54:23 About this, not all of the dragons mentioned in the Book will make an appearance in the Main Trilogy, they have a whole line of dragons that they show in the TV Series side of things as Janci mentioned (though she forgot to mention the Netflix series after Riders and Defenders of Berk😅) and the dragons are categorized of the following: Stoker, Boulderr, Fear, Sharp, Tidal, Mystery and finally..... Strike Class , which is what Toothless is categorized as , known for precision, speed and accuracy❤🤟
The moment after “You’re not my son” where Stoic nearly faints after he realizes what he just said is possibly the greatest part of the movie to me. They could’ve easily had him be angry and seething but instead they showed how he knew what he said was wrong and was absolutely floored he even said it. Such a great way to have the short temper moment but also show us how much he truly cares about his son deep down
And such a believable moment too - because so many of us have experienced a version of that where we've done or said something in a moment of anger, immediately regretted it, but now the choice has been made and we feel like we've locked ourselves into the path, even if theoretically all it would take is to immediately change our minds again.
I think stoic in general, throughout the movies and series, is written as a very believable leader and father. They always do a great job of showing how both sides conflict, why he makes the choices he makes, and the weight of both wanting to be a good parent and having to fight for the survival of his people.
I have a 43 year old friend who lost a leg in a car accident and I invited him over the house to watch this movie with our wives and he started crying at the end and he said: "You know what really got me? The fact that Toothless also lost a part of his body and was able to accept help from Hiccup and later, Toothless stood by him when he lost his leg. Sharing disabilities made them stronger and now both support each other" Man I lost it 🥲
I love the fact that they have the main character (2 main characters including Toothless) who loses a limb. Not only because it goes against the cliche of heroes coming out of battle without serious injury, but also to have that representation without making it his entire personality. Yes he lost a leg but he doesn't let that hinder him
Even more, they each gave the other the disabilities. Toothless lost his tail flap when Hiccup shot him down, and Hiccup lost his leg when Toothless grabbed it to save him.
@@QahnaarinDovah And on top of that too, they now work better with the mechanism that runs off of said disabilities It's a perfect circle of a character arc
Fun fact. When hiccup and toothless interact with each other, that sudden hesitation and pull back from toothless when hiccup reached out, that was an animation glitch but they kept it in because it felt natural

@@JorgensZelda They also use many of the mannerisms from the recording sessions with the actors. Stoic's shoulder shrugs and Hiccup's hand gestures when he is saying that he "had to just kill it" during the first battle both came from there.
The flight of Hic and Toothless after losing the cheat sheet is simply a magical movie scene. The score fits so well when Hic and Toothless have fully synchronized and have finally formed a inseparable team.
And the look on Hiccup's face. You only see it for a few frames but he goes from scared to steely determination. So many little details like that all through the movie that you may not notice but pick up on just the same. Adds so much depth to the movie.

The music in the "first flight" scene makes is so incredible. It's one of the most well-executed integrations of visual and musical leitmotif in any movie. It makes me tear up with joy just thinking about it and I first saw this movie when it came out.
Fun fact the flying theme is actually just a merger of Hiccup's theme and Toothless' theme. And it makes sense the composer would work those together because the flying sequence is a culmination of their hard work and bond building. John Powell really did NOT have to go as hard as he did for these scores but he DID and the sound design coupled with the score is WHY animation should be respected as an art form.
I really hope you guys do two and three too. This is one of the greatest animated and movie trilogies of all time. You guys could also do the shows. They aren't really referenced in the movie and none of the character introduced in the shows show up in the movies but they are a lot of fun, especially the Race to the Edge series, which takes place closer to the start of the second movie, five years later.
And this also add up the history behind some gear he already have in the 2nd. As well as some relationship context between main characters( for example when Hiccup says "we have dealt with guys like this before" to Stoic you know exactly who he means after watching TV)
@@Mothobius I'm pretty sure he meant record a reaction to it since it only the first one was voted by patrons on their poll. They watch alot of stuff off screen as well
The scene where they show the missing leg and the parallel with Toothless has stuck with me since I watched this movie as a young lass, it was a really great theme to show children ❤
One of the few animated films that actually has me crying in certain scenes, especially the Forbidden Friends segment, the sound track is just stunning.
