Shoegaze is more about layering sounds... like My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive. Post-rock is about dynamics.. quite to loud, single layers to multiple layers.. and using those to create soundscapes and atmospheres. But, yea the genres are closely linked together, and many bands definitely crossover and can fit in both.
I think a bigger distinction is that shoegaze tends to be more riff-oriented, have more "pop" song structures (shorter 3-4 minute verse-chorus songs and such) and tends to go wilder with noise in their guitar tones by layering in more distortion, modulation and such. In comparison post-rock tends to be more formless and meandering. There is definitely a lot of overlap between the styles though and there are probably countless bands that you could accurately apply both labels to.
This is such an interesting take on the series! Post Rock definitely sounds different from Classic I believe! Awesome to combine all of these sounds into one video!

for drums maybe the Tama superstar classic pack, Sabian HH13 Evolution hi hats, paiste 2002 20" ride, paiste 900 series 16", paiste 101 18" and 14"
$1500 for Drums? That could be difficult/very limited
@@toadetteremotewithwiimotio3330 that's what makes it fun
@Johnny Boy when there's drum sound likes the budget is often £2000
I watched this yesterday. It's so good I'm watching it again today.
Sound like Opeth or a Doom Band like YOB
Bongripper!!
Hell yeah to YOB.
Crowbar. Kirk has one of the most iconic tones in Doom/sludge.
@@jakeybball The bad thing is Andertons don't stock Randall, but there's the Orange CR120
Forget looking up UA-cam playlists of "Post Rock", I'd rather listen to Rabea and Matt play their stuff all day. I don't know if it's Post Rock or whatever that is. All I know is those short little numbers sounded absolutely brilliant. Reminds me a lot of some Japanese bands I've listened to, like "Mass of the Fermenting Dregs" or something like them. Is that "shoegaze" ? Oh gawd, i have no idea about pigeon-holing. All I know is that was lovely :)
I mean, I know it's just jamming and you basically make it up as you go, but man, that sounds awesome.
no, it sounds awful! it's not even close to Ultimate Post Rock Rig's tone and i love Ultimate Post Rock Rig
In keeping with the post rock theme, could you guys do a sound like IF THESE TREES COULD TALK? I reckon they're one of the best out there.
probably as close to a sound like feeder or bloc party as i am gonna get. please do a sound like the police guitar and bass rigs...
luv the vids keep up the good work
Sounds ace, but I’d really suggest a fuzz for post rock. You can get most of the flavors of the genre with these rigs but it’s hard to get those crescendos and synthy lead tones without a fuzz. For those looking for one on a budget both Mono and Mowgli make use of an old danelectro fab tone which can be found used for suuuuuuper cheap.
sounds like explosions in the sky after this?
Not even watched yet but been hoping for this for ages! Exciting stuff!!
That last song/excerpt was amazing. My jaw dropped. Bea you need to get Matt over to record that for Grinding Gears 3. Holy crap.
Can't agree more
what would you name that last song/excerpt?
@William Allison Win The Day
how about it?
@Saki Miyu looks good to me
It wasn't THAT amazing, besides it was not even close!
the rhythm guitarist used a Reverend Club King 290, Vox AC30 and an EHX Electric Mistress on this song
and the lead guitarist used a Fender Jaguar with an Orange TH30, a Keeley D&M Drive and a Walrus SLO
GFI Specular Tempus is a great delay/reverb combo for any ambient-oriented music. It sounds so good and it isn't even expensive!
You guys should do sound like Brian Setzer
Stray Cats is an easy sound like
Gretsch G5420
Fender Blues Junior
and probably a cheap delay set on a slap back setting
Fantastic guys, thanks. Plus Rabea picked my guitar so thrilled and inspired. Cheers.
Best Sound Like ever! Next do: Godspeed You Black Emperor BY BUSTING!
@G. V. Q Yeah they would have to get Pete in and do 3 rigs. Saw them live and the sound was incredible!!!
WRONG! Metallica without busting is the best sound like ever cos it has over 16,000 likes on it
this sounded nothing like Ultimate Post Rock Rig and i love Ultimate Post Rock Rig
i disagree, this is the worst sound like ever, it's not even close
4:00 I see what you did there :). Genius editing as always...!
