Frankly, I don't know if silent hill 2 even needs a remake, a proper remaster to make the game more playable sure. But a remake would entail "improving" the clunky mechanics of the original, which somehow loses from its "survival" aspect and drives it more into "action" (ala resident evil). The combat was never the focus because it sucked and was really shallow. "Fixing" the camera controls by making them more similar to the resident evil remakes I feel like takes away from the game itself. My hopes are that the camera is the only thing that changes, though changing the camera does fundamentally change a lot of aspects of the combat (meaning that other changes are warranted). I've just recently completed another playthrough of Silent Hill 2 on PC to get a feel for it once more. If I've got to say anything, I think we already got our "remake" in the form of Signalis which released like a year ago. It has SH2 all over it, while being its own thing, I recommend it. I'm trying to have low expectations for the remake considering how much weight is being put on it, the decade+ hiatus in the franchise doesn't help.
@@pantommy yeah that’s my entire point it’s not resident evil like The only real downside to the original was the actual action the only real way to improve it is either do the dead space way or re way and then went with a mix of both and saying all we have seen is jsut a combat trailer we still have 0 knowledge to even say if action will be noticeable because all we know they could have shown the only gameplay in the game It’s 23 years old coming on 24 years soon a remake or remaster are both completely justified, does it still play and look good today? Depends but saying how old it is it is justified
@@RandomName12345 I think borrowing stuff from dead space is more appropriate. Dead Space is really interesting because it managed to put so much tension in combat regardless of the fact that you're pretty much a killing machine mowing through countless necromorphs. The fact that you had to be accurate with your shots and not simply aim for the head added a lot of tension. I can see this being implemented in Silent Hill, and the combat trailer does show enemies reacting in different ways to being shot in the legs. But I don't think it should be on the scale of Dead Space either. Each enemy should be tough to kill, James is just a normal dude after all. I especially don't like how the melee is portrayed, makes James look like some kind of pro batter or a navy seal trained in CQC. There isn't much encumbrance in his movement, which makes the action seem a lot more bombastic than it should be. Either way, the combat from the original had to change and making the first trailer a combat trailer wasn't a bad thing, it's literally the worst part of SH2. Just that.. I want it to be unique to its own identity, it can borrow from other games in similar genres but it should have its own thing going for it.
Saying it looks like a fan game isn't quite accurate. Fans would at least know that "you reap what you sow" is completely missing the point of the fucking game. Silent hill isn't about punishment. It's about trauma.

@@Setogayamari remasters and remakes are two different things. What you described is a remaster, something like the Last of Us remaster or the Metroid Prime remaster. A remake is built from the ground up and is usually marketed as the DEFINITIVE way of experiencing the game that’s it based on.

