Sure sounds like the Dead were enjoying the newness & fullness of Brent's keyboards just a few months after replacing Keith & Donna - especially in Playin. The organ sounds so lush and full at one point that the guitars just stop and they let Brent spread out his sound all over the arena. The "color" that the boys had stated they were hungry for had arrived. Thanks for posting this show!!!

  • @phoenixeyeris

I was at this show. 16 years old. Literally blew the top of my head open. Not sure what song or jam, but I had full crown chakra activation. Kinda surprised (and bummed) that I didn't get on the bus and follow them on tour. I did see them again in 1980, same place. And I got to see them in 77 at the Paramount, courtesy of my best friend's 17 year old girlfriend. So I got to see them with Keith and Donna, and then Brent. One of my few regrets, not getting on the bus in the 80's instead of going to college like a good little robot. Fuck.

Best rhythm guitarist ever. Try his style of playing - can’t be done, he created his own style, chord changes and combinations, and laid the track for Jerry’s playing and lead (tough to do by any measure). BW is completely under appreciated and under valued in our greater grateful community. It’s time to give him the props he deserves. Plus, he is a genuinely nice dude.

Pig was the original keyboardist. He died in '73. Donna was the wife of the next keyboardist, Keith Godchaux. He and Donna were both asked to leave the band in, I think, '79, after some issues came to a head regarding their excessive drug use. Donna's singing really went south and Keith's playing suffered considerably. They broke ties for the sake of the band's musical integrity. And so began then era of Brent. And that, as we say here in the South, is a whole 'nother story.

I love Brent just a couple of months playing with one of the biggest rock acts ever. The spotlight didn't seem to big for him. Keith was a great part of Grateful Dead but they seemed to be totally reenergize in 79. Sorry but I'm not a huge Donna guy but she has had her moments too. NFA65-95!!!
