I love this song and it's very deep. Even the video has meaning. His walk is a representation of the path of life, the people he encounters are the people and events that we encounter through our lives. The guy with the fridge on a dolly is like a big life altering event that was narrowly avoided. The people he bumped into are the little speed bumps that help shape our lives. The girl in the car is a bad relationship, the car is the large event that he was able to cross and move on from but she didn't move on as easily and followed representing how a love can effect your life long term even after it's ended. The lady he knocked down was like an encounter where he hurt someone else's life in some way and he was recognizing that but still life continues without looking back. The girl that checked him out was like a perfect fling that came and went and left only a fond memory. The car that actually made him pause was a major life event that held him in place for a while, maybe good maybe bad but significant enough to make his life take pause and him looking at his reflection in it's window's was representing him taking that moment of pause to reflect on himself a bit but in the end it too did pass and life continued as always. At the end when the other four followed with him is like the people in your life who are there for the long haul whoever they may be they stick with you till the end while still living their lives respectively.
Urban Hymns is one of my favourite albums. That street in Hoxton looks exactly the same now as it did then. The girl who gets out of the car is Ashcroft's wife.
Watch out! This music will change you!
Apparently, the girl in the car is actually his real life wife
I love this song. Always tried to find meaning in the video. Ty for sharing brother.
Well said
Reminds me of Cruel Intentions every time I hear this. ❤
One of my favorite final songs of a movie. Such a great scene
Same…
Movie had a great soundtrack.
Takes me back to being a 15 year old ❤
"Dr King is my Favorite" !!!! LOL
Iconic 🖤
The Urban Hymns album where this song was on is brilliant!
I love Urban Hymns.
Very good album 👌🏻
The video did this song a lot of justice. Cool reaction.
Bittersweet Symphony is my favourite song of all time by far!!! I’ve listened to it a million times & every time I do I feel something different. The magic of music. Richard Ashcroft is a genius who wrote one of the greatest songs I’ve ever heard. And it will forever be timeless. 🙌
Also Cruel Intentions is a banger movie & the song is used perfectly in it.
Same, million times never sick of it.Reminds me of myself at the time. I always get emotional with this song.
Excellent Band !! Richard Ashcroft is freaking Genius !!!
His solo work is killer.
One of my all time favorites. The violin!
On the soundtrack for "Cruel Intentions", used at the end of the movie.
a masterpiece ! one of my all time favs. brings back memories of 90s England. amazing instrumental (a classic) and fantastic richard ashcroft vocals
Chris Martin from Coldplay has stated that their band was inspired by The Verve and Oasis and U2 to some extent.
Richard Ashcroft and Chris Martin are good mates as far as I know.
Coldplay doing Bittersweet with Richard at live8 is legendary!
After their first couple of albums, I don't hear much The Verve or Oasis influence in Coldplay. More like the more poppy side of U2.
Incredible song. 1B views on YT is a testament to that
It was used in the movie Cruel Intentions
this is a monumental song. It has only gotten more fruitful and ellegant as the year have gone by. Its one of those songs that I will always keep deep in my heart
The juxtaposition of his unwavering strut and symphonic sound and real life going on around him are quite "magical" and captivating.
Considered by many to be one of the best written songs.
Richard Ashcroft had great success in U.K and Europe with The Verve. This was a massive hit in late 90s, and was also used in the closing scenes from the cult 1999 film Cruel Intentions starring Sarah Michelle Gellar and Reese Witherspoon.
Man the end is the ultimate get back!
Great movie.👍
I was 17 when this song came out and my dad had just died a little over a year earlier. I was very much living a bittersweet symphony. I have strong memories of where I was and what I was doing when this song was playing.
"Bitter Sweet Symphony" is based on a sample from a 1965 version of the Rolling Stones song "The Last Time" by the Andrew Oldham Orchestra. The Verve added strings, guitar, percussion and vocals. They obtained rights to use the "Last Time" sample from the copyright holder, Decca Records, but were denied permission from the Rolling Stones' former manager, Allen Klein. Following a lawsuit, the Verve relinquished all royalties and the Rolling Stones members Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were added to the song writing credits. In 2019, ten years after Klein's death, Jagger, Richards, and Klein's son ceded the rights to the Verve songwriter Richard Ashcroft.(Source :Wikipedia)
The hilarious thing is, it doesn't sound that different without the samples! It would most likely still have been a hit.
You can find the version without the samples on youtube.
I have that song on a playlist. It’s great.
Yes they got it all back and more
@@edwardmclaughlin719Nevermind. I hadn't seen that the Stones gave them all the royalties they surrendered to them back in the day. Still, they probably would've come in handy in the preceding 22 years.
Hilarious! It was far more than a "sample". Obviously a member of The Verve's Fanclub wrote that Wiki article as the facts are totally incorrect. .
"The Verve received permission from Decca, the record label that had released the orchestral album, to use a few notes of the string melody from the Andrew Oldham Orchestra instrumentals in exchange for half of The Verve's royalties on "Bitter Sweet Symphony."