@@snakeeater6738 No, It's that every third person game nowadays is just a over the shoulder style with no thought put into it. @@jackal2484 Okay? PS1 horror games all looked the same with tank controls. And it’s not a secret this remake is due to RE’s success. And what do you mean all enemies look generic?? They it really look like the original models updated. Just say you didn’t play the original 🙄
The problem/s are the atmosphere (which seems to be down to scrapping fixed camera angles etc. removing cinematic quality and tension) and the hordes of enemies for the 'modernized combat' system. A single enemy in silent hill should feel as threatening as the groups of monsters they show in this trailer. The original games combat was labored and clunky by design whilst emphasizing conservation of your ammo/equipment. I hope they manage to understand somewhat what made SH a great franchise and bring some of that into the upcoming projects, as if all of these upcoming franchise releases fail to live up to expectations Konami will end up killing the series for good.
the original silent hill 2 had a trailer that misrepresented it just the same as this with a focus on the bloodshed and combat. the game does have plenty of spots that throw just as many enemies at you as seen here, the lying figures and nurses were often grouped just like in this trailer. i'm not too worried
Sorry what hordes? There was 4 enemies on screen maximum, even the original had multi-enemy encounters. You see a lot of enemies because they are showcasing the combat, doesn't mean it's horde based. "The original games combat was labored and clunky by design". No it wasn't, it was like that because of technical limitations, if it was a well thought design they would've kept it. It just was typical survival horror shitty combat, abandoned by most survival horror franchises that involve combat. The only important thing they have to nail is that you don't feel OP and the enemies feel like a threat instead of making us go on power trips like what happens in dead space, a game full of scary monster which aren't scary because you are a war machine with an arsenal of sci-fi weapons.
@@aldoiurillo506 I didn't mean hordes of enemies at once, I was referring to the amount of enemies in the game total and the seeming increase in mobs. Not like a zombie horde ala L4D/Days gone. The combat was 'labored and clunky by design', I doubt it was due to 'technical limitations' in the PS2 era (the same gen RE4 was made on and MGS2/3) this might have held water for SH1 but the fact they had kept this style of combat through all the major Team Silent games shows that it was intentional as it made you feel vulnerable and suited the games. I even remember this being a talking point for the devs/games media at the time. The original games did have moments where you fought upwards of 3-4 monsters in one area but you were best avoiding and evading them or saving your ammo/best melee weapons for those moments. This trailer gives me the exact Dead Space type of feeling with the over the shoulder camera angle RE4 style combat. The flashing QTE's don't help either with overall presentation. Being a combat trailer like you said I'd be inclined to cut it slack, but like many on here say a 'combat trailer' just isn't the best representation of what SH2 should be. I want this game to be good just like the next person but you've got to call things as you see them.
One of the actual coffin nails would probably be the supposed "fans", complaining about inconsistent and contradictory aspects, not giving the developer any room or chance to develop something actually good, complaining about short clips in trailers that don't actually give them any idea of the game, downvoting trailers which would probably just send Konami into panic mode and wanting to pressure the developers to second-guess each of their decision and start changing things shortly before release based on some fan's delusional ramblings and out of touch criticisma online. Some supposed "fans" could be the series' biggest curse and downfall. Being angry at Konami's past decisions may be warranted, but actively sabotageing every chance to create something worthwhile by overanalysing, misunderstanding and irrationally criticizing every short clip to make the developers second guess each and every decision seems more like an active participation in destroying the series into a state probably much worse than without their active engagement. Pretty spectactural, honestly. Quick time events by themselves don't mean sh*t. Visceral combat was an integral part of the original games, sometimes emphasized and focused on in the original trailers. The lack of combat as being an equivalent of more fear is a superficial understanding of the game mechanics and should be out-dated at least after From Software has shown how combat-heavy games can be scary and bordering on survival horror. Focusing on the "next-genness" of the graphics is aching to juvenile undeveloped critics only turned on by texture resolution in the latest EA games. James looking like Leon is probably the result of the developers changing thing based on the delusional "fan" criticism that James looked "old" in the first trailer. As I mentioned earlier in the comment, developers actually trying to follow some of these delusional "fan" criticisms could be thw actual downfall of this game and possibly other Silent Hill projects.
yea your right, the controls suited it back then as most horror /survival games were like that, also idk why they couldn't include some of the monsters from later games...
When I watched the trailer I was so confused on what is everyone shitting on the trailer for. I'm currently in the middle of the original game. But the big thing on "this doesn't look like Silent Hill" I don't understand cause no one have been reinforcing that statement. Graphics look great and yes the player character could have improvement, but instead of a combat trailer they should have released a gameplay trailer not focused on combat as much. Resident Evil had fixed camera angels and no one was complaining that its over the shoulder in the remake. Though there is a surge of people that make it seem there are more fans now than before.
I actually played SIlent Hill 2 before the announcement of the remake though. I don't think the remake looks bad but I do think they need to higher the quality of the animations and not focus on combat so much as that would defeat the purpose of silent hill and its desperate hopeless feeling. Visually though it's gorgeous they definitely got the atmosphere right.
@@darthcalculus6002 The enemy animations seem good enough, should have a little more reactivity. Before I say this, I want to make clear: Yes, you could mash in the original SH2 to get out of grabs. Great. This team thought nothing of putting a giant, ugly flashing X prompt on the screen when this occurs, in one of the most atmospheric and immersive, and HUDLESS games ever made. if they are this oblivious about the little things, imagine the baffling decisions that will be made across the board at all levels. I can't wait to see how they handle the storylines, in particular, how bad they botch Angela's tale. Silent Hill one was lightning in a bottle. Konami has no clue about this series. They basically took all the young, talented misfits they couldn't fit to other projects and gave them rope to hang themselves. I'm sure if SH flopped, they would all have been fired. But it succeeded, so they gave them rope with SH2, and they did it again. Every SH game from 1-4 were just various levels of Konami not interfering. This will never happen again because now we have Konami, who simply owns the IP, handing it off to a developer who's track record is frankly garbage. They have no nuance like Team Silent did. This is a doomed project. Pull the Lever!
I'm happy to see someone in this comment section actually knows their Team Silent history and details and nuances and actually knows and gets it. I'll never understand how they think it's ok to remake a game like this. SH2 had so many little factors at play, so many little specific things to it's development that you could never ever recreate, beyond the very special and specific minds and mindset that was the weirdo misfit devs of Team Silent SPOILERS: I don't know how they think they'll be able to recreate a one take voice acting scene from someone who had recently lost a loved one and was actually crying during the recording. Or how they plan to recreate the performance of someone who was actually going through a divorce during the development of this game. It all just greatly upsets me and I hate that this game could be what SH2 could become in the general public as a more accessible version of the game, even though the original game has one of the best most accessible PC ports ever made by fans. I hope the internet somehow convinces people to at the very least play the original first.

