Very helpful, very encouraging. For non botanists, the complexities of flower identification especially edible wild plants seems overwhelming. Like so many challenges in life, breaking them into recognizable patterns/groups makes learning manageable. Making a good video, requires lots of preparation of graphics, and subject matter arrangement, lighting, careful sound recording, and camera direction. "It is tough!" "I know" This was a great video that could be a lot better if the camera stayed focused "closely" on each picture for a "pregnant moment". I say that because it sends a signal to the viewer. This image is important to observe closely. Each time a critical leap of new information comes along it's important to define it carefully distinctly to isolate the new concept. The card games are a great tool. Please do more. Millions of us crave new understanding. life only has so many days to take it all in. We need your help. Thanks.

Yes, it was a Lily, now it's a Bunchflower. Most monocot flowers with 3 sepals and 3 petals of similar size and color started out in the Lily family. Botanists knew they should be grouped into separate smaller families and proposed up to 70 different families, but found it difficult to draw lines that didn't conflict with one another until genetic research enabled more accurate grouping. Nevertheless, you still have to determine that it is a Lily-like flower before determining which Lily-like family it belongs to, as detailed in my book Botany in a Day. :) www.wildflowers-and-weeds.com/Plant_Families/Melanthiaceae.htm

I have seen your book recommended quite a bit and it does look like a good approach. I was taught families in my plant taxonomy class as well. You've chosen some excellent families for this video. I wasn't aware of the edibility of Brassicas! I do somewhat question the value of the "Lily" family. I guess I'm not sure how it gives a lot of taxonomic/human uses types of information as the group is so broad. Even when I was learning older school plant taxonomy we distinguished between Liliaceae and Amaryllidaceae. But it appears you're lumping those together? Maybe learn them as monocots instead? Or just stick with the Onion subfamily? I think I will be adapting this few families approach to my ID botany lab this year. I had been teaching taxonomic keys but I think they are a little difficult for a course that only has a tiny section on plant identification. I think I may add the Buttercup, Ranunculaceae to your list since it is so easily confused with the rose family, and many members of that family are very toxic. But I will continue to ponder. :)
Botany in a Day APG does break the Lily-like flowers down into separate families. The card game and the book work from the premise that you can recognize Lily-like patterns, then key them out to the proper families from there. :)

I am too worried to be confident of identifying plants as safe just given by their family names. Like you later mentioned the Lily family was split Into various families and I am not certain of any unknown yet plants that might be exceptions.
Thankyou, you are a fabulous teacher. Greatly appreciate you creating and sharing this succinct and tremendously informative video. Very warm thanks from Queensland, Aus.
Sylvia - Some of the plant families are the same, some are different, but the classification is the same. For comparison, here is an article I wrote about Botanizing New Zealand: www.wildflowers-and-weeds.com/Plant_Identification/New_Zealand/index.html
Yes, they are included. In the color 6th edition look at the base of the phylogenetic tree on page 16 and see the plant families covered on pages 50 - 53. :)

This was a very enjoyable video. I had already bought the book, but it had been sitting on the shelf collecting dust since my service-connected injuries started getting worse and worse. This is a great tutorial but isn't death camas part of Melanthiaceae family rather than lilaciae, though they are in both in the liliales order
:) www.wildflowers-and-weeds.com/Plant_Families/Melanthiaceae.htm
i was reading your book, and i came over your video, oh my gosh! thank you so much for writing such an awesome book.

Cannabis belongs to the Hemp family: www.wildflowers-and-weeds.com/Plant_Families/Cannabaceae.htm

We got the cards and have loved them. My 6 year old is learning it easy.
@@claremorgan6033 Okay, terrific. I'm glad you got the cards!
Thank you for sharing your gift ...

I am too worried to be confident of identifying plants as safe just given by their family names. Like you later mentioned the Lily family was split Into various families and I am not certain of any unknown yet plants that might be exceptions.

is the classification of plants the same for Australia?
Sylvia - Some of the plant families are the same, some are different, but the classification is the same. For comparison, here is an article I wrote about Botanizing New Zealand: www.wildflowers-and-weeds.com/Plant_Identification/New_Zealand/index.html

Loved your video and passion for plants, made it very clear and easy to understand!!!! Thank you!!!
As I was reading your book, I noticed that Magoliids and Basal angiosperms are not included. Is this because they aren't under monocot nor dicot?
Yes, they are included. In the color 6th edition look at the base of the phylogenetic tree on page 16 and see the plant families covered on pages 50 - 53. :)
