finally someone talked about online stuttering i thought that im only one struggling thank u so for sharing these tips it is really helpful ,Another Tip : look at the roof when u talk its weird but it reduce stress & SMILE even though ur vid is off.
It’s so cool that you want to become a speech and language pathologist. I have a long time to decide my career but I’ve been wanting to help people who stutter like me and I emailed my speech therapist to ask her how she became one so that I can start learning about it early. When I’m doing online school I always have something in my hand when I’m speaking because fidgeting or playing with something help me stutter less. I don’t know if other people do this or if it’s just me. Random question: Have you ever tried listening to music and speaking at the same time? When I was in third grade my teacher let me do my whole presentation with headphones on and she recorded it and I barely stuttered. Third grade was even the worst year because I had anxiety and my stutter was really bad.
That's so interesting!! I think that's a really cool idea to be fidgeting with something while you talk, I'll have to give that a try! I have found that listening to music while speaking does help! Honestly just having any background noise in general really helps, it takes a lot of the pressure off of me. Whatever works for you is so awesome! It's cool to be aware of these little things that help :)
i also stutter! i’ve never heard about the music while speaking thing but definitely want to give it a try!! do you feel like there’s any certain kind of music that helps you stutter less? like does rap for example make you stutter less than country or is it all kind of the same?
Emma Steffen you definitely should try it out! I normally just put on any music that I like. Try more upbeat songs rather than slow ones. Try it out and let me know if it works for you!
Thank you for making these kind of videos. I thought I am the only one who can feel inferior during starting a conversation and stuggled this annoying stutter when I was in College. And they always tells me to relax and don't be nervous. They didn't know it is an actual condition and not being JUST nervous.
I'm so happy to be able to help!!! I hope they're able to get some useful knowledge out of this! I'm only a year older than them so I'm sure we have a lot to relate on :)
This comment is completely unrelated to the video but I’m really needing someone to talk to who understands what I’m going through. So today, I had theater class (it is my first day back at school). In theater, we were playing games. Well in this particular game there was one person (me) doing an action that others in my group had to guess. While playing this game, you have to talk to the other people while doing the action. In this particular game, I stuttered on a word really bad. I could not get the word out my mouth was like frozen on the word. A girl in my group then guessed that what my quality was was that I was faking a stutter. I simply said no and sat down and did not participate the rest of class. In retrospect, I wish I had stood up for myself more. But it sickens me to think someone would 1 point it out like that and 2 think I would use a stutter as a joke. This ruined my entire day to the point that I have been crying for nearly 7 hours over it. What is your advice for this particular situation or simply someone acknowledging your stutter in front of a large group or insinuating that you are faking it? And how do I build my confidence to a level that I can allow comments like this to not affect me? Sorry for how long this is, just really needing some advice from a fellow stutterer.
Hi, I m glad that you shared your story and my advice, as a person who stutters too, would be to smile back at them. You stutterd, so what ? I know it’s hard to be positive especially when you are surrounded by so many people and you stutter but next time try to throw them a smile back. “ Yea, I stutter sometimes, so what ? “. It’s important how we choose to behave in situations like that and my friend, trust me, I ve also had days when I was crying because of the fact that I stuttered and one persons observed that. Try to have a different approach. If you are positive about it, your friends will automatically start to smile too and you will get over the moment. Also, have you thought about letting know your classmates that you sometimes stutter ? By doing that you will feel more relieved and you will somehow earn their respect for you because you are honest about yourself and you have the power to acknowledge it and as a result you will create a conection with your public because they will see how brave you are. Just try this next time and see how things work out. And don’t give up on theater class, it’s a great way to express your feelings and emotions and by talking more and more, you will see a development in your speech sooner or later.
Razvan Marcu Thank you so much for your response! I really needed that, especially from someone who also stutters and experiences similar situations. I will definitely take your advice. I appreciate it so much!
Hi Emma! Sorry for the late response! Graduate school has been SO busy! Thank you Razvan for the great response too!!! I totally agree. Having a positive approach is one of the best things you can do. Knowing your worth and understanding that one person's opinion of you doesn't define who you are will help overcome some of those fears and anxiety from people's reactions. I often take an approach where I 'own' my stutter, if someone comments about it, I think of my stuttering the same as knowing I have brown hair. There's nothing I can do about it, and I don't want to change it, so I try to rock it in my own way and I have confidence in it. When you exhibit confidence in yourself, other people recognize that, and it shows how strong you are as a person.
