I've said this to other UA-camr's and you are no exception. The time and dedication you put into video and editing amazes me. I love your channel it's always a fun ride when I watch one. Thanks so much.
These trip videos just keep giving. I really appreciate your sharing with us. I wish I lived closer to those wilderness lakes. You Canadians are blessed.
Your videos and others like it do more than you can imagine. I have one year clean and sober today. I also have arthritis because of some poor decisions as a younger man. I have taken the money I would have wasted and fully dived into these types of trips. There is nothing I have come across that compares to misty mornings in a canoe first thing either. I have seen and done some things….nothing comes close. You are truly an inspiration. Thank you.
TY for making these videos it brings back many memories from when I was younger.... if i ever get back into shape I would love to do a trip with my oldest son.... ty again......
I hope you're finding ways to manage the arthritis and feel better. I really enjoy your films and was quite happy to find tonight you'd posted a new one. They're a treat to watch. Thanks.
+Greg Greaves Thanks Greg, I believe what I have (or had) was either a viral or bacterial infection but I seem to be getting better slowly. Whatever it is has left some lingering issues, or is still affecting be somewhat.
Another one, yaaaaay!! Funny how adverse weather and pain and equipment problems and a thousand little things can conspire to tangle up the joy and peace of a wilderness trip. It sometimes takes so long to clear ones mind and find that natural rhythm and listen to the quiet. Your videos are often of solace to me when I'm sunk in the middle of the sea of modern life, when an escape isn't available and all I can hear is the noise. So a big thank you for sharing; know that it means a lot, I suspect to a great number of canoe-heads. Hope your ills clear up and you can find that peace and joy again. Hope that you'll share when you do as well. Thanks again, Be well, Ben S.
+Ben Sieber Thanks Ben, nice to hear from you again. I have another short film in the works from spring of 2014 / French River trip and should have it out in a month or two. I am hoping to get out on a trip or two this year but really need to play it by ear. I'm better but not 100%.
+Ben Sieber Sorry Ben, its strung up in the garage a bit out of the way. It's 14ft in length. It wanders a bit but that is a blessing in the narrow stuff. When I get it down this spring, I'll take some actual measurements. Its the "Puddle Duck" design by Gil Gilpatrick.
+Tumblehome Thanks Jason; don't trouble over the details. Just looked into the Puddle Duck, looks to be just the kind of boat I love to paddle. I tried to like those long, flat-keeled cruisers but they just feel dull to me. I like a canoe that dances under the paddle, that I can spin at will, that bobs and slides in the bouncy stuff instead of arrowing through, if you know what I mean. I've a preference for a shallow vee hull myself, a-la Mad River, and hope to build a stripper copy of my heavy-as-a-tank plastic Explorer 14 this summer (or perhaps a copy of my fiberglass Malecite). Once again, be well and thanks!
Outstanding video. I too have had the pleasure of staying on McIntosh with the whole lake to ourselves. I hope to make this trip again this summer with my son (14). Thanks for taking the time to make this.
Beautiful editing. I especially liked the transition from milky way to fog blanketed hillside. I think perhaps I was in the park around the same time period in Sept of 2014, perhaps a little earlier than you, on a 10 day trip. It rained (and poured) some 8 days of that trip. The portage trails, lakes, and bays were so swollen. Which makes me think of your hands and joints. I hope you have healed and were able to get out again this season. I, like you, live vicariously through the winter months, watching these videos. I just came upon yours. Thank you for taking us along.
Absolutely fantastic filming and narration. Being new to this type of adventure it is really great to see how you do things and approach the challenges you run into. I particularly love your night sky shots, and the chipmunk is great footage. Thanks for putting this and your other movies together. Hoping the best for a full and speedy recovery.
+TheFleetcaptain210 Thank you. That chipmunk was a ham! (just like the owl) At the base of the tree there were loads of the pinecone leftovers so I figured he used that spot on a regular basis. I just set up the cam on a tripod and waited. He showed up in about 2 mins. I had never really seem them dismantle a pine cone like that before.

Outstanding production values on this trip!! Nice that you set up some shots. Equally outstanding cinematography. I like your choice of aspect ratio. Truly a joy to watch.
I know the beautiful scenery helps , but your photography & film making captures it so amazingly I feel I am there, in the moment paddling along side. Having a beautiful canoe only adds to the escapism. Keep up the good work. Hi from a fellow paddler from the UK
Great video, great audio (pin hole mic did the trick), great music, great writing and voice overs, great graphics, and great location. Had a good time watching; especially enjoyed all the wildlife. Thanks!
