Scott, thank you for showing me the CORRECT and HONEST way to prep a car and seal it. Tired of all the greed. Give your customer the very best educated job you can. Make it look absolutely beautiful and keep it beautiful for a long time. Even if I have to take a price reduction. Doing it this way will bring in repeat business and referrals. Doesn't take that much longer to do a beautiful job, nor will the cost of materials be that much higher. Manage the time you have, and find out how much extra time you have. Present the car like a fine, expensive piece of jewelry as opposed to a cheap watch at Walmart. Show some care, respect and honesty to all your customers and everyone else. They will beat a path to your door, because no one is doing it your way, the old fashioned way.
Scott is an old fashioned guy. What a breath of fresh air!

Watching your videos is more than just getting from "A" to "B" which you can do in 5 minute video. It's like attending a seminar on how to think like a detailer. It's learning the "inner game" of why you're doing what you are doing which actually changes your whole experience of what you are doing, because you are no longer just going through the motions...

OK in summary he says: Car wash soap doesn't remove all the contaminants, so the clay does more work and simultaneously doesn't get the panel totally clean. So, if you clay bar with wax you are pushing grime into the paint.

its not paint he's putting that clay on, its the clear finish, thats what makes the vehicles gloss, you don't any product to make it glossier, the manufacter already done it for you, you all can get sucked in thinking other products will make it shine but its just a gimmick to take your money, unless your blind and you can't already see the gloss on the vehicle. thats why the manufacters finish off thier cars since the mid 80s with clear coat, thats for those in the know, and the ones that don't know, but you can spend your money on those prodcuts that won't do anything but take your money is all.

If its wasn't for Obama, your hourly wage would be low and high for the unethical Christian right building $10 million parking structures while the poor are frightened away by their armed guard thugs. Oh yeah, Christian churches dont pay taxes. But dish out lot of crap.

      @UKSportsFan 5 років тому +9

Gnet Bird...wow, you are really ignorant, absolutely clueless and totally lost. Wages had remained stangant for decades until the last couple of years under the Trump administration. Oh wait, you're talking about FAST FOOD EMPLOYEES and their "Fight for $15" nonsense that ended up ushering in a lot of automated jobs taking the place of human jobs. Yeah, that was brilliant on their part, wasn't it? So while your hatred of Christians is obvious, so is your ability to lie. Nothing you said is true or makes any sense.

    Hello Scott
I been detailing cars for 5yrs and I learned alot from others and knowing the fact of claying. To me its the best thing ever, instead of getting a whole new paint job. removing everything off the paint and having it nicely clear & smooth. Then polishing/wax and honestly I rather take my time doing the job right. Never doing any fast jobs. For the money I want my clients to have smiling faces. Seeing your videos gots me learning a few more and thanks for that Scott.

Communications is an incredible thing, as a mechanic for many many years almost 30 actually before I switched because of my back I am the salesman extraordinaire because I tell the customer why, that's right I tell my what they need and why they need it nut not just selling them a product that they don't need but explain to them why they do need it that being said Scott I think what you said was important but I will say that you could have cut this video into 10 minutes and still got your point across extremely well I will keep watching you but it is hard sometimes because you keep going over and over and over the same thing and beating it to death, keep doing the great videos I love the information you've taught me a lot and I greatly appreciate that God bless you

Amazing video and you nailed every point perfectly. This is just another point to demonstrate to your client you are the honest professional expert and that your not going to do a sales job on him or her and screw them doing it. Learning to educate your customer on proper detailing will in the end give you customers for life. Doing a sales job on them may gain you a customer short term up till the time a slicker sales pitch comes along or untill they run into a professional that will lay out the facts clearly and honestly.
Fact is there are some people that are constantly drawn to the slickest sales pitch or the too good to be true. BUT when they learn they were screwed or not given accurate info and service these are the ones who will scream the loudest and try to damage your reputation the most. Its very useful to learn how to read your customers and weed out or possibly convert the ones always falling for the too good to be true Many years of experience has taught me that the more i limit the clients who constantly fall for the too good to be true the more profitable I will be and the happier I will be. This type of client is never easy to maintain and majority of time you will spend too much time cleaning up his or her mistakes after you educated them in the first place.

In general, we are a gender who knows less about cars than males so I have made it a point to learn more about my vehicle and how to care for it in order to extend its life and appearance . Well in all fairness, the solution for a clay lube is simple & you had the easiest solution in the video. If you dont want to waste more $ on detail spray.... take a bottle of clean water, some say distilled, you could use Spring water, or purified water, + add a few drops of your favorite car wash liquid like the Meguiars Gold Class in the video.
(Turtle Wax Ice Car Wash is nice too).
So intuitively if your clay is removing/ shearing off contaminates from your clear coat, what better fluid to flush it away- but the same surface safe soapy water you used to wash the vehicle in the first place?

I'm a older guy - This reminds me of converting my wife who loved a tub bath to a shower! The ring around the tub is your dirt / oil & skin. And you want to sit in your dirt for , , , however long? Take a shower, suds up and rinse off and you will be clean. The same goes for clay baring paint. Why in the hell would keep dirt suspended in the wax and then reattached it to the paint? If you don't care about your customers, continue. Show the customer you care. Spend the time and produce a quality job! Be proud to charge a fair fee and hold your head up high! Loved the honest opinion! Well done Sir!

