I saw this in theaters and the power went out for about 20 minutes when it got to like 1:10. and the kid behind me spilled all her popcorn on me. super fun. extra popcorn for me 😕🤷🏼♀️
Pixar's writers had a heck of a time convincing Disney to let them make this movie. Disney was concerned about merchandise sales, that no one would want to buy a toy of an old man, but I'm so glad the creative team held their ground and made it happen.
I loved how they made it about an old man. You don't really see this type of main character in movies ESSPECIALLY catered to children. I've always loved how Pixar tries to be new and try to make their protagonists something different each time. An old man, A super father in a nuclear family, a bug, a toy, a monster, a fish (who's also a father), and so on
around the time I saw the movie I was told that Russell was supposed to represent the child carl and Ellie were supposed to have which is both sad and touching
I actually don't think it's nearly as simple as that.... Russell's childhood is essentially the opposite of Carl's. Carl was shy, awkward and more of an observer, but had always someone who got his back and who actively showed how much she loved him (initially as a friend, of course). Russell is outgoing, positive and likes to participate, but he is utterly alone: his mom is gone, and both his dad and step mom don't give him the time of day. But, as children, both Carl and Russell have one thing in common: they love adventure. So, by the end of the film, when they learn to love and accept each other, they give each other what the other needs. Carl assumes the role of a parental figure, outwardly showing how much he loves and cares for Russell (especially in the scouts ceremony). Russell rekindles Carl's love for adventure and, more importantly, for life, something he had lost ever since his wife died. Russel is basically the child IN Carl.
The fact that you grow so attached to Ellie when she’s only in the movie for 10 minutes that it makes you cry when she dies speaks volumes for Pixar’s writers.
UP hit me so bad when it first came out; my grandma had passed away just about two months before the movie came out. My grandpa and I went to see it together and suffice it to say, it was a rough night after that intro.
@Xernea Yggdrasil I'm 😢 terribly genuinely sorry for the death of your grandmother fam. But she's resting now and no longer in any pain from this ungodly world 🙏
My husband of 28 years had recently passed away when a nephew asked me to take him to see this movie. I can’t tell you what happened after the opening. I hated this movie for years.
I don’t really cry at the beginning… it’s more the part where Carl looks through Ellie’s journal and sees she has added photos from their life’s and “Thanks for the adventure, now go have a new one”. THAT MAKES ME BAWL MY EYES OUT EVERY TIME
I’m happy I saw it at home. I had to turn it off and cry for an hour. I kept saying to my husband “why would they do that? What is wrong with those people?” It was shortly after I gave birth and I was a little hormonal.
Same. I was with friends and the hole theater was full of teenagers who were pretty loud (and a bit annoying in my opinion) but in that part in the beginning you couldn't hear anything. ANYTHING. Not even people's breaths. Everyone was so shocked. After a while you could hear people trying to hide the fact they were crying.
When this came out, I remember a joke about how this movie told a better love story in 10 minutes with no words than Twilight did in four books. 😅 There was a fan theory that Carl actually died in his sleep the night before he was supposed to go to the retirement home, and the rest the movie is his journey to the afterlife. Pretty sad, but kinda interesting.
Pause right at 5:05. Ellie has art supplies on her side table, as a set up for showing she was adding the new pages to her adventure book Carl saw for the first time at the end.
It is universally recognized that this intro in itself is a masterpiece and could have been a short movie on its own. Now one more person on this planet knows this, and cries x)
My best friend bought me the 'adventure book' but as a scrapbook for my 18th birthday. She started filling it up with our memories and pics of our close friends and left me to fill the rest of the story ... truly the sweetest gift I've ever received
I watched this with my Mum at the movies when it came out. I remember nearly all the adults (including me) sniffing (bawling) and reaching for tissues at the doctor's office part. The kids in the theatre didn't quite understand but that whole silent movie at the beginning was and is still one of the most beautiful, devastating and masterful pieces of cinema to date.
When the movie was in theaters I took my son while my wife was taking a girl’s weekend. I cried when Ellie died. My son turned as “Shh”’d me. A week later my wife wanted to see the movie and she cried too. Still one of our favorite movies as a family.
Legitimately one of the funniest movies Pixar has ever made. Also, the most brutal film opening montage ever. That opening 10 minutes has you grinning, smiling and then just gut punches you, kicks you in the teeth, curb stomps you, and then laughs while it steals your lunch money. Best joke in the whole film... during blue car/red car... Dug only sees grey cars. Cause dogs are color blind.
I always liked the fan theory that Russell's father is that real estate developer from the beginning of the movie that wanted to take Mr. Frederickson's house.
Maybe Russell wanted to go see his dad and his dad pushed him away and told him that there was an old man nearby when he knew Mr. Fredrickson would dismiss him too :(
In case you missed it, when Carl and Russell were talking at the campfire, he mentions that his parents are divorced. That’s why when you hear the name Phyllis it’s not his mom, it’s actually his dad’s girlfriend.
