    I was telling my husband 10 minutes ago that im just calling a plumber and having him replace the entire pipe behind the wall of my shower- an that if the wall was going to get opened up then i might as well replace the old worn tile- and if im doing THAT then im going to replace the tub. I think you jut saved us a few grand.

    I replaced the whole stem on my faucet because the brass was chipped. The faucet still leaked, and now I know why. I had no idea that you could replace the valve seat! Thanks for the video.

    Just a suggestion for anyone trying this.This is a good simple repair video,however before installing the cover and knob you should have turned on the water and checked for leaks way in the back where (you put the teflon tape)the seat is before closing it up,once covered you would never see a leak inside the wall. Otherwise nice video.

    Oh man. I just paid $120 for a plumber to come fix a leaky faucet. 10 minutes and 2 gaskets changed... and 5 days later the leak is back and worse than ever. Found this video, removed the seat, and sure enough there is a good sized nick in the ring. Wish I had tackled it myself in the first placed and saved myself some money! Thanks for the help.

    I had never known what was behind a shower faucet or how to get it off. Thanks to your video and another video I was able to fix the leak. I am going to change the stem on all three knobs (hot/cold/shower-faucet knob). Like Gomer Pyle said, THANK YA! THANK YA! THANK YA!

    Just watched your video. I had changed out the washer and a few weeks later my hot water started leaking in the shower again. This time I changed out the stem valve because I noticed that the metal housing that the washer sits in was deteriorating. NO MORE DRIPPING! Thank you!

    I also had a leaking shower valve and it is fixed now. I was not sure about the procedure until watching your video. I have a different stem type but he process is the same and the nut for the stem is not as easily reached. A five dollar stem wrench from the hardware store solved reaching the nut. Thanks for the video.

    Thanks, this gave me enough info to fix my leaky shower myself...a few things for those who have 20 yr old valves though....the knob may be fused to the valve stem...you may need to drill it out..start with a 1/16th bit, move up to 1/4"...it will come of.f..but you will need a new valve as you will have destroyed it. Also, if you can't unscrew the valve from the pipe....aside fromWD 40...use a heat gun or hair dryer....learned this trick taking shotguns apart...give is 30 secs high heat and it screws right off.

    Good video, one error. Never tighten the stem without backing off the knob a turn or so. It is possible that the washer will bottom against the valve seat before the stem is fully seated, cutting the the washer.

    THANK YOU your video is excellent, I learned a lot plus I won't be calling my plumber anymore, he kept changing the washer but not the valve seat :) Faucet seat wrench $ 6 at Ace and I got the washer kit for $5... No more drip drop

    Had I seen this video a day earlier I would've saved $36. I had the same dripping problem for months and decided to do it myself with no knowledge of plumbing. Got new stems and handles and everything worked out great except that all I needed to do was change one washer. But then again the old stems were mismatched in length and worn out as the handles I had before were the wrong size. So not only I stopped the leak but it looks great now. Now I know for next time and save money.

    Looks like you had an easier time than I did. On my first try I encountered some problems that you didn't have. First off, I didn't have the pleasure of removing the faucet stem and taking it to the hardware store. I live in a condo and needed to get permission from the resident manager to schedule a shut off date. I only had a two hour window to repair my leaky faucet. Once the water was shut off, I then had to remove the hot water stem with my locking pliers. While I was able to remove it with the pliers, the surface area to remove the stem was very small. Once I had removed the stem, I had difficulty removing the seat. I don't know if it was stuck or I wasn't using the seat removal tool correctly. I probably should have tapped on it a little. Anyway, I replaced the stem with a new one and just utilized the original seat. Luckily the seat wasn't too damaged and the leaking stopped. Thanks for the informative video though.

    Thank you for posting this video. I have the same problem, and although Im pretty mechanically inclined, I was a little skeptical in attempting to repair this myself. But not anymore!! Im especially glad to know I have to turn the water service off. A big dummy associate from H.D. said I didn't have to. So thanks again also, for preventing a possible scalding from hot water. Best to you

    • @jenniesgarage
      @jenniesgarage  10 років тому

      raylotta1 I'm sure you'll figure it out. After you know how the thing works, you realize there are only a few places where it can be leaking. Happy hunting!

