This is still one of my favorite Dire Straits tunes. It fits well with the name of the band. It might be one of the quirkiest songs that they released.

Same here, I only hear it once every maybe 6 years now, but every time it makes me smile. Have to play it loud. This was really my first record for Dire Straits I encountered, it was my eldest brother's record, and this tract was the one that interested me most as an 8 / 9 year old. It has a great lyrical flow, and is fun to sing along to. I had no idea what it was about, but now it is profound. I only found out recently that the last spoken line at the end is "I'm off! I'm sick!"

This is a social commentary and if you listen to it again you may get all the social references. .....

Mark Knopfler wrote one other song for this album that was never released as a Dire Straits song but ended up being recorded by Tina Turner: Private Dancer. All of Dire Straits play on the Tina Turner Version only Jeff Beck does the lead guitar solo instead of Mark.

The reason some Dire Straits songs have "that 80's sound" is because they helped establish the "80's sound". Simple cause and effect being lost over time, it happens a lot in all aspects of life. Regardless, Knopfler remains one of the greats.

While lyrically quite interesting, I think it is a little bit out of place on this album. I agree it has more of a classic 80's sound than the other tracks which were more experimental and complex. But maybe that was the point with the context of the song.

If you look at the first three songs on Making Movies and the first three songs on Brothers In Arms they were all released as singles. The difference is, Making Movies songs are the bands sound and the Brothers songs are more the 80s sound. As far as starting an album with three singles, Making Movies is a better album than Brothers imo. Their first album was totally their own thing, I don't hear Industrial Disease fitting on that album. Skateaway has pop lyrics but that song is not to be dismissed, musically and vocally the song is this mid tempo masterpiece with a sleepy mid tempo Blues guitar, it's hard to say which instrument is the best in that song because it's all so good, I often think the drums and percussion might be the shining star in that song.

I agree. My favourite albums as a whole are Debut, Communique and On Every Street. Those are the ones I tend to listen to all the way through. Also think the songs on side A of both this album and Making Movies are fantastic.

My favorite album from Mark knopfler of Dire Straits is his solo album called Down The Road Wherever from 2018. With him from Dire Straits is keyboardist Guy Fletcher. There are quite a few Straits sounding songs on it but the whole album is brilliant. Cheers from Australia. Loving your channel 🎸🎸🎸

@@bennettl23 The title track on Brothers in Arms is by far their best song on that album and it sounds totally out of place because it sounds more like their first and second albums.

@@MinistryOfDarkness11 Hard for me to choose a favourite album from Mark's catalogue. I like many of the songs from Golden Heart and every album that came after it all the way up to his recent One Deep River. Sailing to Philadelphia is special to me because its the first of his solo albums I heard.

@@bennettl23 Yes, well it took me a long time to think about what my favourite album is. They're all incredible with a special mention to Privateering. Cheers.

    Fun song, enjoyable but forgettable.
I think you should be happier with what's coming next.
I wish you to do Communiqué after this one.

They had to come up with an 80s sounding single on this album and Industrial Disease is it. Too bad great lyrics and vocals were wasted on this music. It's closer to side A of Brothers In Arms sound. I wonder if the music here is a middle finger to the record label for making the band write an 80s sounding hit, and the band went totally overboard with it 😂.
