My Golum Jade is chugging along, but doesn’t seem to grow “fast”… are you familiar with the different types of Jade? Curious if their speed of growth is different. Stay warm!
The Gollum and regular Jade have similar growth rates I find, but they seem to grow 'slow' in the first couple years. After establishing a strong root system and annual pruning, the plant grows nicely and the trunk thickens. I did have a variegated one for a year, I think, and that one requires a ton of light. I didn't have that one long enough to know whether or not it has the same growth rate.

Thank you! I've wanted a tricolor jade for a long time and just ordered mine today! It should be here in 7 days and I'm really excited. I'm learning all I can BUT I'm not finding much about pruning from beginning to a large plant. I understand my jade needs to establish itself and find its own branching BUT when should I start pruning? Obviously that's a ways off for me, I'm only getting a 4 inch rooted plant but I'd love some "start to "finish" info. Also, what do you know about the different care for regular jade as apposed to verigated? I'd imagine it would need more sun without getting too much direct hot sun? I live in Texas so there is a BIG difference between direct sun and DIRECT sun. Lol. I don't know, but any info would be appreciated.
I would definitely let it grow for a couple seasons before you start thinking about pruning. Sometimes they will branch out in a beautiful structure naturally. I had a variegated jade a number of years ago but due to the amount of Jade's that I owned I had to get rid of a few. The variegated jade needs more light than your regular green variety because it has less chlorophyll ( green on the leaves) to photosynthesize. Now I can't speak for Texas sunlight... But if you're keeping it outside, definitely put it in full shade and slowly transition it to higher light. Same thing can be done for indoors but not necessarily needing full shade at the start. Give it a bright spot and slowly move it to direct sunlight
Hi Jeff, I hope you can help. Our 20 year old jade plant has been doing well and we kept it outside for the summer, didn’t get it in fast enough and it started to look like it was dying. Leaves and branches started to brown and wilt. My partner went crazy with the pruning cutting everything off. It has no leaves at all now. Will more leaves grow from where it has been cut? Is there anything I can do to the soil to help it? Thanks Jack
@@SmakerJAK make sure it gets good light while indoors. I always say your brightest window is the best spot. If it's not getting enough then give it a grow light!
Hi Jeff, I had contacted you about 1 of my 2 larger jades, this is about the other one. It's about 17 years old and got really leggy and actually lost a LOT of leaves due to some root rot. When I got my plants back after my move, I wound up cutting some larger stems coming off the main trunk. I am (and the nursery person I showed pics to) think I caught it in time and the plant will be okay, time will tell. Anyhow, due to the overwatering the jade is tall and very leggy. Wish I would have waited a day as I pruned it back yesterday. I pruned back a lot of new growth, as you said the softer portions as well as some that were turning woody. I am hoping I will get leaf growth towards the center of the plant or that the stems will fill out more like it was prior to the overwatering issues. Should the plant start putting leaves out on the leggy portions of the stems or will the growth just be on the ends? I do have a lot of new growth started on some of leggy branches but still has a lot of bareness I recently added plant lights. I will be repotting with new soil back into the same pot in the spring as it's been probably 3-5 years since it's been done. Thanks.
Pruning does nothing for root rot. It's the infected roots, stems and soil that needs to go. Propagate your cuttings and start fresh, be sure to thoroughly clean the pot.
@@montanaholley4776 I should have said that I believe I caught in time. The stems that were bad were cut off at the main trunk. There was minimal spotting in the wound track of the main trunk. Clean wound sites with hydrogen peroxide. The upper cut stems showed no discoloration in the wound track. Showed a pic to local nursery personnel and she believes I may have caught in time. Plant is thriving with the grow light and has sporadic new growth however still bare towards the center of the whole plant. Best way to describe is a tree leafing out in spring after a few weeks. Wasn't sure if pruning would promote new growth along the stems closer to the trunk or if I would have to do more of a drastic pruning. Repotting will be in spring and I plan on putting back same pot, once thoroughly cleaned out and new soil. I let plant thoroughly dry out and have only watered 2x since late September. Plant is responding. Thx
Hello. You can send me a picture of the plant if you like. Typically if you prune, it will not push out new leaves or branches lower on the stem....generally just at the site or node where you made the prune. Now a time or two for me it has done this, but it is rare.
It kind of tough to explain but if you have a set of leaves and you cut just above those leaves the new branches will form on the same side as those leaves
I've got two jade plants. One is still in it's plastic pot and it dries out very quickly. I need to plant it in another pot. I have many Terra pots. I've heard that it's best to report in the spring, but I've got to water it from the bottom because the water just flows through. Should I repot now or wait until spring? My other jade plant is potted in a Tera cota pot. I don't water them until the soil is completely dry. I've had it for several years and it still doesn't have any brown stems. It dropped leaves and they have started to propagate. Does pruning help the jade plant to develop brown stems?
Here is a video on when to water your jades if you haven't seen it yet. ua-cam.com/video/SWQxbHEtqdE/v-deo.html Generally repotting should be done when the plant is growing, typically spring and summer, but I do repotting year round. If you can move the plant to brighter light in the winter or even add a grow light and will definitely help. The brown or woody stems come with age. Obviously brighter light will help the plant grow faster over time. Pruning doesn't help with woody stems specifically, but pruning does help with branching and trunk/stem thickness
Why do you think your leaf pairs grow so close together? It looks very healthy, but most Jade Plants I have seen, seem to have a gap of an inch or more between leaf pairs.
I just made a video on this today with my Gollum Jade. As long as it's getting the requirements it needs then you can prune and propagate anytime of the year
Not sure this comment will be seen, but I’m dying to know! Since you just pruned yesterday, I’m hoping the answer is-it’s ok to prune a little more today?
@@LoyaltyLoveRespect you definitely don't need to prune a jade. I always suggest that if you do want to prune, try a small area from one branch and see how it responds. Give it bright light and let the plant do the work. This will give you confidence to prune more down the road if needed

