  • Hello everyone to Architect Reflects Channel!
    This time, I explore the idea of designing a transparent “glass- bunker” in the Dune universe. This video is part of a series where I experiment with pop culture and architecture. I want to see how different influences can spark new ideas and possibilities.
    If this made you even a little bit curious let me know what you think 🙂

    Absolutely mesmerizing, ingeniously done. I think I would have some difficulties to have a good night sleep underneath the stone, knowing it's tethered to cables. But as a writer, I wonder how it would be to write about someone who lives in Dune House, who sleeps in that bed not once but every night, and is somehow changed by it. Anyway, thank you for the movie.

    I am one of those who read the books as a teen, not just once but over and over. You nailed it. I would sleep well under those stone knowing if something unimaginable happened I would never know about it. Unlike seeing a car heading for me and knowing it was over.

    Worthy concept. One man’s Monumental is another’s Brutalist. The music track obscures narration and hardly needed.

    Such a cool idea. I think something like this would be good in an environment where tornadoes or hurricanes happen frequently. Maybe not the several 20 ton blocks but something like that. Built in that drops down to protect the glass. As well as a design to mitigate high wind speeds.

    Possibly the best architecture I've seen in 50 years. Perhaps you could figure out how to drop that huge roof as one large shell (instead of the two counterbalanced stone shields). It could seal into the floor. But I just had to say this is some of the very best design work I've seen in decades. I honestly don't think I'd live in a house like that, but there are many who would, and this would be the way they'd try.

    Outstanding video presentation! I'm truly captivated by how you've seamlessly integrated contemporary architectural design with the style and practicality of a dwelling designed for the planet Arrakis from the film "Dune". The ingenious integration of air handling through load-bearing columns and the strategic utilization of subterranean cooling is commendable.
    Furthermore, I am particularly interested in the comprehensive approach to water usage within this architecture, given the profound value of water on Arrakis. I'm really looking forward to hearing more about this. Thanks in advance for your response!
    I wish you continued success in your future videos.
    Best regards
    Chris

    • @architectreflects
      @architectreflects  9 місяців тому +3

      Hi Krystoffranci, I appreciate your kind words! As for your question about the water it depends how strict we are about this subject. Technically it is not a problem in a modern, air tight building to keep and reuse the water we have in the air. The same goes for recycling and cleaning waste water used in the house. So the only 'concern' would be how to get the water into the house. If we look at Arrakis in particular we are left with Frank Hubert's ideas about water sources like: deep mountain reservoirs, water vapor in the air and water located at the ice poles. To be fair I just assumed we would be lucky enough to have one of those deep underground reservoirs to work with :) I know it is not the best answer but this is the aswer I have😬

    • @krystoffrancl
      @krystoffrancl 9 місяців тому

      @@architectreflects Thank you for the response. I completely understand the intended concept, but I'm more curious about whether it would be beneficial to incorporate a tank or elements related to water directly into the architecture itself as it is important for the people there? Or would you prefer to keep a concealed water tank underground?

    • @architectreflects
      @architectreflects  9 місяців тому +1

      @@krystoffrancl I think you are absolutly right that it would be extremely importnat to have it incorporated in architecture and store it 'just in case'. Thankfully I planned I huge technical room above the house for all of the installations required for stone shutters. You can see it on the section described as room 9 here www.behance.net/gallery/178703649/Transparent-Glass-Bunker-Dune-House (almost last drawings). I think there would be plenty of space for storing water over there 🧐🤓

    your decision in the design was grea, love the home

  • @MaximGhost
    @MaximGhost 8 місяців тому +1

    That desert home should be covered in solar panels. You'll need the electricity to power the massive fans for your underground heat exchanger. And if the heat exchanger isn't adequate enough to cool down the home's interior to comfortable levels, then you will need the solar electricity for auxiliary air conditioners.
    Air conditioners provide the advantage of harvesting SOME water from the relatively dry desert air. If you have excess solar energy and need more potable water, then you can power atmospheric water generators and harvest water from the air with as low as 15% humidity with currently available technologies. You would also need solar energy to distill that harvested water to make it potable. Extracting water from the air was mentioned in Frank Herbert's Dune as well.
    The solar panels would have to be on the house. If you rely on a solar ground array, you invite thieves to steal the panels when you are not home to protect them.
    If you need even more energy, consider wind energy with the ability to automatically stop during excessive wind conditions to prevent damage to the wind turbines and propellers.
    I live in Nevada and previously in Saudi Arabia ... so I know these things can now be done from personal experience. You just need LOTS of desert energy.

