'Tatey one chief financial officer' aka T81 CFO number plate came with the rangy when I bought her in March 2019. She needs a completely new wiring loom to fix the intermittent electrical issues, someone before me had hacked the existing one to death. If you buy an old P38 take out the body control unit (BCU) and open it up. Check that the printed circuit boards are not coming loose, that is what kills the BCUs. She still needs front axle oil seals, shocks and bushings but then should be pretty well complete. Paint needs doing properly too. I bought it for when I regularly visited the UK to see my old mum. It was intended too as a project car. Renting a car for several weeks is expensive, and you end up in tiny uncomfortable stick shifts and I prefer automatics. The plan was to do the work myself, which I started by replacing all of the cooling system, changing the auto transmission oil and filter and a general engine service. That heater return pipe that you found, is metal and I hadn't noticed it was weeping. The front hubs, CV joints, rotors / discs, suspension air bags, air compressor, air conditioning condenser and filter are all fairly new. Kyle fitted them because I couldn't get into the UK with the travel restrictions. It also had a complete new exhaust system, pity some low life loser had to steal part of it. Travel restrictions stopped me travelling to the UK until February 2022. As things happened, I used Tatey One for a few weeks until Mum passed shortly after in April. 2022. I then no longer needed the car and passed it to Kyle. Even with the cost, had Covid not hit, then it would have been cheaper and better than renting. If you fix the remaining issues, I think you will have a great vehicle. I am delighted to see her getting a new lease of life and probably being cared for properly. Living outside the UK it would cost me way more to visit and sell the car than to basically give it away. Enjoy it.

The p38 is my favourite range rover, still looks like it's meant to go off-road instead of built for the roads of alderley edge. You guys should do a restoration on it, get it as good as you possibly can

I bloody LOVE a P38. Done a full engine rebuild on my 1995 4.6 in the last year. Your engine disabled issue is probably the micro switches in the drivers door lock. I had the same issue, change the lock assembly and itll probably sort it. Also, thanks to Andy for the top tip on switching off the annoying reversing mirror dip! 😀
I bought my £800 p38 2.5 diesel manual about 6 years ago. It costs about a grand a year to maintain. It's easy enough to work on. Just replaced all the air bags and EAS pump myself. 28mpg if you're sensible. The engine disabled is the battery in the key not making contact. Happens on mine and you just have to wiggle the battery cover on the key and try again! The remote on the key has the same frequency as WiFi so it can drain the car battery depending on where you park as it keeps the car awake. For the eas if it ever starts locking out definitely get an easkicker which resets it without a laptop. Also if it doesn't go up leave the door open and car running so it can get the air tank up to pressure before trying to go up.
Love the P38, I’ve had mine for 11 years now and I’ve always done preventive maintenance on it so it’s been perfectly reliable. The beauty of owning an old Land Rover is that you know what’s next to go wrong because all the faults are commonly known so you can prevent it before it happens, simple. I certainly won’t be parting with mine.
Although I miss Alex you still make good videos, just exciting seeing a new post coming from you. Also would be nice seeing an update on older cars, even if they're scrapped would be nice to know what's up with them. Keep up the good work!
I bought a 1 owner 2000 4.6hse p38 here in the US for $2400. I’ve had it for a year, and so far the only stuff that has gone wrong are wheel speed sensors, cruise control, wiper motors, window motors, gauge cluster, sat nav screen, AC controls, every bulb, and it leaks from the radiator, front main, rear main, oil pan and valve cover gaskets. So it’s going great!Might trade up to an L322👍
Mine only needs a head gasket, a transmission, the air suspension rebuilt (it works, but I think it needs new bags, and a valve block rebuild). The ac display is disappearing, the radio needs the code (the code I have no longer works). I think that will fix the problems…. 😂 It’s a 1996 SSE modified by Cameron concepts. It’s supercharged so it’s not slow (it’s not fast, but it was in 1996!). Probably one of the first ones they did. One of my favorite vehicles.
The P38 has been a favourite of mine for a while. It's peak range rover. It looks muscular and has serious presence. Just a shame so many have deferred maintenance and are showing their age.

Comments like this are EXACTLY what I was hoping these guys would achieve with this video, I knew she'd be going green laning (and considering what a stroppy old bag she'd been the last 6 months I figured she might not make it unscathed) but I hoped so much that whatever the outcome, it might encourage people to save a couple. I loved this thing til I had to use it daily, neither myself or the rangy were ready for that situation and I don't blame the car at all, I did my best considering how rapidly the faults escalated and if nothing else I got her to the next relay point in her race so she had a chance! 😂 Very best of luck with yours, I hope you get it sorted and can enjoy what these wonderful, wafty, satisfying barges can offer once again 🤙
Thank you for your reply I have owned mine for 8 years now, but when the electric gremlins started to occur last year, I must admit I kind of “lost the love” and basically parked it up. Thanks to this latest “Car Throttle “ video, seeing how much fun they were having with their P38 did inspire me to take another look at mine today. Finally got it resynced again by using an old school technique, then spent the rest of the day just driving it around the back garden.. Thanks to this video, my Rangie is now up and running again, and the love has definitely returned for it…. ;-)
Love my P38, looking forward to more vids on CTs new purchase! Would love to know where that green lane is they went on? And more info on Jacks P38 as well!