Spoiler for those who haven't seen this film yet: To clarify Janci is correct, Hiccup injured Toothless when he caught him with the net. Then Toothless tried to help Hiccup as he fell and his leg was the closest part of him that he could grasp onto. This film is fantastic for how it wasn't afraid to tackle the topic of disability acceptance. Originally they almost didn't keep the ending with Hiccup but the test audience said no keep it! Test audience you are the best. This film was phenomenal to begin with but it was escalated to a whole other level because of how it introduced a younger audience to injuries/ disabilities. Media tends to sometimes showcase disabilities in a negative light sadly, so I'm glad they reversed it for a younger audience. The fact that both of them caused each other's injuries makes it a much more powerful message. You can cause injuries to others with your actions through the words you say or through the actions you do, whether you intend to or not. However, what matters is how you address the situation afterward. They took accountability and both helped each other heal and accept the injuries that they each caused. Also, them tackling forgiveness and accountability when Toothless was with those around Hiccup and Toothless was powerful as well. Toothless finally started flying calming only after Astrid finally apologized. Then again at the end Toothless only showed them that he had caught Hiccup after Stoic apologized for how he had been acting. Once you finally took accountability for your actions and words, then they were finally rewarded. Also, when you were discussing the title: Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events came to mind for me. That's the series title but the books each have individual titles
the score at 26:08 is quite possibly the greatest musical moment in animated and possibly film history. this song known as "Test Drive" blends both Hiccups and Toothless' themes slowly during the sound that then crescendos into what we hear. Amazing work by John Powell
The best part of the score is when Hiccup and Toothless are training on flying and when they pull through the canyon they combine their themes into the triumphant over-arcing themes. I also adore the song they play in the end credits.
Watched this movie in the theaters when it came out. I was supposed to be doing something else, but had time to kill and picked it on a whim. When the scene where Hiccup freed Toothless played and the camera zoomed in his eye with that score I had chills, and knew I had stumbled onto something amazing. Left the movie and honestly cannot recall anything else I did that day.
I hope Blind Wave reacts to movies 2 and 3 as well as the canon TV shows. This franchise as a whole was one of the most enjoyable of my life and so it be great to see it get more appreciation!
No other theme brings me to emotional tears the way the theme that plays during their flight does. I can’t explain it. It just hits all the right emotional points for me. The soundtrack is very much underrated.
The order to watch this series in is: The first movie, the legend of the bonenapper (an extra little ep on the DVD) then the book of dragon (which is just telling about the dragons in the book in greater detail) Dragons: Gift of the Night Fury (a holiday Christmas special) Dreamworks Dragons (Season 1 & 2) Dragons: Dawn of the Dragon Racers Dragons: Race to the Edge (6 Seaons in Total and the most complete in terms of world building and setting up to the second movie) Second movie Third movie And finally, to cap it all off, How to Train your Dragon: Homecoming (Another holiday special to end on a good note)
0:26 Eric, I too am of the mindset that Powell's score for How to Train Your Dragon (and its two subsequent sequels) is not only of the highest quality for animation, but arguably some of the best in the cinema business. Glad to see a fellow film score connoisseur.
One of the greatest most underrated trilogies of all time. Just rewatched them all about a week ago for the 100th time and still cried my eyes out. The first one is great, but 2 and 3 are incredible and absolute tear-jerkers.
I wouldn’t call it underrated; HTTYD and Kung Fu Panda are considered the golden standard on how to do sequels, world building and villains for movies all audiences can enjoy. If wasn’t Pixar doing the heavy lifting in the 00s and 10s Disney wouldn’t be so dominant in western animation all these years.
I'm so excited to see y'all do this series! This is my favorite animated movie and my favorite animated trilogy of all time! And Eric is right--the score is AMAZING.
The soundtrack is amazing. Within seconds i could recognize it anywhere. I saw a a clip of someone turning the main theme into like wedding theme and now i want it it mine 😅
How to train your Dragon is one my favorite animated trilogies. Watching it as a kid the first one always has a soft spot in my heart. This is a perfect trilogy😀
Definitely agree with what you said first, the score is absolutely amazing from start to finish. It should have won the Oscar that year. Test Drive never fails to give me chills.

This literally just made my day. I am so happy you guys are reacting to these movies cuz they are absolutely amazing and slept on. Can't wait to see what you guys think of them!
