I've been waiting to comment on Lester and his videos for a while but my phone wouldn't allow me up till now .I have partnered Lester most Wednesday's and Saturday for whole time he has been doing his blogs and featured in three of them ! He's a great guy and great fun to play with and his golf is so close to perfect , just having yips occasionally . Lester keep it up and perfection is just around the corner . N a personal note I'd like to thank all the subscribers that have commented on the blogs I've been in , they've been fun to do even if my camera work needs a lot of work 😂😂 Gareth.

Really interesting and entertaining vlog - I wouldn't worry about the armlock putting, use whatever works best is always the answer! You are definitely swinging well, so get the short game practice built up as the weather improves and you'll be heading to scratch soon enough. Golf is never easy and needs constant attention, but you are going int the right direction and we're enjoying the journey. Keep up the great work.

Two things Lester. Watch the video and look at your putting alignment vs face path. Your feet, hips and shoulders are set up well left and then you're "pushing" the face more right. That's an easy fix. The second thing is putter head weight. More often than not when a player tells me they sense the head getting loose during the stroke it's a head weight feel issue. I'd suggest adding some lead tape and seeing if that stabilizes the head feel. That Sub 70 head is 430g which might seem heavy enough but the lead weight will let you know if the weight is an issue for you. Cheers!

Bernie, I cured the problem of not getting the putter to stay on line, simply by gripping the putter really tightly. This eliminates a "wristy" action, and makes you putt with your shoulders

    • @berniebarnesgolf
      @berniebarnesgolf  2 місяці тому

I’ll try gripping it tighter mate, see if that helps.

    • @granttanner1872
      @granttanner1872 2 місяці тому

@@berniebarnesgolfCam Smith advocates a firmer grip which should be good enough advice for everyone. I actually use a firmer left hand grip which helps me avoid pulling my putts. Anyway forget the process and rely on your instincts as you have good enough hand eye coordination to putt well.

Bernie, I know what it's like to be fixated with the back stroke with putter. I tend to wave the putter around in the back stroke, sometimes inside, sometimes outside. Finally, it dawned on me that, since face angle is the main factor in getting a putt started on line, my errant back stroke wasn't the main reason I was missing putts. Now, I pay little attention to my back stroke and that has helped my putting a lot. Basically, I got out of my own way. I hope this helps. Cheers!

G’Day Lester, we all have the putting woes, my mates said “ I’d be a great player if I could putt “ so I embarked on a plan to improve my putting, both technically & mentally. Here’s my “ go to “ under pressure, when I line up my putter to the ball, I find a spot 3 inches in front of the ball & stare at the spot as if my life depended on it & roll the ball over that spot. After that the Golfing gods will do their thing. Great for any length of putt. I’ve never missed a four footer ever. All Good Mate.

I agree with comments re early season greens they are inconsistent for speed and maybe makes putting 15% more difficult .
One technique for forgetting the past bad shots is literally to mark off on your scorecard every 3 holes . That way the idea is you play the course in 6 blocks of 3 holes , and start again after every 3 .
Not easy though the mind can come up with unhelpful thoughts very easily !
My thoughts - lots of practice putting on good surfaces !
    Good luck with the quest!

Appreciate your honesty when talking about the mental game. It’s so hard sometimes to let things go. I’m way better now in my 40’s because I just play with friends for fun and I try to not even think about my score until the round is over. Sorry to see the putter remains a struggle. Has Coach Jamesy ever watched some of these videos to see how you putt on course vs in the studio? Remember progress is never linear, always ups and downs. You know what you need to do, now it’s just go out and do it. Golf is hard, but also has to be fun!

Alright Captain Nudger, there is no failure here, this is positive because you are finding motivation. Parkland courses after 4 months of rain have greens surfaces like fairways, so give yourself a pass on putting. However, grab an old heel shafted traditional putter like Ben Crenshaw used to use, great for training stroke and strike. Short game practice is a great idea, even in crap weather we can practice for hours. Sunshine on the way Lester

Why do pros go to the sunnier climates in the winter ? I feel your pain Bernie. We also had a non qualifying event which I shot 5 over but given course conditions and the weather, freezing cold and the ball not travelling anywhere I’m happy with it. The putting woes are more down to the greens than your stroke. When your hitting putts not stroking them it’s harder to get the line right. Treat these rounds as practice for when the weather and conditions improve. The range though not ideal is great for practicing chipping as your concentrating on technique which will translate onto the course. Keep up the good work

Bernie, you’re not that far off. As you said things are getting in your head like that fence. The only reason you’re teeing it up near it is that’s where you are forced to by the winter tee. It wouldn’t be allowed in there otherwise.
One shot at a time and you’ll make less errors. You have to decide to take that approach in the car park though and stick to it all the way round.
Your GIR numbers show your taking too many putts shooting that number. To stay low you need to get up and down a good few times a round but it’s still winter golf and the surfaces and heavy lies won’t help so don’t be too hard on yourself.
In my humble opinion I think you need to go back to the traditional putter, stand taller to be a bit less hunched over it and concentrate on your tempo. When you hit a good putt it seems so much better in the camera angles you have shown rather than too slow back and thumping it.
Check out Eric Kaplan’s teaching technique. I can send you a couple of emails for a look. Putter lag for instance. I’m sure coach Jamesy will have his own opinion on them but I reckon you could benefit from looking at it.

