Love this video, its not a sterile and clean like other instructional vids. its messy, nothing cooperates, and he hurts himself, just like what i go through when i fix stuff.
I totally agree. I was trying to think how to say the same thing. One thing I was wondering was if it would have been worthwhile to use a wire brush or a Scotchbrite pad to clean the gunk off the valve stem before adding the washers. Since it worked I guess not. Thanks
When removing or installing always have stem in open position so you don't damage washer retainer cup. Also, when old washer is missing look in port (hole) for old washer pieces before you reassemble. Good job!
Thanks Makify1! That was a really down-to-earth video for "regular folks" like us, and the fact that you showed the way these things usually go (like things being stuck etc.) is refreshing; most pros like to show the optimum scenario only, which is never really what you get when you try and do these kinds of things yourself. Thanks again for sharing.
great video from someone who is clearly (a) a regular, intelligent guy that (b) understands the basic laws of physics well enough to explain this process in simple, direct manner without a ton of jargon, so that it makes sense to people coming in with no prior knowledge, like me. i wish all instructional videos were like this! thank you!!
the seals are new...i think i need to change the seats too, but i should ve asked my question after finishing watching your video because right at the end you showed that i should turn on the water before putting the handles back on ...i did this (the latter) and thats what made the water come out...they were turned back on, glad you showed this..you are very very helpful. i haven t changed a fawcett in over 20 years and that was only once.....lol
I'm glad my video was helpful. That means a lot. I'm glad you figured out what was wrong. I know how frustrating it is to go through the whole process, turn the water back on, and it find that the faucet is worse than before! lol
I'm glad you like the video. If the handle is really stuck you'll probably need to use a handle puller. Nearly all hardware stores carry them in the plumbing section and they cost $10-20. Good luck!
I FIXED MY LEAKY FAUCET BY MYSELF! thank you so much for posting this video. Everything worked out GREAT and this leak is gone. I called a plumber who wanted $175 to repair my faucet.
Thank you for posting this video. After buying tools and a brand new stem (mine was in terrible condition) I was able to fix the old faucet on the tub. You video was very informative and very easy to follow. Thanks again!!!
I had this exact issue at home and was totally lost! never touched plumbing pretty much my whole. Your video walked me right through my issue...Thank you so much for spending the time to add this to youtube.
Great job! I'm teaching my son how to do this repair. He thinks it's cool that his mom is showing him plumbing stuff. Thanks for the very through video.
I repaired both of my bathroom's leaky faucets - thanks to you! I did end up springing for the $10.50 to get the faucet handle puller tool though. After struggling with the first one I ran out and bought it. Makes it a snap to get the old handles off.
Great video!! Way to keep going after cutting yourself..shows the viewer that they need to take caution while working with the stems. I hate watching videos where they do a lot of out takes and make projects look easier than they really are. I've done this several times & was actually looking for a seat repair video but watched this one because it was so realistic. Good job!
Thank you so much I was ready to burn the whole house down but your video saved me so much time and stress this is definitely something anyone can do at home great video mate!
Appreciate the down home intelligence and thorough explanation. Now I feel like I can take a look at MY situation and evaluate the scope of the endeavor. Everyone needs to chill about the state of age or cleanliness of the surround. Get a grip - not everyone is "repairing" brand new bathtub fixtures. I specifically avoided choosing clips that looked this unrealistic because I was fairly certain that age brings with it different unexpected challenges that are not strictly mechanical as a new install/replacement. Thanks for keeping it real.
Hey thanks so much for this video! I was able to fix the leaking shower faucet in my home. It was my first time so I didn't know how to do it and your instruction helped me a lot. I did brake the stem when I took the faucet handle out 'cause it was stuck so I ended up replacing the whole stem and a new handle. I also had to buy the valve socket wrench. Total cost: $32 which I think it was worth it and much cheaper than what a plumber would had charged me plus I had a lot of fun doing it myself.
Just wanted to thank you for the video. Not good at fixing things in the house, but video really helped in fixing it. Mine was different, but as you said, same difference. Thanks again.
Great Video! Sorry about the stuck handle and cut hand. I did laugh though because your video has all the mishaps I experienced when I worked on my valves (prior to watching your video). Even though I finished already, I'm glad I found your video because you have some handy wrenches I didn't know about that would have made this job much easier! Thanks for posting!
For this type of faucet with 3 knobs, how would you go about fixing low water pressure, I have low water pressure for the hot water in my apartment, told the maintenance here but for some reason they won't fix. I wanted to do it myself but do you have to cut off the water to do that?, I don't even know where the water cut off valve is? I have not been able to enjoy hot water showers because there is not enough hot water pressure.
Good vid! I'm buying a old home built in 1951 with all the original fixtures and all of them leak. I'll be busy fixing those old stem and seat valves! Alot of Lowes and Homer Depots no longer carry the bits you need but the old Ace Hardware on the edge of town still does! Again, good video!
i need this done, but its my cold water, it happened before we moved in and now its happening again, they had to go through our dining room wall to get to it! Great video!
I checked a couple of other videos and yours was the best. I'm still struggling to get the knobs off. My fingers and hands aren't large enough to push and pull the knob like you did. Any suggestions? Love your video though. Great job. Very very helpful. Thanks so much.
why didn't you fix that big hole by the handle while you had everything off? I think I can do this now watching you. Good idea to cover the drain so things won't fall in there. I'll rember that. Hope i don't cut myself
OMG I could NOT get my knobs off just like you and didn't know what to do! Thank you so much for this video, this saved me hundreds of dollars in plumbing fees!
Glad to know I'm not the only one that has issues when repairing something. Great video. I would have probably tried to fix the broken tile pieces too and wound up at the emergency room.
