  • While neither of my kids aspire to be authors, I do want them to leave our homeschool with strong writing skills. Over the years, we have continued to use the IEW Writing programs, including both their Structure and Style courses and their theme based programs. In this video I'll take you through our writing lessons for a week plus show you more about the IEW curriculum.
You can find all the IEW curriculum mentioned at www.iew.com/

Great video! We’ve done a couple of the theme based writing units and enjoyed them. I think they are intimidating for a lot of parents and this walk-through was very thorough in helping show what it actually looks like.

Thank you for this excellent overview! We're just starting homeschool this year in grades 6 and 8, and plan to use IEW. This was very helpful for me as mom-teacher, particularly the explanation of how you go about marking their assignments.

Thank you! My learners are in elementary school but these are good ideas for higher grades.

You mentioned how the SAT is changing. Where do you recommend looking to get an idea what is on the SAT/ACT? We are still in elementary, but curious what changes you're referring to. Thanks!

I visited the College Board site when researching PSAT, SAT and ACT. They have a section regarding what is on each part of the different exams. SAT used to have a part where you had to write and essay, but now the writing section focuses on finding and fixing errors in writing. Here’s the link to their site where they cover what’s on the SAT satsuite.collegeboard.org/sat/whats-on-the-test

Did you begin SSS 1B in 6th grade? I see conflicting opinions on whether a 6th grader who is new to IEW should start with 1B or 1A. Do you have an opinion on which is best for a 6th grader who is not a struggling writer or reader?

We started with year 1 of level B. At the time, I chose it because it was recommended for their grade levels. It was a good fit though. The readings they pulled notes from were appropriate for their age and reading levels. And I felt they understood the instructions well.

I can feel my blood pressure spike just contemplating putting a research paper together, let alone walking my kids through learning it. Coming up with a relevant and reasonable topic is the worst. Just tell me what to research and what points you want answered. I have great descriptive writing skills but zero creativity. I think I’ll be hiring out. 😂

I had to write so many of them back in college so I definitely drew from those experiences when helping them. However, I also found some good resources from 7 Sisters Homeschool that walk students through the process of essay/research paper writing. www.7sistershomeschool.com/product/category/english-writing/
My daughter's literature course from Apologia this year also had a two week lesson on all the steps of writing longer essays/papers that she said was a great review.
