      And is that camera or a light on the right drop bar? The rider is either marking a point on the recording, or switching off a (flashing?) light. If it's the latter, that's a good move and suggests regular interaction with horses.
      Flashing lights, flappy jackets, or simply approaching silently from behind can all cause problems for horses and riders.

    I had a similar scenario on a single track road recently where there was sufficient space for a pass so I moved as far left as I could and stopped until the cyclists passed. A nod of appreciation and on our way with no dramas

    Nicely done with the horse - the verbal communication is something very few cyclists do when approaching a horse and rider. The number of time's we've had a cyclist 'appear' alongside our horses when out riding, is quite scary.

  • @bikes_camera_more
    @bikes_camera_more 18 днів тому +2

    Ashley, three more horse related tips:
    1 - if a horse is approaching from the opposite direction and you have a flashing front light on your bike, cover it until you have passed; the flashing light can spook some horses
    2 - If you approach a horse & rider from behind, call out clearly to announce your approach - horses respond better to a human voice than they will a bell or a rider appearing 'out of nowhere'
    3 - if you see horse poo in the road and it is still steaming (it does!) yet you have not yet passed a horse, the likelihood is that the horse will be in the road ahead of you just out of sight, perhaps round a bend.

    I'm learning a lot of this as a new cyclist at 37. I live in a Town where "cycle lane" means 15 metres of 30cm wide paint that just ends randomly. I have to ride on the road including roundabouts and bypasses with lorries and cars. Cars either do not indicate or they suddenly slam on brakes and indicate 0.5 seconds before turning but the main risk is cars over taking me into oncoming traffic to save 1 second from their day. Killing me is an acceptable outcome to save 1 second. They genuinely believe that, I see it in their actions and body language.

    Great video as always mate. These are some great examples of good cycling. I had a pretty close call today on an e-scooter. The junction I was passing has quite limited visibility as it is, so since the driver couldn't see any bigger vehicles coming they just went for it. I don't think they even looked at me until I was in their mirror, and even then doubtful. And to top it all off the driver was smoking a bloody joint. It absolutely reeked. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a smoke and have no problem with people enjoying themselves. BUT, driving under the influence while actively smoking is absolutely stupid behaviour. Not the first time I've seen it and it definitely won't be the last. I just hope to god these people give themselves a shake before they either get arrested, have a crash or worse.

    1:50 I have to say I'm not a big fan of the 'on your right/left' call out. I don't think many pedestrians will know what to do with that and might find it a bit presumptuous. I tend to slow right down and match their pace and just say 'hi, do you mind if I pass by', not making any assumptions on which way they're going to move. On the town bike I've got a massive bell, so I ring that instead.

      Fair point, generally if I'm seen/ heard it all gets worked out. In this situation she didn't comprehend me but I was happy to go by having judged that she wasn't about to step towards me.

      @@cyclecam6328 yep, I think "on your left/right" is fine in a cycling event or group riding, but your random lady in the street is going to be WTF? Also, she has a walking stick, she might be slow at walking, but lightning fast at sticking that through your front wheel!
      (actually, that's another point, I tend to aim for the side away from a walking stick, dog, bag etc., not always possible or necessary though!)
      Your speed was fine in terms of stopping if you needed too. But what I find is some pedestrians are very easily startled, so you've got to try and not creep up on them (even though they really ought to be expecting to encounter a cyclist on a cycle path!). It's difficult though, especially when they're using headphones or are hard of hearing. Sometimes you can't win, I scared the cr@p out of a dog walker the other day. I actually started laughing as it was absurd; they were on the opposite side of the road, at least 3-4 metres away and swung round with an expression of shock and horror. Gave me the icy stare of death, then knelt down to comfort their 'traumatised' dog!

    The importance of not holding up tractors is huge, because people will often get impatient with tractors, and they will be determined to get past. Seen them overtaking tractors indicating to go right, know someone who had 2 people attempt to overtake as he was turning right. It was a downhill slope so how they missed the beacons, the indicator and the slowing pace on approach to the ONLY right turn within more than 500 metres.

And I was alway taught that where practicable (yes *practicable* - not a mispelling) when on my bike I pull in at opportune moments to allow other faster moving vehicles behind be to clear, especially if it seems they are starting to qeueue up a little. It's just plain common sense and courteous. It is in actual fact the natural reverse of this new fangled 'hierarchy of road users' - the codefied in the new HWC rules is an hierarchy of vulnerability and therefor sensible to state, but for the very same reason, that hierarchy should be giving way for safety to the tier above them when the situation dictates.

Like when you let people out of a side road when you don't have to.
      I agree that it shouldn't be an expectation and that 95% of the time I am on roads where no one is likely to be held up for more than 30s to a minute and I am travelling quite fast. Assume that all drivers are facing backwards while steering by twerking with their gluteous maximus on the steering wheel, one foot flooring the gas pedal, the other foot putting a puzzle together, drunk texting with one hand while being on a spousal abuse phone call with the other hand. If you can't get the drivers eye contact (strobe lights and cheerfully waving while shouting HAVE A BEAUTIFUL DAY or something else 100% charming helps) then assume that the driver or even cyclist can't see you at all. A cyclist killed himself and a motorcyclist in eastern Idaho by making a sudden U turn without hearing the Harley Davidson motorcycle behind him. Another cyclist did 20 mph on an ebike through a stop sign on a blind intersection and was T-boned by a truck in a 50 mph road with the right of way. That young truck driver psychologically will carry that crippling guilt for life. Everyone cycle carefully out there. Be prepared to stop or evade at all times.

      That a car might move off has occured to me and I'm capable of handling the situation should one start to move.
      I think that was a fair way to handle the pedestrian and blind bend. Ideally I would have liked a better view of the corner hence my speed is low. I decided not to take a far left position then move central as I felt this could confuse the pedestrian into stepping right. When people criticise a cyclist for putting themselves in a dangerous situation when another road user does something poor, it's not "victim blaming". Most of the situations you get outraged about would be far less of an issue if you followed this mentality.

      @TheRip72 21 день тому

      Sorry, but bells are the worst invention ever. They are nothing more than a quiet imitation of a car's horn.
      A car needs a (louder) horn because it needs to be heard from further & the vehicle itself is louder. You won't hear the driver's voice if the windows are closed.
      The cyclist used their voice well & this is important. You can say a lot more than just beep or ding. I clearly heard a call of "on your right". This gave the pedestrian a chance to react much more quickly than by turning their head & working out where the bike was going before reacting (which they would have to do after hearing a bell & by that time, you would have closed the gap significantly, increasing risk). Many pedestrians wear headphones now anyway. They will not hear a bell but you can always raise your voice if necessary.
      We all have a voice. It is the best form of communication from a riding position & you don't even need to move your hand to use it.

    I recommend that any road user takes a few motorcycle lessons. You're taught to drive defensively and, most importantly from a cyclist's point of view, the 'lifesaver' - that glance to your nearside just to make sure there's nothing coming up that you haven't seen ? And why don't cyclists have bells ? People can't always pick out a voice from behind especially if it's a busy environment. Runners seem to think that you can hear them from behind and get a bit annoyed if you're walking a dog, also not expecting them, that snaps at them. A bit of forethought and consideration would help everybody. PS I've been a runner, a cyclist, a motorcyclist, a car and lorry driver, and a dog owner, so I've got a handle on how most reasonable road users think.
