Lisbon, Portugal has become a very popular city to visit and after my trip I understand why! It’s got such a rich and varied history, fresh high quality food and amazing traditions like the insanely fun Saint Anthony festival that was on when I went, I’ve never seen so many sardines being grilled in one night! Have you been to Lisbon? What are your thoughts? 🇵🇹🇵🇹
I loved the food, especially the grilled octopus which was surprisingly tender. Not chewy. Overall, I enjoyed Porto more than Lisbon as was my trip to Sintra! Lisbon finished #3 in Portugal and isn't a top 10 on my European city excursions. I live in the STL.
As a Norwegian, I can say with hand on heart, that so far as absolute beauty, incredible history & super rich cultural tapestries are concerned, combined with the most wonderful, warm & hospitable people, SW Europe is right up there. I really love Portugal & Lisbon, I love & appreciate the nature abound & I think it possesses a superb foodie scene. I really enjoy eating the "Pastéis de Bacalhau & Pastel de nata". So good & the coffee scene & taste is A1 too! I should also add, that I was amazed by the incredible beauty of the Azores. The nature is incredible really. Overall, I just love Southern & SW Europe. A very beautiful & sometimes "underrated" region. Thanks for creating & sharing this great content.
Thank you friend. A little secret between us... We admire a LOT Nordic people. You can imagine, your words means a lot to us. Nordic culture is AWESOME too! (can I include Swedes there too?? I don't even like Pastéis de Bacalhau or Pastéis de Nata. Anyways, thank you for your words and allllllllll the best to you friend 🙂
I'm a Portuguese who studied abroad with Norwegians (in the UK). That was 25 years ago. We became good friends and, for many years, we organized meetings between us in the UK or in the Netherlands. I presented them to our traditional cuisine and, specifically, to our codfish delicacies ('bacalhau'). At first, they seemed truly horrified (which was a bit puzzling, since a lot of our codfish comes from Norway). But then, slowly and then suddenly, they embraced Portuguese cuisine. One of them (named Tommas), always introduced me to other people by saying: "This is Filipe and he's a very good cook' - amusing, because I'm a healthcare professional, and my cooking is atrocious.

Yes, Lisbon is Europe's best city!!! I was wondering when you were going to release an episode on Lisbon, I was fortunate to go there 2 years ago for a documetary I made on the Afro-Portuguese community.

You have all his symbology(and they are the official symbols) spread all over Lisbon. The Caravelle with the 2 crows on each side of it. Most of the lamp posts have it on top and other places have it too. the legend says that Saint Vicent died in a Caravelle near Cabo de Sagres and two crows brought back the Caravelle with Saint Vicent back to Lisbon. You have the saint Vicente de fora Monastery in Lisbon.

Great video Malini! I was in Lisbon for the first time ever in August 2023. I loved it. My parents are from the Azores and settled in Canada. Infrequent family trips had us heading back to the Azores but never experiencing continental Portugal. After a long hiatus of over 30 years, I had the chance to reconnect with family and see the culture with fresh eyes as an adult. That developed a desire to learn a lot more about the culture of my parents and what also formed me in my formative years. When I stayed in the Alfama for the first time, Id leave my window open and I'd hear the fado music as I would fall asleep after an eventful day. It reminded me of Friday nights when parents finished a long week of work, and fado would play on the radio, to help them reminisce of what they left behind. I promised myself since that I would return to Portugal at least every two years to learn more about it first hand, explore more of the country, and do it slowly over time, and savour the time I have with the country. Back again in 2025. Tickets are already booked!

A small correction... The castle of S. Jorge was not built by the Moors, but by the Visigoths, a Germanic people. When the invasion of the peninsula took place, the Moors settled in the castle and increased it a little only that. Note: It is thought that the place where the castle is located was once a place occupied by the Celts, then the Romans built a fortress that later became a castle by the Visigoths.

Congratulations! Your desire to know the history, culture and language of the place is remarkable! Even if you are doing the most touristy spots, you give us a lively expression of being there. At the same time foreigner as almost an insider. This is a very good portrait of my city. Just one little correction: the fado singer sings: 'Alfama don't smell like Fado' and not 'sound like Fado'. 'Cheira' e não 'Soa'.
A small incuracy, Alfama don't survive to the earthquake, actually, Alfama was the neighbourhood of the nobles before the earthquake. And after the earthquake, almost everything was destroyd. The nobles moved to Ajuda/Belém and Alfama was rebuilded by the commom people

@Malini.Angelica if you’re ever coming down to Africa, please let me know. I don’t know of any festivals yet, people are too busy going on with their lives but Bourdain did it so we still have something to offer
Even when it's that crowded people never get aggressive during St. Anthony's festival. And when that happens it would be a very big exception, the crowd would never accept violence and they would intervene.

Thanks so much! Glad they brighten up your day 😊
Love love love lisboa!!!!
I just stumbled upon this video, and i must say that, apart from your STUNNING looks 😍, and (almost) perfect Portuguese, the references to places and historical facts, where on point 👌im on my way to check your other videos 👉👉
Thank you so much!!
The best European city, is where Malini makes entrance at the time
Eu adorei ela falando português ❤
You’re awesome and your videos are amazing.
Glad you like them!
Oh Wow 🤩
Nice vlog i like it so much 😊
Thank you so much 😊
Congratulations!
Thank you very much!
A small incuracy, Alfama don't survive to the earthquake, actually, Alfama was the neighbourhood of the nobles before the earthquake. And after the earthquake, almost everything was destroyd. The nobles moved to Ajuda/Belém and Alfama was rebuilded by the commom people
as always, an interesting video

Loved the video👏🏽
Thank you!!
Hii Malini
How are you..
Your videos are so informative .So many folks are travelling without any knowledge about the history & culture but you are diligent, caring & describing everything in a simple manner.
Appreciation to the Videographer too..
Keep doing ...waiting for the next episode.
Thank you so much 🙂
Another lovely video, I love the way you ended it with fado, I love fado, also gave me an idea of going to celebrate my patron saint’s ceremony in Lisbon
Btw Vasco da Gamma also conquered a lot of Africa and they also have monuments here in remembrance
@Malini.Angelica if you’re ever coming down to Africa, please let me know. I don’t know of any festivals yet, people are too busy going on with their lives but Bourdain did it so we still have something to offer
Nice! Great editing skills 👍
Enjoy! 😀
Thanks! 😁
Even when it's that crowded people never get aggressive during St. Anthony's festival. And when that happens it would be a very big exception, the crowd would never accept violence and they would intervene.
Yeah, an all round great atmosphere 🎉
Good 👍 morning 🎉Happy ⚖️ Sunday 😊
