Why is Mustard Oil Banned in US & Europe?

- Sometimes, blind faith in poorly done science with questionable economic interests might not be a good idea. The ban on Mustard oil is a great example. On the basis of some animal studies in the 1970s, US & EU have banned mustard oil for sale as a cooking oil because it contains high amounts of erucic acid, and instead what you can buy is the closely related genetically modified cousin - Canola, which is made from rapeseed, a close cousin of the mustard.
Fun fact: The same Erucic acid has shown promise in improving Insulin resistance in mice - www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/arti...

We get cold pressed rapeseed oil in UK. Love mustard oil though. They should put "only for external use" on McDonald's.
Rape seed oil was introduced into our diet in 1982 or so ...
It contains a VERY unfavourable combination of constituents so that humans go undernourished by it. Rape seed oil is just again one of the things which are being promoted by the food industry but aren't healthy - stick to olive oil 🫒, sunflower oil 🌻, butter (from a reliable, organic source), lard AND most importantly, flax seed oil.

I’ve recently been watching a lot of indian cooking vids on here and the cooks have detailed they use mustard oil. A couple of weeks ago I trotted to an indian grocery store (in London, 🇬🇧) to buy some mustard oil and all the brands stated for external use only that I became confused and walked out of the store without the oil. I’ve continued cooking with ghee but now that I’ve seen your helpful video, I’m planning to return to the store and picking up a bottle now that I understand the propaganda.

Thank you for this gem of a video, much needed for us Indians to dispel many oil myths.
Could I please request you to also make an episode on the Great Olive Oil Scam as well? That is, the way Olive oil was advertised as a "healthy oil" in India to boost its sales here, while indigenous oils like Coconut and Mustard were demonised as being bad for the heart.
Olive oil is healthy and coconut oil is bad for your heart at it is mostly saturated fat, the unhealthy kind of fat.
@@sonuchauhan-ne3cj Unfortunately, this is just another myth perpetuated by corporate gimmickry.
The largest producers of Olive oil are the US and some European countries. India, as we all know, is a big market up for grabs. However, Indians have been using traditional/indigenous oils such as coconut, til and mustard, for centuries! The ONLY way in which Olive oil could displace traditional oils was to concoct medical data that declared the latter as unhealthy. Which fabrication was then fed to us, and which we happily swallowed.
Thus began the use of Olive oil in India in the early 2000s.
Hilariously, in the mid 2010s, coconut oil suddenly gained popularity in countries like the US and UK as a healthy oil! Today, it is very popular among health-conscious Brits in particular.
This is neo-capitalism at its worst.
@@sonuchauhan-ne3cj Wow, my earlier reply got auto-deleted! Apparently, YT will not tolerate statements against countries.
So I'll just list three carefully-worded points:
1. Coconut oil is now being promoted by countries like the US and the UK as a healthy oil.
2. Coconut oil and other indigenous oils such as mustard oil, have been used in India for centuries, and there is little evidence to link them to heart disease. Same goes for ghee, which was also declared unhealthy by various medical reports.
3. The biggest producers of Olive oil are countries like the US and some European countries. India is a big fecund market for corporates.
Need I say more?
@@sonuchauhan-ne3cj Not really. Coconut oil is now being promoted as a very healthy oil, especially in the West. Coconut oil, and others indigenous oils such as mustard oil, have been used in India for centuries, and there is little to no evidence to link them to heart disease. Same goes for ghee. All of these indigenous cooking mediums were subjected to a lot of flak in the early 2000s, so there were definitely a few axes to grind there.
@@gautamv952 I never even heard of Coconut oil being promoted as healthy. I have read many nutrition & health related books all written by western authors, none of them call coconut oil or ghee as healthy.
Saturated fat being unhealthy is very well known thing. Ghee and coconut are both saturated fat. Saturated fats tends to stay solid at room temperature. That's the easy trick which work mostly.
Only people who call saturated fat healthy are carnivorour, low carb keto fanatics. But there whole thing is pseudo science.
Mustard oil is healthy and very similar to olive oil. I haven't seen any reason to believe it's unhealthy.
This is very helpful. In 1982, I was employed by an Australian lab to understand pollination in these plants towards growing breeds low in erucic acid to compete with the new Canadian market. We didn't call them canola back then. They were brassicas and we weren't encouraged to say rape or rapa. Something must have worked as, during a trip to southwestern Australia in 2009 we saw vast fields of canola in bloom.
Eyre Peninsular in south Aust too
A lot of canola is grown in the Australian wheat belt where I come from. We used to call it r@peseed too then the more "acceptable" name came out of nowhere. This is the first time I've heard the explanation *_a portmanteau of "can" from Canada and "ola" from "oil, low acid"._*
Maybe the name is related to another brassica, the delicious "Broccoli Rabe" or in Tuscany, "Rapini".
Did they rename it Auzola?
@@rais1953it's popular in UK and we still call it Rapeseed lol
Not surprised. Thank you for the info.
So that's why my uncle was packing at least 5 kg of oil before going back to the UK. I still remember how hard it was to make sure that they didn't leak by taping them tightly and his bag became very heavy because of that.
Thank you for clarifying that and showing how corporate greed determines narratives!

