"Featuring the two-keyboard, two-guitar, two-drummer, one-bass Grateful Dead lineup, this magnificent, soaring Help/Slip/Franklin's is one of the best of the late-era returns of this trio. In the lineup 1975-1977, 1983-1985, and 1989-1995, this enigmatic addition to the repertoire is one of the most dynamic and ambitious song cycles the Dead ever wrote and performed. From the Summer Tour of 1991 that also featured great shows at Deer Creek, Giants Stadium, Chicago, and Pine Knob, among others, this was the second release in the View From The Vault series." - David Lemieux
The most under-rated stop from Summer 91 was 2-night run at Sandstone in Bonner Springs, KS. with a smokin HelpSlipFrank to open night 1 with a nice Takes A Lot To Laugh, a Supplication Jam between Estimates and UJB, and a sparkling Dew, but it was night 2 when the band really stood up and grew some hair! Solid 1st set mixed in a nice Sugaree/West LA/Candyman 'Turkey' on point and the Music Never Stops 1st set closer was always one of my personal favs. Set II exploded out the gate with a VERY respectable Scarlet/Fire followed by Truckin/Smokestack(I thought this was gonna be my first and only New Speedway ...but no such luck ha!), He's Gone...but the highlight of the run, and for me personally the highlight of the summer was the long slow tease out of Space into Comes A Time...will they bring it?...will they..? Please PLEASE bring it...!? and finally Jerry takes it across the threshold. Comes A Time! One of the most intense moments I ever experienced as the 18K in attendance went into 'hear a pin drop' mode as Jerry poured his heart and soul out all over fly-over country that night. Wow! Then they fire up the turbo thrusters with a GDTRFB before Dr. Bob gives his diagnosis with a set closing Good Lovin! Finally Jer Bear and the boys return to the stage for a BEEEEEEAUTIFUL Baby Blue to close the run. This 2-night scorcher may be the unsung gem of the entire 1990's and is definitely the sleeper of all sleepers in a long list of incredible shows 1991. Would love to see some footage from Sandstone 91 make it's way out of the vault and into the public domain before my time is done here in this 4 dimensional realm called planet Earth. Nathan Verni I have always felt that Phil Lesh is the most interesting through all of the Grateful Dead history and he always gets a fantastic tone no matter what bass he is using at the moment.
That's a great comment. His bass playing is something you really have to listen to for a protracted period of time to appreciate fully. There's still something to be said for a bass player that can lay down a groove using majority pedal tones, but it just wouldn't be the Grateful Dead, though, and you can honestly say that no one plays quite like him.
This trio of songs will never cease to get me out of a negative mindset. I think its magically symbolic, the way it shifts from the contemplative and slightly dark vibe of help into the tumultuous slipknot which always feels like multiple forces kind of battling back and forth, and abruptly into the wave of love that is fanklin's tower. The final act always serves to remind me to let the past be the past, roll away the hardships of yesterday, and allows me to feel grateful in the present moment. Life is beautifully difficult but these 3 songs will always remind me of the good that balances the bad and that sometimes ya just gotta dance your way through the bullshit. Thank you Jerry

The band was particularly solid during much of '91. Arguably the last consistent vintage of that era. Bruce really decorates this grouping of tunes well. Nice accenting, never overplaying. I love what I love and I want it that way...

Wow, what sound! And I love those shots of Mickey and the way he kind of leaned right and drummed hard to his left... you could see it framed exactly this way from a certain angle on the floor.
Bruce probably came into it like a fan and saw that the magic is all but gone. Then he sees Jerry is no more than a performing monkey that supports the rest of the band which sickened Bruce so he decided he couldn’t contribute to that environment and left. That’s when the dead’s publicist releases a statement saying, he pursuing his solo career.
This is absolutely epic and fantastic to hear Bobby's guitar up in the mix for a change….brilliant recording and mix! Turns out I was there for this RFK show and, ya know, stadiums aren't known for their warm and sonic beauty. Thanks GD for sharing this one with us….stellar!
I was here (as well as the year before. Two RFK Dark Stars in a row!). Drove out from San Diego instead of Graduating from High School. Saw RFK > Sandstone. Very wise decision.
Hello, I am Jim I was lucky enough to see them many times, and was a cellist for 50 years. But Ego aside, they were amazingly precise, most of the time. I have always wondered about the lyrics, to these two songs. What do you think?
I Love the Dead. 72 shows when Jerry died 😢. It's too late now, but enough with the artsy slow mo - I just want to watch them play!! Especially with Bruce's childlike wonder and smile... Awesome Help On the Way. Well, it was All awesome! Just what this old gal needed tonight!
I've been particularly listening to and watching this UA-cam video of the music of these combination of songs for a while. Everytime I watch it I truly love it. Great camera shots and special effects make it fun. 😂
The two roller coasters at 17:45 are "Drachen Fire" (Blue) and "Loch Ness Monster" (Yellow) at Busch Garden's Williamsburg in VA. Drachen Fire opened the year after this show and thankfully closed in 1998 for being too rough on the riders. Loch Ness Monster is still open to this day!
Still bewildered by the odd transitions, and graphics they choose to put on these videos back when. *You know what? Let's wipe into a cascading heart. Cool? Cool!*
My favorite ever-Help is my Fab song my whole life😌-but the awesomeness of it is so apparent here-i remember Vince at shows-i so miss Jerry Vince Brent-love to the universe for them all and the precious gifts they shared!! They brought me so many smiles and I felt such joy!!!
Slipknot within itself is a piece to be reckoned with but as an overall Help Slipknot/Franklin I'd have to say the drop into Franklin at the Great American Music Hall of '75 is historic.
I have been watching this obsessively, as this is the ONLY show I ever had front row tix. Haven't seen myself yet, and not sure if I should. I had hair?
I was up front for this one too. GDTS did me right! There was a block of seats on the field near the stage but for the second set crowd surges pretty much destroyed it.
Bruce Hornsby has a look crossed between sheer terror and joy in this cip, but my man is up to the task. Welnick has it in spades here. Only the Dead would have 2 keys players.

