  • The Ghost Stories of M. R. James
    Episode 1: The Ash-tree
The tale documents the tale of Sir Richard Fell, who has just inherited Castringham, a country seat with an unfortunate history. The house has been cursed since the day his ancestor, Sir Matthew Fell, condemned a woman to death for witchcraft. It is soon discovered that the ancient ash tree outside his bedroom window is the root of the problem.

Almost every M. R. James story has a line to the effect of "I'm not going to bore you (the reader) by further describing this" and it never fails to crack me up. Great reading, Ian.

Can’t go wrong with M. R. James :) His stories are as vivid as though he had seen what he describes.

I love the intonation when you read "he had become infected with the Italian taste." A centuries-long tradition of English disdain for Italian ways is behind that priceless tone -- and some feared infections were not merely ones of architectural taste, of course!

This is a brilliant M. R. James story. It’s also the story that kept me awake for days on end for fear those horrific things would appear at my sill, or under the bed. A wonderful narration as always !

A definite classic. Many thanks for this reading. As an aside, would you consider reading "The Horror from the Hills" by Frank Belknap Long?

Decent reading. Nothing beats the sinister (and unfortunately abridged) Christopher Lee reading.

Are you refering to the BBC 4 episode TV series which C. Lee narrates M. R. James stories. That one is really awesome.

Plural for the word "hearsay" is "hearsay", not "evidence". You can't just hang a person because multiple people thought they saw something :(
No, not even if they were an actual witch.

Old comment lol, but testifying as to things you saw/experienced is not hearsay. Hearsay is when you describe what someone else told you.
If a bunch of people say, "I saw this woman doing witch stuff," then that's not hearsay, those are eyewitness accounts. Direct testimony from witnesses is still considered highly valuable evidence in modern courts.
