- To support the Whittier City Council's strategic plan of enhancing public safety, the City of Whittier requested the assistance of Senator Bob Archuleta for the introduction of Senate Bill 1262. While it has been amended from the scope of changes sought by the City, the bill still seeks a modest change to California's post release supervision law.
If adopted, the legislation would require the county agency supervising a person on post-release to petition a court if the person has violated the terms of their release for a third time and committed a new felony or misdemeanor. It is hoped that the legislation will mitigate the opportunity for additional tragedies from occurring.
SB 1262 has passed from the Senate into the Assembly, where it was heard in the Assembly Public Safety Committee on July 2 and passed 5-0. The next steps would be consideration in the Assembly Appropriations Committee and a vote on the Assembly floor before, hopefully, being sent to the Governor’s desk for signature.
