hi-vis and helmets INCREASES the chances of you being involved in an incident. It increases risk taking by you and thos e around you, it creates a victim blaming culture and all the global evidence shows that so called PPE wearing by vulnerable road users (indeed all sports that mandate helmet wearing) has a huge detrimental effect on safety of the vulnerable and deflection of responsibility by those causing the vast majority of harm in the first instance. This was seen in the early 1980s when the Isles report outed the harms seatbelts laws brought about, drivers were crashing more often, killing and maiming pedestrains, cyclists and even back seat passengers whom were unbelted. This evidence was hidden from parliament such that the back seat belt laws were passed to complete matters. reductions in motorvehicles deaths were nothing to do with seatbelts, it was the cracking down on bald tyres, mixing crss plys and radials, cracking down on drink driving, speeding, better junction/road design and signage and reduced speeds in urban areas due to sheer weight of traffic.

The canal from Netherton to Bootle is horrendous. Cycled it yesterday on a Gravel bike. My hands were in bits, as was my posterior! It's terrible how poorly maintained (and overgrown) the tow-paths are. It would be good if you could do a video on safe routes into the city centre from Maghull, Melling, Crosby and/or Bootle areas. I believe that, at the moment, the lack of safe routes is deterring a lot of would-be cycling commuters. I'm planning on writing to the LCR and Local MPs to advocate for better cycling infrastructure for commuters wanting to choose the healthier, more environmentally friendly options! A reference to a well-known professional with a respected following would be advantageous!

Ive been a road cyclist for years, biggest advice is take what looks like 700 x 25c tyres off that bike (especially this time of year) & get the widest tyres the frame can take (32c would be ideal) & run lower PSI. that will add extra comfort & im guessing the bike will come with carbon fibre forks so that should help with road chatter.

Horrified to hear you say that Liverpool driving instructors are anti-cyclist. Cycling in (and especially to) Liverpool along any of the main routes from the north is perilous and terrifying at the best of times. Bad attitude from other road users is the primary cause for concern and if they're getting taught it from the very beginning then we have little hope for a better future for our city.

I don't disagree with what Ashley says in this video but the clips to me demonstrate how tricky and dangerous it is to cycle in a busy city. It's almost impossible to maintain strict positioning in primary/secondary at times given how busy the traffic is and the amount of parked vehicles. When I cycle I do adopt primary then move over to allow a vehicle to pass then go back out into primary but this is on much quieter roads. Even then I still get numerous close and dangerous overtakes, and this is in a quiet rural area.

Best of luck on the road and no doubt you will grow to love the positive side cycling brings. Stay safe out there

When I started my driving lessons, my driving instructor was very impressed with my hazard awareness and anticipation, even from my 1st lesson. So you'll probably be OK! As a Roadie, you have to ride like everybody is out to kill you - so you learn to keep yourself safe. PS. Real roadies wouldn't have reflectors on their wheels or MTB pedals, but getting into the Velominati Rules is a whole other ball game!

As of last summer I use lights night and day. My ride partner was hit by an oncoming vehicle on a narrow lane. The driver claimed we were invisible in the bright/shade varying light on the tree-lined road. There were other contributing circumstances pertaining to that particular driver but as far as me reducing risk in future, I thought daylight lights was a good step.

Proviz do some great reflective kit. I have a reversible gilet - extremely reflective on one side for after dark and high viz yellow on the other side for daytime lower light conditions. Also worth mentioning the garmin varia radar rear light which gives alerts of cars approaching from behind, it also has an eye catcher flash when it detects a vehicle. By the way, I personally really dislike flashing lights on bikes unless it’s a relatively slow flash and accompanied by a solid beam at the same time - the faster and brighter the flash, the more I think they affect everybody else’s visibility.

About the braking: I understand the concern, but if you're going down hill or above about 15mph, go to the drops. I would advise going to the drops even if you just feel like you're going a bit fast. All that being said, I have only had a few close calls on the bike, so for you it shouldn't be an issue with your planning and hazard perception skills. Every time I've had to stop quickly, I've been able to without hardship. Make sure your brakes are quite firm too. They might feel too firm at the start, but whilst you're on the hoods it'll make the brakes more effective. It's great to see that you're covering all types of road use! It'll be interesting to see how you find your road bike.

    1) Driver pulls into the cycling lane in the first video, they shouldn't be there. 2) Drivers seem to be speeding in a number of the clips. 3) Cycling on the phone is already banned 4) Over 27,000 people killed or seriously injured every year by motorists in the UK. The majority of these are caused by dangerous or reckless driving. Jumping red lights, etc., is not even in the top 10 of causes of cyclists' deaths. Regardless of cyclists' behaviour, it's the authoritarian entitlement of drivers which is the problem and its instructors like you who create this.

Admittedly, his brother's one-liners tend to be funnier. I would also have passed the car on the right... but this still makes the driver a k*nt (for turning without looking for cyclists). Shouldn't k*nts be called k*nts? If they're called k*nts often enough that might make some of them more aware that bikes can be anywhere and everywhere and they need to drive accordingly. Personally I have always found Jeremy Vain quite vine (and as a meja luvvie he obviously gets paid too much for not very much). But I'm not sure that his actions here warrant such one-sided hostility from a pro-biking channel.

Honestly mate you should have bought 2nd hand. Mechanical disc brakes are awful. For the money you paid you’d have got a really nice CAAD12 with Shimano 105. It would be 2kg lighter and a far better bike. Prob would have had rim brakes but on aluminium clinchers and a nice set of swissstop pads will stop much better than a mechanical disc bike.

My cannondale system six dura ace aero road bike, is a little heavier but much faster because of the aero tube shapes and tube layout.