Glad I checked to see if you'd put out any more videos "just in case" ... what a gift in the weeks just before ice out! Subbed again to make sure I don't miss anything you care to share this year.
Amazing job as usual Jason! Your shots and editing are a fine art. I truly enjoy and submerse myself into the moment when I watch your art. I wish you well and a full recovery.
Absolutely amazing. They way you portray the purity, beauty and solitude of Algonquin is comparable to the likes of Tom Thompson himself. Thank you for taking me on this journey with you.
Thanks man. I would never claim to have the artistic skills of TT but I certainly enjoy his works and share his love for the sheer beauty in the Parks!
Hi, I just found your channel, your format is great! Just what one needs in these cold months of February, reminiscing on trips past, and the prospect of those in the future. Algonquin is truly a magical place, you know that, and you capture it very well. Thank you, hope to see more vids in the future.
Loved it. Sorry to hear about the hands, and knee. Hope they stay on the mend. How exited were you to capture the Owl?, that is not an easy thing to do. Fantastic job all the way around, thank you very much.
+JoeRobinetBushcraft Thanks. The owl was a really freaky experience. Initially it swooped in over my head (came from behind) and scared the crap out of me! I nearly jumped out of my skin with such a big but silent moving thing appearing out of nowhere on what such a quiet night. It must have been pretty used to trippers. It perched itself not 10ft away in that tree while I messed around, putting a fresh battery in the cam and changing lenses etc. I'm sure it was looking for the inevitable mice that come out at night around the site.
Hey Jason, what a great video. First-rate job capturing the serenity and beauty of the place. Hope you are healing up and ready to trip again. Thanks for bringing us along.
Love the way you captured the clearly evident love you have for Algonquin. Keep it up! Looking forward to your next series. Thanks so much for sharing.
Jason, Agreed with everyone else - EXCELLENT video, thanks for putting the time into it for us. My buddy and I (all the way from England) are doing the exact same loop this spring and absolutely cannot wait to get there!!! This is going to be our first trip to Canada and we've decided Algonquin has to be the first place. Our outfitters have recommended that loop for us, so we're doing it :) Hope our trip will be as good as yours was, with the addition of a few trout in the bag to.
+john davis Enjoy the park! Be safe with those spring temp waters. I'm hoping to be up there next weekend but the park has pushed opening until the 28th. I'm hoping the warm week changes things and they let us in on the 22nd.
absolutely fantastic Jason a real pleasure to see you and the Caroline Jane back on the water and hopefully 2016 will be a great year for you canoe tripping. I sincerely hope that your arthritis doesn't cause to much trouble and prevent you from doing what you clearly love. Take care and all the best. Danny
+journeyintobushcraft Thanks Danny. So far, things seem to be on track as far as me getting better. I'm not 100% but am a lot better than I was 8 mos ago.. my symptom list grew far beyond the inflammation etc. The Docs have pretty well ruled out arthritis of any kind and I believe that I had (or have) some sort of viral or bacterial infection. I won't bore you with the details but I've seen about 25 doctors over the past year and have essentially had to become my own health advocate. I'm taking it easy and taking steps to boost the immune system and it seems to be working... or whatever it is has run it's course!? Fingers crossed.
Thanks for these video shares... Currently home, recovering from a stroke four days after winter camping. Optimistically prepping for the next adventure. Totally relate to the longing.
Amazing video. You told a great story. I am taking off this week to do this loop solo. It too will be my longest and most challenging solo trip. Watching this has really made me set aside some self-doubts and embrace the fact that I am in for an incredible journey.
Was so happy to see your new videos. Always enjoy the beautiful, breathtaking scenery and your dialogue. Hoping your arthritis is getting more manageable. Take care.
I’m almost 78 years old now and have some health issues. But I’m still paddle around fishing. But not the way I did like 200 mile trips north of Superior when I was much younger. Keep on truckin Pal. Cheers 👍🇨🇦
another great vid! i'm pretty jazzed because i did my first 7-day solo just a month ago. magnetawan to big trout and back via stag/devine/ranger lakes. I was VERY lucky with the weather and pretty well everything that week. can't wait to get out again for a long trip. these vids are awesome in the meantime, though. thanks!