Very brave of you to put this out there and be honest in your assessment of your game. Your long game and ball striking is good and I wouldn't worry too much about the odd bad shot as even the top pros have a few of those. The difference is in scrambling for pars and not compounding errors to make doubles or worse. Your GIR numbers looked good and you had a fair few looks at birdie, but you didn't convert many and scramble well when you missed greens. And whilst the greens may not be at their best, your putting was, as you well know, nowhere near where it needs to be. Keep working on the short game and putting, get some confidence and it will fall into place. It is not as difficult as CONGU - you only need 8 good rounds out of 20. Onwards and upwards!

I have parallels to your game (although I'm about a dozen behind you on the olde handicap scale lol), I went through a phase of overthinking putts. A few points: 1. When you played Dan at Perranporth recently, I could tell he noticed how much better you were playing; 2. Everyone hits bad shots- you have the ability to hit a recovery shot so don't sweat the bad shots too much; 3. With respect, those greens were winter greens and looked to have aeration marks. Poor greens affect putting and chipping. You need fast and true greens and your scores will improve; 4. Lastly, I think you might benefit from a caddy to help with club selection, strategy and prevent you from overthinking. You have the talent- just let Bernie play and stop thinking. Pulling for you pal.

You did go back to the armlock. Didn't someone suggest that recently? ;) Good show. I wouldn't put too much stock into anything you weren't happy about the putting... The greens didn't look very smooth, and the ball was bouncing around some. So don't get down about it. The focus should be on the process right now... not the result.
I thought the stroke looked good with it too....and the ball looked to be coming off the face where you are aimed....that is the main thing. Speed control will improve in time, and after some good practice with it. If you are struggling with pace... experiment with adding some weight to the head. I wouldn't worry about feeling fixated on the putter head. Maybe use that hyper-focus productively... like to grid out a scale of how far back to take the putter for putts in 1 foot increments. That will make your brain process different information when you get like that, Instead of negative thinking... it will be good and useful information your brain is focusing on. Cheers Lester.

Thanks for the positive words Greg. I’ve really been struggling with the traditional putter, although it’s a change I don’t want to make, feel like it’s the only option at the moment. I will look to move back though as soon as possible.

I can’t even make a stroke with the traditional length putter at the moment David. If they banned the arm lok I think I’d stop playing at the moment 😂

Unfortunately this series is about highs and lows, like life is! This video was motivation for me to sort it out and practice! If it was easy there wouldn’t be a series or a journey 😂 most of my other videos are very positive Angela.

Oh Lester! What's going on with you? It's painful to watch you putting... The fundament for scratch is a decent short game! When i was in my prime as a young man, i hitted nearly every green in regulation - button scored a 2 over. So. I know how you feel about it. A friend of mine never hitting any green scored 4 under making 25 puts a round... - he plays scratch and better since 35 years. You have to get confidence in putting! I think you are do technical mistakes too. Your hole body tries to bring the ball in the hole, but the shoulder's would be enough for doing the work. You are also standing very close to the ball and so you push it sometimes... Watch Bryson with his armlock putter how mechanical he is working on the greens. He also stands very close to the ball, but his eyes are still inside the a line to the hole - yours sometimes not... And do the short puts inside the hole with speed! Anyway. I hope you get your confidence soon back! Cheers!

I wish it was easy as that Michael 😂 I’m working hard on it, but as anyone knows who’s had the yips it’s not quite as simple as “just do this” it’s a constant battle. I’m up for the fight though. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Get rid of that putter mate. Your stroke looks so awkward and unnatural with it.

It’s worse with a conventional putter at the moment unfortunately!

      Deary me…. My condolences.
I hope I never get to the stage that I can relate to that feeling. I’ve always just found it to be pretty easy to putt. Played to single figures for years despite the long game not being the best (it is improving). Putting has got me out of many a mess over the years.
The reason I say get rid of that putter is I think simplicity is the key with putting. Keep it natural and utilise your natural athletic ability.
      Keep at it.

I’ve always battled short game issue, well for the last 10 years. It can be frustrating as I can regularly hit 15/16 GIR and shoot over par. I once hit 17 and shot over par 😂 I’ll keep working it to find a solution.
