      Know How Now That Fix It Guy hi. A plumber installed a brand new tub faucet yesterday. Now there is an issue. When running the diverter, only water comes out of the diverter with good pressure. The problem is when running the shower, the diverter still running. Both at good pressure. When everything is turned off, there are no leaks. I noticed this after the plumber installed and I asked the plumber why the diverter would still run, when shower is still running. The plumber said that is what the new faucets do now. That seems like a huge waste of water when showering. Is what he’s saying true or did he install something wrong? If he installed wrong, what is the fix?

    I reinstalled my delta faucet 17730 diverter. First I put it in with the two holes up and only the tub worked. Then I installed it with the two holes down and the tub and shower only work at the same time. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

    • @Know-How-Now
      @Know-How-Now  2 роки тому

      I'm not familiar with that Delta product. A few things.... is it the correct replacement part? If possible, I buy the OEM part. Sometimes aftermarket parts are a problem. If you are not sure how it goes back together, you may try going to Delta's website and look for a parts diagram for you faucet. Delta also may have some sort of tech support.

    You said not to have it in the closed position? So should i turn on the handle like i want water to come out the shower head before removing it?

    • @Know-How-Now
      @Know-How-Now  Рік тому +1

      Before installing it you'll want to turn it so that the end of the valve (the part with the washer on the end) is closest to the part where the handle is attached. If you would measure it from handle to washer, it would be the shortest possible distance.... most compact. I also show it that way while I am explaining. Good question, after rewatching that part I understand that what I am saying may be confusing.

    When I turn the shower divert valve water flows great out of the shower but when it’s in the opposite position water barely flows out of the hot or cold lines to the faucet. How could the shower diverter valve cut the flow of water to a trickle to the faucet?

    • @Know-How-Now

      It's hard to say what is going on with the diverter until you remove it. You will have to take it apart to repair anyway. Maybe there is debris clogging something.

    How would on remove a striped seat?

    • @Know-How-Now
      @Know-How-Now  2 роки тому +1

      From a thread discussing a stripped seat. Also, if I have something that is stuck, I treat it with penetrating oil (PB Blaster), wait an hour and try again to loosen it. It might take a few treatments, waits and tries to loosen, but it usually comes free.
      If you have tried to use a seat removal tool and stripped out the valve seat, it is possible to extract the stripped-out seat using a 'screw extractor' tool, which are available at most auto parts stores. The screw extractors come in different sizes, to fit different sized screws. If you've stripped the head of a screw or bolt, you drill a hole in that bolt and tap in a screw extractor, which has tapered shape and reverse direction aggressive threading. As you turn the extractor it gets tighter and tighter, until the treads move.
      I was able to buy a #5 size screw extractor for about $6 at the auto store (for a smaller faucet seat). Lowered it into the stuck valve seat, gave it a LIGHT tap to start, and used a socket set to turn it. Worked like a charm!

    • @Know-How-Now
      @Know-How-Now  3 роки тому

      That's a tough one. You might try making the opening larger. I don't know what kind of material you have to remove, but I've knocked away some mortar with an old screw driver & hammer. Be careful not to damage the valve.

    I just replaced the PP Verve diverter with a non-OEM (Danco found at Hepot)...everything fits perfectly but most of the water does not divert. I installed it with the valve retracted as you mentioned. I don't see any debris/old washer. I removed the showerhead and it improves a bit...maybe 50/50 tub/shower so something is wrong.

    • @Know-How-Now

    Do you have to turn off the water at the main to replace this?

    • @Know-How-Now
      @Know-How-Now  4 роки тому

      It depends. You may have shut off valves to isolate the fixture from the rest of the plumbing. If you live in a building with multiple units, there may be a shut off just below the valves at the shower (oval shaped coverings at the shower valves) .

      Try spraying some penetrating oil on it, wait about an hour & try again. If it doesn't come loose tap on the connection and treat it again, wait, and try again. I use PB Blaster, it smells horrible, but works good. Don't bother with WD40, it's not the best thing for stuck parts.