Hey Jason, Just stumbled upon your channel a few days ago. Your videos are amazing and help to hold me over till the next time I can get out tripping. Hopefully you're doing better these days and maybe even out in the canoe at this very moment. (Selfishly I hope you are out and recording so we can enjoy more of these great videos) God bless, my friend! Troy
Thank you Troy, I made it out for a short trip in the spring and should be heading out early september with the kids and a buddy... hopefully some little films to be made out of those trips!
+Mike Morton If you get the chance, do the hike to The Crack! Here are some shots I took there a while back... Just looking at them has me thinking about heading back there. www.pbase.com/jaydog/temp_in_box
Hey man really hope your feeling better! I appreciate the way you take time to film the portages for us that's awesome, thank you ! Beauty trip too, do you think looping it around the other way might make it easier ?
Thanks Victor! I am better now... was not tripping for a season or two while I was on the mend there. That loop is probably the same challenge either way depending on wind. Some of those narrow areas midway through would be tougher going against the current... But Big Trout would have been easier in the other direction for sure! It would be nice to get that big portage out of the way early in the trip as well.
Beautiful video, and nice editing. :) Sorry about your hands. Hope you will have a fast recovering, and be out soon, making videos. I will be looking forward.
Fantastic clips! just made my nervousness for my first solo ever in 3 weeks time go down alot! hope to see you on the water this year, hands looked really swollen
Yeah! Dont sweat it. Prepare and enjoy! My hands and overall health have improved. I made it out on a spring trip and hopefully will be out this fall too.
+Joshua Montague Thank you Joshua. I have another film in the works from a trip to the French River... should have it out before the summer. It took me a year to edit Big Trout... waaaaay too long but I had a lot on my plate with family and health etc.
awesome work! video and photos are outstanding. I can't imagine the effort required to get these shots. Awesome job sir. thank you on behalf of the Internet, wishing u a speedy recovery
Mr @JoeRobinetBushcraft sent me here to check out your vids. Glad he did am enjoying them. Hope your recovery is coming along nicely and you've gotten an answer to what was causing your grief. Keep up the good work, that Algonquin (did I spell that right?) park looks like a beautiful place - completely different to what I'm used to here in Australia.
hmmm... JoeRobinetBushcraft... rings a bell :-) I had some brief correspondence with Joe a long ways back when he had about 5k subs... I gave him a few pointers about his vids etc and now he has a billion subs so it must have been all me :) Pretty cool what he's made of his passion for bushcraft etc. If you ever do end up in Ontario, do try to visit some of the big parks! As for my illness, it has slowly subsided and I'm pretty well back to normal (for now... whatever normal is) I don't know what it is or was but pretty sure it was viral or bacterial. Fingers crossed that is out of my system.
I realize I'm echoing previous comments, but what an absolutely fantastic film :) Stunning photography and footage that captured a challenging, beautiful journey. I was hoping to attempt this same loop this year - I was out-voted due to the length/portage .. I'll work the team up to it for 2017 ;-) Your footage is incredible - how do you capture the night time astronomy shots? Agreed, the owl was so cool! Thank you for sharing
+Diana Lauren Thank you. Go for it! I was a bit worried about the long portage but it wasn't as bad as I had built it up to be. The night time shots are done on a DSLR... 30 second exposures at a bit higher ISO. Check out the low light capabilities of the new Sony A7 series cameras... totally crazy... you can even shoot video at night with no lights.
Amazing videos, my back hurt watching you do the big portage. I did that my first day at the end of the day, not a good idea. Tried to do it in a single carry... after 100m I gave up on that idea.
Thanks. I'm not sure if I'm answering this twice... last answer disappeared I had built up the portage in my mind something terrible but it ended up not being to bad in the end... can't imagine doing it in a single run!
Awesome! Was it arthritis that was the issue? I have to take meloxicam daily and stay away from inflammatory foods like peanuts. Great trip! Thanks for bringing us along!
I'm not sure what it was. I got really sick afterwards for about a year and a half? Lyme Disease? I address it in my next video coming out... it was 2016 / first trip back after being sick. I just never got around to editing it until now.
@@JasonIrwinTumblehome Sorry about that. I have heard that stuff is really bad news and takes forever to get over. I'm sorry that I am thinking so "now" when I comment. I'm new to your awesome channel and I so get into the videos.
Hi JasonHope you've recovered now. Love the work. Just a question but were you ever in the military? I only ask because some of your terminology has that background.
