People in Poland (usually) are not used to being asked ''how are you'' by some a stranger. Thats why they are confused when u ask them. It's also worth noting that in Poland we have a practice that when we address strangers or people we know, but they are not our friends, we should use the form Mr./Mrs.[ (Pan/Pani) not You.
Jak się masz ?(PL) How are you(ENG) - for friends
Jak się Pan/Pani ma? - for strangers or people we know but they arent friends
But it is still worth bearing in mind that people in Poland are not used to such question as how are you from stranger.

Hi, Pyzy Flaki Gorące serves a traditional Praga food - pyzy. It is also traditional in other areas of Poznań, but it was „it” food for Bazar Różyckiego, which you passed by on the video. It was a prosperous place in 60/70/80, even 90. Now, it is a small market. And as for Brzeska Street - it can be dangerous ;) it is gonna be revitalized in next 10/15 years. Glad you saw Praga! It is really interesting part of Warsaw but very neglected by the city… greetings from Praga ;)

Once I had a girlfriend from Praga. After a date I walk her back home through the most spooky streets full of winos, pimps, local hooligans, moonshine traders. And... never felt unsafe or even uncertain. When someone asked me some change I politely explained that I was a poor student with no income but I could give a dime or two. Then I was offered a gulp of cheap wine strait from the bottle. The golden rule about Praga was to not show any sign of disgust and feel as you belong to this place instead.
The band is to commemorate local tradition - Warsaw had its own songs sung with Warsaw's accent on the streets and backyards by such a bands. Many of them was from Praga. The ultimate songwriter and singer was Stanisław Grzesiuk, you can find his pieces on YT. My favourite are "Ballada o Czarnej Mańce", "Bal na Gnojnej", "Nie masz cwaniaka nad Warszawiaka" ("Black Mary Ballade", "The Party on the Gnojna Street", "There's no Bigger Smartass as Warsaw Guy". If I can compare him to any English singer it would be George Formby.
"Świetnie" means excellent or great which is much better than just good or fine.
Have a good time in Wawa (as we call this lil town).

Many of the old buildings were sloppyly reconstructed after the war. Cheap plaster was used and its decorative details were stripped off. Now they are slowly being renovated and restored to their splendor. There is "a village" in the very heart of Warsaw. You find Jazdów. You must see this place

first of all, I sincerely congratulate you on your perfect Polish pronunciation, I am truly impressed. and I'm not sweet-talking.. you should keep learning, you are doing great! second: the girl at 28:28 responded "świetnie!" which is "great" or "amazing!" not just "good" :) third: at 29:15 it was a place with very traditional Polish cuisine dishes , it said above the entrance "pyzy i flaki gorące" , gorące = hot, pyzy = kind of potato dumplings with stuffing, usually meat, but completely different to famous 'pierogi'.. and flaki (or flaczki) , another very traditional polish stew / soup made of tripe :D if you are brave enough try 'flaki' next time when you're in Warsaw.. flaki / flaczki is served at EVERY Polish wedding party.. you should definitely go to old Praga bazaar called "Różyckiego", but be careful of pickpockets in the crowd.. you will find there old ladies / babushkas ;) serving fresh 'pyzy' straight from the pot, very Warsaw dish.. you should find place with flaki there, too .. and one TV series recommendation , if you have the opportunity you should absolutely watch "The king" - (Król - in Polish), is shows Warsaw, especially Praga and Różycki bazaar before the war, 1937-38.. it's about the Jewish mafia ruling the city.. it's like Polish "Peaky Blinders".. similar vibe.. top notch stuff! btw.. some people claim that Warsaw's Old Praga is becoming more and more like Camden Town in London, artsy, bohemian and authentic... cheers mate !

Bryndza started to be produced by Vlachs. Vlachs settled a large part of the Carpathians. They reached the Polish Tatra Mountains and the Beskids. Polish highlanders are their descendants. That is why bryndza is typical for Bulgarians, Hutsuls, Lemkos and our Highlanders.

I enjoy your off the beaten track guides to various places (Warsaw, Krakow, Golden Sands, Riga). I am from Warsaw. It is also worth seeing some more, maybe less random sights in Warsaw, though still off track for many tourists. I'd recommend you seeing: Cytadela (Russian Tsar era fortification), the Neons' Museum (the only Neon Museum in Europe that has Cold War neons - co-run and co-funded by a Brit); the beach on the Praga side of the river; the international venders on the left-side embankment; ul. Katowicka and ul. Francuska in Saska Kepa (Praga) - examples of modernistic prewar architecture, plus a bunch of restaurants, and eateries; the garden roof at BUW - the Warsaw University Library; the Arch of the EU placed smack in the middle of nowhere - a field south of Warsaw, plus the most tacky architecture on a hotel nearby. All this just to name some. All the very best!

"Ile to kosztuje?" means "How much does it cost?- if you just want to know the price of a product. But if you want to ask how much you need to pay for the product/products you are buying, ask "Ile płacę?" meaning "How much do I owe/pay?". "Po ile?" is in street market slang, do not use it everywhere. "Witam, jak się masz?" you can use when speaking to the people you know by first names, it's informal and most people will just ignore it (like the girl in the video), or surprised (like the man a few seconds later). The policemen answered politely because they deal with foreign tourists in the streets on a daily basis so they know the language issues and accept them. "Witam (welcome)" you use when starting a speech to a group. Use "dzień dobry" to everyone or "cześć" to young people. (17.35), its a monument to the Praga street folk band.

  • @2mek99

English/American sentences and culture translated to Polish might not work. Poles are less direct and some of these small talks might be misunderstood. The girls "attacked" by "jak się masz?" might think you try to pick her up :-)
The answer might be a cloudy face.

Praga Warsaw people have ther own mentality wich prefer more calmly way of living not as buisness and rush driven people living on western side of Wistula river. Migration of people from other cities and small towns to the capital of Poland mostly for work after 2WW made them a bit defensive and sometimes aggressive. As you can see most of the buildings are old because they were not destroyed in war. Rebuilding and expantion of destroyed Warsaw was prioritised on western side and most of the east city Praga was left behind as expantion of the city was made. You may say Praga is poor district of Warsaw concidering how it looks, mostly by lack of restoration. The most dangerous place in Praga was Dudziarska street is the 90s, today is abandent. But it is good to avoid Brzeska, Stalowa, Konopacka streets after midnight. Also you might find no lack in Mokotów or Śródmieście. Today it is a quite safe city but if you want trouble as a tourist you must look for it with a candle. Overall Warsaw is a big city.
