I won free tickets to this show while partying at a bar in Iowa City the week before. Being at the concert made for a great way to celebrate July 4th! Awesome to be seeing it again 40 years later!
The highlight of the evening, and there were many moments, was the post-show fireworks battle between the parking lot and the parking ramp. Eventually both camps united and war against the hotel began, with rockets begin launched towards hotel guests gazing innocently out of their windows. It was truly grand. Glad I can remember it.
I was at this show and I'm so glad someone filmed this! I was a poor student at Hawkeye Tech and could only afford one ticket so the wife missed out on this epic show. It was a memorable night and I was shooting photos all day of the jugglers and Deadheads partying in the parking lots.
+Mark Slupe Myself and many people would looooove to see those photos. There is a thread posted on Facebook called "You know you Grew up in CR in the 70s and 80s if....." Also, if you go to the archive, there are some amazing memories/reviews of the show. Peace, man! archive.org/details/gd84-07-04.senn421.braverman.14194.sbeok.shnf
Saw the Dead several times between'79 - '87, but this show was part of my one mini-tour. From here I went to Alpine Valley, so 3 shows in 4 nights. Incredible how diverse each show was. No wonder they could keep it going so long at that level.
My grandparents were still alive and lived in Cedar Rapids during this time. I had just turned 13 at the time of this show:) Wish I could have been there but I wouldn't learn about GD for another 5 years or so!
@@charlie.something They never came around close to me anymore and post Touch of Grey when they became a huge football stadium band I had no desire to go. I was used to seeing them in theaters that held 3000 people tops.
I was only 13, didn't know squat about GD then either, but I sure remember the controversy over how the Cedar Rapids Police Dept behaved towards those coming to the city to see the concert. CRPD pissed off a ton of people, and many vowed to never come back for any reason.
38:05 ish “Thish wonz fromPaul the raiinbow bud.” Does anyone know what that means? Was that Phil being hammered on Heinekens? I have so many questions.
Subject: bus crash Does anyone know anymore details on Paul, the guy who died in the bus crash? Reviewer: jjg4762 - favoritefavoritefavoritefavorite - July 2, 2006 Subject: great show but......... paul was killed on the way to the show in K C. He had asked us for a ride to the starlight but we had no room. i in fact am the one who had suggested the ramble on rose bus. the bus crashed out side of st louis. he was killed when the gear from the bus landed on top of him after the bus lay in a small ditch of water he drown. TRUTH BE TOLD.
Well thank YOU!! For a real good time!! Do you know what kind of video you shot here? VHS, VHS-C? Great job man!! I was 18 and loving it!! Especially after show "horizontal" fireworks... CRAZY NIGHT!!!
the venue sucked! living in Cedar Rapids at the time friends from all over IA IL and WI showed up at our house we had a bbq and walked, more than 20 of us, to the venue. the five seasons center was known as a place that sound went to die and it was eanning it's reputation that night. we who had been to other concerts at the venue knew it sucked and we tried to assure those who were not that The Dead did NOT suck that night the venue did. in spite of all that we still had a real good time! years later i found the soundboard recording. it was a great show wish i had been there.

It's video. What it's video of is the question.
Franklin's -> Far for Me
Franklins far from estimated..... He's gone. That's a powerful statement. Wish to be reborn in grateful dead heaven. See you there
