Outstanding work in those conditions, in the street, bright sun, one handed, customer looking over your shoulder. Even the best mechanics would not want any part of that.
Excellent video. Ivan. I learned the hard way in my younger drive ability days. Before I blame misfires on fuel or ignition. I check relative comp with trigger with amp clamp. FLS in tailpipe, intake vacuum, crankcase pressure, both running and cranking. One test may find something that another test may miss. Wishing you and Evans all the best
Mark Ferraro After the comment "another fault introduced during the repair process" I was belly laughing for a good half hour, then I read your comment and broke down again. Before starting the engine I thought this was a serious video. Clearly some sort of joke. Once the engine started I was clear what was wrong. Good funny video. Love. Just hope it isn't really customer that had to put up with the initial garage incompetence. WOW WTF well funny. Some divs about.
Eric O at SMA did a loss of compression study on a Honda V6 recently, just one cylinder was bad (from memory cylinder 4, front on passenger side). It might have been a help to the customer to determine whether the compression loss was due to valve seating issues or worn piston rings but in the absence of a smoke machine or compressed air you did a great diagnosis Ivan. At least the customer now knows that all the engine ancillaries work.
That was one mean diagnostic session. The relative compression test got to the core of the problem.Very handy turning the injectors on and off with the scanner.I also liked the coil and injector wave form. Can't whack a car doctor who knows what's up with the patient !
Thanks Tom. Looking back at the case study I probably should have started with the compression test, considering how terrible the engine sounded mechanically!
Excellent diagnose. the 3.0L v6 older engine I think is better engine I think. I have one 205k miles, 19 years old, just now started having issues, misfire , it was #4 coil and changed all 6 plugs also. now its the trans P0744. been working thru that. Did ATF Service with Valvoline Synthetic ATF and Lucus its been alot better going to change the ATF again after 5K miles to get more of the old ATF out, since its black again already. been doing good I had to clear the code 4-5 time now its been 500 miles since last time I cleared code and hasn't come back. suspect it was sticky TCC solenoid and shift solenoid(s) . That sounds like a broken valve spring or lifters issue
You guys have the same personalities. Awesome diagnostics. I will use that info on my 97 maxima. Or at least the methodical train of thought in the diagnostics. Process of elimination. Thanks guys.
All that part swapping for no reason ..killing me.... I had a friend do that a few years ago ..he finally just bought a new vehicle.. but swapped out all but the computer ..all because he didnt want to pay my friend 100$$ to diagnose LOL
There are some good shops in the metro area but they are few and far between,Hacks as some subs call them are every where in the area. Lived there 25 yrs of my life.Go get your money back for that motor or sue them
Hi Ivan couldn't really tell from the glare but where was the ignition synch at in relation to TDC? I thought it looked off but the glare got in my way.
Nice work on that one Ivan. It's always fun to meet subscribers. Too bad the outcome was not better for the guy. Maybe some kind of cardboard shield would help to reduce the glare?
thanks Ivan, one way to combat glare is to do screen recording on the verus like the master scanner danner, but then again that requires more work! cheers sandy
I think they make a laminate that will stick on the screen that cuts glare. I remember seeing it being sold for desk/laptop computers. Can't speak personally to how well it works, but from the pics I saw of it, it looked like it worked pretty good. Easy and cheap enough solution I guess. I feel bad for Evans - that garage took him for a ride. Mechanics like that give all of us a bad rap. That garage should work for the government - 2 peas in a pod ...
that was cringing to watch, those prior repairs were brutal! I really hope that customer will get their money back or get their original engine back... every step of the way that person was hit with incompetence and a lack of knowledge. someone suggested a throttle body for a misfire? a shop throws an engine at it without verifying compression! and let's it go without doing the same, AND with that sound! holy crap!! that's the kind of work that gives Indy shops a bad rep!!!
My 2008 Nissan is having the same issue. I have replace all spark, and Ignition coil. I have also clean all fuel injectors. Now it's running lean, and is still misfiring at P0303 and P300. What could I do to resolve this issue? Please advise. Thanks
