The whiteout and black marker tip is brilliant! I’ll be using that for certain in the future. Thank you as always for producing these videos. Happy Christmas to you and your family!
Have you tried the ultra smooth 3 wing bits from Woodowl? they make a nice clean hole as well. I havent tried the lipped brad point from Lee Valley, so I have no comparison.
Yep! Those bits are great. I use them for drilling dog holes in my benches. But I don’t think I’d use them for this job. - You don’t want to be chucking a bit with a lead screw into your drill press unless you file the threads off of it first. - And if you’re drilling by hand, the lead screw is pretty long. I’d be worried about it poking through the other side of the leg. - If you have chunkier legs or shallower mortises, it would probably be fine. Just be sure to take some measurements and do a little math before you start drilling.
I can sharpen them in the grinder if the wheel is properly shaped. Once I do that I have to go through the process of checking them against my wrench gauges again. It’s very hard to sharpen them as accurately as they were at the factory. In all honesty, I get so many chairs out of a bit, I don’t feel bad recycling it and buying a new one.

Thank you Michael! I think the white out idea came from Eric Cannizzarro. Or maybe he and Jeff Lefkowitz discovered it in parallel. Merry Christmas!

Have you shared these bits? If so, what did you use?
They’re the lipped brad points from Lee valley
@@thejointeffort have you sharpened them? If so, how?
