Small note, if you want to retain the battery lifespan over the years keep in mind that, leaving any lithium ion batteries at 0% or 100% battery slowly damages them/they age quicker. So while not using devices like phones and Android vr headsets, keep it as close to a 50% charge as you can.
It depends on the manufacturer's strategy though. Because 0% and 100% battery charge are arbitrarily chosen by the manufacturer. The manufacturer can just say "20% is my 0%" and "80% is my 100%" just by rescaling things and thus making the battery lifetime longer, by just limiting the maximum and minimum allowed charge. Not sure what Oculus' / Meta's strategy on this is.

I think the only time my iPhone gets restarted is when there is a new update the requires it to do that. Same for the MacBook laptops used by my family. I haven't rebooted or turned off my Oculus Quest 2 since I got it when it first released Oct 13, 2020 except as part of any updates. All of these remain good as new and stable in my experience without requiring routine restarts / reboots. My PC on the other hand gets rebooted / powered down routinely because this is the way to keep it stable.
I turn mine off and unplug the elite strap battery or they both drain pretty quickly. The quest stays charged when it's off, but the strap battery has started to lose a little charge even when unplugged.
I have a problem with my oculus that I don't know how to fix when Im using it it randomly turns of sometimes when it randomly turns off it won't turn back on so I have to power it off over and over again until it starts working
When you completely power down a device, then start it up, it's the same as doing a restart. You are power-cycling the device either way, one is just immediate and the other there is a lag between powering off and powering on. The only benefit to leaving a device in standby and waking it up is due to all devices being rated for how many times they can be power cycled in their lifetime (don't believe me? read the specifications). resets are less taxing on devices then a full shutdown/power up cycle. they are also rated, however, on how long they are powered and active as well. I have a PC upstairs that is on 24/7, but the one in my office is only on when I'm working. I've found using a PC intermittently as opposed to powered on 24/7 tends to give it more longevity in the long run; The same my hold true for the Quest: they haven't been around long enough to confirm this yet though. Time will tell.
Windows has a fast startup option that is automatically enabled that holds onto some of the system cache and ram in order to startup quicker. This happens when you shut it down. Restarting it completely clears it of everything. If you disable the fast start up, then shutting down will do the same thing youre describing.
Hey, I just got an Oculus and wondering if it is normal for the Quest 2 to take hoursss to download a file that's 0.92 GB? 🤔 ..and does it stop downloading if powered off? Any extra info would help, thanks.
Mine randomly quit in the middle of a game. Tried rebooting, factory reboot- nothing. Stuck in a loop that never gets past the black screen with the "O". It just acts like it's downloading and loops back. This is the quest 2
Windows have feature called something like fast startup or something simillar and this causes when you turn off you computer it will keep some files in that memory or deep sleep how you said. I recommend turning this off if you have fast enought pc because it won't be any different if it is turned on except you will have less issues.
Mine came up with a warning after taking it off charge that if said problem carried on that it would need factory reset, so I did as I was told & reset her, now all I have is the first screen with the black tab rubbish & the code? The problem is the app has connected, WiFi has connected but I'm still stuck on the code & tab screen & it won't go any further? So the app see's it, it see's the controller's? App wise it's all good, Oculus wise it's stuck on the code screen, the app auto connected so no use for said code? I've factory reset it on the app & on the Oculus! Help lol...
I just got mine today and when I click on my account or if I try to go to the store and it says "nothing to show here" and "something went wrong please try again later" :(
I have quest 2 with battery strap. Turn off my device after use. strap battery dies in 3 days and then itll continue to burn battery on the quest. This makes me think that when i turn off the quest it really doesnt turn off. Knowing facebook the quest is probably collecting data or something.
The reason I turn it off every time I use it is because of what you mentioned at the end. It takes less than a minute to start, and it's somewhat common for something to activate the proximity sensor, turn on the screen, and drain the battery.
I use the quest 2 almost every day for an hour but I turn it off fully every time I finish with it because it takes hardly any time to turn on, allows me to check the guardian and means it won't turn the display on when not in use. Also I store mine in a carry pack when not using it with a lens protector on so I need to turn it off fully. So as long as turning it off every time doesn't harm it in any way then I will keep doing that. I even turn my windows PC off fully after every day.
How do you reset the Quest 2 as opposed to powering it off? I typically power down the Quest 2 every time I am done playing. I do this by asking Facebook to Power Down the device.
I just restart my quest 2 if I got glitch or bug.. basically guardian or controller drifting or both . And I only turn it off If I want to keep it in a bag to carry.
