You can add Plato & KOReader support in addition. You get options like adding dropbox support, export highlights to HTML, JSON and services like Joplin, Readwise. Read news from news RSS feed or even configure wallabag to read news. Download books from OPDS catalog for free.

I thought I was tech-savvy until I tried to install Nickelmenu and KOReader. Was so freaking confused about everything. Thank you so much for this tutorial!
This totally makes Kobo the ultimate choice in Ereaders. I was so annoyed at the display of PDF books till I discovered KOReader. It's awesome.
Glad that you also found it useful. Cheers,👍
Thank you so much for sharing a sample config file! I was on the verge of giving up after trying to create my own config file several times only to keep getting config error messages. Now my Kobo Forma finally has dark mode 😊
And my Kobo Libra H20, too!
Thanks for creating a video tutorial on this topic. Much appreciated 👏
Thanks for watching 👍
Thank you ! For me this alternate OS is really the best of the market , with many gesture customization, much better than usual kobo , even boox has not this rich interface
thamk you so much for the tutorial
Thank you very much 👍
Thank you my friend. May Brahma and Shiva protect you!
Thank you
Thank you! 😊
Thanks for the wonderful video. I have a question - how did you arrive at that menu under Plato @ 4:20 mins. I have Kobo Libra 2 by the way
Thanks man
thank you for made koreader and plato newest guide, i hope you make detailed comparision beetwen koreader and plato especially manga performance.
Will try to make it.
Cheers 👍
So, the other day I just installed Koreader. Today I went ahead and followed tutorials on putting in Nickel Menu. In short, I got Nickel Menu on bottom right, but the old "Home Menu" of the top left is gone. Do you know which file is needed to bring that back? I have preserved some old files I think on here.
Home is on the left and NickelMenu gets added to the right. Are you saying you no longer see Home on the left?
Are you unable to annotate with the stylus on your Kobo Sage while reading via Plato or KOReader?
Annotations will work only on DRM free books. Also if you have KEPUB format then it will not work. What is the book format that you are trying to annotate on? You can refer github.com/koreader/koreader/wiki/Highlight-export
I have a Kobo Libra 2 on which I read books that the library lends to me. What extension can I use to download my notes and highlights from ebooks?
I will do a video on this. I have sold my Sage and ordered Libra 2. Once it arrives , i will check if joplin or readwise will work or not. In the meanwhile you can check out kobonotes www.thekobonotes.com/landing
@@DigitalInterest1 Amazing, tks
Hello! What device are you using in this video? By the way, does the writting work on koreader?
Its Kobo Sage
Hi, simple question my friend after installing this, is there a way to unistall this app, or it would stay in the device for ever?, i got a glo hd and i just recently found out about this apps, i mean the normal reader has worked great but this app seems to give me more power and specially the PDF since there are a lot of books in pdf that are not in epub or similars.
Yes ofcourse you can create a fill uninstall like /.adds/nm/uninstall, then reboot your Kobo. The .adds is hidden so you need to make sure you configure the show hidden files in windows operating system
I start by making you the complienti for the video.
I have a problem that I think also appears in your video: from minute 3.18 to 3.21, on the left, in the My Books category, you can see icons that appear in the form of pgn files and which are nothing more than the icons installed by Plato or Koreader . in any case they are very annoying: there are hundreds and they are added as if they were books ... is there a way to fix this thing? I thought it was a mistake in my installation but from what I see it happened to you too ...
I thank you in advance for any help you can give me.
Hello and thanks again
Luigi
Hi,
I will check that and if any fix exists then i will reply to you.
@@DigitalInterest1 hello, did you ever find a fix for this? unsure how to get all the files that aren't books to not show in my books and unread books section
@@pspsmallz No as of now there is no fix. I was thinking of changing the file attributes to hidden but that did not work out.
hi sir, i checked out both kindle paperwhite 5 and kobo libra 2. i found kobo libra 2 to be a better choice between both of them
the problem is that kobo does not serves in india. can u please suggest some ways that i can get a kobo
Hi,
The customs duty that you would pay on getting Kobo delivered internationally would make it a very costly purchase and totally not worth it. The only way would be if someone can buy it for you and bring it to India. You may want to look out for people who are travelling on business or pleasure and while returning they can get it for you. Nearest location to India where you can get Kobo is Singapore
@@DigitalInterest1 thank you sir for the quick reply. You are right the customs are quite expensive 😅. I hope I had a family member overseas. Anyways I'll see if not possible I'll go with the Kindle pw 5
How do I configure wallabag, please help in this regard.
1. Create account in wallabag.it
2. Activate your account and login
3. Under My Account, Click on "API Client Management"
4. Click on "Create New Client"
5. You will get Client Name, Client ID, Client Secret. Make a note of that by copying it to a file.
4. Now go to KOREADER on your Kobo Device
5. Click on Settings > Wallabag
6. A sub menu of Wallabag will open Now click on Settings
7. Click on "Configure Wallabag Server"
8. Under server URL specify app.wallabag.it and fill the Client id and Client Secret that you noted earlier. Username and Password will be your Wallabag account.
9. Now click "set download directory" and select a folder where news article will be cached
10. Configuration is now complete
11. To read article, from Settings > Wallabag , click on "Retrieve news article from server"
i really hope you'll be able to help, at about 1:20, when i eject the kobo, it doesnt reboot on it's own. I just shut it down and turned it back on again and i'm not getting the nickelmenu next to the more menu...
im fairly certain i followed all the steps, also it's a kobo clara colour
really hope i can figure it out lol
If you do not see the menu, then please check if nmconfig is still present if not then try again. You can use the sample config file which you can download from the link in the description. Also try with latest version as that color model is new github.com/pgaskin/NickelMenu/releases/latest/download/KoboRoot.tgz
Please, I didn't understand the second part of the configuration. In which directory or folder should I extract the Plato 0.9.27 download?
Hi,
You need to first extract the plato zip file on your computer then the contents you need to copy one by one to the root file system of your kobo device. When you connect your device it will appear as KoboReader double click and you will see the list of filesysyem. Now copy the files as shown in the video. You can pause the video to see how i copied from my computer to kobo device
@@DigitalInterest1 I'm trying to do the same procedure as you do in the video. But when I extract the plato 0.9.27 file on my PC, it doesn't show up those same icons and folders that you selected in the video between 2:37 and 3:08 minutes. There are two more files to download (source code), should I unzip them on the pc too?
I appreciate your attention. I don't know exactly what I'm doing wrong, I only managed to get to this second part and I can't finish the installation.