    • @architectreflects
      @architectreflects  8 місяців тому

      You're absolutely right! Solar panels would be essential for harnessing the abundant desert energy, especially for the heat exchanger and air conditioning systems. Thanks for sharing! 😊🏡🌞

    Stunning! Do you have a cost estimate on actually building it. You might consider making use of the vast space above the main floor in the form of a loft utilizing maybe 1/3 or even 2/3 of the footprint. As a former Residential and Commercial real estate Mortgage Banker I can tell you, additional square footage will greatly increase the actual appraised value. I know that's might not be your #1 priority as a truly innovative architect/artist, but I can tell you it is for buyers/owners. Additional square footage DIRECTLY augments dollar value from a licensed appraiser's perspective. The Master Bedroom could be up on the loft with added privacy and views down below. I love the design in general and the location of the desk. Incredible.

    Although I love some of the individual elements that make up this house; the large bronze mural, the large open kitchen, the minimalist, smooth stone surfaces...etc, you couldn't pay me to live there. It's too much of a bunker and not nearly enough of a home.
    However, just a few additions and ajustments could change that.
    -Add columns to the outer perimeter of the facade, in between the large windows.
    -Paint the outside surfaces bright white. Makes it look brighter and more joyful. Keeps it cooler.
    -Properly enclose the bedrooms. Remove the potential death trap of the suspended rocks.
    -Add a roof terrance for stunning, 360 degrees views, pots with plants, a place to dry clothes,BBQ...
    -Add a garden around the house to create a green island in the otherwise lifeless dessert environment.
    The garden could have a terrace and a pool on 1 side. You may want to be able to go for a swim in that dessert heat. If the floor and the walls of the pool are tiled bright blue, the whole garden and house will look more life like, inviting and attractive, like an oasis.
    Bright and dark green foliage from Date palms, Acacia trees, column cacti, Lebanon Cedars, Ferns, Datura plants, Olive trees & Tomato plants would add to that lush, oasis look.
    Herbs and spices like Morrocan mint plants, Lemon grass, Clove trees and fruit trees like Lemon trees, Bergamot trees & Orange trees would add an amazing smell to that oasis, as well as sources of food and shade. Trees could be strategically placed so as to cast shade across the pool and the windows of the house that are exposed to the sun for the longest amount of time each day.
    That could help change this building's look from the "Mausoleum of an ancient king"-look to the look of a perpetually inhabited, maintained and cared for sanctuary and home.

    I like it, very good.
    If I had to live there, I would put in a thick ceiling to protect me from the counterbalancing stones falling on my head. Or perhaps you would just let the cables into the living area and have the stones below it.
    I wouldn't put it on stilts, but put a wall around the base. That wall is at an angle so that you can see the wall's base. Otherwise people could hide there and ambush you, since security is an important factor here.
    I would probably use one of these window blocking blocks to block the door, and also have a lock up top, so it can't be raised with a hydraulic jack or something.
    I like privacy, so I would add a few more walls in the interior. Bonus points are that you can quickly hide from gunfire. That's not as much of a concern in the Dune universe, but still. So I think the house would have to have a square base or maybe a round base.
    Thinking about it, a star fort shape would probably be best in terms of defense. Plus it looks cool.

    As someone who did read the 6 Dune novels as a teenager, and maybe 20 times more since, I really like this design. I love the interior materials and decorations! I believe this is a fitting tribute! Well done, Konrad!
    A few questions.
    1. The stools at the kitchen island - is there no overhang for them to slide under? I think sitting there would be a challenge.
    2. Do the interior bedroom walls extend to the windows? In the render it appears you can walk from one bedroom to another along the glass.
    3. I applaud the idea of shield walls, but I think the gaps between the stones would permit 800 km/hr windows of scouring the glass. Have ypu thought of making a tighter fit, or a monolithic shield that lowers insyead of in pieces?