My dad had one of these as a company car in 2000, 4.6 V8. By 60k miles / 2 years it smoked from one tailpipe on start up, needed the coolant topped up every few weeks and came back on a low loader once a month or so and sometimes the cruise control would refuse to disengage which could be exciting. Loved it though, what a car!
Nice video chaps...... but the $90,000.00 question is the P38 Range Rover gonna be a classic like its original big brother???? The $90k figure is what I paid to buy a 1996 P38 Range Rover in New Zealand in 1998.... second hand with just 28.000 kms on the speedo..... also it was a 4.6 litre HSE in Beluga Black with leather saddle interior.... To monitor the various computer modules i use a cheapo OBD2 reader for live engine data and RSW solutions software and cable for digging into the BECM, EAS, HEVAC etc. So far so good, i love driving the old girl.
Just that reaction alone when the key was turned and it didn't show any faults said more than a thousand words :D My guess here is the system that registers faults, is itself, faulty
@@skyrocketautomotive In fairness, after having finished watching the video, it does look like it's in better shape than what a first glance would have me believe, knowing what they paid for it, with the exception of the electrical gremlins All in all, i've seen worse cars for more money. Pretty good going for a near 25 year old £400 land rover😅
There are some out there with over 400k running well. I think it has worst reputation than it should but then again I just bought one with 170k :) Save the p38!
My dad's 2001 Jeep Cherokee has been evading the scrapyard for the past 5+ years. Been welded twice, multiple batteries, hadnbrake cable replacement and of course it is leaking pretty much every fluid to some extent. It's currently sat on the drive pissing out coolant lol
LOVE the P38! Had one back in 2010 for a couple of years. Used to go wrong just sitting outside my house. Have an L322 now which is the same age as the P38 was and that gives much less trouble. Gotta say - the Bordeaux gives me tingles in my special place 🥰😍
If you guys fancy doing a 90's 4X4 UK vs US any time I've got a small UA-cam Chanel and a 1997 4.0 v6 Ford Explorer, arguably Americas answer to the Range Rover and I believe there's only about 200 of them left in the UK. I think it would make a pretty cool comparison video if you'd be interested!
I'm so glad they were, I held out for SO long hoping not to scrap it. This is the best possible outcome for all involved Except the guys She's their problem now 😂
1:48 the first problem with an electronic fault checker 😂 if the fault checker breaks then you've no idea how many faults you have and you'd never know if it was broken until it was too late lol
Any 400£ car is worthy of all sorts of janky fixes to keep it on the road, it just has to run and drive, needs headlights and working windscreenwipers, all the other stuff is unimportant, and is just a bonus 😄 ..and when its MOT time, well, just do the cheapest possible fixes 😂 ..and when all those janky fixes get out of hand then its time to say goodbye, and make at least 100£ profit on it 😂
that part at 15:00 feels like in needs to be written in a book and printed and then scanned so we can find it again on the internet from some reputable source because thats how we are today.
Quick question to alleviate my ignorance, when Andy said the bolts on the exhaust system decide the labour charges, if they won't loosen can you not just gas axe them off? If they're some sort of stud it makes sense or maybe they can't use oxy cutters in their location?
I bought my 2006 4.2L Supercharged L322 Range Rover in December last year for £3500. A £2k gearbox, £150 air suspension bellow and 2x pre-cat O2 sensors is all she's wanted. Based on worse condition examples with higher mileage, it's looking like a £7k car! Range Rovers aren't particularly unreliable provided the previous owner(s) have properly maintained it.
@@hayerubihayerubi5720 yeah they aren’t cheap! Gearbox itself was brand new at £1300 but the rest of it was a new torque converter, valve body and labour seeing as the box was off anyway
My grandfather bought the distant cousin first gen Discovery in 1994, got to a point seven years later that it needed an engine rebuild. When it came to trading it in, he didn't drive it for a week because he feared it would break down. After leaving it at the dealership, he left as quickly as possible.
L322, supposed to be the least grief to own? Work required on that, not bad at all and far better than main dealer prices. Priceless to find an experienced and knowledgeable, trustworthy garage.
