As a portuguese woman i really need to congratule you for this vídeo! It's the first time i watch your videos and couldn't feel more proud of my own country's food culture and thankful for this respectfull, joyfull and real presentation of yours!!! Thank you for sharing some of the best things this country has to offer. 😊✨
As a Portuguese I never realized how hard it would be to find Cozido à Portuguesa, being such a popular/traditional dish, but then I remembered 99.9% of times I ate it was at home. And the only time I ate it at a restaurant was in Açores because there's a popular spot where they cook it literally underground with volcanic heat. It's pretty much a homecooked meal for most nationals, I'd assume.
Great video. My wife and I have lived in Lisbon since Sept 2021, but I must admit that we have not been tempted to dive very deep into the Portuguese kitchen yet. Your video has definetly put an end to that cowardness and our journey into culinary Portugal starts today. Thanx for all the great food recomendations that made my mouth watering.
Next time you visit Sao Miguel, you have to try the cozido prepared in the geysers in Furnas. It’s slowly cooked 6-7 hours in the holes and then time to devour it. My cousin would always prepare a whole big pot every time I would visit. If you go, I’ll ask if he can prepare for you.
We've heard from many people that cozido apparently is a big thing at the Azores, so that will definitely be a priority when we go! And hopefully soon! We'll keep your cousin in mind!
You set the bar pretty high on your previous Lisbon food tours and you've raised the bar again with this tour. I know I'll watch this several times, just as I did before.
Thanks so much, Brian. Our previous Lisbon food tours are almost 2-3 years old, so we've had some time to improve and pack more information into a video like this. Glad, you like it!
You two are danes living the portuguese dream. I'd say you now behave, act and ARE full portuguese. Amazing how you not only adapted but took to be so much of what makes a portuguese a portuguese. Amazing!
Wow, that's quite the feat, given that Porto has such a rich gastronomic tradition, and, honestly, quite well known: The bifanas in Conga, the cachorrinhos in Gazela, the pork knee's sandwiches of Cardoso, the Francesinhas of Café Santiago (and several other great places in Porto as well), the tripes in Restaurante da Avó Maria, the seafood in Casa do Pescador and all those great seafood restaurants in Matosinhos. I mean, how could you spend 6 months in Porto and not find out about Portuguese food?
Lisbon gathers all diversity of Portuguese cuisine, but to be honest, in Porto and throughout the northern region, the low and medium tascas or restaurants serve customers with more detail and quality. You can try/eat delicious food from north to south, but in touristic places like Algarve or in the main streets of the big citys, you should run out from tourist driven restaurants and keep it simple, eating where Portuguese eat!
Man, this channel is the only one I look forward to. Good thing I didn't smoke weed, I would have two problems. The first as you would guess is serious munchies as the food looks so damn good, and the second, I would laugh even more at Joen and Amalie's antics.

Let me tell you that the way that you are eating sardines is the hardest because if you don't like spines you will get a lot doing like that. Very shortly what I do is to cut the head and from there try to split the meat from the central spine at the fish tail. If everything goes well, you will get like 2 parts but you will also need to removes spines and other stuff. Also it doesn't come perfectly everytime.
For some reason, I trust you guys more than other videos about Lisbon that I watched. Going there in less than a month definitely will follow your path.
Thank you so much for making this with real food in it. I'm so tired of people only review pastries and wine, like, I've got to eat real food too haha.
Pro tip for eating sardinhas: use your knife as support for your sardine, with the fish on the plate and gently smash the top (in this case the top would be the back of the sardinha) with your fork. The bones will separate from the meat and you just need to use your fork to take it out.
When I speak to people I describe Portuguese food as "honest". Really good ingredients, and no fuss. First time I had whole sea bass it came with cabbage and boiled potatoes, wonderful! Polvo alagreiro with punched potatoes, posta mirandesa with a salad, in the Tras is Montes, bachalau with anything, and once a memorable sardinha a grelado with a fantastic vinho verde in the Minho, ah yes the wines. Try the quiejos, especially the ones made with sheeps milk.
I'd say our food is a reflexion of our people - no fuss, no bullshit - but that wouldn't be exactly true. We have ancient traditional dishes that take days to prepare and our people is more nuanced than meets the eye. Cheers

Portugal was the first to start fishing the canadian rivers in Labrador region which is a portuguese name, just has portuguese ships went to fish cot in British or Norwegian coasts, portuguese used to fish atlantic salmon in Canadian rivers, so it has been part of the cozinha portuguesa since the XVI century even though it used to be salted on the wooden ships for preservation just like the vikings fish racks who often hold salted cot, so Danish and Portuguese have some stuff in common.

The Cozido à Portuguesa is a "survival" dish so we don't see it very often in restaurants. It was widely used to combat hunger in the past because it was easy and delicious. Today it is common for the family to get together and eat stew.

When a Lisbon food tour video starts out with "do not ask for paella please" you know it's a good one. That's something that bothers us portuguese and the spanish people. Imagine how a few spanish friends of mine reacted coming to lisbon and the first thing they see is tourists eating spanish food instead of portuguese food in the touristic center of lisbon, which feels like their culture is being stolen, or how portuguese people feel when we have such a complex cuisine and see that the first image people from outside our country have of our cuisine is a dish that isn't even ours, and that it evolved to a point that so many tourists demanded it that touristic portuguese food restaurants were forced to add it to their menus and is somehow one of their most sold items

Café São Bento is definitely our date night choice of restaurant. As a born and raised Lisbonite, I'm glad you're enjoying all the amazing food Portugal has to offer :)
The Cozido à Portuguesa is a "survival" dish so we don't see it very often in restaurants. It was widely used to combat hunger in the past because it was easy and delicious. Today it is common for the family to get together and eat stew.
Epic video!!
