I prefer wax melts. I find they last longer and smell stronger than candles. Also I have a child so I find they are safer than candles. It's also more affordable so I usually get more than 2 scents at at time. Wax melts are better value for your money for sure.
seeing stats from a small business that is further along in getting sales is so helpful to even smaller businesses! I really appreciate you sharing this info so transparently! also this thumbnail on this video is stunning, I love seeing how much you enjoy photography as you’ve grown in your business & how gorgeous your photos are!
I make wax melts as a hobby and I absolutely love them! I totally agree that people must become familiar with them. And the burners are lovely which helps them sell. Thanks for your videos
Hi, I had Wax Melts with me for the first time two weeks ago at a farmers market to test how it is going ( I currently only sell at farmers markets) and all was sold. Some have also asked if I sell the melters as well. So I bought melters for the next market to offer wax melts and melters as a set. 'm from Berlin and I honestly see very rarely in stores Wax Melts, so I was surprised that they are well liked by people.
I sell at farmers markets also, mostly candles. Just started making wax melts and was thinking of purchasing wax warmers to sell as a set with the melts
Wax melts do not just come in cubes. I Make mine in all sorts of shapes and designs. There is also a whole different category of wax melts known as scoopable wax, and you can even make wax melts that you use a spoon with that look like candles but do not have a wick. I sell far more wax melts than candles because people like the flameless option. They are safer around children and pets and do not need as much attention while still surrounding your home with fragrance.
I am working on starting a wax melt Business, I'm currently in the research stage. I just bought some equipment to get started and I'm planning on starting with just wax melts but I'd like to try making candles as well! I personally love wax melts more cause warmers are safer than candles and I have a 4yr old at home lol
We started our candle business a year ago. We offer wax melts and one size candle. I feel like our candles sell better. I will be working on closing our books for the year so will definitely run numbers 😉
you are honestly a great content creator. I was able to fully watch this video and absorb 100% of everything you said. In most videos like this the person posting usually arent as good at expressing themselves via video format
Thanks so much for this video. It was encouraging because I have a business that is only wax melts. I launched in mid October this year and people love my product. I even got a few people loving wax melts who didn't know what they are. :)
I just started a candle business with you, Erica your help but I haven’t done wax melt yet because I am trying to figure out things but thank you so much for your education all the time. Many blessings ❤️🥰
I have a self care essential business called AMOUR XXIV , and I offer candles, self care apparel, bath salts and room sprays, mugs, and concrete home décor. Candles have been my main focus in my business since I started in 2020 and I was thinking about adding wax melts but didn't know how popular they were. I love your channel by the way has been really helpful in teaching me all about candle making.
I'm hoping to add candles to my line soon- I've been a soapmaker since '08 and added mini lip balms to my line when I started a business. People are kinda "meh" on the soaps (biz is building though!) but they've gone bonkers for the lip balms and I can't keep them in stock. 😍 Thanks for the informative video! I was really surprised at the results! 😎
Late to the party (as usual) but you’ve made me feel SO much better … I’m having serious issues with wicking/hot throw and am at my wits end. Obviously I don’t have this problem with melts. I may just launch with melts/wickless candles while still testing testing testing wicks & continuing with my nightmare of zero HT 😱🤣 Thank you so much for your channel & your transparency 🙏♥️
I am doing waxmelts......Its my 2 month.....And LOVE IT......I am in the candle business for 15years ......and decided to do the waxmelts also.....😀....Thanks for your video ☆☆☆☆☆♡♡♡
I'm an aspiring business owner. I want to make wax melts only, because I find that they're more fun to make and I love the various fun molds you can use. I'm going to be starting a fundraiser for my friend and we'll mainly be selling wax melts (7 different options) and will hopefully be launching 1 candle soon. I just really don't enjoy candles anymore. I love buying them from other people, but I find candle-making to be 10x more stressful (and am always disappointed or frustrated with my results) than the wax melt process.
Fantastic information, I’ve been selling candles for a few years and I want to add wax melts next year as well so that’s good to know that they are about equal. Thanks for sharing 🕯
I think wax melts are great for beginners. They have a short learning curve and a business owner can begin selling them while waiting to perfect their candle.
Also people with pet feel safer with wax melts! Tails can get caught in a flame and I would think safer for children (unless th try to eat them) LOL! Love your channel!
That is my dilemma. I have been trying to make candles off and on since 2017. It is so hard for me because I can't get the scent throw like I want. But I wasn't sure if people would want candles instead of melts. But candles are too hard for me right now and I am getting frustrated. So I am going to do wax melts instead. My melts I can be proud to sell because they are good. Maybe one day I'll incorporate candles.
Hi Erica! I’ve been having trouble deciding on which thermometer to purchase. Could you recommend a dial thermometer you use if you use one? I want to stay away from infrared for now until I get better at candle making😊
Do you use the same scents in wax melts that are in your candles, so if you have 10 different candles you replicate that in wax melts also? or only a select few
Erica, Could you please help point me in direction for labels for the melts? I am not computer savy and can not print my labels ( I tried it was a disaster ) but they are so expensive to order online from label companies. Help please ! Your a blessing , thanks for the knowledge
This was so helpful! With all these sales I know that you have to require sales taxes. With that being said, how do I obtain an FEIN? I have an EIN, but struggling to find out how to get the FEIN.