If u checked the head gasket on B2, It might have helped,The minute he said it smoothes out off idle, I knew it was a valve problem. Most probably the used engine was originally replaced because it had overheated.
Hey awsome video brotha! I had the same exact issue and sound coming from my 2003 nissan altima 3.5. Just by hearing it I know the timing chain or the timing chain tensioners are bad. Nissan has a bad reputation for their timing chains going out. The timing chain causes a lot of random misfires.
Hi Ivan I enjoyed the video too bad about the swapped engine. As far as the glare issue I have a smoked plexiglass screen I cut from a damaged boat windshield, I glued a couple of velcro tabs to the top of my laptop and the edge of the sheet. When i sit outside I attach the plexiglass screen to the edge of the laptop and prop it up with a plastic prop stick. Works great as a shade and best of all did not cost an arm and a leg. Hope this helps and you can find something suitable. Brian & Shotty
Snap On should offer a hood for it's scanner? Google tektronix hood I used two different hoods testing and repairing MRIs world-wide. The oscilloscope and spectrum analyzer hood would be too small for your use but you'd get the idea.
After trying regular tunup (spark plug, coils), they should try valves adjustment if it dosent has automatic jydrolic adjuster, after that check timing, xheck VVT if it has one.
ive had so many things cause a misfire on my 99 maxima its hard to keep up. mass air flow sensor, plugs, coils, orings , bad fuel but never had a cylinder drop nevermind 2 of them in a bulletproof vq engine check other shit man
3 words: Timing Belt Failure... He's got compression issues on 2 cylinders, and (on my phone) the valve train sounds like shit - and this is an interference engine...
Yes. A 10' x 10' is light and easy to set up solo. I will message you the link. And for the rest of those wondering, I dont sell pop tents, I work on cars as a serious hobby
The recommendation I would give is consider getting your own shop. Does not have to be some modern building inside the city. The shop I go to is built outside the man's house and very successfull because of their honesty and good work reputation. He is approaching retirement age and still working some but mostly his son runs it. Most times I go there , I see a half dozen vehicles there for service. Just my opinion, but would love to see you in a controlled environment as the owner / operator. Most people don't mind paying for good service, others want something for nothing or close to it. Just my opinion, and talk to Eric O and see what his advice would be.
The recommendation I wrote had nothing to do with what you wrote. Wasn't questioning your suggestion at all. Maybe I should have written it on its own as to not rile you. Since I'm unable to move it, accept my apologies. Was not aimed at you.
Big Dog50001 the sad thing is a lot of people are like that and will justify themselves to the hill just because they don't want to pay a diagnostic fee. I see it a lot with some new customers..It's hard to break them away from the AutoZone/Advance Auto parts changing me mindset.
I have the same car and the same noise I had the cylinder and spark plug change and it Still sound bad could it be I need to change all the cylinder and spark plugs..
You can try a polarizing filter to reduce glare, but it may also interfere with the LCD as they are polarization based. Otherwise low tech a shade, or high tech screen capture software.
If the "repairs", changed engine, injectors, coils, throttle body, etc... does not fix the problem, how can the customer be obligated to pay for all of that since it didn't fix the problem? Doesn't the repair shop have to pay for it?
Good question...I think the customer did a lot of the repair work himself. The repair shops just "guessed" at the problem and told him what it "might" be. So in this case I don't blame the shops at all since they didn't perform the work!
Hello sir I have Nissan Maxima 2006 I had miss fire then my friend replace spark plug and one coil now my idle is high I replace trottll body still having problem please any idea for me
The injector drop test showed that the engine slowed down the same when #4 and #6 were disabled, so their compression might have been similar to the rest.
So many things could cause this most of the time it’s coils or plugs or o2 sensors and cats cause it to run rich. Those are the easiest fixes some of the bad ones are timing chain problems like jumped or the rear housing leaking oil Nissan is a love and hate relationship
This Vid reminds me of dealing w/ a 96 buick /GM 3100W/ ax 200k . I watched a Video where a guy intentially blows up his 3100 engine. Its a tough call people. I Recommend watching "Death of a Salesman".

Why didn't they change the gearbox? Won't that cause that misfire? Why is he even doing a compression teat when he know the misfire is not engine related. Why don't he figure out the cause of the misfire which I think is fuel delivery issue since it is P0300. Outstanding work in those conditions, in the street, bright sun, one handed, customer looking over your shoulder. Even the best mechanics would not want any part of that.
David Kupferman yeah the customer over your shoulder part won't work for me
They didn't shoot the parts canon at it, they fired a parts cruise missile at it!!
LOL
That car endured a full on parts assault!
Nuke it from orbit. Only way to be sure.
Yup too many substandard parts too I bet.
😂😂😂
Nice quick diagnosis Ivan. Very cool that you got to meet another subscriber. Thanks!
Nissan doesn't give misfire counters even in the factory scan tool (consult 3+)..i work for Nissan.
Awesome video keep up the good work.
Auto Fix Pal don't need misfire counters when you can fit a broken second hand engine to speed your diagnosis.
Excellent video. Ivan. I learned the hard way in my younger drive ability days. Before I blame misfires on fuel or ignition. I check relative comp with trigger with amp clamp. Love diagnosing stuff and using the scanner to pinpoint problems without replacing every damn part hoping to finally fix the problem
Dude you make house calls like a doctor from the old days - THAT ROCKS!!! 😎👍
Wow , what a adventure that was ! Nice diagnostics ! Like the on the fly Cylinder Drop Test ! Nice !
Definitely not worn piston rings...that compression hump was missing entirely. Plus all the valve clatter was a big clue ;)
Might be a broken valve spring or clogged valveshaft.
This customers experience is the reason why customers do not trust mechanics and want to see EVERYTHING!
I would check for exhaust manifold leaks on 4and6. Not enough back pressure can cause misfires too. If he's using the same exhaust system that is
That was one mean diagnostic session.
For clare, umbrella comes to mind. cool video!
@2:59 - yo I swear that maxima dude's doppelgänger walked by right behind them!
skunnysss - I saw that to. L.o.L
i don't even wanna know how much money was lost in this car
Excellent diagnose. the 3.0L v6 older engine I think is better engine I think. Last First LOL
Can you live stream the verus screen to your laptop, and then display as a pop up?
Where do hack shops get all the parts cannons cause surely they replace those too?
All that part swapping for no reason ..killing me.... I had a friend do that a few years ago ..he finally just bought a new vehicle.. but swapped out all but the computer ..all because he didnt want to pay my friend 100$$ to diagnose LOL
Partswapping without good diagnosis is only afordable when you have a tree in your yard on which greenback's are growing.
Mr Ivan do you have any videos on how to perform a relative compression Test ?
Wow. So many parts swapped and messed around with by incompetent mechanics. Car was repaired to death it seems.
man I feel sorry for this guy , they screwed him hard
Me too
This video is a classic! The first two minutes of start, "I love it" Cannon...
Holy shit he bought it twice with what he spent on parts 😂😂😂
ke mamada panxito 😅🤣😂
Wow....a 5 hour drive to help out a subscriber! Ivan....I didn't know u made free house calls.
Nice of you to help a brother out. But I feel sorry for the guy.
hum what about the valves that sounds stuck open ...
There are some good shops in the metro area but they are few and far between,Hacks as some subs call them are every where in the area. Lived there 25 yrs of my life.Go get your money back for that motor or sue them
For your glare did you try a anti glare glass that they use on picture frame over your scanner screen ????
However, what was the initial middle cause?
Hi Ivan couldn't really tell from the glare but where was the ignition synch at in relation to TDC? I thought it looked off but the glare got in my way.
That's because the sync was on cyl #6...one of the ones with no compression lol
Cool, screen had so much glare I couldn't tell, lol.
Good job, in minimal amount of time. Danner would be proud. Keep going.
Are u gonna come back to Brooklyn, would be gracious for a top notch diagnosis on my 15 pathfinder
Lol... That guy Evans works on my Genesis. Excellent mechanic
Actually Evans is the mechanic of last resort in this case, not the owner of the poor Maxima ;)
Ahh, 10-4 - thanks for the correction. Sometimes my comprehension skills are lacking ... :)
that was cringing to watch, those prior repairs were brutal!
Customer might have done a lot of the work himself too...but yeah what a mess!
are the injectors bank fired? just wondering why the injector power balance seemed to show all cylinders where working?
Good question...and I don't really have a good answer to that unfortunately.
My 2008 Nissan is having the same issue. I have replace all spark, and Ignition coil. I have also clean all fuel injectors. Now it's running lean, and is still misfiring at P0303 and P300. What could I do to resolve this issue? Please advise. Thanks
3M makes a screen protector/ antiglare for around 30 bucks if I remember right for laptops and universal cut to size
Subscribed! Thanks to Eric O & I have a Nissan but what shop replaces an entire engine without doing a simple compression test?!
Nice work
If u checked the head gasket on B2, It might have helped,The minute he said it smoothes out off idle, I knew it was a valve problem.
Most probably the used engine was originally replaced because it had overheated.

Leo Flores LOL exactly the same problem. WTF you had a misdiagnosed injector and mistakenly paid for a broken engine to be fitted. LOL
Hi Ivan
I enjoyed the video too bad about the swapped engine.

Feel sick for the customer, at least he knows who to call in future.
Great video. Thank you. Liked & subscribed!

A $50 pop up portable tent, sets up in 1 minute. Keeps the rain drops off also.
That's a good idea...any specific recommendations?
Yes. A 10' x 10' is light and easy to set up solo. I will message you the link. And for the rest of those wondering, I dont sell pop tents, I work on cars as a serious hobby

How do we get in touch with you, for working on cars
Website
Who needs diagnostics when you can just fire the parts cannon at it....
Big Dog50001 the sad thing is a lot of people are like that and will justify themselves to the hill just because they don't want to pay a diagnostic fee. I see it a lot with some new customers..It's hard to break them away from the AutoZone/Advance Auto parts changing me mindset.
Big Dog50001im totally stealing parts cannon from you.
I have the same car and the same noise I had the cylinder and spark plug change and it Still sound bad could it be I need to change all the cylinder and spark plugs..
How about getting a cardboard box. Put the Varus inside the box and us the flaps to help shad the screen?
You can try a polarizing filter to reduce glare, but it may also interfere with the LCD as they are polarization based. Otherwise low tech a shade, or high tech screen capture software.
WOW this is what happens I guess. Not a nice ending for the poor guy at all.
first of all replacing only 2 coils was a bad idea, should always replace the lot. is there oil in the spark plug tubes? common on these
To minimize the glaze see if you can get a circular polarizer filter for your camera.
If the "repairs", changed engine, injectors, coils, throttle body, etc... does not fix the problem, how can the customer be obligated to pay for all of that since it didn't fix the problem?
Doesn't the repair shop have to pay for it?

motoYam82 totally agree. I get people like that sometimes. They try to pick your brain and then go do the work themselves.
Hello sir I have Nissan Maxima 2006 I had miss fire then my friend replace spark plug and one coil now my idle is high I replace trottll body still having problem please any idea for me
Nice vid. One question which may be stupid though.... Why not make a manual PSI compression test with the gauge? Just to see how bad they are.
*Absolutely.*
0 psi...or very close to it.
Definitely bent valves
Ohhh I see. Didn't know you tested them. Poor owner.
The injector drop test showed that the engine slowed down the same when #4 and #6 were disabled, so their compression might have been similar to the rest.
How can I get in contact with you other than on UA-cam
Try the big three upgrade all of your grounds must have top notch grounds,it did wonders for my 02 maxi
Sometimes a good fix on the screen glare is to set it inside a cardboard box turned on its side.
Intake manifold gasket
Maybe 4 and 6 cables crossed up?
i wish if you could upload your videos with better quality like scannerdanner
Hey Ivan they make a privacy screen protector for tablets that is mat that should minimize the glare
So many things could cause this most of the time it’s coils or plugs or o2 sensors and cats cause it to run rich. Those are the easiest fixes some of the bad ones are timing chain problems like jumped or the rear housing leaking oil Nissan is a love and hate relationship
out of gas?
Yep to minimize glare i set the screen to the brightest setting
That's as bright as she gets!

2014 nissan maxima sv when warm or after one hour driving begins to idles high and battery drains then limp mode anyone please help
Need a code scan
poor guy . get the old engine back in or get shop to pay for cylinder head job after u do leakdown test. just bring it to eric o :)
there are really nice anti glare screen protectors, i would definitely put it on
IVAN,thanyou for all the videos and info u show keep it up and cheeeeeers.
Make a shaded box for the skater!
The cat's on all those 2.5 and 3.5L were junk and known for clogging and P0300👌
Sounds horrible.
Nice,a can of engine restorer could fix it lol
I had a 2002 altima what a piece of junk!.good luck get rid of the car, bring it to South Main Auto. Eric will fix it!.
I desperately need help with my 97 Nissan Maxima!!!!! #4 misfire....
He should have kept the first engine in the car
Why didn't they change the gearbox? Won't that cause that misfire? Also sometime rear bench seats can have a coronal effect causing inferometry and misfires can be produce via smelly pooh pooh reason. I you attach the scope positive to the cars antenna and scope negative to a dowsing rod held in the left hand while wearing protective hearing defenders you should be able to find all the faults making millions
Drugs are bad...mmmkay?
Why is he even doing a compression teat when he know the misfire is not engine related. Why don't he figure out the cause of the misfire which I think is fuel delivery issue since it is P0300. A cylinder specific on nissan cars is usually faulty PCM, how do I know? because I rebuild car computers and nissan vehicles are notorious for bad ignition driver IC and also although not related to misfire they are also notorious for bad idle control solenoid driver IC which shorts out due to overloading cause by stuck solenoid
Use a pop up tent to film under
@2:52 Living In The Matrix!!!
dude needs a gopro strapped to his head so he doesn't have to carry that camera.
Coils coils coils lol always the ones under the intake😂
No parts can fix the motor except a rebuild or another motor. Motor is busted
Made that is a bad engine. That sucks. Bring the engine back.
too many chefs ...........
J ai une Nissan maxima automatique qui démarre bien mais n accélère pas
