A drill has definitely worked better on our sands compared to broadcasting. RC Tecumseh, RC Big Rock, and Forestburg have established nicely with the herbicide applications pre plant, a mowing and another herbicide application later in the year. Even in the drought the switchgrass thrived with proper techniques.
Depending on the year, a drill will work better for sure! There are times the drill spacing will hurt you tho, compared to the more even spacing of broadcast thru frost seeding. The switch acts more as a smother crop when not drilled, initially. Just depends on how wet the spring is and how weeds were controlled prior to seeding.
Once again great video Jeff. Will be planting a bunch of switch myself this year for screening and access to stands. Working with such a small plot surrounded by flat Ag land that is usually planted with canola, my issue is having enough timber and cover once season starts up here in Northern Alberta after harvest and the fields are dirt.
With the weather we just had here in Alberta a week or two ago Im praying winter die off isn't to bad. 🙏 We had finally started to see wildlife on the small 10 acre plot after some timber management and decades of neglect.
Jeff, I would like to see a video on your thoughts about Ag food sources at the opposite end of a property, and plots at the other end. Ag land to the East. Plots are West, heavy conifer bush. Property is a long 100 acres of (conifer) bush to the East. Nothing but the same after plots West. Try to keep things short, hope that makes sense. Thanks
Hi Tim, so many factors to consider! Generally you want the food closer to the AG tho. The food plots hold the deer until dark and then they transfer out to AG after dark. Works very well! The majority of the time that is best, but not always. Then maybe smaller hunting plots on the opposite end for daylight buck use. By keeping big food on opposite ends you limit important depth of cover availability
Thanks Jeff. I was thinking from watching your videos. That would be pretty close to what you might say other than the small plots. Would be a good topic, must be more ppl in this situation, and gotta be a way to make things work. Thanks again
Love your videos! very informative. I hope you do a follow up on this next year to see how the weed control saves help the switch. What do you recommend for WV? Southern or northern blend?
Hilarious! Is it really a day in the woods if you don’t fall down. When hitting broadleaf with 24D do you spray it while everything still standing? Then mow it down?
Amen Naomi 😁 Yes...but I try to hit it when it is young in the spring...not even 10" high. So depending on how thick the weed base is there may be even enough soil exposure to plant. But I never mow unless starting more mid Summer.
For your designs with access along rural country roads with little traffic, would truck stopping/cranking not spook dear on food plots or bedding areas close to road?
Hi Ryan...I would definitely park somewhere else during the season! They will figure out fast what that is and pattern you. The vehicle traffic typically doesn't bother them, even if infrequent
It's not in the switch...but in the ground or nearby seed heads, typically. We have it for example in portions of our switchgrass...but not most of it. Very site specific. We take it out with Quincloric. At this point in the season you can hit a new planting with 5 ounces per acre...
This timing is perfect because I have a failed switchgrass plot that's terrible was gonna stay it all killing everything and starting over ... I didn't know what to do??
As long as you see switch every foot or so, I wouldn't give up! Simazine before spring greenup. Mow early May. Then 1.5 pints of 2-4D per acre in June for broadleafs. 5-7ounces of quincloric per acre for Foxtail in June...
i see you sell "deer fence" screening. is that any better or worse than switch? i see its cheaper if i just wanted to screen off a foot plot or access location . Great blooper by the way
😁 Thanks Mike! The deer Fence is taller than switch...but an annual. You have to beware of some off the rally tall advertised screenings out there, as they grow very tall but have zero leaves...only cane poles, at eye level. You can see right thru them. Our Deer Fence you can't see through when planted 12-15' wide. Should be around 8-10' high and very yhick
I'm glad i live alone i fell out of my shower a couple of weeks ago that hurt as a 54 year old man thank God my son wasn't anywhere around to put me on the internet no one would want to see my naked ass falling out of the shower😂
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 Woohoo!!!! I'm upset the seasons over, but I'm so excited to start all the post season work for next season. I just don't know what I should do now ... predator control and hunt coyotes or start tsi projects 🤔
I love the switch grass tunnels!!! They work so great!! Nice bloopers Dylan!!
They are awesome!
Thanks Jeff, that video was what I was looking for. Much appreciated can’t wait for spring
Thanks Mike!! It feels pretty good lately...feels just like Spring!

I had great luck with planting switch the last couple of years! Took care of the weeds first then broadcast it in the earthway
Nice Drew! It's pretty cool proof if you take care of the weeds!
Love it! Proves we all fall down!
😂It sure does!
Thanks Jeff, I’m going to grab a bag of switch from you real soon.
You are very welcome...really appreciate you!
Dylan is a savage! There's no way these early commenters watched until the end...
Lol 😁
Surprise bloopers at the end, lol
I tuned in for the blooper... worth it :D
Haha 😁
Dylan putting a leak the levee on bloopers....there must be more. Take it easy out there Jeff!!
Haha...thanks Alex 😁 Not many, that one was staged, lol

Can't wait to get mine planted!
Very soon 👍

Thanks Scott...you would be in the Southern blend zone, for sure!
We will definitely do a follow up...and spraying practices when we spray!
We're watching you like a hawk!
Even our heros slip and fall😂
Haha...thanks Norm 😁

Cant get the switch to grow if you keep falling down on it jeff lol! Awsome video as always brotha!👍👍
Haha, thanks Joey!
Hey Jeff? What causes foxtail to be in even high quality switch
It's not in the switch...but in the ground or nearby seed heads, typically. We have it for example in portions of our switchgrass...but not most of it. Very site specific. We take it out with Quincloric. At this point in the season you can hit a new planting with 5 ounces per acre...
Will RC Big Rock do well in NW Arkansas? Thanks,Joe
I wonder if switch grass would work as "edging" for my foot plots? Some of my food plots have cedars around the edge and it is pretty open.
Almost all of my food plots are lined in switchgrass 😊
Thanks! Off to buy some switch grass from your website!@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
What is the best variety for super far south?
We use Blackwell as a base, for one...but there are other varieties for much further south. For example you can guess where Alamo is planted...
How wide of a switchgrass edge should be around your food plots for deer screening
I like at least 15-20' to hide deer from people. 6-8' to hide deer from deer.
I'm in North Texas , land was over grazed I think, wanting to improve overall , new listerner
Good luck...bet a cool area!! Never hunted TX before...
This timing is perfect because I have a failed switchgrass plot that's terrible was gonna stay it all killing everything and starting over ... I didn't know what to do??

You will need to check the quinclorac label. It is available in more than one concentration and the application rates vary considerably.
I have a problem with high organic matter .Any ideas
Too much...or too little? Either way...easy to sgrow great food plots and grass 😉 Actually doesn't take much time at all...