Thanks Bob, glad you're enjoying the films. Yes I was in the Canadian Navy for 3 years. I trained out West and then posted / sailed out of Halifax on the HMCS Fraser and a couple of other ships... seems like a lifetime ago. I'd be retired if I had stayed in :-(
+CanadianBushman I actually can't remember the days but it was late September. No bug issues on that trip except spiders taking refuge in the packs and boat!

+Tumblehome Hi Jason,
Just curious, what are the basic dimensions of the Carolyn Jane, if you don't mind sharing.

Sorry Ben, its strung up in the garage a bit out of the way.
It's 14ft in length. It wanders a bit but that is a blessing in the narrow stuff.
When I get it down this spring, I'll take some actual measurements.
Its the "Puddle Duck" design by Gil Gilpatrick.

+DonVonGun
Thanks a bunch.
I'm planning a spring trip with a buddy but I need to take it slow... still on the mend (I hope)
Fantastic series, great job, take care bro.
+jwrappuhn71
Thank you!
real nice 2 part triip - glad ur feelin better - stay the course - take care
Thanks for the video Jason. I hope your health improves and I see you on the water (or on some portage!) in 2016.
+Larry Hyett
Yes, me too!
It has been a hell of a year and having not been in a canoe for a year and a half is killing me.
Great videos. What lens are you using on that Canon?
+Shawn James (My Self Reliance)
I have the kit 24-105 but mostly its the 16-35 on there.
Little did I know that when you were asking questions 3 yrs ago, it was all part of your plan to take over the world! ;-)
Thank you for sharing your journey.
+Lucas Van Landschoot
thank you Lucas
Get well soon! Would love to see more!
+Joshua Montague
Thank you Joshua. I have another film in the works from a trip to the French River... should have it out before the summer. It took me a year to edit Big Trout... waaaaay too long but I had a lot on my plate with family and health etc.
Looking forward to it! Keep up the good work!
awesome work! video and photos are outstanding. I can't imagine the effort required to get these shots. Awesome job sir. thank you on behalf of the Internet, wishing u a speedy recovery
+John Le
Thank you kindly... going to go for an easy spring trip and see how she goes.

When you retire move up around the park you will love it . That’s where you seem to be happy happy 😃. 🇨🇦👍
Mr @JoeRobinetBushcraft sent me here to check out your vids. Glad he did am enjoying them. Hope your recovery is coming along nicely and you've gotten an answer to what was causing your grief. Keep up the good work, that Algonquin (did I spell that right?) park looks like a beautiful place - completely different to what I'm used to here in Australia.
hmmm... JoeRobinetBushcraft... rings a bell :-)
I had some brief correspondence with Joe a long ways back when he had about 5k subs...
Absolutely stunning
Thanks a lot!
Jason does an excellent job, as do you.
great vids. thanks for sharing.
+Occ Canuck
NP! I should have another vid out in the near future.
+Diana Lauren
Thank you.
Jason, beautiful work. would you tell me what editing software you use?
Currently using Premiere Pro!
Amazing videos, my back hurt watching you do the big portage. I did that my first day at the end of the day, not a good idea. Tried to do it in a single carry... after 100m I gave up on that idea.
Thanks. I'm not sure if I'm answering this twice... last answer disappeared
I had built up the portage in my mind something terrible but it ended up not being to bad in the end... can't imagine doing it in a single run!
Great job, very well done.
+Christopher Marshall
Thanks Christopher.
@@inthewoodswithbigfoot3941 no problem at all... still not sure I had Lyme but I had something ! Hopefully its gone for good.
@@JasonIrwinTumblehome Well I am now looking forward to seeing the return trip now even more....
I'd be retired if I had stayed in :-(
Ahhh. That makes sense. Anyway, truly looking forward to your next video. I watch them when I need to relax
What were the dates of your trip? No bugs? Amazing trip, thanks for the video.
+CanadianBushman
I actually can't remember the days but it was late September.
No bug issues on that trip except spiders taking refuge in the packs and boat!
I hope you're able to get back on the water.
Yes sir. Back for a while now. I seem to have shaken whatever it was but it took a while.
WOW WOW WOW Thank you so beautyful!!!
awesome videos, thanks for sharing - hope you got out in 2016 and will be out for 2017
Thanks and Yes on the mend now... more trips in the future for sure. I'm even back on a motorcycle again!
amazing video footage! cheers jimmywaynelake channel
Thanks!
