I was struggling for hours as I wasn't able to perform any boolean operation, and then I saw this video and was able to do it within seconds. Thanks a lot!
Thank you Rhonda for such a clear and simple explanation of the difference between the difference. Making sure to unify objects with Path Union. Cheers Howard
This video is helpful. But when I try to ungroup the objects (image is text against a background) and then path union them, it changes the whole image to a solid color shape. What am I doing wrong ?
Lmao you explained what my teacher couldn’t lol she just kept telling me to re start my computer like what the hell some pro. Thanks this will help getting my job done
Thanks for your videos. I'm having a problem where I can't type into a text frame like in your video. I create the box with the text tool but when I click inside to set the cursor to type the box disappears. Also I can't flow text into a frame. The text just disappears when I go to text flow to frame. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Thanks.
For Me it was that I selected more then 2 objects to take difference and it was taking difference from all of them, so I took them one by one in a pair.
Now I can stop beating my head on my desk haha! I also found that some imported objects refuse to convert to paths until I convert them to patterns first.
I have done exactly what this video teaches, but "Path Difference" still doesn't work. One object (path not jpg) on top of one other object (also a path). The only path command (for two objects) that works is "Path Combine." I restarted inkscape just to be sure it wasn't a bug. Any thoughts?
Inkscape is a vector program so if you mean an image such a a jpeg or png, (you can’t). A jpeg and png is a raster image so you would need to trace it to make vector layers of the raster image or change the color in a raster editing program. I have some videos on how to do that in Gimp which is a free program, just look in my playlist.
Thanks for the tutorial. I need a little more in-depth help if you don't mind. I have an image from the internet and Im making changes to it and then using the "new" image in the center of a circle to create an earring. Can you help? Im so frustrated
Guys if it still doesn't work, then it is because you are using an image. Select the picture and go to Object->pattern->object to pattern. Then it will work!
Another step you might need to take with more complicated art is to convert your strokes to paths and objects to paths, then union before you difference that with something else.
I’m sorry if it came off that way it wasn’t my intention. I like to keep my videos short and to the point without a lot of chatter that way the process doesn’t get lost in all the chat.

Great vid! Path difference works with photos in Corel. How do I do it in Inkscape? Thanks!
Your image has to be converted to a path. Path> trace bitmap. Sorry for the delay I wasn’t getting notifications on my comments.

Make sure nothing is grouped, path difference.won’t work on groups and make sure the original if you traced is not also selected.
Like an idiot, I guess two objects were grouped. I could have sworn I had ungrouped., but didn't
@@schmekis1 it happens!

So what do you do for an image with color?

Another step you might need to take with more complicated art is to convert your strokes to paths and objects to paths, then union before you difference that with something else.
You would have to union if there’s more than two objects because difference only works on two objects at a time.
COOL. dont have to sound so sarcastic and smart though. still getting an error. one of these objects is not a path