    • @architectreflects
      @architectreflects  8 місяців тому

      Phew... I always had this fear that someone well-versed in the novels would come along and tell me why it's all wrong..! Thank you! I feel relieved now.
      1. You're absolutely right. In the final design, I'm considering adding a substantial piece of wood that will overlay the stone and create a small niche for the legs.
      2. Yes, the bedroom wall extends all the way to the glass. There's a narrow strip of glass that connects the wall to the external glazing.
      3. I'd like each stone to have independent movement. In the final design, I'm thinking of incorporating a 'tongue and groove' system that should address this issue."

    • @darthceoloc8350
      @darthceoloc8350 8 місяців тому

      @@architectreflects Personally, I think the wood would be out of place and will not match the asthetic. Perhaps cutting out the stone to leav e an overhang would be better. You could keep the outer edges untouched so as not to change the overall shape, just cut out part of the block for the stools to fit.
      A tongue and groove fitting for the drop stones would work better, if you have good control over the stones. The stones may need to be taller to remain interlocked with its neighbors when one is down, otherwise any lateral movement would block the neighbors from dropping.

    Впечатляющий дизайн, очень близкий к образам из фильма Вильнева.
    Идея прозрачности, полного обзора на 360° и отсутствия внешних колонн создает дополнительные сложности, которые могли бы быть решены, не заставляя размещать грузы над спальными местами.
    Возможно, плита с панно требует отдельного помещения, наподобие тронного зала, ведь это религиозное изображение.
    Чтобы пыль не проникала через вентиляционные каналы, в подземной части должен быть водоем, в котором может храниться часть водных ресурсов.
    Вообще все здания с этими элементами в фильме имеют более грандиозные размеры, в основном это части дворца. Предположительно, культура наземного жилья на Арракисе предусматривает масштабные общественные комплексы, а не частные апартаменты, ведь проще построить один замкнутый контур, чем множество, да и обслуживание систем защиты и жизнеобеспечения требует значительного количества рабочих рук.

    I find the concept very beautifully represented, the imposing and monumental size is almost religious. The material is very human bounding and the space' order is almost "Zen". Very pacifying. I dont know if I can slip under that big "Damocle blade" . It can be terrifying or pacifying at the same time, probably depending on your mental state. Those blocks above the beds, I find them disturbingly fascinating. But you would find me sleeping on the couch I think. An aside, I picture downlights beaming out of the bottom of all the blocks that rise and fall around the exterior of the building. Thin pillars of light if you wish, appearing to hold up the blocks.

    It's funny but the hottest temp I saw on my last deployment to Iraq in 2006, was 61 degrees C. A Dune dwelling would be pretty cool. I would make mine a lot different but I love the concept.

    Very original thinking. Brilliant, historically significant. Very courageous. Genius. If you like this, see Wallace Cunningham's work, and that of the late Zaha Hadid.

    It has a will a temple like structure, it has the appearance of an ancient world and yet modern home,you can see what you were looking for in your design,and you can see it. Many Architect tell you what they were trying to do with there descriptions of there desir but you never see it,not true with you it's what you say it is, truly!!!

    Overall, quite lovely. 2 areas that may need to be thought through if this were to ever be constructed:
    1. Garage. Such a house would require a vehicle to transport the owner(s) or guest(s) to and from, and such powerful sandstorms would destroy those vehicles, or blow them away, leaving the people inside stranded. The garage structure could be detached so as to not impact the silhouette, or could be attached beneath the structure.
    2. Entry door. If the entry door were made of a traditional material (glass, steel, wood), it would be destroyed in the sandstorms or, if wood, exposure to the heat. So a stone door would need to be developed. Hinges would have difficulty due to the heat and sand, so maybe a similar application as the stone panels could be employed. It would need to be set back from the stair walls opening so sand wouldn't accumulate to make entrance and egress difficult following the storms.
    But I really enjoyed the presentation and the thought process behind this idea. Good work!

      Thank you for your thoughtful feedback! You raise valid concerns, and we appreciate your suggestions. I'll definitely consider these points, particularly regarding the garage and the entry door, to ensure practicality and durability in the face of sandstorms. Your support is greatly appreciated!

      I think the architect designed this house for Earth as a concept and not actually for Dune which is a fictional plANET, however it would work on Mars with, of course, upgrades. It would have to be upgraded with life support systems and radiation shielding. That roof could be modified for the shielding part without much change to the look but life support? Well by the time we’re on Mars (if ever) I’m sure the current tech will be up to the design mods. Just my opinion
