Love that you're being honest, and as you said, you don't have to love everything. It is very much a jazz fusion piece, and I personally adore the chord progressions through the chorus, but I can easily see why some people wouldn't. Also, that outro is so brilliant. Avicii said he really liked this cover. Now that he's gone, this song has sort of taken on a completely other meaning to me, and the darkness of this cover seems very fitting, sadly.

What I love the most about the weird chord progression in the second half chorus is how it is carefully design with the lyrics.
"All this time I've been finding myself, and I didn't know I was lost."
Aren't the chords telling the exact same story?

A nice honest review as always. Always in when DL is on the chart. 💯👍

Their fusion covers always throw me! I love them but I’m always like woah that’s different.. takes a few listens but worth it! Steve cheers for the realness and honesty you present (as usual)

I’ve noted you do not dig the more jazzy reharmonizations. As someone coming from pop and finding my way into jazz more recently I can totally understand that. It is a journey and perhaps not for everyone. For me those choices just blow my house of the roof. I can’t get enough. For me the reharmonizations are maybe the coolest things with Dirty Loops cover songs and make them more unique. Anyway, love your reactions and hope to see more!😃

Thanks Mikael! Yeah, given so many people love and understand jazz at a deep level I have to imagine it's a game of patience and learning gradually. It may be something I can find a keenness for in future. Who knows!

I dont think i "got" the chords when i first listened but after repeated listenings I think they are the best part.

He gave it up though, and settled for max six strings, as he has rather small hands, and didn't feel that he could handle it properly. But it really looks cool. :)

It took me a few listenings myself before I learned to appreciate this arrangement.

Love that you give your honest opinion without too many details other than "didn't really like that" - refreshing! Loved your earlier reactions on these guys and agreed with everything you've said. But for whatever reason, this is probably my favorite of theirs just because of the chords (no clue why but "really like that").

I agree as well! Can't tell why, but after 20+ times listening to this I absolutely love it even more :)

This one has really grown on me too and is now one of my favs. There is just something about it, unusual and different even for DL.

Totally fair enough! I think it's great that for some folks like me this isn't quite my thing, but for others this is the favourite song. If we all loved the same things the same way life would be super dull =)

Interesting reaction, Steve. This is actually one of my favorite DL covers, but your take on it has its merits. While I may not agree with everything you said, I can’t fault you for your honesty.

Much appreciated Doug. It certainly deserves more listens I reckon. Enough people seem to dig it that I want to understand more.

And I actually agree!! In regard to the chords... But I smiled pretty much throughout - they are playing around... All good! Life moves on! :-)

I was really confused at the beginning because I was expecting to hear Wham! Hahaha... I think you and I are kind of in agreement on this one. I think I liked it a hair more than you did, but it wasn't my favorite thing they've done. Still really good, but I had the same feeling about the discordant synth layer. I get what they were trying to do there, but for me it definitely shifted the mood a bit in a direction that didn't sit right with me. Oh well. They're stuff phenomenal in my book 😆 Great video as always!

The original is too happy for me, not quite happy hardcore enforced happiness but not far off, so I quite enjoy the dark chords 😁👍

Wow, really interesting. I've sort of been waiting for you to react to this particular song. Do appreciate the honesty, that's a good thing. This has become one of my favs for some of the same reasons it didn't hit with you. I find that subtle dark quality particularly attractive. I love the special vibe Aron's brush work gives the song and then at the end when the Loops meteor hits, well I wish that could go on for a least another five minutes or so. Do love your reactions, quality work sir.

Great reaction, Steve, as always, I definitely enjoyed that! 😉
Yes, it’s dark and menacing at times, creeping in when it should’ve still been easy going, -one of the things I love about this track: the amazing contrasts… and as some others have said: it took me a few times too of listening to this song to kinda ‘fall into’ those crazy chords.
It might be interesting to listen (and get a reaction) to some more of Dirty Loops’ early covers and songs from their Loopified album. They’re almost all outrageous and ingenious-.
Also Jonah’s “Coffee Break” feat. Richard Bona is an amazing piece, as is his cover of “Bad” 🔥
Looking forward to your reactions to some of those!
    Thanks 🙏

I may understand that It takes a bit to digest this version. At the end what are the limits when we change chords? When it start to be weird listening at it? I think it depend mostly how far your ear is used to this variations, technically there are NO clear limits about what is in the chords range and what is out. Till now I have never found an clear answer on this!

    • @SteveOGRock
      @SteveOGRock  2 роки тому +1

Oh for sure, there's a big heap of opinion as to what "works" for someone about a particular style/section/moment/composition of music. Almost certainly influenced as a whole by the entire catalogue of music you happened to have listened to thus far in life. Opinions of the present are based on a collection of opinions from the past I reckon. There are no rules really. Only common consensus on some frequently enjoyed moments prior to now.

Fair points made, but that's what I love about this cover. It made me think about the underlying emotions they were trying to inject into the song. The dark somewhat menacing chord choices made me appreciate it more.

Lol! I love your adamant, yet reassuring honesty!
I'll admit this is not my favorite cover of theirs, but I'm not sure it's because of the chord choices, but rather it's not my favorite original song to begin with. But one of the things I do love about DL in general is that I never know where things are going, nor where they'll end up, which for me is part of fun of it. It's sort of like wandering (or galloping) through a musical adventure movie, where anything can happen & you've no idea how or if things will resolve. Wait. Jumanji?! Hm.
Usually I find much comfort in familiarity: in music, in patterns, in schedules, in expectations etc. & am not what you would call andventurous. So I suppose I take great delight in the fact that I always can rely on them to provide me a musical WTF was THAT? (in a good way) experience, which usually leaves me with my mouth agape. It's a very safe way for my ear/brain to feel happily ajar? agitated? discombobulated? which normally I take no pleasure in at all. But somehow they always leave me smiling, laughing, or contemplating. The fact that much of their music is cinematic, gives me that feeling that I'm just along for the ride (& in this case on a horse).
And yes, I agree it truly is ok if every song isn't one's favorite, but can still remain partly enjoyable, partly interesting.

Completely agree with the analysis. Wasn't digging the brushes a lot but watching Henrik chord on his 33 string bass was cool. Obviously an old video and I feel confident in saying that what they've grown into now is much more along my liking. Still love me some DL though.

And don't forget that this was put down in their early years so I'm sure they were dipping their collective toes in the water so to speak. Since these many early covers, they have become far more sophisticative musically and don't we love it.( Well I do at least). When you listen to these early covers and see what they've come up with and then listen to the originals, you realise that they didn't have much to work with! Enjoy your honest reactions. Keep em coming.

I've allowed myself to be a bit more truthful about what I really like and what I really don't like (or not as much) about their music. The beat drop on this is bananas, but that's about it for me with this cover. The thing I appreciate about you is that you bring my attention to things I otherwise wouldn't consider and I wind up agreeing with you when I really think about what you've said.

I agree with you. They generally do a great job of re-imagining tracks but for me that went too far. I love that they have the talent and confidence to experiment but for me that just didn't work.

Agreed - not my favourite either. They come across as trying too hard, which is rare despite all their skills and intricacy…but fun that they reused a harmony at the funky end from their short but super groovy cover of ”Hot in here” by Nelly..! 🤩
