    I love watching you talk about plants that I own especially the jade plant as it is one of my favourite plants I really liked the points you made about new growth growing slower from a pruned woody stem, I did not know that pruned woody stems, make the new growth that comes from it grow slower , but I did know that you could prune woody stems to get new growth, you learn something new everyday. Love your videos they are the best on UA-cam in my opinion, I may watch the occasional other plant video on UA-cam but your the only plant UA-cam channel that I watch every single video you make, I really enjoy your videos and the hard work you do.

    Excellent thank you! Perfect timing 👍I’m going to prune a small jade that is about 8” long with just the one straight stem. On the last plant… could you have bottom watered instead? If so would you just have waited for the weight of the pot to change? I was surprised the soil appeared so dry after the soaking you gave it, but I’m sure that happens more than we think. My plants don’t ever pop out of the container like that so I never know what the soil looks like.

      Myself I wouldn't butt water jade/succulents.(Root system)

    • @EverythingPlants
      @EverythingPlants  2 роки тому

      I don't usually bottom water succulents because most of them have fine shallower roots compared to most other plants. Now with that said, anything is possible and I'm sure there are people that bottom water succulents.

    Question: I don't have time to read and see if this was answered already so please forgive me if it has. For thin growth lower down, I've heard you should pinch small growth at the top of the plant to cause it to sprout leaves lower down. Is there any truth to this? Do you ever pinch top growth?

    • @EverythingPlants
      @EverythingPlants  2 роки тому

      Hello! Pinching and pruning essentially do the same thing....stop vertical growth and activate nodes lower in the plant to promote branching. So to answer your question....technically yes. I do have one video ( I honestly can't remember which one) that showed some small leaves popping out from lower in the stem. I have had so many jades and prune them all the time that I can't remember if I left them alone, removed them or fell off hahaha. Usually when your prune or pinch you will get branching from that closest node and not necessarily growth from all over the plant. If you did a prune from every branch and a fairly heavy prune overall, then I can see the plant pushing out growth from all over, but simply pinching one branch I can't see there being a huge response from the plant. Kind of confusing, but I hope this helps

    • @Aar0nDown

      I know how to answer this question so let me just jump in and answer it: It’s hard to say 100% how long it could take a jade to get a woody stem maybe a few years others could take a year, there’s a lot of factors that go into the woody stem appearing for example: was it a cutting from a older jade plant, if so it may not take long for the woody stem to appear but new growth that is currently being pushed out will still be green for a long time, if the plant is a leaf propagation or a young plant from The nursery it could take years before the woody stem appears because the plant still needs to mature. The main thing to remember is all new growth starts out green and then turns woody so don’t expect the whole plant to one day suddenly turn woody all at once, The whole plant will turn woody at different rates based on maturity, but eventually the hole plant will be woody except for the new growth that it will be always putting out over time , it’s a repeating cycle, but once a stem is woody it can’t be undone, why even want no woody stem it’s only natural. The only way to see green growth is new growth or to have a young plant, but eventually all parts of the plant will turn woody . I recommend you love your jade plant for how it is currently, treat it well , keep it growing healthy and your woody stem will come with time.

    After you propagate a stem cutting how long do you let it grow before you start pruning it into a shape?

    • @EverythingPlants
      @EverythingPlants  2 роки тому

      Depends on the type of care but I'd say at least a year or two

    Did you propagate the woody stem ? And if so how did you do it. Thanks great video

    • @EverythingPlants
      @EverythingPlants  2 роки тому

      If I remember correctly, I gave all these stems away on a plant group page. It is not different then propagating a non woody stem. Let the end callous over for a couple days and literally stick it back I to soil. Water lightly near the stem, but don't soak all the soil because there is no roots to consume the water....which can quickly lead to rot. Good luck and if you haven't seen already, I have many more jade videos on my channel (under succulent Playlist)

      @@EverythingPlants I do have. One is about 10 years old and its on the bushier side but I will trim it a bit around the edges since some branches are getting quite long and heavy. Although its far from being as big as yours are. And also I took 3 branches before hand and now they are growing nicely in a seperate pot. They will be more like a tree and not a bush and I will be following your how to videos to make them like that.

    Is it too late in the season to prune or can you do it anytime of year?
    I was given a very big, beautiful jade plant but it’s not very full on the top.
    I took out all the new growth and small woody stems from around the base to show off the tree like shape of it. Currently propagating 42 baby stems from it!

    • @EverythingPlants
      @EverythingPlants  2 роки тому

      42 baby stems?!?! Holy crap you got a nice prop of jades going! I live in Canada and right now my jades aren't doing much. Personally I would wait until the plant actively starts growing again...right now it probably doesn't have the energy it needs for a hard prune. You can always try one small area and see how it does. Hope this helps....keep me posted.

    Is there a way to prevent regrowth from the woody portion of the stem that we cut off? My jade plant has 2 woody stems that grows downwards and I've been wanting to trim them off but have been afraid to. Thank you so much for this information!

    • @EverythingPlants
      @EverythingPlants  2 роки тому +2

      I think the only thing I do is if new growth sprouts, then just snap it off. Otherwise, you'd have to dig up the soil and cut them out.

    Can you do a stem cutting propagation if it's a woody stem? Or does it have to be the newer green stem?