@@jackal2484 Okay? PS1 horror games all looked the same with tank controls. And it’s not a secret this remake is due to RE’s success. And what do you mean all enemies look generic?? They it really look like the original models updated. Just say you didn’t play the original 🙄

They need to change James’s hair / character model from scratch. Literally looks just like Leon but worse.
he got that contemporary Pyrocynical hair 💀☠💀☠💀☠
I mean they literally look super similar in the original too. I think he looks fine tbh.
Leon and James look similar already don’t see what your problem is.
As I mentioned earlier in the comment, developers actually trying to follow some of these delusional "fan" criticisms could be thw actual downfall of this game and possibly other Silent Hill projects.
yea your right, the controls suited it back then as most horror /survival games were like that, also idk why they couldn't include some of the monsters from later games...
lol gotta love how now suddenly everyone is a Silent Hill 2 fan and played the original 😂
The gun animations are a bit basic, like the hand cocking back alone and not affected the rest of the characters arm or body. Also fully agree on why didn't they show a normal gameplay or story trailer instead of a combat focused trailer.
@@darthcalculus6002 I played the og and I gotta say the trailer looks really rough , like the sound design is really bad ,the animations are sluggish and rough + QTE are dogshit nowadays but honestly I knew that would happen because of bloober team they were way over their heads thinking they could Remake one of the most iconic horror games that exist

It seriously seems like these texture resolution obsessed fake Silent Hill fans want it to fail so they could get attention by complaining, because it is a key aspect of their online personality.
@@udopadrik9971 no? you got it wrong my guy, the graphics arent the issue, the issue is that the animations and the game itself looks jank, the graphics arent perfect but they're alright, graphics doesn't really matter when the game itself is shit.

I cannot wait to replay the original game when this comes out. It looks like a fucking Resident Evil game. Silent Hill is supposed to be different it's not a Resident Evil game. It's so bad it's so bad do the guns sound so underpowered. I remember in the original game the guns sounded so powerful it was insane. It made you want to hold on to them until the boss fights. They need to realize that they need to put the original cameras back in like it works for Resident Evil but it won't work for Silent Hill
Nah, the pistol in the original sounded like shit too.
The guns sounded like fucking ass in the original, what form of misplaced nostalgia is this 😭
How the pistol sounds is the least of everyone's worries. Here I'm hoping they don't pull a Resident Evil 3 Remake on SH2, and make everything except for the graphics and maybe combat worse.
@@banipoltergeistWhat kind of response is this? The OP is worried that they'll mess up the game. Which is a completely understandable thing.
Just saying the copy/paste response of "You can play the original any time you want" that is just dismissing the fans of Silent Hill, adds nothing. He has a right to say his piece considering Konami is just milking a popular game franchise, if The newly released Last Message is anything to go by.
@@banipoltergeist Oh, I see. My bad. It's just that I've seen this same kind of response under every comment that criticizes or points out problems with a remake or a new game in a franchise. I thought you were one of those.
I'm not saying it's bad. It's just that, telling someone to simply go play the OG when they heard about a remake of a game they loved/liked greatly, and then they see that it has problems, isn't the right kind of response, and offers nothing. It's just dismissing someone entirely.
God shut up
I'm happy to see someone in this comment section actually knows their Team Silent history and details and nuances and actually knows and gets it. I'll never understand how they think it's ok to remake a game like this. SH2 had so many little factors at play, so many little specific things to it's development that you could never ever recreate, beyond the very special and specific minds and mindset that was the weirdo misfit devs of Team Silent
SPOILERS:
I don't know how they think they'll be able to recreate a one take voice acting scene from someone who had recently lost a loved one and was actually crying during the recording.
I just hope it's not gonna be just running and shooting. SH2 is supposed to be slow paced.
what i disliked is how it's much more blunt and less subtle it seemed. silent hills: 1, 2, & 4 created a world with an ethereal, unique, feel to it, that made it stand out amongst most horror media. it wasn't bothered worried at all about player missing details, it felt like it was made as a passion project for its artistic creators rather than to appease a contemporary audience. i get the sense this will feel like a lot of triple a games...
It looks like a Resident Evil Spinoff unfortunately
So did the original Silent hill 2

Not exactly looking for a gory bloodbath in a Silent Hill game, but from a technical standpoint, it just looks extremely dated and arcade-like.

A bigger budget doesn’t always produce a better game. Guys you can’t re invent the wheel but you can improve it. The same logic applies here. This is a remake not a new game. The point was to modernize the game and give it a make over not produce an entirely different game. In my opinion as long as they stay true to the story the game will be nostalgic and true to the original. Either way it will be an improvement to the original which is dated now.
