My 600-lb Life is an American reality television series that has aired on the TLC television network since 2012. Each episode follows a year in the life of morbidly obese individuals, who usually begin the episode weighing at least 600 pounds (270 kg), and documents their attempts to reduce their weight to a healthy level. Update episodes, called "Where Are They Now?", feature one or more previous patients, picking up a year or more after their original episodes aired.
Patients are placed under the care of Iranian-American Houston surgeon Younan Nowzaradan (often referred to as simply "Dr. Now"), who first has them attempt losing weight on their own by following a strict diet, and then depending on the patient's progress may offer gastric bypass surgery or sleeve gastrectomy to further assist in weight loss.

There's one common factor: they're incapable of providing for or obtaining their own food. This means people around them are supplying them with inordinate amounts of it and without those people, they would lose weight rapidly.

@@deniellechapman6911 I wonder just how much they get monthly. I’m sure the amount is limited and not enough to maintain their current weight. Maybe using disability checks as income for food, especially if the person lives with a relative and doesn’t have to pay rent.

I've often wondered why no one's gone the route of just making the appropriate food for the person needing to lose weight, telling them that's all they're getting, and if they want what's not on the approved foods list they'll just have to get up and get it themselves. Even if they try to sneak with ordering delivery, I think with most places you can explain the situation to have them not accept orders from that number/address.

The recurring theme from these patients seems to be "If Dr can't "help" me, I don't know what I'm going to do." It almost sounds like they're relinquishing the responsibility onto the doctor, and looking for someone to step in with a magic wand. Doesn't work like that.

    • @Itried20takennames

So true. Many do see their obesity as an unfortunate set of circumstances beyond their control, and nothing to do with their behavior or choices.
And no surprise….it is pretty uncomfortable to face that your biggest problem is under your control, but you won’t do the work to change.

@@BradleyonYT Very well put. We are just human after all. Some of us are dealt some pretty crappy hands in life, and sometimes it takes hitting rock bottom to start doing something about it. You seem to have a fairly logical perspective, and realize this is and always will be an ongoing process. Not one of us is ever "In the clear". It takes determination and diligence. It takes will. All too often these days, people are told "It's not your fault. You're a victim." This ideology doesn't help anyone move forward.

I try to wait to eat until after my appointment-that way 1) if I’m being weighed, it’ll be a little lower than if I recently ate. And 2) in case I need to do fasting labs, I’ll already be fasting so can just get the labs done in the same visit. My appointment a few weeks ago was around 3pm and I did fasting labs after. The receptionist in the lab area was surprised and was like “we gotta you get in so you can eat a sandwich after.” I try to do IF most days and have done occasional 24 hr (or slightly longer) fasts so I can usually get past the hunger feeling. That said, I’m not strict with IF and will sometimes eat sooner if I’m feeling extra hungry.

I don't understand this one myself. I'm an overweight woman (obese actually at about 240 pounds and 5'8") and I try "off and on." I'm more successful when I plan meals ahead and measure and weigh all my food and ingredients; I cook almost exclusively at home.
But I am always hungry. Always! It doesn't make any sense and it is beyond frustrating, believe me. But it's a very real phenomenon for some people. I just have to resolve to ignore it, and eat my three meals "by the clock." Not supper time yet? Can't eat anything then. It's tougher than it looks but you can't just throw in the towel!

As a caregiver, (not of an obese person) but a caregiver for someone who can’t physically care for themself. THEY ALL do this. You could take one persons dialogue, and plug it in to every single one of these episodes.......because they ALL say the exact SAME things. It's amazing. .....and it does show the amount of addiction there is......and that these people are addicts.
People think that "drug addicts" are the "bad people", but "food addicts" are exactly the same thing as drug addicts......the addiction substance is just a different set of molecules and chemicals. Food IS their DRUG...and both result in the same end.
My husbands brother and sister both died young from drug and alcohol addiction. That is a terrible thing. And these folks say all the same things that drug addicts say, because the real issue isn't the drugs or food, it's inside each person.

It's definitely gotten kind of out of control. Just like how food became much more processed and carb-heavy in the 80s with the US govts initiative to try to get the most calories in per dollar (to reduce hunger, although it ended up meaning corn syrup in everything and an upside down food pyramid), drive thrus have now become literally everywhere. All types of restaurants/foods now seem to have drive thrus. Just another landmine to navigate/avoid while trying to eat well/healthy in the USA.

A C-ration was a luxury meal. I did a two month stint supporting the USAF and I felt like I was a guest at the Ritz. So now at 72 years old I have a coffee in the morning, fruit and cheese for lunch and have a well balanced evening meal that I prepare for me and my wife. I'm sitting solid at 5'-8" and 160 lbs. I think what will help is if the helpers say to them - now listen here! If you don't follow this diet and lose this weight then I'm out of here and you can go buy your food and cook it yourself I'm done. That would be a wakeup call for them not having anyone to do things like washing them and help them after a poo which I'm sure will be enormous portions. Or the helper should say I'm leaving for a few hours but I have to measure you first and when they ask why then say to see if they have a casket your size because the way you are doing you will need one soon. I honestly think the helpers are acting like slaves and I think it may help giving them the shock treatment. Why should anyone throw away their life for someone who most likely would not have done that for anyone else if they could and what decent person doesn't want to change so they don't have to be their servants anymore. I may sound evil but I think a lot of these people are lazy and selfish and like having people do things for them. I think of the homeless these portions could feed!

    • @susanb4213
      @susanb4213 8 місяців тому +9

Nine times out of ten it is the "helpers" who buy and prepare the food. The fat person is unable to do the shopping, so the person who is making it possible for them to eat this way is the "helper," i.e. enabler. If they would stand their ground and refuse to buy these mountains of junk, the fat person would have no choice but to eat the healthy food they are offered, or no food at all (and at their weight, they could live off of their own body fat for months, only requirement is water). But usually the enablers have their own reasons for refusing to take a stand (and it's not because the fat person will get mad at them and yell at them-it's because they are getting SOMETHING out of the situation they they don't want to give up).