I honestly love this entire series. They really do an amazing job with it. One of the things that I love is that they actually age the characters very well as time moves on. So, 10/10, I hope you guys continue with it. Oh, also, there's a really great video essay that talks about the "test flight" song, and how it is built around Toothless' musical motif and Hiccup's musical motif. It is "How to Train Your Dragon is a MASTERCLASS in Theme Writing" by Charles Cornell. I recommend it so much because, one, you guys really strongly appreciated the music in the movie, and two, it took my own enjoyment of the movie's music and kicked it up several orders of magnitude. It really shows how much attention to detail went into these movies, and it really is just beautiful to see.
Honestly you guys should watch the other two movies too. The first one is definitely the most nostalgic for me but I personally think the second and third ones are even better. Easily my favorite series from DreamWorks.
One of my favorite movies and the trilogy is definitely up there too as one of the best. It has a compelling story, great characters, masterful production, and I always get emotional no matter how many times I rewatch it; something that the movie industry is lacking these days. I wish I could watch this again in theatres, truly a once in a lifetime experience, especially when the music resonates at peak quality.
This is probably one of my favorite reactions you guys have done recently and it was so fun seeing Aaron and Calvin react to it for the first time! It would be awesome if you guys reacted to the rest of the movies too
Something you guys *almost* clued into, is that toothless is basically a cat. You even mentioned that he was going to pounce like a cat at one point. His pupils dialate like a cat's, and for the same reason in a cat, depending on their mood. And when he was rolling in the grass, that was catnip.
About the ending where all the dragons are everywhere in Berk and they’re all happily living together: because it didn’t really make sense for their whole society and culture to change so quickly, they soft retconed that in the Riders of Berk series. (One of the shows that takes place between the first and second movie) In the shows we see that some Vikings in the tribe still hate dragons, and for a very long time Hiccup, Astrid, and the other kids are the only Vikings who can ride dragons. We eventually get to see other characters train their own dragons, but it isn’t until the 3rd movie that there’s random unnamed background characters with their own dragons.
Already super excited for you guys to watch the next two movies. I don't think it can be stated enough just how powerful and impactful this movie was, especially to my generation (I'm 24) Love the reaction as always guys!
I loved your reactions, and I like how you all pay attention to details and how well built this movie is in terms of the Viking beliefs and the Vikings themselves, and how timeless the animations are. This series of films is my entire childhood, at the moment I am 19 years old and I remember waiting for the continuation for many years, I am glad that recently this series has been gaining many new viewers and I really hope that you will watch the next two films. The way the whole story completes and complements itself in each subsequent film is truly amazing. I honestly don't know any other series in which I would truly love each and every subsequent film so much. (also, English is not my first language so I apologize for any possible mistakes) THANK YOU FOR REACTING ❤
There are so many details you wouldn’t notice on a first watch. For example, when Astrid says sorry, toothless calms the flight. When stoic says sorry, toothless reveals hiccup is alive. When hiccup first discovers toothless he says “I did this” and when stoic thinks hiccup died, he says the same thing.
2:03 when I read the Inheritance Cycle, I pictured Eragon as a slightly altered version of Hiccup. It also took me a lot of mental energy to picture Saphira as the dragon on the first book’s cover instead of just Toothless.

Plus the shows introduce so many new and amazing dragons to the lore
And this also add up the history behind some gear he already have in the 2nd. As well as some relationship context between main characters( for example when Hiccup says "we have dealt with guys like this before" to Stoic you know exactly who he means after watching TV)
Who watches the first movie and not the others? It's common sense
@@Mothobius I'm pretty sure he meant record a reaction to it since it only the first one was voted by patrons on their poll. They watch alot of stuff off screen as well
@@Mothobius You never know. If this video doesn't generate the revenue, why would they continue the series when they lose money?
Test Drive will forever be one of the best film scores ever written. The raw serotonin brought in by it is insane. I cry every time.
The scene where they show the missing leg and the parallel with Toothless has stuck with me since I watched this movie as a young lass, it was a really great theme to show children ❤
The musical score to this trilogy is just 11/10
The Soundtrack of Powell in this Trilogy is SO GOOD, top tier animated movies soundtracks
John Powel really went up to Hanz Zimmers level with the soundtrack for this movie.