Awesome video... I have to be honest. I chuckled a little when you couldn't get the handle off, but only because I've been there! Your video was linked under my video of basically the same repair. Do you have your videos monetized? If not, you should! 57 thousand views in about a year would buy you at least one dinner a month!
Low pressure could be caused by a broken stem but might be an issue with the plumbing somewhere else in the building. If the problem is the stem, then you can follow this video but you will need to turn off the water. There is usually a shut-off valve located behind the shower plumbing. Look for a panel or opening on the other side of the wall that the faucet is on. This is sometimes hidden in a closet or behind a panel.
Agreed...and a new first aid kit stocked with band-aids. I specially liked the bloody paper towel. I'd hire this guy. He didn't let a little blood stop him from finishing the job.
Forget what the negative simpletons say my man, this vid was great! It was informative, effecient, well shot, well sait and entertaining. What else should a human request in an how to vid? Anyway, BIG thanks from me, now I dont have to pay a plumber, I can prevent my water waste and cost and save myself a lot of trial and error. Be well.
I really appreciate the reality of this video. The majority of us will probably have the same problems, and these probably wouldn't be thought of or covered in a "scripted" demo video.
Thanks for the video. We have had the same issue ongoing for I don't know how long. We have gone through this whole process several times, but the leak keeps coming back and the washers keep disintegrating. Any advice?
My dad had a friend from work try and fix it and it fixed it but slight dripping and now its getting worse again. What parts can i buy so that i can fix it myself?
My leak is coming out of the Hot Water handle itself, instead of the shower head. I am assuming the repair is the same and will attempt it.. Thanks.. u made it simple. btw.. u have really nice hands, thumbs.. (I used to hire hand models).
Most hardware stores sell whole kits for various stem styles but you can also just buy individual o-rings and seals if you don't need to replace everything.
Great video. That would be my exact situation. Real world old leaking tap. Not really knowing how to do it. Learning as I go. Hurting myself. Great step by step video, good explanation and like ither viewer said, it’s not as sterile as other “professional “ videos, where they demonstrate on a new tap.
so i have a moen single lever temp true or what ever it is called the original cartridge was in and very stuck i was able to get the metal center out of the cartridge but the outer part was plastic in an act of desperation i jammed a 3/4 inch wood bit in put in drill turned in reverse and backed it out! it worked
I have an older hardware on my bathtub. It has two handles which do not have the plastic cover piece over the screw. There is a small hex nut on the backside of the handle. I have tried clockwise and counter clockwise, (gently) to get it loose with out success. Please advise me on how to remove the hot/cold handles. (what do I hold the handle with btw when I crank on the nut?)
One or more of your replacement seals may not be installed properly and aren't sealing off flow or the stem itself isn't tightened down enough for the seals to close completely.
Great video, there was blood, drama, and a good ending. You may just win the award for the oldest, ugliest tub too. lol. I can't talk, mine is at least 50 years old and Pink like the sink and toilet. (original equipment). I'm planning a complete remodeling of the bathroom in a few weeks. Wish me luck.
I'll research a link for you to repair broken ceramic tile around faucets so you can tackle that next, lol. Anyway, great video, realistic for sure, blood was involved, like most of my home improvements. Thanks Again
Great video. Sorry you poked your finger. This is what I call a handy man, not some dumb asses been doing the same few things over and over and most of all wrong and don't even know it. When you question their way of doing things, their famous answer is..."I have been doing this for 30 years and never had any issue."
Does anyone know how to remove the shower spindle if the bonnet nut is not the six point kind that accommodates those special sockets wrenches, my spindle has two flat sides which would probably need a channel lock type wrench, the problem is there is no room.
Nice vid just what I was looking for I have an older home in the country pretty much same bathtub faucet setup and I have a hot water leak and wanted a quick tutorial before I went on to fix it...thanks
i just replaced the faucet stems and all and when i turned the main water back on, the faucets were all the way off nd water was coming out full pressure and also from the shower head...what didnt i do right?
talk about a straightforward.thats how i like it.professional made videos just show clips most of the time instead of real time deals and they skip important factors.irritates me.thanks for the good video...but unfortunately the threads were badly worn so i have to buy a new stem system for it...oh and to those hating on how his tub is so dirty, its a possibility that its just stained or worn.I had to live in a couple of houses with tubs like that.poor people like us have to live with what we have.
Hey thanks for the video mmm i changed all 3 of the stems washers but mm:d now no water comes from the top shower any idea about where that I screwed up
Obviously, water flow is being restricted somewhere the question is where. The most likely answer is that the washer on the center stem wasn't installed properly or was the wrong size.
Hi, Where do you get the washers for these older in wall bathtub faucets. Our building had plumbers in insisting that they had to go in through the wall to remove / replace the unit to fix the leak! No way... I want to do myself. Just point me in the right direction for the washers. Thanks!
my shower faucet handle does not turn on and off the shower. I had 4 different people fix it (whatever they did) only for the problem to return over 2 weeks time. When the shower is on, water comes out of the spout full blast and the shower pressure is dull AND the hot water runs out of hotness really fast like 5 minutes. All stems were replaced and washers too.. what next?
Mine faucet is hard to pull out, i unscrewrd it and twist it off , but im pulling it and tapping it but it dsnt want to come out, i also looked around to see if theirs screws on the side
So, what do you do if the center of the handle stays on and the handle itself breaks off of it? Just had this happen and am now using a vice- grips to turn my water faucet on and off!
Great job! I'm teaching my son how to do this repair. He thinks it's cool that his mom is showing him plumbing stuff. Thanks for the very through video.