Scott, I've heard some people use plumbers putty for a clay bar and I've also heard of using modeling putty or those 3M removable mounting clay strips that you can get for a dollar or two. Of course the plumbers putty, modeling putty and the mounting clay strips would be a lot cheaper choice than a detailing clay bar. You ought to do a side-by-side comparison of the four of them on a Auto Hood you picked up at a junkyard to see which one is and the pros and cons of each one. And if there is a viable substitute for auto detail clay bars. just an idea if you're next video

Hi Scott, I love your videos and learn a lot from them. I'm not pro but I do love detailing my own vehicles. I basically do what you did in this video but I use Prepsol for the final wipe down. I'm very interested in possibly using one of these new Ceramic coatings for my next detail. I'm not really educated on these coatings and I'd love if you could do a video on them, how you feel about them, which ones do you recommend if any and which ones can be purchased by a DIY guy like me. I've noticed many of these products such as Ceramic Pro has to be applied by a certified installer. I don't want to go that route, I'd rather do it myself. I'd appreciate your professional opinion on this subject. Thank you!

A man with integrity, you don't see that today. Great video sir, I've never clay bard a car before. Now how many times can you use it roughly? And the bar you had there with the steel in it, wouldn't it be bad now? Anyway great video i learned something, and like I said sir, it's good to see someone in the Business who is honest.God bless.

    Another great video :)
why would anyone ever think that it's okay to use a spray wax as a clay lube and ALSO as a wax.
It's a spray wax, not a real wax or a sealant like Duragloss Or Collinite 845.
I like how you do things the right way.

Scott i took a few of your ideas amd made them my own. I like using the purple power vehicle and boat wash...its very slick....i use that as my clay lube and instead of using it in a spray bottle...i have it in a foamer nozzle...it stays on the surface longer and added to the lubraicty...it works great and the soap breaks down traffic film bc its not pH neutral....leaves the surface very clean before applying my sealant

Ok, so if we should not use the spray wax as lubricant to clay bar the car, what else should I use when I want to use a clay bar on it?

    • @Scoots71

It's in a spray bottle, it's simply called clay bar lubricant.

  • @stephencannon3140

Two questions Scott........1: What is IPA? 2. To make sure I understand the process correctly. Wash, rinse, clay bar, rinse again and buff dry with Microfiber towel. The reason I say clay bar before drying is to take advantage of the wet surface to help the clay bar glide. I do keep a bottle of quick detail spray to assist if a area does dry. After that I rinse entire vehicle again and dry. I know a long explanation but are you with me so far?
Now that my method is clarified.......
Wash, rinse, clay bar, rinse, dry.....This is where the paint prep comes in right?
After the paint prep is wiped dry
Now I can go into correction procedures, scratch, swirls, chips etc....
Then polish, wax, and finally sealant?
    Final recap
Wash, rinse, clay bar, rinse, dry, paint prep, corrections, polish , wax, sealant, cold one and probably Advil for my arms and shoulders.
What is the difference between polish and glaze and where would that fall in if glaze was used?
Note and I don’t see it as wrong or right but seems to work for me.....I will was entire vehicle at same time but for clay bar, paint corrections, polish, wax, sealant etc...
My method is I will correct, polish, wax, sealant one section of the vehicle the entire process then move on. I usually break it into four zones, roof, nose (hood, front fenders, bumper), center (doors) and finally tail (rear quarter panels, trunk/ lift gate). My logic is maintaining the current protection of area that may not be done in one day. (Weather, daylight, other life’s tasks etc...). I figure any protection is better than none. I also understand the clay bar to remove any wax so panel is only protected by clear coat. Instead of getting the entire vehicle 25% done I can get 25% of the vehicle fully done and protected.

      IPA is basically rubbing alcohol.
And you need to use a sealant before waxing. You seal the paint, then add the beauty/depth

  • @jaynay4696

Although I love the simplicity of Yvan Lacroix' wash-clay-wax idea.. I am with you on this. Always prep the surface before applying any sealant or wax!
I do a 50% IPA mix and it gets grippy indeed, do you know of DuPont's Prep-Sol alternative that are also available in Europe?

I just clay barred most of my pickup today (got interrupted). It's 17 years old, never been waxed, clay barred and never garaged.
I started with Mothers detailer as lubricant and then changed to diluted car wash soap. The soapy water worked much better.
In my mind, and I'm obviously not an expert detailer (LoL) but I know my way around cars, it makes absolutely no sense at all to try to wax and clay bar at the same time.
BTW my pickup looks great, I'll give it it's first wax in a day or two.

U can put hair light scratches that's why after claying a car you have to polish it then wax and also sometimes I will add in a hand glaze before I wax a vehicle depending on the car color that one extra step can really enhance the paint

I agree with you. I don’t use that method. I wash vehicles with Clean Slate soap and then clay it. After I clay it I wash it with a detail soap and then I compound (if needed) then polish. After that step I wash it a 3rd time and then wax it before I use a UV sealant.

It's much easier, economical, and faster to just use a super concentrated dish washing liquid like Palmolive or Dawn (blue) with warm water in a bucket and use the clay as a "wash mitt" to go over the whole car. I stick to the mindset that wax is like cologne; you only put it on once you've showered, brushed, and combed and are about to walk out the door. Wax is the very last step of any detail, other than a synthetic sealant.

I know it's popular to believe that dish soaps will clean a car but dish soaps leave a nice film behind. Especially Dawn. The idea of doing a clay bar is to remove all that. Not to put a film over the dirt.

Ivan and the guy from rag company do not advocate this process. however they do use ONR as clay lube and while they are doing a no rinse wash and Clay then he wipes it down and uses spray wax. but I see your point and it's a good one about clean surface and wax bonding to paint.