No, this score is beyond anything that Zimmer has ever written.
@@Julia-gc9ns well that is mostly true, except for in the case of kung Fu Panda.
@@Julia-gc9ns Zimmer has 'Prince of Egypt' and 'Lion King' so this is definitely not "beyond" those, but perhaps same level.
The moment of faith at the end of Test Flight always gives me chills.
I love that Toothless is just a scaly big cat lol its the best personality for a menacing yet goofy pet
Some of his movements were based off the animators cats
And his overall design is based off of a black panther on one of the animator’s desktop wallpaper iirc
One of the few animated films that actually has me crying in certain scenes, especially the Forbidden Friends segment, the sound track is just stunning.
I love Janci! she fits right in with the crew. also, please react to the rest of the trilogy; it's SO GOOD!!!
Spoiler for those who haven't seen this film yet:
To clarify Janci is correct, Hiccup injured Toothless when he caught him with the net.
Excellent breakdown and a series of unfortunate events is one if the best book series ever
the score at 26:08 is quite possibly the greatest musical moment in animated and possibly film history. this song known as "Test Drive" blends both Hiccups and Toothless' themes slowly during the sound that then crescendos into what we hear. Amazing work by John Powell
It was a delight to have Janci included. Hope to see more of her.
Eric is right, this is a perfect movie
Janci is cute and did well for her first reaction. Hope to see her in more of these 😎.
In the new channel Pokemality she is featured more, as well as aaron's wife.
Yeah she fit in very naturally among them, I'd be happy to see her in more reactions.
This is quite possibly a perfect movie. Solid story. Great voice acting. The soundtrack is fantastic. I love it.
I hope Blind Wave reacts to movies 2 and 3 as well as the canon TV shows. This franchise as a whole was one of the most enjoyable of my life and so it be great to see it get more appreciation!
It has now been over a year and still patiently waiting for them to react to the other 2 movies
Eric’s appreciation of the soundtrack 🥰
I greatly appreciate how the series' Dragons: Riders/Defenders of Berk and Race to the Edge cover most of the dragons from the book.
I always love the parallel between hiccup's "I did this" when he shoots toothless down and Stoick's "I did this" when he thinks hiccup is dead
No other theme brings me to emotional tears the way the theme that plays during their flight does. I can’t explain it. It just hits all the right emotional points for me. The soundtrack is very much underrated.
the bit where Hiccup loses the cheat sheet and they are flying between the cliffs always gives me chills, the music is awesome
Yeah where Hiccup just trusts his instincts and the pair of them basically become one entity and just fly. Fantastic sequence.
the score is Test Drive btw
Janci so good to have you please come back for more reactions!
I NEED YOUR REACTIONS TO THE OTHER MOVIES NOW
I loved having Janci at the table! Great thoughts and reaction. :)
I love seeing new faces at the table, Janci fits right in which is just awesome
God the music of this movie just hits my soul right!
One of the few franchises that are a "perfect trilogy" in my book. I'd love to see the reaction to the 2nd and 3rd movie
Dream works genuinely struck gold this movie. Even just watching this reaction I cried, got chill, gasped… and I’ve seen this at least 5 times lol
I GASPED when I saw this in my subscription feed because I LOVE THIS MOVIE SO MUCH! Loved the reaction!
The order to watch this series in is:
The first movie,
the legend of the bonenapper (an extra little ep on the DVD)
then the book of dragon (which is just telling about the dragons in the book in greater detail)
Dragons: Gift of the Night Fury (a holiday Christmas special)
Dreamworks Dragons (Season 1 & 2)
Dragons: Dawn of the Dragon Racers
Dragons: Race to the Edge (6 Seaons in Total and the most complete in terms of world building and setting up to the second movie)
Second movie
Third movie
And finally, to cap it all off, How to Train your Dragon: Homecoming (Another holiday special to end on a good note)
thanks!
i cry every time i watch any of the 3 in the series. everything about this story is absolute storytelling perfection.
@@biazacha villain in 3rd movie was a little meh but still all 3 movies are amazing
I'm so excited to see y'all do this series! This is my favorite animated movie and my favorite animated trilogy of all time! And Eric is right--the score is AMAZING.
As Eric states, the music in this movie is just the best.
The animators took inspiration from their pets to animate Toothless, which is why he has both cat-like and dog-like mannerisms.
Test drive is the most iconic scene in the whole franchise. Fight me.
The soundtrack is amazing. Within seconds i could recognize it anywhere. I saw a a clip of someone turning the main theme into like wedding theme and now i want it it mine 😅
You have no idea how fast I clicked on this video!! I always get excited to see first time watchers experience this underrated masterpiece! 💙
one of my favorite trilogies of all time! absolutely amazing
How to train your Dragon is one my favorite animated trilogies. Watching it as a kid the first one always has a soft spot in my heart. This is a perfect trilogy😀
This Movie is a Masterpiece! One of my personal favorite animated movies. Please watch the sequel and the 3rd movie they are all so wonderful
Definitely agree with what you said first, the score is absolutely amazing from start to finish. It should have won the Oscar that year.
Test Drive never fails to give me chills.
One of DreamWorks’ best franchises of all time.
grew up when the first 2 films were released so excited for this reaction such gems that can be enjoyed by all ages
Happy to see Janci has such good taste
everytime the flight soundtrack starts playing i literally cry. incredible
This is in my top 5 of animated movies. Love this!
I remember seeing all the trailers coming out when I was kid and this movie still holds up to childhood memories
YESSS. The second one is my favorite!!!!! Keep watching!! The music is some of the best music ever written for cinema.
This is probably my favourite movie of all time
Would love to see you do 2 and 3. I would hope Janci would come back for those too!
Personally. This is my favorite trilogy of all time. Gurdians of the galaxy is up there but this is perfection
Also my favourite movie of all time. And my comfort movie. Haha so happy to see you guys react to it. The soundtrack is also one of my favourites
This Dragon trilogy is one of my absolutely favourite trilogies of all time.
Also 1000% agree with Eric, the soundtrack is phenomenal 👌
One of my favorite movies and the trilogy is definitely up there too as one of the best. It has a compelling story, great characters, masterful production, and I always get emotional no matter how many times I rewatch it; something that the movie industry is lacking these days. I wish I could watch this again in theatres, truly a once in a lifetime experience, especially when the music resonates at peak quality.
It's crazy how incredible this score is
I can describe how much I love HTTYD, it’s my favourite story of all time
This is probably one of my favorite reactions you guys have done recently and it was so fun seeing Aaron and Calvin react to it for the first time! It would be awesome if you guys reacted to the rest of the movies too
The soundtrack is reason enough to watch this
Something you guys *almost* clued into, is that toothless is basically a cat.
(One of the shows that takes place between the first and second movie)
In the shows we see that some Vikings in the tribe still hate dragons, and for a very long time Hiccup, Astrid, and the other kids are the only Vikings who can ride dragons.
We eventually get to see other characters train their own dragons, but it isn’t until the 3rd movie that there’s random unnamed background characters with their own dragons.
One of the best trilogies imo. I’m always down to rewatch any part of it. Hits you with every feels.
Wow, Eric wasn't kidding about loving this movie. Look at that ending monologue, I haven't seen him that emotionally hooked since Mass Effect.
Already super excited for you guys to watch the next two movies. I don't think it can be stated enough just how powerful and impactful this movie was, especially to my generation (I'm 24)
Love the reaction as always guys!
Aaron's happy tears at 26:18 are so wholesome! Gosh, I LOVE this film so, so much!
I have a tattoo of toothless covering almost my entire left bicep and shoulder 🖤
(also, English is not my first language so I apologize for any possible mistakes) THANK YOU FOR REACTING ❤
we need 2 and 3 immediately!
Janci is so great. Bring her back as often as possible pls and thank you
There are so many details you wouldn’t notice on a first watch. For example, when Astrid says sorry, toothless calms the flight. When stoic says sorry, toothless reveals hiccup is alive. When hiccup first discovers toothless he says “I did this” and when stoic thinks hiccup died, he says the same thing.
I love this movie and grew up with them. Watched the third movie and cried in the theater. Didn't watch the series, but I am catching up to it.
2:03 when I read the Inheritance Cycle, I pictured Eragon as a slightly altered version of Hiccup. It also took me a lot of mental energy to picture Saphira as the dragon on the first book’s cover instead of just Toothless.
I love this movie! Toothless is so adorable. I'm so glad the new Universal park will be incorporating HTTYD in it. ❤️