Dude nice video. Try wearing some gloves next time. Thanks this video helped out a lot
I'm having the same type of plumbing day! Thanks for sharing....nice to know I'm not alone!!!
lol yep same:)
True!
This is the most realistic tutorial I've ever seen
I would expect more cursing! Lol
True! Blood 🩸 and all 😓
When removing or installing always have stem in open position so you don't damage washer retainer cup. Also, when old washer is missing look in port (hole) for old washer pieces before you reassemble. Good job!
I truly enjoyed the reality of this repair. I learned what I think I'll need and appreciate you spilling blood on my behalf. ;0)

Thank you for making this accessible to someone who previously thought it was rocket science
As a plumber here in Florida I'd say good work! You saved yourself a good bit of coin.
good work, i like the fact that you talk real, and not compicated. i found your video imformational, and amusing thx for sharing.
I repaired both of my bathroom's leaky faucets - thanks to you! I did end up springing for the $10.50 to get the faucet handle puller tool though. After struggling with the first one I ran out and bought it. Makes it a snap to get the old handles off.
this video helped me fix my running faucet, I just finished and no more running water!!! thank you so much!
Thanks for the video, unlike some others, your experience was true to what really happens!!

A down to earth real video on how things are done and what could go wrong do go wrong.
Hey thanks so much for this video! I was able to fix the leaking shower faucet in my home. It was my first time so I didn't know how to do it and your instruction helped me a lot. I gave this video a thumbs up because this is what really happens when your repairing stuff
I don't really think the silicone caulk will help keep the water out with the big chip out of the tile!
Just wanted to thank you for the video. Not good at fixing things in the house, but video really helped in fixing it. Mine was different, but as you said, same difference. Thanks again.
Thanks a bunch, been dealing with a leaky faucet for too long now. Time to take action!

Did a bit of black water come out?
The most helpful video i've seen, thanks Sir
Wow. Your video is awesome and easy to follow. I have the exact same problem. Gonna try and fix it myself!!! Thank you.
Nice video I have the same problem and needed to what tools to use for the stem removal because i also have tile. Thanks.
why didn't you fix that big hole by the handle while you had everything off? I think I can do this now watching you. Good idea to cover the drain so things won't fall in there. I'll rember that. Hope i don't cut myself
Thank you so much! This made my DIY repair so incredibly simple. Good job, sir.
Good call on popping the handle off, this was exactly what I had problems with.
I just love how real this video is. I'm gonna try to tackle this job myself but first I gotta find where to buy that hex socket tool thingy he used.
Thanks very much, this video was really helpful to me, I am grateful for your clear instructions. I hope your finger is all better!
Very helpful video, i was wondering if you could tell me what brand of shower knobs this is?
Thank you for taking the time to speak to us 🇺🇸💕

Excellent video. Do you have anything on the same set up (American Standard) addressing how to replace the diverter valve?