I've had my P38 for 12 years, in that time I've spent less on it than they've spent on this one in 4 years. It fails almost every MoT first time, and had an oil leak for the last 10 years, but its been reliable. Not bad for 3k in 2011, and now just touching 270k miles. *frantically touches wood*

Great support on Facebook groups now including electronics, parts (including keys) from independent supploers.
Nope, I can assure you it doesn't have any issues (that the information centre will tell you about at least 😂)
@@skyrocketautomotive In fairness, after having finished watching the video, it does look like it's in better shape than what a first glance would have me believe, knowing what they paid for it, with the exception of the electrical gremlins
All in all, i've seen worse cars for more money. Pretty good going for a near 25 year old £400 land rover😅
There are some out there with over 400k running well. I think it has worst reputation than it should but then again I just bought one with 170k :) Save the p38!
Awesome vid , Uncle Andy what a legend.
More videos of this incoming please 👌
As much as I despise range rovers, this is easy the best content CT has ever done. YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAS
Yeah the 2000+ have a weak cylinder head casting. Otherwise they're pretty much solid.
I snorted at "i thought you said this was a calm one, Edwyn"
"yeah calm compared to the Paris-Dakar"
LOVE the P38! Had one back in 2010 for a couple of years. Used to go wrong just sitting outside my house.
Have an L322 now which is the same age as the P38 was and that gives much less trouble.
Gotta say - the Bordeaux gives me tingles in my special place 🥰😍
On the P38 if it beeps 3 times and then none after that, it means there's so many errors it can't count 👍
John's Gone and the Disappointments. I am pretty sure that Range Rover was named John at some point.
Wish I had know it was so cheap before spending £3000 fixing my freelander!
Please don’t stop making all the content. I’m very much addicted currently
Can someone please buy Edwyn a bigger t shirt haha - love the video guys!
Your Uncle is class, Jack!
Just the right amount of Ethan in this video
sure, if you're in the UK, you won't say Land Rover anymore, but Land Roveh!
Excellent video again 😊 love these cheap car video! Keep it up 🎉
Great Film Thanks bro
No one was interested… ‘til Car Throttle arrived! 😂
Looking forward to seeing the Golf
I'm so glad they were, I held out for SO long hoping not to scrap it. This is the best possible outcome for all involved
Except the guys
She's their problem now 😂
1:48 the first problem with an electronic fault checker 😂 if the fault checker breaks then you've no idea how many faults you have and you'd never know if it was broken until it was too late lol
As an American, it's amusing to watch the British version of shop talk. Everyone does it all around the world.
jack and his family are all proper geeza's by the looks. good to see! :D
Any 400£ car is worthy of all sorts of janky fixes to keep it on the road, it just has to run and drive, needs headlights and working windscreenwipers, all the other stuff is unimportant, and is just a bonus 😄 ..and when its MOT time, well, just do the cheapest possible fixes 😂 ..and when all those janky fixes get out of hand then its time to say goodbye, and make at least 100£ profit on it 😂
This guy gets it ☝️
I love Jack's uncles attitude. Most mechanics bitch and moan about working on cars. This guy seems pretty positive about it. Love that.
Ive always wanted to do something like this, how do you find cheap stuff like this😭
You have to know a guy who knows a guy.
Gotta keep an eye on the for sale ads I've seen 4 different p38s come up for like 1k and everytime I've been tempted
Mirror dip CANCEL 😱 Nice ❤❤
Great video guys! What you need is a Range rover classic next.. I've normally got one for sale
that part at 15:00 feels like in needs to be written in a book and printed and then scanned so we can find it again on the internet from some reputable source because thats how we are today.
The ignition beeps took me back some years. My dad had two P38s over the years. And I've never heard the fault beeps afterwards.
"it's not excessive though innit?". Yup, that's been the motto when designing and building them as well.
I just talked my best friend into buying a P38 for $900. Has a bad tranny, but seems good. Let's see how this journey goes!
Quick question to alleviate my ignorance, when Andy said the bolts on the exhaust system decide the labour charges, if they won't loosen can you not just gas axe them off? If they're some sort of stud it makes sense or maybe they can't use oxy cutters in their location?
Stumbled across this video and it made me laugh as well as learning a thing or two 👍🏼
What a legend. And for it s value for money, the maintenance is not that horrible. I pay around 5-7k€ in about 5 years in my Rovers 75.
2k gearbox
How unreliable can they get ?? 🤣
😂😂😂 brilliant episode lLEE, love that sound ❤️❤️👌👌
L322, supposed to be the least grief to own? Work required on that, not bad at all and far better than main dealer prices. Priceless to find an experienced and knowledgeable, trustworthy garage.
Jack, Edwin and who???? The two best guy's to be making these videosb
, Are in this video!!!!!