@@EverythingPlants Hi, I can send pics. Will need your email. Thx.

How do you know which direction branches will grow in.. from which angles to cut?

Generally repotting should be done when the plant is growing, typically spring and summer, but I do repotting year round.
We need to kick it and trim our jades.
Why do you think your leaf pairs grow so close together? It looks very healthy, but most Jade Plants I have seen, seem to have a gap of an inch or more between leaf pairs.
The internodes.....gap between nodes is closer together in higher light and further apart in lower light
Do you have a minimum #of leaves you leave on? I just planted 3 trunks with no leaves because it I was a bad plant mom, and grew super weird.
Great video
Thanks so much Catherine
why are the leaves droopy?
When should you prune and propagate? Spring, summer or autumn?
I just made a video on this today with my Gollum Jade. As long as it's getting the requirements it needs then you can prune and propagate anytime of the year
My jade plant has tiny white spots on the tops of leaves. I’ve washed it off and it comes back. Any ideas?
Totally normal. It's just mineral buildup, I believe

Thank you 😊
Not sure this comment will be seen, but I’m dying to know! Since you just pruned yesterday, I’m hoping the answer is-it’s ok to prune a little more today?
Prune a little bit more on my plant or yours?
The leaves of mine fall easily if you touch them
I’m scared to cut lol
@@LoyaltyLoveRespect you definitely don't need to prune a jade. I always suggest that if you do want to prune, try a small area from one branch and see how it responds. Give it bright light and let the plant do the work. This will give you confidence to prune more down the road if needed
Very informative but a little too slow and long for my short attention span. Can you show and explain the steamers?
Your leaves "you calling me fat?"
You "just thick"
😂
The reason they droop is overwatering , root rot.
Yes, but I'm simply talking about a healthy plant that has too much weight on the leaves. Thanks for watching Robert