19:44 I am dying at this part lmao On a more serious note, the fact that he let his house go and it landed perfectly where Ellie wanted it next to the falls might be one of my favorite movie shots ever. I am crying just typing this
Ellie is the house. Her spirit lives inside it. That’s why the balloons lasted so long-they represent the strength of their relationship. And why the kid stashed away underneath the house-he was the kid Ellie always wanted, giving him to Carl. It also explains why Muntz died the way he did-the house and the balloons killed him. Ellie wasn’t about to let Carl and the kid die, not if she could help it.
Oh yeah, i grew up in a Muslim country and an Arabic child Channel played it multiple times, because it was beautiful regardless of religion plus islam judaïsme and Christianity do have some things in common to justify playing it
This movie throws a lot of real-world issues at you very quickly during their conversations, like how Russel makes the comment “Phyllis isn’t my mom” when he was talking about his dad in the middle of the movie. It took me a few watches to catch that one, and when I did it hit hard.
I saw this when it came out in theatres as a teenager and it made me bawl. It still makes me tear up every time. Everyone says the beginning makes them.cry, but the part where Carl discovers the extra pages of the book is what gets me the most. And the ending credits. All the cute happy pictures of Carl and Russel spending time together makes me emotional too
Everyone always cries at the beginning of the movie, but I always cry at the end when the house is sitting on top of the waterfall and Carl will never know he made it.
25:07 Russel- "To be a man, you must be swift as the coursing riverrrrr, With all the force of a great typhoooooon! With all the strength of a raging fiiiire, Mysterious as the dark side of the mooooooooon!"
UP breaks your heart only to rebuild it and then stress it out, break it when he gets mad, and then hypes you up and finally makes you feel so gushy 😭 Honestly such an amazing movie! (it also took me forever to give it a try)
I know everyone felt the beginning of the movie, I was sad as well, but I watched this as a child and I cried so much more at the end, first when Russell's dad didn't show up and then when grandpa did 🥺 also, I'm not watching this ever again
I will never get away with NOT crying with that 2 minute montage. It’s like “titanic”- I could watch it twice a day, everyday and it will still break me
I went with my parents and my son to see it. That montage? My dad turned to us, crying eyes eyes out, saying, "I thought this was supposed to be a KIDS' movie!"

This movie gets me every time. I saw an alternate fan theory a couple years ago where they said that Carl was the one who passed, not Ellie. The adventure represents his "heaven". Russel is representative of the child they lost and placing the house at the falls was Carl making good on his promise to Ellie. He didn't know about her completing "The Adventure Book" because she finished it after he had passed and placed it in the casket. Made it a totally different and even more wonderful movie to me.
The beginning of this movie is so sad I cried when ellie died and when they lost their child, even though there was no words spoken the feeling and moods were clearly set. Great reaction billy I loved it.
I remember going to see this in the theater with my mom as a grown ass adult and in the first 10 minutes while I was tearing up I looked around and saw all these dads that took their kids to see this whipping tears from their eyes and sniffling, so yes, this is on of Disney/Pixar's most emotional movies. This Coco and Wall-E are the ones that get me everytime no matter how many times I've watched them.
Paradise Falls is based in “El salto Ángel” in Venezuela, people can go to Canaima and experience the different Saltos that there are. It’s an amazing experience. In fact in the flight ticket it says Venezuela. I remember we Venezuelans were so proud because Disney was inspired of our Salto Ángel. ☺️
I've never met a single person who watched this and didn't cry or get teary eyed during the opening scene. Every single person can relate because nobody wants to lose the person they love most in the world
The opening kills me - but not because she dies. It’s because I struggled with fertility issues. The devastation of that shot from afar into the doctor’s room as their dream of having kids dies is still a gut punch, even now that I have two beautiful daughters - I remember the fear and heartbreak too well 💔
@@Fanproductions there’s a part where Russell is talking to Carl and he says “Phyllis isn’t my mom”. From the first time I watched it, it implied to me that he was primarily being raised by someone else. Plus, if you watch the lady’s body language at the end, she seems supportive but still distant.
One of the things I most remember about UP is how my dad reacted to it. He related maybe a bit too hard to Russel's family situation, so he has said that he doesn't wish to watch the movie ever again. It makes me a little sad that it hurt him so much to watch the movie.
Cried in the theater? Hell yes! Six of us went together, and there wasn't a dry eye throughout the whole Carl/Ellie montage. There's so much to love in this movie, that it ranks at the top for me. Loved your reaction!
This movie’s whole opening sequence WRECKED me the first time I saw it!! This was great seeing your reaction totally not knowing what you were getting into! 👍👍
#Bingers Monster House!! its old (2006) but the animation is really good for it's age and the plot is just bananas and absolutely hilarious Written by Dan Harmon, starring voices from Steve Buscemi, produced by Spielberg's Amblin Animation, and it was nominated for an Academy award but lost to Happy Feet
I literally cry during the opening montage EVERY TIME I see it. And again when he opens the Adventure Book to see their photos. This is definitely one of Pixar's best.