Thank you for this! I had gone to my Indian grocery store looking for cooking mustard oil but couldn't find any because I thought the label meant there are 2 types of mustard oil-external and internal use.
😂😂😂
An easy way to determine this conundrum is, anything that is healthy for internal consumption is safe for external use__not necessarily the other way around.
Similarly, ALL "organic" food is "NON-GMO"/"NON-GE"__not all "NON-GMO"/"NON-GE" is "organic". 😛
So, the non-complicated thing is to just make organic your first choice, and NON-GMO/NON-GE if that's not possible. 🌱🌿🌻🐝🌳💖🙌😺

It is so frustrating that people make this far reaching laws without basing it on good research. My daughter has a soy allergy. Because if a study with a whopping 300-ish people show that soybean oil didn’t cause a reaction in those 300 soy allergic individuals, products with soybean oil don’t have to be labeled as containing an allergen. However, it’s only the highly refined soybean oil that doesn’t cause the reaction for one, and for two, it’s not even accurate. There was a petition with over 300 people who had soy allergies asking for it to be labeled as an allergen as they had reactions to the soybean oil. My daughter also has a reaction to the oil, though less than with soybean protein or lecithin. Meanwhile, trying to find mustard oil here in the states is difficult, but when we live in Bangladesh, I along with millions of other people use it regularly. So silly.

Mustard oil is as good as olive oil. mustard oil has an upper hand when it comes to nutrition. This is because it has the ideal ratio of 1:2 of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids, as recommended by the WHO
Mustard oil is good because the Indians have been using it since ages. The Indian seers ( rishis) have approved it.
Omega fatty acids and laboratories are dens of distorting truth for exploitation.
And you trust the WHO????
Much better to use saturated fat - tallow/lard or even coconut. All polyunsaturated oils are inherently unstable and the body's requirement for omega-6 is low. Our bodies resemble animals far more than seeds, and that's what we should consume.

EV Olive oil is top notch oil far better than mustard oil
Still not getting into seed oils if I can help it.
To each their own!
The problem with seed oils has always been the production process, rather than the source. Cold pressed sesame seed oil for instance, is an exceptionally nutritious (and historic) oil. The same seed, when refined and processed, produces toxic, easily oxidisable, rancid fat.
Thank you for the enlightenment, good sir.

Maybe the ban is for export/imports and not yet exercised in stores. Check the news ... hopefully there are still traders who can bring it in from inland routes through other means. price of mustard and/or canola oils may go up
I'm from Canada, and I can definitely say Canola is a terrible oil. The modified ratio of Omegas promotes inflammation. Most seed oils are bad though, compared to fruit/nut oil
No, but the cooking temp has to be adjusted accordingly. Adding water/steam during stir-fry will work like a charm.
use extra virgin olive oil, here 4 litre Moro brand is around $50 on special you pay $35 to $37, which I use in my cooking, and for frying I use Golden Canola Oil, which is around 18 to $20 normal price, mustard oil I use in preserving dried pickles with pickle spices, they are good for heart & diabetes too, also clears your congested nasal if inhale steam containing mustard oil droplets
Mustard oil should be allowed to SMOKE before adding ingredients. That how it’s used in India.
Why is that?
They don't know how to cook holistically over there; very set in their ways. The Japanese only use fry-oil once, then dispose of it.