Tech dude here, it is true computers/phones needs to restart or power or to clear ram if you down have a program or app to shut down tasks amd applications. but its not needed to Restart it. you can turn it of aswell. while i down know how the quest is programmed to function, the few files that helps a windows pc turn on faster stored in the ram are so small that it would not be a difference between restarting and powering of the device. the quest probally dont have any ram storage after turning it of. So just make sure to power it of or restart sometimes. Reboot once a week is not a rule. i would play until i find making a roomscale a little laggy. that is where i can feel the headset struggeling when ram is filled.
Usually I turn it off every time I do not use it. To not drain battery. And because it starts fast so why not turning it off ? Or I shouldn't ? Now that I think about it, my Xbox I have set it up for quick start means it does not turn off but go in idle mode. Should I do the same with quest ? Seems the quest 2 goes idle when I remove the headset. What about the controllers ? When do they turn off ? The Xbox controllers turn off when the Xbox turns stand bye. And the quest ?
The quest controllers turn off when the quest is in sleep mode, just like the Xbox. There is no fast startup option on quest, but it starts up pretty quick so there's no problem with turning it off everytime you use it. I just like having it on because it does literally no damage, and it is nice to always have it ready to go because of how frequently I use it.
So when he says restart does that mean pressing the power button to turn it of and then pressing again to turning it on or is it restarting when you turn it off and then on after about an hour or two?
Guardian messes up if leave it on so I always turn it off. By the time you get the adjustments right for the hand controllers it’s restarted anyway. Much quicker than the Q1. Also have been using Q1 charger which seems to take a while, anyone else do the same?
I'm new to this and I'm not a computer guy, so when you say "reboot" is that the same as "restarting"? That's different from " turning on and off again" ? If so, where would I "reboot" or "restart" on the oculus quest 2? When I googled " how to restart Oculus quest 2 " It's explaining a Factory reset from the Oculus quest app on my phone. I'm confused, and I don;t want to ruin my Oculus quest that I just got for christmas.
leaving it on will affect the battery, after recharging and using the battery it’s battery capacity will shorten. so having it turned on for long periods of time without it cooling down can limit the battery.
The manual recommends you not do this. Now I think it may mean attached to your wall adapter while playing, as they sell and official cable that is explicitly meant to charge while playing your device connected to a PC.
Here you go from google: Leaving the Quest Plugged In While Using The battery for the Quest is designed for heavy usage and can be used while it is charging, so you won't run into the conflict of having to sacrifice usage for charge time.
What if I go to work in the morning and then later in the afternoon I come back to play? Should I have it completely off so that way it doesn’t drain any battery
I use mine till the battery is nearly dead then turn it off to charge and as soon as its fully charged I unplug it but I always fully turn it off when finished playing
How do I restart I just turn it of every time I use It and I use it a lot And do you mean by just leaving it on that you press the of button and not holding it?
I charge it up, then I unplug the extra battery pack from the side, because it seems to constantly try and feed the main battery. If you just use the Quest 2 without any pack, I'd say it'll last longer. Just unplug it from the side, so there is no activity at all.
In this video, are you confusing sleeping the device with it shutting down. I have heard the exact opposite from LTT where they said that restarting a computer keeps some files to have it boot up faster while shutting it down clears everything in the RAM and cashe.
Whenever I stop using it I tend to just shut it down and plug it in. The startup time is like 10 seconds, its not that long of a wait. I will have to begin restarting my device weekly if the temp files are not deleted on shut down.
I turn mine off. Since for me I find the sensor that awakes it from sleep is rather sensitive and in my house it seems something or other is always awaking it and nothing worse than about to go into a vr session and only having 5% battery

Hey, I just got an Oculus and wondering if it is normal for the Quest 2 to take hoursss to download a file that's 0.92 GB? 🤔
..and does it stop downloading if powered off? Any extra info would help, thanks.
I have to reboot my Q2 once a day. Either the wifi dies and can't be started or the tracking does a wierd snapback after each move.
It takes less than a minute to start, and it's somewhat common for something to activate the proximity sensor, turn on the screen, and drain the battery.
on the quest website it recommended i power it off every time to preserve the battery, how does that play in?
i have a oculus rift s and i unplug it everytime i wanna put it away thats no problem right? or should i leave it plugged in and in its case?
I only restart or fully power it off if it bugs, glitches, or dies, other than that just rest mode is ok, I check up on it so it doesnt die
I only have mine on when using and I recharge before using it. I haven't had any issues
Ok so how do I actually reboot it and how do I actually just turn it off? What's the difference as far what do you do differently for each one
How would you reboot it other than turning it off and on? Is there a reboot or restart option?
