Steely Dan is the most influential yet relatively less known band in history. They were extremely talented and have a real variety of songs in their catalogue.
They may have never been the biggest band in the world, but they could never be considered less than very well known. Almost every album during their original period is certified platinum and they had 9 top 40 hits.
@@michaelvielhaber9342Yep. They were on the radio a lot over quite a period of time when I was young. And when I got to high school and college age, I just bought the records, as did a lot of my friends. Especially friends that were also a musicians like me.
"Less than well known"??? How about Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Songwriters Hall of Fame, Library of Congress Inductees, multiple Top 40/Top 10 hits, multiple Grammy recipients for: Album of the Year, Best Engineered Album, Best Studio Production. I'd say that's pretty well known.
Very much so. Donald Fagen and Walter Becker were the backbone of the band, with Fagan being the more recognizable for his voice, but they were really a jazz band that strayed into rock/pop during the very formative years between 1971 and 1981. They not only made a name for themselves as a band, but did a ton of studio work and writing for other bands at the time. Fun fact...Steely Dan was taken from a William S. Burroughs novel Naked Lunch. I won't ruin it, but look it up and see if it gives you a laugh, heh.
Steely Dan is essentially two players. Donald Fagen and Walter Becker. They employed a wide ranging and diverse group of first rate session musicians. They were an elite group. 💕💕🙏🙏
Good morning, Maddy! Steely Dan has a wide and varied catalog. Dirty Work is just the tip of a very large iceberg. Don't Take Me Alive, Pretzel Logic, Reelin In The Years, Aja, FM, Peg, Haitian Divorce, and many more. Thanks for sharing your experiences and perceptions of great music! ✌️☮️🤙🤟👊💪🔥❤️

One of those fantastic choruses, but as a musician, I really like the arrangement and the performance and the composition all the way through. But then again you can say that about most of their songs. Steely Dan was truly an amazing band. And of course we all learned what their band name is a namesake of by probably around third or forth grade via the playground, lol.
Maddy, you picked one of the most talented bands ever. Their sound is special and totally unique. So many of their albums have become big hits. Thanks Maddy, your sure to love them.
Steely Dan has a lot of great music, and this hopefully is the beginning of a deep, deep rabbit hole for you. They have many different styles, but they're all unmistakenly Steely Dan.
Steely Dan is music for people who didn't know they liked jazz. Donald Fagen (keyboards) is known as an absolute perfectionist in the studio, which is why all their tracks sound so amazingly tight. That carried on when he moved into his solo work; check out "I.G.Y." from his album The Nightfly.
First time I've heard this song! Not only do we get a great song, we also get Maddy ASMR as an added bonus!❤ 🤩 My favorites songs of theirs are Do It Again & Rikki Don't Lose That Number
They used this in the Sopranos a bunch of years back... but it made a big splash on the show 'Euphoria'.... and became a TikTok thang. This is David Palmer singing lead... he was only on the first album.
The first time I sang kareoke was in a Nashville bar. A whole bunch of cowboys there, but I don't know much country tunes. So I pick "Hey Nineteen" because Fagen really just talks throughout. After they annouce me, one cowboy yells out, "Yeah Joe, I'm gonna hear me some Steely Dan! Heeeeeeeeeee...HAAAAAAAAAA!
Fantastic Band ❤ The 70s is split?? Nixon and Vietnam ,, the pain 😢 1976 Celebration of Life Weekends at the Park,BBQs Dancing and singing with the Radio ❤️☺️.. I was singing with you 🥰🎶 Thank You for Steely Dan 🥰 Take Care 🙏✌️❤️ Enjoy
Cool song, I remember the first few times i heard this thinking it was Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young! Great choice Maddy....don't know if you're branching out to ASMR with that whispering but...maybe an option to have in the back pocket?! lol Keep up the good work!
Hi Maddy. Sad that we lost Walter Becker back in '17. Steely Dan used a variety of studio musicians to record many of their albums during the 70s mostly. Rarely seen in concert. They did get a lot of airplay due to many of their hit songs. My favorite is Black Friday, yet so many other catchy tunes to mention here. Thank you for posting, Maddy. Have a great day! 🤘😎🤘
This is one of the least "dark" Steely Dan songs. The vast majority of their songs feature upbeat jazzy pop music with incredibly dark lyrics. Topics include, but are not limited to, drug dealers, murder, porn stars returning home (probably), desired but never reached incestuous relationships, inappropriate teacher/student relations, p-dophilia, drug addiction, suicide and more. This track is ONLY about consenting adults committing adultery.
Good song by Steele Dan! Next song should be Aja...! Now lets see you get a good 10min. of stairs work done with the mini hammer! Haha jk lol 🤣 Thanks for sharing Maddy! ❤️💛🔨
Some of that 80% might not realize they're not subscribed. I've seen a lot of your stuff and just assumed I was; I wasn't. Now I am. Btw: if you like this, you're really gonna like Steely Dan, the smoothest damn band in the 20th century. This song's an odd duck; the only hit of theirs NOT sung by Donald Fagen. It was sung by a more "commercial-sounding" guy named David Palmer, who is fine and a great singer, but not really "them", if you know what I mean. Keep listening, and you will!
Continuing to cover music from my youth. A feast for the ears, eyes and mind. Keep it up. Would love to hear some Pink Floyd from the Roger Waters era. Mother is a song that rarely gets reacted to.
Keep in mind this was SD debut album. Back in those days you need to produce some great music or you wouldn't make it. I've been a fan since 73. Not a bad song on any of their albums. You need to react to more SD in the future you won't regret it.
There are two basic kinds of Steely Dan fans: 1- Those who think this 1972 debut release was their best work and it was mostly downhill from here. 2- Those of us who recognize the act only really started to come into its own with 1974's "Pretzel Logic" and reached its pinnacle with 1978's "Aja". (but I'm totally not biased ... lol) Reductionist, but generally true (my bias not withstanding). But yeah, good boomer easy listening. Come home from work, fire up a J of Mexican dirt weed, crack open a Pabst or Schlitz, sink into the recliner, and try to not drop the Marlboro onto the carpet again. lol

Steely Dan was the gateway drug for me in the late 70's that led me into jazz and jazz rock fusion. The Night Fly took me in deeper.

This is one of the three songs Donald Fagen or sometimes Walter Becker, don't sing in their entire catalog...It is David Palmer
