He surely is a great conductor!!! Rhythmically very careful and accurate. A lot of conductors try to compensate with loudness to hide all their inaccuracies, but he was very protective of the music and the singer, which is a very rare talent now a days... I wish him the best of the best!

Carey Coleman lmfao you must not know much about the opera world then. There are plenty of americans who can properly sing opera. You not knowing them doesn’t mean they don’t exist. It simply means you’re euro-oriented LOLs.

I'm sorry, but could you please stop comparing everything with Callas? Don't get me wrong, I love Callas (how could you not love her?). It is just tiring to read almost on every video with roles Callas sang: "Only singer besides Callas" "Callas did that better" "You should listen to Callas" etc. There is a world after Callas.
That said, I have to admit that Joyce is amazing and that her attention to detail is wonderful, as her singing and musicality is! She is just marvellous.
askdhg , Callas did not it better at all. She became a legend with a name . I think novadays vocal technique and awareness of the sound cerated much better singers, especially technically.
You couldn't be more wrong. Sure there are some great singers around today but nothing like the number in golden age of the 40's 50's and 60's. Some of today's "celebrated" artists would have been considered second rate in those times. Joyce is of course is exceptional but a talent like hers is all too rare now.

Delicious! Like a hot bowl of cassoulet de Bordeaux! As Juan Diego and Lawrence sit on the Rossini tenor throne, so next to them sits Joyce and very few others, such as Kasarova . If you like bashing your head against a wall, try studying Rossini - not for the faint of heart. Anything that sounds that easy is a bow to the artist's mastery of his awesome vocal demands.

Thanks a lot for your comment and I really appreciate it. As for the orchestra… it is the Bordeaux-Aquitaine orchestra, definitely a major orchestra, conducted by a major conductor (Kwamé Ryan). As for the lighting, the camerawork I must admit they did not strike me as I watched these great moments live on TV. After reviewing these clips, I understand it may bother some.. but I have also seen much, much worse in that instance and real artists (singers, orchestra..) remain above these issues.
Brava Joyce. The lights are as terrible as the camera-work - but JDD is so good that even this audience is silent throughout her aria -- including all its splendid embellishments. And the orchestra is also pretty good for a TV ensemble! Thanks for posting this on YT!
She is simply incredible! To me, she now inherits the role of "reference performer" for Rosina as a mezzo from my all-time favorite, Teresa Berganza. I like the formidable Berganza, she has that fantastic comedienne side of her personality that makes her so suitable for this role.
I have been searching the Internet for any video or audio clips of Joyce singing Habanera from Carmen (another reference role for mezzo) but could not find it. Did Joyce ever sung Carmen?

Bravissimo! Always new embelishments and yes, I agree, the camerawork is terrible.
Callas and Sutherland never sang with microphones, my dear friends, and even with a mike her middle voice is quite small, with a beat on finishes. She has a gorgeous tone, ebullient spirit, but the cadenzas are so simplified from the original Garcia version - slowing the tempo and singing melismas instead of gruppetti, for instance - that it is unrecognizable from the true Rossini canon. Alas, Florez sings Nadir like he's singing Siegfried, Garanca is mechanical; opera is really losings its personaggio.
Well about the michrophone XD. Normally if the place it's not good for the correct development of the sound in the complete hall, microphones are required (or they aren't used for an exact amplification of the voice, maybe for the transmission on TV so there is a good quality of sound). You can see as an example the Royal Albert Hall, Pavarotti used microphone U.u. And about modern opera, it will loose it's "personaggio" if you want it, you can stay on the past or move to new ideas of opera, it's your choice. But please respect and don't bother, please, the people that like it. From a 16 years old opera fan of Guatemala, have a nice life with your exquisite musical taste.
juan francisco verdugo rivas It's not a question of snobbery, Juan, but a reverence for the Grand Tradition. Opera is not pop, or even jazz, whose musical styles mutate with cultural changes. Opera is classical, based on ancient techniques of melodrama, and the bel canto style - which is not just beautiful singing but a schooling to preserve the intentions of each composer's style. This is just ridiculous abuse of Rossinian style. She has a great voice and has sung other roles really well, but this is just a mess.
DiDonato is using a microphone because it's a live TV transmission. As funny as it sounds, TV cameras in reality only capture video and no sound. Separate microphones are needed in order to transmit sound; the same thing happens in filmed TV shows or movies
+infrantasi As a life-long fan of Gobbi and Schipa both of whom had mastered the art of voice projection, I understand your comment. But as others have said, the mics are there for recording purposes. De Donato has no problem projecting her voice on the opera stage.

Gregory Diercks I know she is. Again I prefer mezzos to sopranos singing this. And by the way Joyce is a lyric coloratura mezzo to be exact.
@@jjh2456 She's NOT a soprano. I think maybe you mean you prefer a darker/richer sound. Cool. I like the lighter, lyric sound for Rosina - after all, she's supposed to be a young girl. It is also true that Rossini wrote this wrote originally for a contralto; but, he also rewrote her arias in higher keys to allow voices like Joyce and even Beverly Sills to sing them! I LOVED Sills' Rosina.
Good interpretation, but little squillante sound. (swallowed sound) The new technique of the XXI century? this is sad.
This seems to be trange fenomenan amongst modern opera singers, they really do sound like they have something stuck in throat, also they create extremly "wide sounds" which then loses the power, most of todays singer are just IMO meh...
I do love Joyce, but I can hear the same unfortunately :/
Of all of her performances of the piece, I can say comfortably that this is my least favourite. In earlier recordings she sounds far less swallowed.

Not bad many right things...but very fast vibrato....not together with the orchestra...not good.... but It's was right you told in masterclass Mrs.Didonato.
Delileo Delilei her vibrato is completly normal, specialy if compared to those who sang bel canto 100 years ago ;) music is to be appreciated and not judged
I agree her vibrato on high notes especially has gotten very quick since 2010. It would be explained if she were a dramatic-mezzo but she isn’t, so I’m not sure why it has gotten this way. The rest of the voice is fine to listen to but upper register is becoming just short irritating. At least to me. I still love her though.
Wow! She is stupendous! What agility, timbre and unbelievable range! Orchestra is very mediocre as is the conductor. Ensemble is not tight, they rush her and don't support her as she deserves. Joyce, you are absolutely fabulous.