I was here replaying the construction guys voice wondering why it sounded so familiar. His name is John Ratzenberger and has basically been the voice for Pixar from Toy Story, to this movie, even Incredibles 2 and Finding Nemo
Russell briefly mentions Phyllis. When Carl asks him why he calls his mother Phyllis, Russell says that Phyllis is not his mother and doesn't go into any further detail. Phyllis must be the woman seen at the end. So is she like a nanny or foster parent? I doubt she is a stepmother since his father is not around. So sadly, it seems his mother had died earlier.
Another comment suggests that Phyllis is the Stepmom and that she’s the reason that his father is rarely around. The woman you see later is probably just his Mother, who has divorced his father.
@@Chemeleon15 That is an interesting possibility as well. Because Russell didn't say anything about his mother, I wasn't sure . It would be nice to think that the woman at the end is his mother. Russell was longing for a male role model, so it's great that Carl stepped in.
Billy: I'm going into this completely blind.
Me: Lord....they bout to break this man's whole heart in the first 2 mins

The devastation of that shot from afar into the doctor’s room as their dream of having kids dies is still a gut punch, even now that I have two beautiful daughters - I remember the fear and heartbreak too well 💔
"Those balloons are stronger than any relationship you've ever been in!" 🤣 Funny enough, I wouldn't know 😑
“Grandma noooo” I can’t stand him🤣🤣🤣.
At the end, that wasn’t Russell’s mom. It was his nanny/caretaker. :(
What makes you say that? :O
@@Fanproductions there’s a part where Russell is talking to Carl and he says “Phyllis isn’t my mom”. From the first time I watched it, it implied to me that he was primarily being raised by someone else. Plus, if you watch the lady’s body language at the end, she seems supportive but still distant.
oh please, now I'm crying even more 😭
I thought it was implied that Phyllis was Dad’s new girlfriend/wife.
@@marybethgoeggel4658 Same 🤔
Oh I cry whenever I see Ellie and Carl's life in the beginning of the movie. Every. Single. Time
Doug was saying grey all the time when they played the car game in the end because we all know they colorblind:))
“Those balloons are stronger than any relationship you’ve ever had” 😂😂
I went and saw this movie a week after my grandma passed away. I was like "oh man, a Pixar movie, I could use a pick me up"...
I'm sorry for laughing as hard as I did when reading your comment
One of the things I most remember about UP is how my dad reacted to it. He related maybe a bit too hard to Russel's family situation, so he has said that he doesn't wish to watch the movie ever again. It makes me a little sad that it hurt him so much to watch the movie.
"grandpa NOOOOOOO" THAT WAS ME AF 😂😂😂 *violently sobbing into hands* lmaoooo
Billy: “Did you cry when you watched this?”
Me: “Ummm, yeah…like a hungry baby I did. Every. Single. Time.”
I’m tearing up. This makes me cry. billy screaming “not grandpa!” Make me smile while I was crying.
Totally cried with this one. And this time when you said grandma noooooooo made me cry again. Thanks for that 🤣🤣🤣
The voice of Mr. Fredricksen passed away August 29th too. I literally bawled my eyes out.
#Bingers Monster House!! its old (2006) but the animation is really good for it's age and the plot is just bananas and absolutely hilarious
Written by Dan Harmon, starring voices from Steve Buscemi, produced by Spielberg's Amblin Animation, and it was nominated for an Academy award but lost to Happy Feet
I was just going to say that this reminds me of it 🥺
Honestly I was salty that it lost to Happy Feet. Monster House was so good!
The beginning of this movie is so beautiful, it makes me cry every time I watch it.
I love that all the grandparents, become your grandparents in these reactions 😂😂😂
I literally cry during the opening montage EVERY TIME I see it. And again when he opens the Adventure Book to see their photos. This is definitely one of Pixar's best.
i’m going to keep requesting it, #Bingers The Princess Diaries
Imagine him with ‘foot popping kiss’!! 😆😆
@@marybethgoeggel4658 omg 😂😂😂😂
At the end of the movie, it's not Russell's mom. It's... I don't remember her name, he talks about her, it's his nanny basically.
Billy: with Disney, you know something is gonna happen
Me: this is Pixar.. its worse
Your laugh is sooo contagious. You were laughing at him climbing the rope and you made me uncontrollably laugh as well
Again, your laugh is pure serotonin for me ❤️ I would die if I ever got to watch a movie with you 😂😁
I was here replaying the construction guys voice wondering why it sounded so familiar. His name is John Ratzenberger and has basically been the voice for Pixar from Toy Story, to this movie, even Incredibles 2 and Finding Nemo
Honestly at this point I mostly watch your reactions for your laugh 😂😂 It's so contagious, and I just LOVE the way you laugh! 😆
It breaks my heart, in a good way, when I see the house ended up landing on Paradise Falls in the end.
Who would dislike this video? Billy and the movie up is exactly the serotonin we all need!
I sobbed like a baby the first time I saw Up. The beginning was so unexpected.