How do you reset the Quest 2 as opposed to powering it off?
I typically power down the Quest 2 every time I am done playing. I do this by asking Facebook to Power Down the device.
I prolly restart my q2 once a week but my phone only like... Prolly in september so like 3 months ago
I just restart my quest 2 if I got glitch or bug.. basically guardian or controller drifting or both . And I only turn it off If I want to keep it in a bag to carry.
I don't even have a quest or quest 2 but I watch a lot of these just to learn something. Thanks for the great content!
For computers not clearing the cache on power down and power up you need to turn off Fast Boot in the BIOS.
I already knew this but I watched the whole thing start to finish, it's nice hearing you explain it.
I have never left it on I always turn it off after I played
Thx for the help but I so far have only shut my quest down cause I do t wanna damage it because I’ve used it like everyday
This man deserves 100k subs
So when he says restart does that mean pressing the power button to turn it of and then pressing again to turning it on or is it restarting when you turn it off and then on after about an hour or two?
does the quest have like a sleep wake option like phones or does it just sit there with the screen burning and fully active
If you put it down and leave it it should go into sleep mode but as soon as you pick it up it will detect movement and turn back on
Guardian messes up if leave it on so I always turn it off.
Restarting is the same as a reboot. Look at the pinned comment for how to restart.
leaving it on will affect the battery, after recharging and using the battery it’s battery capacity will shorten. so having it turned on for long periods of time without it cooling down can limit the battery.
What about using the quest while its charging? 🤔
The manual recommends you not do this. Now I think it may mean attached to your wall adapter while playing, as they sell and official cable that is explicitly meant to charge while playing your device connected to a PC.
Here you go from google: Leaving the Quest Plugged In While Using
The battery for the Quest is designed for heavy usage and can be used while it is charging, so you won't run into the conflict of having to sacrifice usage for charge time.
I have to turn it off and back on sometimes. Sometimes it going into a loading loop sometimes and never come back after going to sleep.
I confused, what’s the difference between fully shutting the quest off (holding power button and shutting down) and rebooting?
Not much of a difference. As long as you do one or the other once a week, you're good.
What if I go to work in the morning and then later in the afternoon I come back to play? Should I have it completely off so that way it doesn’t drain any battery
I use mine till the battery is nearly dead then turn it off to charge and as soon as its fully charged I unplug it but I always fully turn it off when finished playing
How do I restart I just turn it of every time I use It and I use it a lot
And do you mean by just leaving it on that you press the of button and not holding it?
When I’m charging it should I power if off completly
wow alot of channel growth im happy for you man!
the past 2 days its been like going to a blank screen and nothing will show so i have to turn it on and off and idk what to do
I charge it up, then I unplug the extra battery pack from the side, because it seems to constantly try and feed the main battery.
Nope. Windows 10 has a fast startup feature that they recently added. I think that LTT video is fairly old, but im not sure.
@@VirtualPandaVR Ok that makes sense, I always have fastboot off on my desktop computer because otherwise I am unable to easily access the Bios.
Whenever I stop using it I tend to just shut it down and plug it in. The startup time is like 10 seconds, its not that long of a wait. I will have to begin restarting my device weekly if the temp files are not deleted on shut down.
Great video man, your channel has a lot of potential. Great advice as well.
What about putting on charge after every use?
After every use, even if it's 30 minutes, I put it on charge, is there any problem with that?
Is it possible to overcharge the Quest 2?
No (this might be a good topic for another video). Any damage from overcharging is miniscule, and not worth worrying about in modern devices.
I turn mine off. Since for me I find the sensor that awakes it from sleep is rather sensitive and in my house it seems something or other is always awaking it and nothing worse than about to go into a vr session and only having 5% battery
I used to turn it off every time everyday which might’ve been the reason for my boot loop so thanks for this info.
What do you mean bootleoop I think I might be having the same problem
How do you make sure the screen isn’t turning on?
Back when I first got it, it just turned it off ( leaving it on, but not really ) now I restart it every time I’m done
Will leaving it on stand by still use internet?
This was very helpful thank you
Loved how short and sweet it was. Thanks for the tips
I restart every time only why I found too exit a game, usually leave the game because I can't get too the parts outside the guardian!!
Great video!
Okay so, i didnt know i have to restart once a week and i play it ALOT heh and everytime i set my guardian it turns off, how do i fix this?