    Kudos! This is really well done. Our PP 3-handle shower is so old, I believe it was still all original. When using the shower, there was water coming out of the shower and the tub spout. I figure it’s the diverter. Replaced diverter w/ Danco part 15300B, but now I’m not getting water from shower just the spout. I’ll have to replace the seat as well I think so gotta get a seat wrench. But which position is open versus closed? I thought I followed the vid carefully.

      To send water to the shower head the diverter is turned counter clock wise (if you are looking at it from the shower. Are you sure the old washer/oring isn't stuck inside the valve body? Sometimes they stick inside and you have two of them. Also, did you compare the two diverters, maybe you don't have the correct replacement.

      I don't have the resources to give accurate advise on parts for faucets. I recommend either identifying the faucet and consulting the manufacturer or taking the old part to a plumbing supply house.

    what do you do when the shower socket is slightly larger than the diverter bolt? i've tried hammering the socket to shrink it, putting electrical tape inside of it, tried a dime inside of it to decrease diameter. . .nothing is working :(
    the socket is 27/32 but i need one that's probably 24-25/32. . .plumber shops are telling me they don't even make them that size.

      If you don't mind sacrificing the tool here's my thought. How about putting some "liquid metal" on the inside? www.permatex.com/products/adhesives-and-sealants/specialty-adhesives-removers/permatex-liquid-metal-filler/ Devcon also makes some sort of metal repair product. My brother, a machinist says it's great.

      @@Know-How-Now that's a great idea.
      i ended up going to autozone and picking up a 12-point socket wrench, 13/16 (26/32), and then cutting off part of the stem so that i could get the wrench over the nut and it worked!
      then i went to plumbers supply store and got the replacement part and magically the 27/32 socket wrench worked . . .god what a nightmare tho!

    When I turn on my shower head water flows from tub spout as if I'm filling tub for a bath and the shower head at the same time...? Is it the diverter or the tub spout?

    • @Know-How-Now
      @Know-How-Now  3 роки тому

      If you turn a diverter knob on the wall (the type in this video) the problem is likely the diverter. Some tub spouts have a knob that you lift, which is also a diverter. You will only have one diverter.

    Hello - when I turn on the water to my tub, water flows through the tub spout, however when I turn my diverter handle water does not flow through my shower head. I removed the shower head to see if that was the issue but water did not run out the pipe - it dribbled down (nearly no water)
    The day before this happened the water pressure was definitely weak. Do I have a clogging issue or is it possibly the diverter?
    Thank you!!

      Are you sure you have the correct part? Compare the old & new one. Also, around 3:40 - did the old O ring come out or is it still stuck in the valve body = double O ring.

    There was no mention of a plastic nipple which goes over the stem and screws into the flange at one end and something that may be called a bonnet (has threads on inside and outside) st yhe other end, unless I missed it.

    I do handyman work, mostly carpentry, electrical, and drywall. One of my customers broke the handle off her diverter in the shower/tub. I unscrewed the valve and took it to the hardware store. They told me it was a Price Fister, 12 harp stem and sold me the correct handle. I went back to her house, screwed the valve back in and attached the new handle. The handle turns the stem in and out just fine but now no water comes out of the shower! What gives? Thanks

    I wish you would do a video on what I'm looking for. I have an old bathtub that has three handles. One controls the HOT, one controls the COLD, and the middle controls the DRAIN. I need to replace the hot and cold and drain values and handles. There are 11 inches between the hot and cold handles and I do NOT need a spout. There is a spout that comes out of the tub. There doesn't seem to any reason to replace that BUT if I can't buy what I need without a spout, I'll buy it! I can't seem to find what I need. Help! Can someone on here tell me what this unit is called and how do I find one that is not attached to a shower.

    A plumber came and charged money and then told me to open up the back end in another room to replace the cartridge in the diverter. And the tiles on the wall will need to be torn out to get the job done. Making little sense out of this guy's plan, I found this video. The diverter cartridge is designed to be replaced from the front.

    The only comment I have is when using a valve removal wrench it is much easier to place a screw driver through the holes in the wrench and turn it rather than a crescent wrench. It's much more stable.

    If you're having trouble removing a seat, you can hammer a flathead screwdriver into it snuggly, then use a wrench or vice grip to turn the screwdriver. Wasted $30 on the stupid tool only to remove a 30-year-old seat this way.