Actually mostly all seed oils are bad but they don't ban the others. Animal fats or real butter is much better or fruit oils like avocado ,olive, or raw coconut oil.
Veg oils are bad but Animal Fats are worst. They have cholesterol, trans fats and high amount of Saturated fats
yes used to think the same from the same anecdotes that were told. but mustard oil has got the much better omega 3:6 ratio for heart health and inflammation compared to olive oil. and the seed oils have generally lower saturated fats and cholesterol compared to butter/ghee, coconut oil, tallow and lard also cholesterol levels. use them sparingly for certain recipes but use the bad reputation seed oils the most for its nutritional value. whole fam noticed a change for the better after looking into the nutritional value of the omega 3:6, saturated, mufa & pufa value, cholesterol values from charts and labels and using them as as desired for the recipe with keeping healthy nutrition profile and portion size of food being cooked for the entire family.
I'm just now finding out about seed oils, myself, or I would definitely try mustard oil! I use a LOT of Indian spices in my cooking, and I like the hot snap of mustard.
What you said is scientifically impossible. It's all about the balance between saturated and unsaturated fats and seed oils are much better for consumption in order to maintain that balance as compared to animal fats and butter.

Not to keen on whatever-you-mean-by-but-have-no-idea " corporate greed" eh? Hey ho, each to his own
Love mustard seed oil, I purchased it from website that sells Indian legumes and seeds, very happy with it. So fragrant and rich taste .
Also, I use it for the body, as a body massage oil in the cold winter days.
So glad to have discovered this channel. I like DATA. You give DATA. Perfect pairing .Liked/subscribed .

great content. One intriguing point..why is mustard Oil not famous in south of India?
Mustard has been grown in North Indian region for hundreds of years, similarly the way coconuts have been growing in Southern Regions of our nation, thus according to the availability of the local oil source (for North it was/is mustard and South it was/is coconut oil), one is famous in one region, other one in another region.
Fat choices are geographic/local. South Indians find it too pungent, and a lot of North Indians can’t stand the aroma of coconut oil
Traditional telugu pickle- Aavakay is made with mustard oil, mango & red chilli powder. The name itself comes from telugu word for mustard- Aavalu. Though nowdays, we are using other oils. Popular brands like priya are using rice bran oil. My childhood is incomplete without aavkay.
@@oitanny1213 thanks. Which is better from the pov of nutrition and thermal stability? modern times Mustard Oil is easily available in south but not accepted as yet

As an Indian living in the US, this is news to me. Mustard oil is available in many places, imported legally (usually from India), and sold openly and legally to customers. There are no labels indicating that it's not edible. This is a very misleading title, to put it mildly.
Not the situation in the UK. Every bottle has a big warning that it is for "External Use Only" and I am talking about the bottles you buy from Desi stores.
Na . It clearly says for external use only . That’s right
You are very wrong my friend every single brand of mustard oil has a warning which says for external use only. I’ve used mustard oil for years for cooking and massaging my whole. The oil they are selling under the name of mustard. oi in U.S. is not mustard oil. I think they have mixed some oils to smell it like mustard oil .
If you want mustard oil, add yellow mustard in regular cooking oil to get the same results
@user-hq5wv6ti9n nope the sugars in the mustard will burn and you will be left with a bitter mess
Nice and short but straight to point
Thank you!
I can buy it at a local Indian market in Austin TX. Erushiol is the component that causes poison ivy reactions. It is also part of the formula for the finish used on Japanese lacquerware. If memory serves, it is also found in the skin of cashews and that’s why they are so hard to safely process and thus so expensive.
Please make a video on soya
Will do!
They are afraid Mustard could catch the taste pallets of European people 😂😂, but i ev bought some 🫒 oil to try in salads .
In a supermarket where I frequent (Kerala, India), they stick that warning label to some mustard oil bottles.
Additionally it is an cold press oil which makes it less harmful as compared to the processed/refined ones.