Jerry looks like a prophet. Gift from god.
Without love and a dream insanity is king.
"Without love in the dream it'll never come true"
"Without love day-to-day insanity's king"
@@martyhopkirk6826 Sure did mix it up there didnt I? Haha
@@FunkHitsTheFan It happens to the best of us!
God knows how much I miss them
Hornsby + Grateful Dead = Magic ✨
I had a nice, happy smile listening + watching to this
Here's my obligatory weekly comment asking for way more video releases..like everything sitting in the vault. kthx.
How much more is there?
Jerry sounds crisp... Awesome show. Thanks
Hornsby.. all of them, sooo happy.. 💖🎼🌼🦋🌹😘💓💓💓🖤🎶🎶🎶🌖🖤
Haha, Drachen Fire on-ride cameo! A coaster I was a year late to get to experience. So many memories in this great video!
Jerry’s voice in this is awsome
Really good for this late. He always seemed like he loved Franklin’s Tower.
Two months before I was born!
Thanks again. Truly blessed to have been at this show. . . Fine times indeed.
Wow, what sound! And I love those shots of Mickey and the way he kind of leaned right and drummed hard to his left... you could see it framed exactly this way from a certain angle on the floor.
Bruce looks like he truly understands how great his temporary position is. He knows he is lucky AF
nothing lucky about it, Bruce is the best piano player of his generation
I think it can be both. He's incredibly great, and incredibly grateful.
He has the look of someone who just started a new job and really LOVES their new boss.
I thought interviews have shown that Bruce didn't particularly enjoy his tenure with GD.
I have been learning this entire show on guitar.
💀⚘⚡♥️⚡⚘💀
was there, thank all the gods
This is absolutely epic and fantastic to hear Bobby's guitar up in the mix for a change….brilliant recording and mix! Turns out I was there for this RFK show and, ya know, stadiums aren't known for their warm and sonic beauty. Thanks GD for sharing this one with us….stellar!
I didn't realize there was anyone else there but some backup band to Jerry.
@@Acujeremy How could you be in two places at once when you weren't anywhere at all? :)
I was here (as well as the year before. Two RFK Dark Stars in a row!). Drove out from San Diego instead of Graduating from High School. Saw RFK > Sandstone. Very wise decision.
YES, RFK moves in time with sufficient boogie in the upper decks
Hahaha... indeed you made the quintessential choice of a lifetime!
Love seeing clips of shows I attended - thanks!
The recent views spike, is me😂 I CANT STOP LISTENING TO THIS
🎉🖖😝👌🕺💃🕺💃🕺
So glad to be able to reach back and see the boys all over again. Long live the Grateful Dead. ⚡️
God save the child who rings that bell 🙏
Hello, I am Jim
I was lucky enough to see them many times, and was a cellist for 50 years.
This is pure joy! ❤️⚡️💙
I've been going to Busch Gardens for the better part of 40 years. To all the sudden be on both Loch Ness and Drachen Fire was an unexpected trip
The look on Jerry's face when they come out of Slipknot...priceless
loving this!!! thank you...an inter-dimensional-time-travelling-moveable-feast
Still bewildered by the odd transitions, and graphics they choose to put on these videos back when.
*You know what? Let's wipe into a cascading heart. Cool? Cool!*
Excellent sound quality. I can hear everyone clearly!
Very smooth transition into Franklin’s, then Bruce chimes in! Very nice!
Ooohh….❣️❣️❣️. This came to me at the right moment, made me feel so good….💙💀⚡️🌹♥️
All these boys are on point.
Slipknot jams are some of my favorites the Dead did, 2/26/77 is the gold standard, this one rocks too for sure
5/9/77 disagrees
Peak Picture Framing 5/22/77 has got somethin to say
Slipknot within itself is a piece to be reckoned with but as an overall Help Slipknot/Franklin I'd have to say the drop into Franklin at the Great American Music Hall of '75 is historic.
@@josevillarreal9920 Oh yeah 8/13/75 is some straight up fire
I’ve always found 8/13/75 and 5/22/77 to be the pinnacle versions
I have been watching this obsessively, as this is the ONLY show I ever had front row tix. Haven't seen myself yet, and not sure if I should. I had hair?
We all did back then.
I was up front for this one too. GDTS did me right! There was a block of seats on the field near the stage but for the second set crowd surges pretty much destroyed it.
The whole band was firing on all cylinders what a show
That help on the way is bonkers. Crazy that they were able to play at this level with jerry in the state that he was. Also hell yeah Bruce
I’m so glad for u to still have ur mom at that age ! Incredible ! ❤️❤️❤️🫶🏼✌️💀😱🥰😵💫🥳👽🪐👻
Loving the quality of this video.. The picture is great and the playing is top notch also..
Bruce Hornsby has a look crossed between sheer terror and joy in this cip, but my man is up to the task. Welnick has it in spades here. Only the Dead would have 2 keys players.
beautiful tune !!!
Thank you
Bruce on the ivory's never brought me the smile Brent did. But this was freaking close.
I love the end. "And that's how you do that," says Jerry to Mickey. Why indeed it is!
IWT third row in front of Bruce. Asked Bruce to play Mandolin Rain. He replied, while pointing towards the Band. I gotta play what they want.
