James Hetfield is a Riff God, The Black Album is one of the greatest and heaviest albums of Heavy Metal and for sure one of the top albums in the 90´s, it crowned Metallica from an underground breaking band all the way to the most importat Metal band to the Biggest (and for a period of time) the Best Metal band, from Music to Sales and everything in between there was a reason why Metallica got so big and is as influential as is today.
Black Album was great. It wasn't even as different from their first 4 albums as people say. There was some of the heaviest stuff I've ever heard in that album and the lyrics from James are just amazing. Kirk does well on this album especially with the unforgiven solo. Lars learned more rhythm instead of just mindless fast drumming. Jason was great as usual and his bass was much louder than AJFA
Max Lu I wish people would see the truth of what you just said. Everybody thinks Metallica ended at AJFA. Bullshit! The Black Album - in many ways - is the crowning jewel of their most iconic era (Kill through Black).
This, you´re totally Right, Youe knoe from KEA to BA Metallica is untouchable, i hate that there´s people that still shits on Load and ReLoad, mabye differente from even the Black album, but damn it they worth it.
lucky dominguez I don't even think the Load albums were that bad in retrospect. Yeah there was a lot of filler, but if they condensed them into one album of about 12 to 14 songs, they would be considered great.
The way the sound was captured "recorded" on this album is something special, it had this almost futuristic aspects to it. Even compared to new recorded albums the recording engineering in this album still shines. Not even mentioning the so many amazing guitar riffs this album has....timeless.
The Black Album is great on many levels. Has some great heavy songs that get me through a rough day. Nothing Else Matters is very calming song for me. This album ive listened to since 1995 and i don't see myself stopping any time soon. A Year and a Half in the Life of is a brilliant insight into the making of Black Album live footage and music vids.
To all the Metallica guitar "tone cloners" out there, pay close attention to how Hetfield has taped up his lower strings and the headstock of his guitar at 0:54 sec. James is muting all excess string noise and completely muting ( via the white tape ) all unwanted strings.
Bob Rock did his time already. GET HIM BACK! I’m pretty sure his as refreshed as the boys, and ready for a come back. He must have an essential new approach by now.. Gosh! I would love to see Bob Rock as producer again, seriously.
I must say that I tend to sell James short as a guitarist. I don't know that he's the greatest soloist, and he would probably admit as much, but I've never really seen him play using finger style on a classical guitar like in this video. I love the heavy tones, but I also have a great love for acoustic and classical/finger style playing. I'm a huge Steve Howe (Yes) fan, and both Ritchie Blackmore and Randy Rhoads were greatly influenced by classical, and made use of that genre on both acoustic and electric guitar. Yngwie is obviously another example, but I wish he played more acoustic pieces alternating between single note passages and chord work---I'm sure he CAN, but focuses on the lightning fast solo passages. Again, I don't think that James is on a level with those 3 solo wise, but is a great rhythm player and can get by well enough as a soloist.
He played the live is to die intro in acoustic, and its incredibly hard to play cleanly plus he has a video on youtube where he plays acoustic with some other people.
Watching how they are in the studio then vs watching the making of Death Magnetic or Hardwired is so sad. They looked like they were really enjoying themselves back then, but now it looks like they're just punching in
Agreed w the other guy who commented. They’ve been doing this for a long long time. And I still see the happiness in them , obviously sometimes it’s gonna be work, but at this point they get to lay back and do it how they please.
If you listen at 0:50, you can hear the sound of James' pick while he plays the Enter Sandman riff...Are my ears deceiving me or does it sound like he's using really thin strings? I can't imagine a player like Hetfield using light gauge strings but who knows...

***** Not as heavy??? That Was Just Your Life and My Apocalypse are sledgehammers! What makes the overall album seem not as heavy as the first three is Rick Rubin's Lackluster production. To be honest, I'm not a big fan of Rubin's metal-work. His Slayer albums sacrifice ferocity in exchange for fidelity, when both can be attained at once.
***** What? Sad But True is no way thrash. It has slow heavy riffs (thrash is all about fast and aggresive riffing). Through the Never could be called thrash. I think Struggle Within is thrash too