How to grow a beard like Matt's | By Busting The Bank
This whole episode sounds like what I used to do when I first got a reverb and delay. It's just fun!
Plz do The Misfits, ideally both eras.
Sounds just like Heaven and All from Sound City - Real to Reel! Love it! Always was a big fan of huge, delayed and full of reverb overdriven sound
but it sounds nothing like Ultimate Post Rock Rig, which sucks cos thye're my favorite band of all time
The Walrus SLO reverb would’ve been perfect for this, still sounded awesome though
that would've worked better considering that's what their rhythm guitarist used back in the day
and while this did sound awesome it sounds nothing like Ultimate Post Rock Rig, which is a shame cos they're my favorite band of all time
wrong, it sounded awful
not even close to Ultimate Post Rock Rig's tone
This is a legitimately some of the best music on UA-cam by a long shot. Loving every second and think we beed a sequel/revisited? X
Do sound like ultimate modern rig BY BUSTING THE BANK !!!!
THAT'D BE SICK!
Ultimate Modern Rig is my favorite band of all time!
I saw the notification for this at work and I rushed home to watch. Didn't disappoint. Definitely need to pick me up a Gretsch like that though!
But you didn't buy a post or a rock. What a joke.
and worse, this sounded nothing like Ultimate Post Rock Rig, it sucks as they're my favorite band of all time
Saki Miyu underrated comment
@Pancake How the hell is it underrated when i said basically the exact same thing and got 482 likes for it?!
@@KeeperOfPoops The thing is you only said they're your favorite band of all time, you never said anything about it not sounding like them
so therefore you never said the same thing.
@@widowmaker5544 He's obviously just jealous because I beat him to it and got all the praise!
I loved how this sounded. You 2 could have kept playing. Im listening at work and it was perfect!
Y’all joke but I’d definitely buy your post rock album that first ditty was IMMENSE
what would you name their first ditty?
@William Allison i'd name it Voices In The Breeze
@Saki Miyu it sounds good, i like it
i misread that as "first titty" 🤣
Goodness lads, that was fantastic. The ending jam was amazing.
what would you name the ending jam?
@William Allison "Win The Day"
@@sakimiyu4169 Looks good to me!
Sound like Alice in Chains BY busting the bank.
G&L Rampage
Friedman JC Head & cab
Dunlop Rotovibe (for rooster)
Dunlop JC95 (for man in the box solo)
MXR M222 (for man in the box)
Chorus pedal (for Hung on a Hook)
Compressor (Also for Hung on a hook)
Ultimate Grunge without busting the bank
@Frankie Concepcion THAT WOULD BE AWESOME! Ultimate Grunge is my favorite band of all time!
@William Allison Excuse you, you dolt... it's not a band, it's a genre of music.
@@widowmaker5544 you'd need a rig for William Duvall too.
Awesome as always. Ultimate drone/stone/jam band rig. With a heavy emphasis on Earthless! It's not my grandmas's last wish, but it would be awesome. Great job once again!!
that would be sick! Ultimate drone/stone/jam band rig is my favorite band of all time!
Hell yes, next do shoegaze without busting the bank.
Great sounds guys....I own a Way huge Pork Loin payed £49 for it....great sounding overdrive pedal, I found out that it's got two extra controls that are inside the guts of the pedal that need a watch maker's screw driver to adjust,
love this. gonna beg once again for you to do sonic youth--would be a fitting follow up
yeah, personally i prefer them doing actual artists and not stuff a genre of artist would use
Check out a channel called, slackerVK. Tons of cool vids. Several SY songs. Bunch of Dino Jr., Polvo, Sebadoh... loads of other stuff, too.
@@thenotsoguitarguy9429 thanks for the suggestion
i hate this, it sounds nothing like Ultimate Post Rock Rig. which is a shame cos they're my favorite band of all time!
they should've gotten a Les Paul for the rhythm rig but keep the vox amp, and replace the pedals with an EHX Green Russian Muff, MXR Dynacomp, EHX Small Clone and a Walrus SLO Reverb
and for the lead rig a Fender Player Jaguar, Orange CR60C, Xotic BB Preamp and a Fender Reflecting Pool. that would've been much closer
Probably top 5 video you 2 have done. free range just a style good job