But Allen Klein, who managed the Stones in the late 1960s and who controlled the band's song copyrights through 1970, sued The Verve for plagiarism shortly after "Bitter Sweet Symphony" was released, saying that the younger Brits had used far more of "The Last Time" than was mutually agreed upon and that The Verve's use was not just a small sample but infringed on the songwriter.
In late 1997, The Verve settled with Klein; the band gave Jagger and Richards songwriter credits on "Bitter Sweet Symphony" and gave its publishing royalties to ABKCO Records, Klein's company.
Oldham, meanwhile, separately sued The Verve in 1999 for about $1.7 million in mechanical - that is, songwriter - royalties. As a result of the two suits against The Verve, all royalty payments on "Bitter Sweet Symphony" went to Oldham, Jagger and Richards for many years. It's not clear how much money that represented in the years since The Verve hit it big, but in 2008, Oldham joked to British magazine Uncut that he had purchased "a pretty presentable watch strap" with his share of the song."
(NPR 23 May, 2019)
In other words - it was a huge rip-off of an existing piece of orchestral music and The Verve and Richard Ashcroft knew it and didn't even bother to fight the lawsuits.
I seen Richard Ashcroft live with Liam Gallagher from Oasis last year and they were outstanding . One of the best concerts ive been to in loooong time
Richard Ashcroft is top notch.
Richard Ashcroft is an amazing writer!
This song plays heavily in the movie Cruel Intentions which is worth watching if you havent seen it.
it was used in the classic "what comes around, goes around" scene from the movie "cruel intentions" staring sarah michelle gellar, ryan phillipe and reese witherspoon 😎
One of the soundtracks of my teenage years
The whole album that this track is on is ABSOLUTE FIRE!!!!
Pure Wordsmithing genius by Richard Ashcroft...
One of the best albums released by a British band in the 1990`s!
Used at a key moment in the film "Cruel Intentions",a modernisation of "Dangerous Liaisons"🎩
To me, it's a credit track piece. I hate the video, enjoyed the movie.
Also, a FAR inferior version of Dangerous Liaisons.
I am 68 years old and I have loved this song since it came out! There are a few songs that make me want to turn it up ---- this is one of them (another one is Radar Love, from way back in the day).
Always liked this song. It's the only song I know of from the Verve.
You need to cover , the drugs don’t work.
It’s a very emotional song, it brings me to tears every time I hear it.
Yes I'm here guys this is an absolute banger as Phil would say 😂 Yes the beginning was used here in Canada in a commercial ❤
The Orchestral hook was actually taken from a Rolling Stones song "The Last Time" performed by the Andrew Oldham Orchestra, I think they lost royalties from the song after they were sued for copyright infringement.....A great song and a good use of a sample though, it was a big hit in the UK. Enjoyed your reactions guys thanks!
Richard Ashcroft, didn’t get any money from the sales of his biggest hit, very recently The Stones actually gave Richard Ashcroft the full rights to the song and repaid all outstanding money
@@stevenclarke5606 Wow, I didn't know that, thanks for the info Steven!
Such an awesome song that never tires. Kick ass video too.
Richard Ashcroft’s song was supposed to have sampled the orchestral cover of “The Last Time.” Mick Jagger and Keith Richard’s have since returned the royalties to their rightful owner as they had nothing to do with the orchestral part of the song.
“The Drugs Don’t Work” is said to be about Richard’s dad who was dying of cancer.
The song “Everybody” is a great song from Richard Ashcroft’s solo career.
The people in the video represent obstacles in life and the singer unable to change his direction for the better. Great little song.
As I read your comment this entire song came together and made sense. I will never see this video the same way again. The metaphors, the symbolism. Thank you.
@@joannparker1977 You're welcome.✌️
You need to react to Ren's version of this!!
Loved this one the first time I heard it
A classic track🇸🇪
At it's height, this was also used in a series of Nike commercials featuring older people working out. One of them said, "I'm not strong for my age, I'm strong". Terrific ad campaign. This song was everywhere. The video was always on. Constant radio play. HUGE song of the latter 90's. I still play it and still love every second of it.
The band met in the early 90's at Winstanley College, Wigan
I saw him sing this live a few years ago. It was great but after the show was cool too. He stayed on stage and chatted with people. Very nice guy.
The Rolling Stones' record label allowed The Verve to use a sample of their song, but the Stones' manager then denied them permission - and so the Stones ended-up getting all the royalties from Bitter Sweet Symphony. When manager died Mick Jagger and Keith Richards gave the rights to The Verve.
Not like the Stones needed the cash in reality!
@stephenvalente3296 They got very little, it was the publishing rights the Verve got into trouble with and the Stones did not own them, it was the greedy ex manager who got himself a nice lump of money.
Anthemic...simply anthemic.......
I’ve followed Richard from his early days right through his solo career… amazing vocalist who I have seen perform live around 10 times… I’m seeing him again this summer ❤❤❤
It was on the soundtrack of the movie Cruel Intentions.
This song is played in the movie Cruel Intentions.
History is their masterpiece .
Sometimes he says I can change and sometimes he said I can't change.
Great, great Song!!!!
I bumped into that guy from The Verve the other day......