Whoever says that Metallica "sold out" after this album then why would they not make a similar album in 1996 and make shitloads of money and not branch off and try new things...
I HATED the Black album. Maybe I'm too old, but Metallica went to shit when Burton died. He would never have allowed the band to go in the direction they went. I remember when Justice came out. I was a little disappointed, but it was still a Metallica album. I couldn't even finish listening to the Black album when it came out. Lightning and Puppets were so amazing when they came out, it's such a disappointment where they have gone.
I always see people saying that Cliff wouldn't have let them go in the direction that they did. But the band was lead by James and Lars, not Cliff. In my mind there's no disputing the fact that if James and Lars wanted to go in this direction, they would have with or without Cliff. People always assume Cliff would've hated this stuff because all they know of Cliff is the stuff he contributed on master and ride, but the reality is that out of all of those guys, Cliff was the most musically diverse. He was heavily influence by classical music, and also listened to Yes, The Police, Jethro Tull, and a bunch of stuff that wasn't remotely metal. He had a very open mind when it came to music and wasn't concerned about adhering to strict genre styles. So, if anything, if you had to guess who might support this kind of stuff back in 86, Cliff probably would've been the most likely candidate out of all of them. People like to present him as the most die hard and 'metal' out of the band, but the fact is he was already bringing in external influences for the band, especially with James on classical music and harmony. It's a shame people have it so backwards.
That snare is a beast!

Yeah, they have fillers, but you don´t even need to cut as much song, just 2-3 from each album, they´re awesome
The Unforgiven.. First Metallica song i've ever heard, then checked out the other songs, other albums.. Yep, it's awesome.
actually, entersandman's main riff is from Kirk...
ebalim Kirk was randomly playing stuff then Lars wanted to make a song out of it.
+Silly banana wrong
the riff was writen when kirk was in exodus. but not the version that is known today as the enter sandman riff :v
again, wrong.
actually it is...... then what it is???....i wanna hear your answer
James was a 28 years old, but he looks like 40 !! :D compare to 28 years old of our days XD
James was in his Lumberjack stage. After justice he just kept growing his hair xD
Without moustache looks young, same by now he looks old as fuck with it
Drinking will do that to you. That middle aged cop mustache also probably did it.
Coffin Feeder plus the skin blemishes
it’s that fucking mustache
ohh shit, Lars` kit sounds so good!!
Luke Charly Not many people know this, but the snare Lars used was borrowed from another band's drummer
Luke Charly oh come. on the only bad kit lars used was the st anger kit
JAYMEZ Motley Crue?
That's the only thing Bob Rock Doues best. Big, larger than life drums
@Electric Scars thank you

Best album they ever done by far, anyone can listen to this album even people that aren't really into metal. Every song is great and catchy.

2:05 That "sad but true" segment is tighter than those Lars' shorts LOL What a sound!!
You missed the Tent Of Doom where James is playing the guitar on his own. Sounds godly.
His music is hard, you don't fuck with him.(about James)-Jason Newsted
Ajaja, sadam hussein made colaborations in the recording of black album.
James Hetfield with a Rickenbacker?!?!
0:35 sounds like drop c !
They were at their peak with Jason imo. I don't care what anyone says the black album is still a masterpiece.
You forgot the, "Where Ever I May Roam" riff that was on the video.
That's a true is the best True ever version that won the play in the studio
El compadre is across the st from gc Hollywood and next to it was the ESP store 😢
Black album es el mejor 🖤
Inject all of this into my veins
I'd pay to hear James play a bluegrass or Spanish folk music show.
why doenst lars use that snare/drum kit now???
Several reasons, he is an idiot who cannot play for shit and he doesn't give a shit about sounding half way decent.
he was uncomfortable with the kit, and the snare was a trigger.
i think you are the idiot
Lars didn't own the Snare, I think it was rented or borrowed from somewhere, and the whole kit is studio kit not suit for touring kit
Drums on Hardwired sound great though :P
if not for clips like this I'd keep thinking Lars was never a passable drummer
Watching how they are in the studio then vs watching the making of Death Magnetic or Hardwired is so sad. They looked like they were really enjoying themselves back then, but now it looks like they're just punching in

Black Album is most Radiophonic Heavy Metal album
Back when bands ACTUALLY recorded as a FULL band and not pro tools cut and paste bull shit of the post 2000's era

He plays so tight so it makes such noice of clapping strings
He uses 11 (i know, replying 3 years.later)
5:26 to 5:35 What Metallica song is that riff from???
Rebel Rocker USA
That's James trying to play Stairway to Heaven then going into Nothing Else Matters
Keesen Gripp ya he kinda botched that Stairway lol
Did Metallica really record their albums live like that? Everyone in the same room etc etc or is that just rehearsal?
Clorox Bleach just a rehearsal
Carlos Matos
They recorded the drums that way. Everything else was separate parts.
the best metallica is master of puppets and the black album
Justice is better than both
SkorpionPlays - Destiny Ride the Lightning would like to talk to them!