Hello. How can I setup KOreader to sync to the cloud my notes and highlights? How can I make a KOreader cloud account where I can sync every highlight, bookmark and note?
KOReader does not have its own cloud app. You need something like JOPLIN or READWISE and then use the KOHighlights tool from github.com/noembryo/KoHighlights
@@DigitalInterest1 Thank you so much! Will try to do when my Kobo arrives!
It was a bit difficult to follow the instructions: I had to search other threads to find out how to install the.tgz file (disable the automatic file opening in Safari), and since Dropbox was ultimately the reason why I needed Nickel Menu installed, there was no direct link to it in this video. I would suggest adding these two, otherwise it did help me install nickel menu. Thank you
Thanks for the feedback 😀
is there a better note pad? I now just use the beta functions.
Notepad in nickelmenu?
Why does koreader and other options appear twice in the nickelmenu?
I guess when i created the config file, i added 2 lines which were already there
I've kobo sage. I want to install the koreader for better pdf experience. Would you please help how can I get it? Thanks in advance.
Hi,
The steps are in this video. If you follow along then you will get plato and koreader
@@DigitalInterest1 I'm unable to open KoboRoot.tgz into. Kobo folder & my kobo sage doesn’t reboot after ejection. What's the solution please?
@@Ashimcda you dont have to open the KoboRoot.tgz file. Once downloaded you need to copy that to the .kobo folder in your sage device. Then once copied you need to eject the device and it must reboot. If you follow these steps but still the device does not reboot then right click the koboroot.tgz file after you have downloaded it and see if it shows blocked. If that is the case then unblock it and then copy it again. Here is the sample screenshot www.google.com/search?q=file+unblock+windows&prmd=ivsn&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiYpOeElMb3AhWe4XMBHRqBBPoQ_AUoAXoECAIQAQ&biw=384&bih=627&dpr=2.81#imgrc=icGhJl7Ixs6x4M
how do i remove the nickelmenu from my kobo? i did the uninstall file.. but my kobo is still showing the "NickleMenu" to the right of the normal "Menu" button
Create a new file named uninstall (without any extension) inside the .adds/nm/ directory on your Kobo device. To do this, connect your Kobo to your computer, navigate to the .adds/nm/ directory, and create the new file there. If you already done this then ensure show hidden file is enabled in windows OS to ensure the file is created as intended.
@@DigitalInterest1 thank you, I appreciate the help! I tried this but for whatever reason, my kobo still was displaying the menu in the bottom bar. I ended up doing a factory reset which finally removed the menu.
02:22 from this minute I'm lost.. there's no kfmon image , I copies the PNG of koreader and icons folder to the .add folder but on the kobo I see the icon but it doesn't launch the reader

I kept getting the config error, until I saw you mentioning that I had to delete the extension. Now everything works fine. One question though: how do I prevent the config file from showing up in My Books? 😅
I will have to research that. I think setting the file attribute to hidden should do the trick. If i manage to achieve that i will reply here
Hello; Is it possible to configure nickelmenu to autostart koreader ? If that's true, how ? Thanks
Hi,
Not sure I got your question. But when you click on Koreader from the start menu, if will start on its own. So basically if you put both Plato and Koreader as shown in the video then you can switch between them from the menu and it will immediately start.
@@DigitalInterest1 Thanks but what I want is to power up the kobo reader, and see koreader without having to click on the nickelmenu option, without having to touch anything more than the power button...
@@run1492 i see. No that is not possible as its not the main OS. It runs as a service on top of Kobo OS
keep getting config error, did add a file without extension in the nm folder and added just 1 line: menu_item:main:dropbox:nickel_open:library:dropbox
did manually update aura h20 to version 4.35.20400
after restart stil gives config error
Try with the config file that i have provided in the description box.
@@DigitalInterest1 I added the line in the doc file which was already there after install and now it works
@@sylvainvanuffelen2272 they say not to edit the doc file though...

Dear Sir, I learnt so much from you here. I've been trying to configure GoogleCloud to my Kobo ClaraHD for the whole day until I saw your video, I'll install NicleMenu instead! I'm stuck at making the hidden file .kobo visible, I tried Invisible App, I can't get it to work as I'm a newbie. Could you please instruct me how to show hidden files? I use Mac. Thank you so much for your time, I hope to hear from you soon :-)
Hi,
thanks for watching. To show hidden files if you are using macOS:
1. On your keyboard press the “Command” + “Shift” + “.” (period) keys at the same time.
if you are using Windows OS:
