Nobody: What pedals are you currently using?

@@AD-kv9kj Mick used the Fulltone Deja Vibe. David Gilmour used a Uni-Vibe. The Fulltone Deja Vibe is a copy/clone of the original Uni-Vibe. Hendrix used them a lot. Machine Gun from the Band of Gypsys live album is a great example of a Uni-Vibe.

Hey Mick, I believe we might have worked together at Future Publishing during the same time! I worked at the Bath office from early 2005 to early 2007, first as deputy art editor at PC Format and then as Art Editor at ImagineFX. Did a few photoshoots with Joby at the Future Photo Studio just a walking distance from the office along the canal, and remember him well, great guy! I think he later married another photographer from Future, right? Such a great time that was, made good friends and loved the atmosphere at the office. A pity I was not a guitar enthusiast then, would have loved to have met you and visit the Guitarist office. I took to the guitar for real about 2 years ago and have been practicing daily, it's been life changing to start turning a real love for music into something palpable in my hands. Keep up the great work! Best, Marcelo

Watched this for the third or four time this afternoon and subsequently required to think about the smallest board I could make with existing tools. Yes, its very Five Watt World, yes it's 'tight' (I'm Northern, that's fine) however isn't this the right way to go? Think about how you can squeeze the absolute most from each pedal to protect you during a set. If you feel comfortable in your surroundings - know your gear - you can perform/express/enjoy.
Just four pedals, so many sounds, so much expression.
    Thank you, Mick.

Two years ago, I was so much hyped about a big pedalboard. Finally, I sold some of the pedals because I don't feel having a lot due to the signal loss, also just used a lot a delay+reverb, a reverb, two drives, a booster and compressor. I would take the tremolos and reverbs from the amps.
Small pedalboards are really nice. And I'm trying to go in that way.

I just put together my Pedaltrain Classic Jr. I put a Vitoos DC 8 isolated power supply underneath the board. It has A & B ports that are 9/12/18V 1000mA each then 6 more 9 V 300mA. I have one reverse power for my Eventide Pitch Factor. One BD-2 and Xotic SP in front of the amp. BiYang Stereo Reverb, TC Transition Delay, and Nu-X Modcore. I use another board by the mic stand, That has DigiTech Drop, remote for Eventide Pitch Factor. After the Drop signal goes to the wah. Then it is sent to the BD-2&Xotic SP on the other board, I just built. Also, on the mic stand board has a TC Body Rez, Parametric EQ for a piezo signal to a D.I. Box.

Interesting, I mounted a PSU on the bottom of a pedal board using velcro as shown here. After a few hours of use the PSU warms up enough to make the adhesive go soft and the PSU falls off under gravity - tie wraps to the rescue. Lesson learned, do not use adhesive on the bottom of a pedal board for things that get warm!

I'd like to mention that, for all your humble welcomings of celebrity players and your genuinely starstruck reactions to their playing, you guys are able to host them for a reason. They respect you guys as players and they recognize the huge influence your platform has. Please do pick up your guitars and play with Josh Smith and Joey Landreth etc... etc...! You guys have massive musical vocabularies and are fabulous players. Mick soloing over a Joey Landreth progression would be priceless. Dan chopping heads with Josh Smith would be revelatory. Push yourselves to compete on that level and you're on that level. You have access to those players and they'd love to push you guys to new heights. I want to see an improv video pairing you guys with these guitarists. Nothing planned, all improvised off of each other. Nothing to it but, to do it!

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  5 років тому

That's very kind - thank you. However there is a respect we show to artists. If they invite us to play, we'll play. Plus, I can't speak for Dan, but when I'm in TPS presenting/producing mode, I find it next to impossible to play with any flow or 'music' because keeping the show on track requires a totally different headspace to being musical with the guitar. It's weird. But yeah, if they'll ask, we'll play. It's important to know that we're enthusiasts and they're artists. In my head there is a colossal gulf between those two things. Cheers!

Hi Mick, I know it's That PEDAL Show but after seeing several of your boardbuilds, vlogs and all regular shows (thanx so much, I learn a little something every time I tune into this channel and get inspired to play) I have to ask: Could you do a show on cables? What cables can you use from your guitar to your board, what cables work well as patch cables, is there a "better" cable to use from your board to your amp than the in you use form your guitar to your board, how do contraction, impedance and length affect the cable, and so on... Quite frankly I can't get my head around all the info that's out there, so if you could break it down (preferably with diagrams and sock puppets ) that would be great!

Good board, good sounds. Thanks for sharing! Similarly, I have used a PedalTrain Metro 24 to make a grab-n-go/experimentation board. I found that the Cioks DC5 power supply fits nicely underneath and provides enough juice for the 5 or 6 six pedals that can be arranged on the board. Currently I have the Carcosa fuzz, Morley Maverick wah, Way Huge Saucy Box, Catalinbread Bicycle delay, and TC Electronic T2 reverb, and Earthquaker Devices Nightwire trem on there. No room for a switcher, but so far it sounds fine. All these pedals (even the Morley) are of "normal" size-not mini, not large-and replacements can be made easily.

The power invertor lead sticking out the side of the fuzz is killing my ocd though...
    Two options -
    1. Put the invertor lead under the board and run another lead with a right angle head up to the pedal (it doesn't matter where the invertor goes between the power outlet and the pedal. Or
    2. Don't use the invertor - just wire that power lead into the gig rig isolater in reverse - positive into negegative and vice verca.

Interesting to see the whole process from what the purpose is, to which pedals, to how to power, etc. It is quite nice to have a quartermaster, all the generator gear and various length, high quality patch cables just lying around ;-)

For the fuzz power cable... why not do the polarity reversal under the board and run an angled extension cable to the pedal? I know it is adding an extra connection (which I would duct tape together) but that dangling bit looks way more risky...

I'm in the process of putting together a mini board myself. However, my approach it's going to be to copy a Chemistry Works holey board design albeit much smaller and out of wood. I'm a bigger fan of using zip ties than Velcro. I'm probably going to go with all mini pedals including a Peterson tuner, Tube Screamer Mini, a first-generation tumnus, an mxr carbon copy Mini and a small power supply. I'm hoping this will work well and a very small stage environment.
It's for that situation where you literally get a corner of the pub and your drummer just had to bring the double bass kit or 15 cymbals and the singer thinks he Freddie friggin' Mercury or Axl Rose and needs room to jump around. Also a smaller board is a smaller target for the drunk that just has to tell you how great you sound as he spills on the floor.

Some cables like for example planet waves the positive conection is surround with a black tiny plastic that is condutive for help better negative ground. That back plastic is on top covering the white positive plastic, If u not take that black plastic and u let touch in the jack capsule u will end up with some hiss.

try strymon power supplies. every output is isolated and you have the option of 12v and 18v. all those loose thin power cables clipped in / under the board is scary! ive tried the gig rig power solution and with an open board like this its not a good idea! good luck with the gig though.

@@ThatPedalShow I like the GigRig solderless system for power, but I feel it can't compete against the simplicity, versatility and space requirement of a CIOKS DC7. I totally understand that since you are comfortable with (and already own) the system that's what you go with. I just wish there was an updated version of the GigRig system that would make powering "special" pedals a breeze. Let me finish by saying that I enjoy your videos very much and think that they bring good to the world. Thank you!

In case anyone is struggling with power supplies that fit under smaller pedaltrain boards, the Strymon R300 fits underneath with zero modifications. I use one on my Metro 20.

    • @scou5e

Just bought a Nano+ and found the cheap power supply I have doesn't fit unless I do a ”Mick mod” and that ain't happening! Shame that The Gig Rig power supply requires the same modification so I have a Strymon R30 on order and no messing with daisy chains i.e. power -> distribution -> isolator...etc
The Gig Rig products are great (i’m sure) but a little over engineered for my simple needs/skills and it also doesn't fit under the Nano+ 😢

    • @thepennydrops.

Agree, I looked at the Gig Rig stuff and figured over kill (too complicated for my brain) for 5 pedals.
I do wonder when Pedaltrain will jack the height of their boards up. Seems an obvious requirement for many people.

Mick, Because the too short problem is not infrequent I would suggest another modification that you could attach as needed with stronger mushroom head velcro when needed, just another stick of wood to run under the sticky outy cables, just to extend the safely kickable range of the board, since it seems another 20-40mm on at least one end would have added a helpful margin of safety.

On those evidence audio cables, they’re great, but you really have to strip off as much of the black layer as you can. It’s conducting. You have about 1mm gap only of white insulation which could run you problems on those cables... I’ve made that mistake and was a nightmare to troubleshoot.

So awesome! The only advantage of a bigger board is the option to have more sounds. Everything else is in favor of a smaller board - Lighter, More appropriate in most situations, easier to set up and troubleshoot if needed etc. - So if you can find the sounds you need in 4-5 pedals, get a small board! :D
