Dancing in the desert blowing up the sunshine is referring to the troops over seas in the desert at war. The "party" isn't an actual party, it's the war, hence the "where the fuck are you?" They push for military enrollment as a benefit to your future (which many in the lower class follow because to them it provides opportunities they may not have without it), but the leaders never seem to want to join the party because it wouldn't benefit them. It's a lovely critique. It makes my defiant brain happy. Sorry I was late to this one.😁

It's really nice to hear someone react to this song and dig into the meaning instead of just grooving on the riff changes.

This came out in 2005, and was very much about the American invasion of Iraq. "BYOB" means "Bring Your Own Bombs" here.

I will say the bring your own beers interpretation could also work as a sort of inner conflict within the song, as on one hand it's about this awful war in foreign lands, and yet the parties continue in in an almost blissful ignorance.
So on one hand, its bring your own bombs, and on the other they are asking to bring your own beers to the party
Just a thought I had which feels very interesting from a song wrighting perspective.
Edit: I only just realised this song is a play on bring your own beers, I've literally only ever heard the term bring your own bombs before from other media, I'm realising just how intentional the name is 😳. Seriously don't know how I didn't put that together sooner

This came out when the US declared we were going to war with Iraq. The "party" is the war - "Dancing in the desert blowing up the sunshine" . BYOB - Bring Your Own Bombs. Another good song they have on this topic is "Boom", but this is one of my favorite SOAD songs, I love when people react to it!

BYOB stands for bring your own bombs.
The imagery in the video where it says things like BUY and OBEY is taken from a wonderful 80’s movie called ‘They Live’.

one thing I did want to mention was the chorus and how catchy it is. when recruiters go to high schools to get teenagers to join the military they do make it seem like a party. even the ads you see here on UA-cam are very misleading. they promise a lot but at the end of the day you are just a tool for the American imperialist machine . I think that's why SOAD made that chorus so catchy to begin with.

There was a time when people used to brag about how much they paid in taxes to show their contribution to society. Rich men built libraries in their names as bragging rights while paying 80% taxes. Real strength comes with having the humility to realize your privilege in life and help those in need. Nobody makes millions of dollars in life without exploiting a worker. If monkeys hoarded bananas like billionaires hoarded money, we would study them intensely for their insane juxtaposition for perpetuating their species. Instead, we give these grifters accolades and put their names in history books. People who made money while making no actual contributions to society.

Everyone focuses on the government, and yes it is taking shots at the government. But it's also taking shots at the consumerism that keeps everyone shopping instead of getting pissed of, and also at the corporations who are bribing govt. so they can get a defense contract, or an oil subsidy.

This song needs to be listened to in context of the war against terrorism, the Iraq war, all that shit. Back in 2005 it was still all very real and happening. Think of the party reference as sarcastic commentary about the dissonance between having a beach party at home while bombing children abroad, and no one cares, it's just like "bro cool let's go fuck em up".

I know I'm a year late to this party, BUT. "Why don't presidents fight the war/why do they always send the poor..." is a roll over from the Vietnam War. (History teacher here...so I can't help myself) During the Vietnam War, college students were exempt from the draft, so the vast majority of the army grunts were from the lower socio-economic levels - both blacks and whites. It was the poor who went and paid the price for America's adherence to the Domino Theory - the fear that if one country in a region fell to communism, all the others in the region would, too, and at the height of the Cold War, we couldn't afford that. Now days (and this song was written to protest the Gulf War), it's still the lower socio-economic folks who fill the ranks of our army. The college kids still go to college, while the poor fight and hope to survive to reap the rewards of the GI Bill.
Love your reactions to SOAD; great band!

This song will forever be a complete jam sesh! It came out when I was in hs and was in response to the war in Iraq at the time. There were quite a few bands/artists around that time, who came out with music about this topic, including Green Day. Another great song from that time would be Counting Bodies Like Sheep by: A Perfect Circle.

it has always been my interpretation that the party could refer to the daily distractions and comforts of the first world (that are at least partly paid for by the suffering inflicted upon the developing world) and to the "Party" as in the illusion that (by participating in the politics we have allowed to take control) we in an alleged representative democratic republic have any real control over our political masters. SOAD doesn't spoonfeed, leaves a lot open to interpretation.

Entertaining reaction. Some of SOAD's lyrics have a little smoke and mirrors obscuring the meaning, or leaving the interpretation up to the listener. BYOB doesn't really do that. It's pretty on the nose with what it is trying to tell you. It's possibly my favorite track by them!

6:15 that's why the poor "volunteer" to go to war, but why do you think that's one of the few ways to climb out of poverty for a lot of people? Like the only real opportunity, unless your dad is rich and can buy your way through college and buy your way into a political office with dad's money.
I disagree that it's always been like this, or that it has to be like this. It's a system that depends on us to protect it, through complacency.

as to "why do they always send the poor" -
you have to bear in mind that the overwhelming majority of people in the services are young, and the young haven't even begun to gain rewards from their own labor and decisions, and are thus poor.
The young are also simply unformed, uninformed, and inexperienced enough to be molded to shape, to believe the big lies, to get excited and make durably life-altering choices out of emotion.
That, and the fact that they are still generally physically relatively undamaged compared to, say, folks my age, and it makes them uniquely suited to forming the muscle of any top-directed mass application, be it a sociopolitical movement or a military.
And, of course, there are so many of them compared to every other age bracket.
That, plus the economic incentives, answers the question of why the cannon-fodder are always the poor.

Of something bigger than themselves,or they realize it’s either join or spend the rest of their life
    on the streets complaining someone
else should be making their life better. Either way, songs like this
take’s away the wisdom and courage
and selflessness of an individual , to
    better themselves. And turns them
into yet another group of helpless victims, not to admire!
    and turns them into helpless

Capitalism requires a permanent lower class. In that lower class, things like healthcare, housing and education (something necessary for upper mobility) are scarce. One of the ways to get those things is to sell your body to the military.
Also, america hasn't fought a "defensive" war since ww2 (even thats debatable). Every war since then has been predatory. For capitalist imperialism and lining rich peoples pockets. Gotta keep the ceo's at Raytheon and Lockheed Martin fed despite the many poor peoples lives lost.
