare in Love.
Does anyone else kinda wanna be in the same room as Drunk Maggie because I do
Fantastic movie!
wAS I HIT BY A BUS?????
Ever since seeing this, I've wanted some Eggs Benedict.
And this is a master class on how to act through a bad script. Terms like @sshole and G_d damned are entirely American. This is not how British people speak at all.
She sounds exactly the same
Delicious actress/actor delivering Neil Simon? Yum. and more Yum.
Brilliant film !
This movie was cute, but the Bill Cosby/Richard Pryor part was absurd.
Probably a bit of PC box ticking. Unknown black actors played pimps but Hollywood presented black stars like Cosby as ultra respectable, wealthy, successful, great guys. Ironic really, as Cosby and Pryor were both discredited later, Cosby for far more sinister reasons.
Same wallpaper as the golden girls.
I take it back Sidney; you are not a crud.
Am I still an arsehole?
Definitely!
Perfect. Great movie. So sad it wouldn't get made now.
Why not?
@@itsjemmabond because the content is very dated. From a cultural/political POV. A woman begging her clearly gay husband to sleep with her? In a light comedy? Maybe not...
Then The Cosby storyline..?
100% English crude 😂😂😂
And when he gets loudly HE GETS VERY LOUD INDEED!!!
Haha love it !
Minerva MacGonagall and Alfred (Batman)?
Michael kaine..
Maravilhoso

Neil Simon at his bitchiest!!! Love it!!!!!
Limo comments funny, Smith's friend, peer & co-star Dame Diana Rigg arrived in L.A. in a limo, when the show was canceled after a season they sent her to the airport in a station wagon.
This gives me Victoria/Victoria vibes 😄
her house is neither brick nor red.
Maggie Smith wore the same dress on Murder By Dearh.
Oh, that’s tacky…LOL

Did anyone notice that Michael Caine is reading telegrams? Did telegrams still exist then?
Last telegraph sent July 14th 2013.
Yes
Lol yes they did
This is a pretty old movie - 41 years old, to be precise, released 1978.
Yes, I know someone who sent one in 1989.
Lord redbrick and lady blueberry on this movie
Do you know where I can find the full movie online?
Amazon.
What a toxic pair. Let me out of here! Hard to watch two people needing to talk to each other but throwing verbal darts instead. Very sad.
Too many US references for a just off the plane English couple. Steel belted what? These roles should be played by Yanks, the dialogue is too American.
I'm American and I had to look that one up myself.

Agree, she wouldn't say "can" either, probably Loo or toilet. Still love this scene though.
@@richardlionheart3965 Or "Goddamn' as well. It sounds so phoney. Although this is a minor consideration as the script and performances are fantastic.
Well it was written by an American - the late, great Neil Simon, who penned many classic American comedies including 'The Odd Couple' and 'Barefoot in the Park'.
Love Maggie Smith, but this was just horrid acting from both.
It’s called comic acting and they were both brilliant.
Fuck you
She won an Oscar for this
What an idiot
and yet she won an oscar