    • @raylotta1
      @raylotta1 10 років тому

      Im not sure if you covered this in your video. And Im asking without researching it, but can the stem be adjusted to open or shut with less force? Or with less rotations of the knob?

    • @jenniesgarage
      @jenniesgarage  10 років тому

      raylotta1
      The rate that the valve opens is detemined by the threads that are cast in the valve, so that can't be adjusted. The resistance you feel when you turn the knob is from the seal around the stem. You might try loosening the packing bushing (see 7:36) but not too much or you'll have a leak around the stem. Good luck!

    Thanks for such an informative video, great refresher for me. It's been 10 yrs or more since my last one. As for your shower head, they sell low pressure "power shower" heads for $5-$6 at Wal-Mart. Great for a man, the ladies don't care for`m much tho. Steps up the spray, we had them on Navy ships

    • @rhondacooper7007
      @rhondacooper7007 9 років тому

      Although I am sure you have solved your problem by now this info might be helpful to someone else reading this thread ...
      I had a stripped cold seat. I researched the internet and found this useful information. Using the seat wrench you place it in the seat and tap it lightly with a hammer. It makes new grooves in the seat (inside) and I was able to un screw the stripped seat.

    • @THOMMGB
      @THOMMGB 6 років тому

      I had a similar problem where the wrench wouldn't engage. It seems that the end of the wrench was hitting the back of the pipe. My solution was to grind the end of the wrench down. You could probably use a file if you don't have a grinder. That allowed the wrench to fully engage in the seat. The old seat unscrewed easily and was replaced.

    Yeah that's the thing. I would have assumed it wouldn't be easily accessible. On top of that my wife would have said "just call a plumber before you start putting holes in the wall, and cost us even more". She has little faith. Not that me tearing things up that I've tried to fix is unheard of. :-)

    Last note: it was my valve handle screw head that had snapped off....so I had to drill...but when I did get it off it was fused with mineral deposits. Price Pfister...not bad for 23 yrs....fixed hot water side, cold water side works fine but I bought the kit for both at ACE...about $40. Saved over $300 on a plumber! I had individual shut off's in basement.

    If I may make one comment - when you are referring to re-seating the valve+/ replacing the metal washers could you please be more specific about the type of sealant you are using for example: is it waterproof sealant or is it ptfe tape?

    I live in a older house made back in the 70s, I didn't have to cut the main water line to the house off to replace my shower valve stems, is that something only necessary for newer homes are did I just break a plumbing rule by not cutting the main water line off to the house?

    • @jordansamson6071
      @jordansamson6071 9 років тому

      I'm no expert, but my house was built in '69 and I have to do the same thing (turn off main water supply) in order to do any work. Unfortunately there are very few, if any, shut off valves in my home past the main shut off. And no, I have never heard of anything negative about doing what you did, as long as you don't break that main valve! lol

      Thanks for the feed back Jordan Sampson. The weird thing is I had to use the old diverter valve for the 2nd bathroom cause the one that came with the kit from Lowes for some strange odd reason didn't work, the threads were slightly different but ironically the hot and cold valve stems in the kit I got from Lowes worked lol, I did put new gaskets on the old diverter valve and now everything is fine. I have a water cut off tool it only takes a few seconds to cut main water supply off to the house. I try to do all the work I can when need be because calling a plumber is just to Dame high in this City are probably every were else too.

    My plumber said that he has to replace the whole faucet because he can't repair the thread, He can replaced the seat but the thread ring he can't replace, so he says. So he's charging 500 dollars to put in a complete new faucets. He replaced it 3 yrs ago but he says my hot water was too hot and it destroyed the thread. And this is with a discount.

    I have a hot, cold & the one for the tub. The one for the tub is shut off & closed cuz its no longer used. My cold one leaks, the threading was stripped on the stem, bought a new one, replaced it, changed the o ring on all 3 of them. Now that the leak is gone, only a little water comes on from the hot one.

Plus unless your a Plumber Most People don't have the Tool Around your Home So that was over $10.00 So Just to let the people Know it is a Easy Fix if you have the right tools Also 99 out of 100 your not going to be able to use an adjustable tool you will need the Socket that fits the Stem to remove it from the wall area And make sure you Turn the Main water supply on the outside of the Home