Probably, best 90's song! My favourite 90's song! I LOVE IT! GRETTINGS FROM SPAIN!
Love the post! I love this song, but the video was a slight rip off of Massive Attack's video for 'Unfinished Sympathy'. Keep 'em coming😁
The music video was shot in Hoxton, London.
The best song of the 90's + Classic Music Video!!
This songs brings back great memories, i was at university and having a great time , wish i could go back😢
liked it, would not skip over this one!!
The song existed a long time before any commercial usage. It's well over 20 years old and hard to imagine anyone not knowing this song.
You have to remember how young they are.
Love this song, this was taken from an old Rolling Stones song, and they had to give up most of their money!
Just the strings were sampled.
I love this song! I highly recommend that you watch the movie "Cruel Intentions." This song was in the movie at the end and it was PERFECT! "Cruel Intentions" is based a the book/movie "Dangerous Liaisons."
Beautiful x🌹
Love this one. That woman who got out the car was his wife apparently.
Ahhh I didn't know that.
I like that you 2 haven't heard this before.
The band is from my town, Wigan❤
I’ve always really liked this song. Especially when you’re in that don’t talk to me don’t look at me mood
Great song!!!
Do the live version at Glastonbury✌️🏴
You might recognise the song from the film cruel intentions it plays at the end
Ive loved this song before it was made popular by Cruel Intentions. Soundtrack of my youth ❤
Great Reaction Sam & Phil!
I enjoyed the movie
Cruel Intentions (1997)!
And this song was really fitting for the closing scenes! This was before
Sarah-Michelle Geller started her Buffy The Vampire Slayer series! If y’all saw Cruel Intentions that would be where you definitely would have heard it!🎻 🙏🏻
The movie Cruel Intentions closed with this song
I remember when this first came out and the hook grabbed you. The video also was unique and stood out at the time. I also remember hearing Space Hog: In The Meantime which also caught my attention. Oh I was 29 in 1997. Lol
Very deep song. Especially like how they used it in the film CRUEL INTENTIONS (1999). Can't recall any RS song in this. Speaking of true 'rip offs' , sample The Kinks' ALL DAY AND ALL OF THE NIGHT (1964) with The Doors' HELLO, I LOVE YOU (1968).
I discovered this song from the movie Cruel Intentions but ive loved it since then.
From a terrific album....
Life in a corporate capitalist society is all about making some money before you die.
Theres nothing depressing about the song. Its an acknowledgement of how the status quo is .....well unless your parents have lots of wealth
It's my ringtone
Mine too
Drugs don’t work is a brilliant song by the Verve, it’s about Richard the lead singers mum having cancer.
It was an epic scene of the movie Cruel Intentions
Wonderful song and video! Ren does a great retake of this and the Verve bass player sent him a bass guitar to show his approval! Cheers.
This Song is also great as a Hype Up song like say just before going/walking in for a job interview or heading over to Relationship Partners place to Breakup with Him or Her face to face
I'm walkin' here.
It was actually used in a Nike commercial
The Verve is 100% worth it
The drugs dont work
Sonnet
History
A thousand trees
Everyday i think of money
Oasis are another great British band from this era worth checking out. Their song "Champagne Supernova" has a really cool vibe like this one and "Supersonic" is another great song of theirs
This song makes the "bittersweet" ending of the movie Cruel Intentions very memorable.
The video was parodied very well in the Football (Soccer) anthem "Vindaloo" By Fat Les.
you should do Ren bittersweet symphony the guitar player for the verve like it so much he sent Ren one of his guitars
@bars Send a hug to Brazil
The blonde lady who gets out of the car to argue with Richard Ashcroft is his real life wife and fellow musician Kate Radley, formerly of the band Spiritualized.
It's a title track from a movie called cruel intentions
Great movie , with Sarah Michelle Geller
Ren did a cover of this ( which is really good worth a watch)The Verve gave it the thumbs and the bass player of The Verve sent Ren an electric guitar . What a way to show respect :)
On local radio they have an ongoing text in called 'did you meet someone famous' One girl texted in that she was on holiday in Cornwall and the lead singer of the Verve, Richard Ashcroft, was in the same cafe. She said she daren't ask for his autograph, because he looked so intimidating.
Used to be my local street market.
You might know it from TV Ads. Nike used it. You may have heard it via the Ads. Great stuff as usual from you folks. The Verve are friends with Oasis as well. I was at an Oasis show in NYC and the Verve walked in and the crowd went nuts! They were sitting in the Balcony and Noel told Richard he was a lightweight!! It was insane.
Sounds like U2
This Entire Album is a Gorgeous Time Capsule
The Verve was easily one of the best live bands of the 1990s.
Ashcroft made Clark Wallabees popular again because of this video. This song was not popular in the U.S. when released as well as Britpop in general. "Lucky Man" and "The Drugs Don't Work" are also excellent of this album.
Funny you mentioned Cold Play. They did this song live. Also, this song was used for a bit by Nike. I think they dropped it when the copy rights became an issue.
This was the "outro" to the modern version of Dangerous Laisons with Reece Witherspoon. 😊
Love is noise - the verve - Glastonbury 2008
