So that revopoint scanner demands constant Internet connection to compute stuff on the cloud? I thought 3d scanners are offline devices. What a let down.
I wish you could have shown the mesh in Edit mode to see how many vertices, edges and faces there were. That would be interesting to see how much data it created.
A great video. We're still in the early stages of consumer lidar technology. Some people will remember how mediocre phone cameras were 10-15 years ago, and a lot of us get great results with them now. Something similar could happen with lidar. Pop 2 was very impressive with the face scan, but you might have to spend more money to construct 3D models of jewelry because of the difference in scale. A possible workaround for small distances might be visible light photography/photogrammetry, but with more images in future versions of Meshroom, PhotoScan, RealityCapture, etc. Existing software might work if you used a macro lens with a DSLR.
Just got the 13 Pro Max .There's other 3d apps that show better quality, than the one featured. Many compelling reasons to go phone instead of scanner. Would have gone Samsung, but they discontinued their alternative, scanning feature, on the new ones. Apple seems committed to Lidar. Should give developers confidence to further improve the scan softwares for the phone.
Hi I don’t think either one of these would work good for as built recordkeeping. Been working for a survey company for 20 years and knowing surveyors your best bet would be a lidar station. Also you can only collect a small amount of data at a time. We are currently using a DJi 300 drone with a yellow scanner on it which allows us to do a site very accurately in a short period of time. One of the solutions might be good for smaller areas like a handicapped ramp
Ive scanned a Ford F550 recently with my 13pro using Metascan. It does pretty well... but does start to artifact once i get back to where i started (at the front of the truck)
Processing in the cloud?? That’s never a free word Cloud 😂 so what’s the deal with that? We have to pay for our scans? Because there’s NO reason to use a Cloud renderer unless features are only available to there paid cloud service. SO do we have to pay for better scanning or is my duel A6000 ok?

On their documentation, it says it's using Alibaba Cloud Server to process data but don't talk about the cost. I'll ask them soon about that.
It doesn't make much sense that the scan would look detailed when textured, even responding properly to changes in the 3D lighting, and then magically have no detail underneath. Are you sure it's not using a normal map to create the detail that stops being applied when you remove the textures? Because if so and you really need the model itself to be high-poly, it's a pretty simple process to bake the normal map in and make it part of the mesh.
it's hot garbage. apply any money you thought about spending on the rev point and apply it to either an iphone, or a mac mini (to run Object Capture) with whatever camera you would like to use.

thanks for a very informative video. Just tried EM3D today - quite good but I am keen to know if things have progressed today with better apps for the iPhone to capture faces in 3D with the rear cameras.
Interesting video but there are far better iPhone 3d scanning apps, Heges and Scanniverse to name but a few. Could you scan a lego block with the POP 2 please? The iPhone LIDAR is unable to scan one in my experience yet the front facing true depth camera can with no problem.
@MrStoofus What did you use to edit the mesh and did you get the hollow underside and cylindrical feature inside with it? Did you scan free hand or have the phone fixed and use a turntable? Have you tried Heges or scandy pro for true depth scans?
iPhone 13 has the worst TrueDepth scanning of any apple product ever made. So this is a semi accurate test. But not completely fair. But not unfair lol. The iPhone 13 pros moved the true depth camera to change the notch. The result is that the sensors are closer together and less parallax follows. But not a single comment on price? A dedicated, single purpose product for $800 US or a multi-purpose product that comes in at maybe 75% of the quality but with some post touch ups, can probably get really close to equal quality. If you're doing 3D prints for your own customers, you'd probably want something with even more accuracy than the Revopoint Pop 2 anyway - as you mentioned, the captures were not perfect and when you only have one chance to capture a moment, would you really trust the Pop2? So, IMHO, the Iphone 13 is perfect for a consumer. It cost me $300 to upgrade from my Iphone 11 and I get a LiDAR scanner that gets me close, and I still have maps to find my way home and make a call. A little Blender tweak and I'm 100% there. Or, I could spend $800, still need Blender post and have no other use for it. If I'm going to make money off of it, I'm going to invest in a professional product but they run ~1500 to infinity. any information on it's performance scanning larger objects like homes or full rooms?
The iPhone will actually be better for this because LIDAR scanners are designed to operate in large spaces, that's why they are attached the top of self driving cars. The Revopoint is better for smaller objects. Thanks for watching :)