I can't wait until your next video project, how to tile and grout your tub surround!
Did the drip at the end ever stop it looked strong and consistent
rick rhendon I noticed that also.
I have a similar video and noticed that there are no ads on yours. Are not monetizing your videos? I was going to click an ad as a thank you...
did you inspect the corroded valve seat, did you remove any debris in the valve seat ...old washer debris perhaps?
Forget what the negative simpletons say my man, this vid was great! It was informative, effecient, well shot, well sait and entertaining. What else should a human request in an how to vid? Thanks for the video. We have had the same issue ongoing for I don't know how long. We have gone through this whole process several times, but the leak keeps coming back and the washers keep disintegrating. Any advice?
It was still dripping, you needed to replace the valve seat.
where can you get all this parts?
What make and model is your faucet and part number for your replacements
My dad had a friend from work try and fix it and it fixed it but slight dripping and now its getting worse again. What parts can i buy so that i can fix it myself?

Most hardware stores sell whole kits for various stem styles but you can also just buy individual o-rings and seals if you don't need to replace everything.
Great video,What kind of wrenches are those???
Can you still do it without stopping the water supply? I do not have access to stop it
Thank you so much for this! You provide an actual real life repair. So informative. Keep this stuff up!
I'm glad you liked the video!

Great step by step video, good explanation and like ither viewer said, it’s not as sterile as other “professional “ videos, where they demonstrate on a new tap.
You sacrificed your finger to ensure quality and independence among humanity. And for that I thank you.
green water nice, btw did you just guess that it was that handle that was dripping?
2:07 tip stubby screw driver and a quick clamp
place screwdriver like u did put quick clamp behind handle and compress against screwdriver
so i have a moen single lever temp true or what ever it is called
the original cartridge was in and very stuck i was able to get the metal center out of the cartridge but the outer part was plastic
in an act of desperation i jammed a 3/4 inch wood bit in put in drill turned in reverse and backed it out! it worked
Is it important to scratch the bath when taking the o ring off?
I have an older hardware on my bathtub. It has two handles which do not have the plastic cover piece over the screw. There is a small hex nut on the backside of the handle. I have tried clockwise and counter clockwise, (gently) to get it loose with out success. Please advise me on how to remove the hot/cold handles. (what do I hold the handle with btw when I crank on the nut?)
does the water need to be cut off first?
Can you tell me what brand this valve setup is?
Check the seat?
One or more of your replacement seals may not be installed properly and aren't sealing off flow or the stem itself isn't tightened down enough for the seals to close completely.
What about the gaping hole where the tile is missing...lol No shower usage? I think you should have replaced the seat also...did you check it?
Great job bro. I fee very confident I can also do something in the house without having to pay someone. Thanks bro.
I have a faucet exactly like that installed in my shower, probably 15yrs old already. What is the "O" ring #?
Great video. Sorry you poked your finger. This is what I call a handy man, not some dumb asses been doing the same few things over and over and most of all wrong and don't even know it. When you question their way of doing things, their famous answer is..."I have been doing this for 30 years and never had any issue."
Tommy Roberts "Sorry you poked your finger" this dude says Lol why Don't you give it a kissy for him
What size washer. Is that?
What is the tool called for loosening the stem? Can I rent it from Home Depot? I only need it for this job. Are there any other tools you can use?
Does anyone know how to remove the shower spindle if the bonnet nut is not the six point kind that accommodates those special sockets wrenches, my spindle has two flat sides
which would probably need a channel lock type wrench, the problem is there is no room.
Este video es de gran utilidad porque nos enseña cosas utiles en nuestra vida cotidiana que no aprendimos en la Universidad. GRACIAS.-
Nice vid just what I was looking for I have an older home in the country pretty much same bathtub faucet setup and I have a hot water leak and wanted a quick tutorial before I went on to fix it...thanks
How to prevent screws from loosening?
Why were you bleeding?
i just replaced the faucet stems and all and when i turned the main water back on, the faucets were all the way off nd water was coming out full pressure and also from the shower head...what didnt i do right?

Most hardware stores carry them or you could try a plumbing supply store.

So, what do you do if the center of the handle stays on and the handle itself breaks off of it? Just had this happen and am now using a vice- grips to turn my water faucet on and off!
Carole Ann, you can buy replacement handles at most hardware stores, plumbing supply stores, or online.
At the end of the video the water is still dripping little droplets. Thats basically whats happening that id like to fix.
Great job! I'm teaching my son how to do this repair. He thinks it's cool that his mom is showing him plumbing stuff. Thanks for the very through video.