What wax do you reccomend and use for your business. I want to get into the candle making business and would love any suggestions you can give me. I love all your vidoes btw. You have helped a lot!
If you spend $100 on candel melter for a normal candel you get more in a normal candel make sure get a heat lamp and bam a huge cheaper wax melts that last much longer and smells better cause there no flame with a smoke scent
If you are only looking at the popularity of the items, then units sold is a good metric. However, if you are looking at which item is more successful, you should be comparing revenue and profits generated from each category. That would be more interesting for me as I have just begun selling wax melts and am considering moving to candles as well. But based on the data you provided it seems that candles are much more profitable for you than the melts. Thanks for sharing information regarding your company to help others who aren't as far along on the journey.
Not really true- candles have a lot more expense to make- 1) mor wax 2) wicks and the accessories required to hold wicks down etc 3) glass or metal jars, lids, then you have to add your labels and safety labels and then packaging is larger and more fragile (if it’s a glass candle)… and it takes way more time and testing. Wick testing alone can take $500 in your first experiments with candles. Melts are wax and oil and whatever packaging and small labels you are using and are sent in a much smaller non fragile postal bag. You can also create a recycling program where customers send back the hard plastic cube container your melts came in, you clean it out and re-use it and your customers get reward points or discounts for doing so. You cannot really do that online with glass candle jars the cost of fragile packaging and the risk of it breaking on the way back is too great. So you can’t really say candles are more profitable even if she sold more candles because the profit margin is ALWAYS less with candles due to the outlay just to make a single candle not to mention a whole batch. And then there is setting times… fixing air bubbles at the top… lower scent throw so needing to use more oil…. Candles are not fun. Nor are they of a greater profit. Eveyone makes candles and it may seem like there’s wax melts everywhere but if you come up with a USP and make your different and have amazing blends and quality melts wity amaisng cold and warm scent throw - well just look at Scentsy! Two women started that in their kitchen! It’s a $5.2 billion industry in America last year alone! (Wax melts!)
@@olivialovesdesign I won't disagree that the profit margin per unit is higher for wax melts, but I was talking about total revenue and total profits. Just taking the units sold that she provided and comparing that to the prices she has listed on her website, she generated $1,920 of revenue from wax melts and $6,096 of revenue from candles. That's a difference of over $4,000 total revenue. I can't imagine the the profit margins are such that the wax melts brought in more total profits. Of course, I could be wrong about that. But, again, that would have been more interesting than just going over units sold.
Another awesome video of your work Erica! I have a question, is not related to this topic but just I was reading about this an not sure if is really necessary to start a candle making business. Do we have to have a Insurance to run the business?. Do you recommend this and if yes, what Insurance you recommend?. How you can provide your advice. Thanks in advance!
Hi! I think it depends on where you live on whether or not it is legally obligated, but it is a VERY good idea to have. (think about driving a car without insurance) I personally use liberty mutual, but i know a lot of people use indie!
Hey Erica really nice Video as often! But so funny that your candles are half half. I'm selling Candles as an addition to my String Arts like a special at seasons. Mostly they do really well but it's so much time to do for mine because i'm focused on pouring them into molds and give them all a unique design. But thats fun and really thought about adding wax melts but here in germany you have so many guidelines to keep an eye out that i still stay with only cute and pretty looking candles... for now :D Candles are not my focus but it's such an interesting topic and I really love to watch how this all is going along in your business! Stay healthy and happy! -Anzy
I'm honestly a little discouraged. Just, having gone out here locally idk if it's just me, but I see candles and wax melts... EVERYWHERE and in bulk supply. ☹️ I'm still going to try, but yeah. I'm hanging in there. New scents in and the fruit loops does smell like fruit loops lol.
I disagree because it’s a different market! Mass produced vs handmade is different. I’ve had so much success with wax melts, people love them if they perform better than what they typically use
I prefer wax melts. I find they last longer and smell stronger than candles. Also I have a child so I find they are safer than candles. It's also more affordable so I usually get more than 2 scents at at time. Wax melts are better value for your money for sure.

Whats the size of this sticker that you use in the wax melt container? I searched everywhere but didn't find it.
What wax do you use for your wax melts? Just started making wax melts with Pillar of bliss. Would like to try something different

Look up- making candle labels with Canva and making candle labels with cricut/vinyl cutter and you’ll see tutorials
But don’t pay for someone else to do it.
Thank you for your video@ I would like to sell wax melts with my soaps.

One more question what wax and what percent fragrance oil do u use. Thank you
I use a blend of soy 10 and beeswax and I use about 8% for my candles

Hey Erica. Is it wrong to call them candle melts🤔
I’m not sure, I know that “tart melt” is trademarked though. I just call them wax melts :)
Love your videos. 😊 I’ve been looking for soy tart wax and they seem to be sold out🥺 where is a place to get soy tart wax ?
I love wax melts :)
What about marketing your room sprays into smaller bottles for like car freshener spray?
wonder how hard it would be to make it into aerosol for like the bathroom?
or even something like those 'Glade -Plug ins'
Oh these are all really interesting ideas! 🤔

I just didn’t bother with wax melts. They are sold for so cheap, it’s hard to compete. People sell them for $2. No way they are making a profit.
